First Day AU

Summary:

Luz wants to learn magic from the untrusting and nefarious Owl Lady, but her first epic quest is really just a ploy to get Luz off her back and do her chores for her.
My continuation of the original pilot storyboards of The Owl House. This is pretty much Luz’s first full day on the isles, but changed to match the personalities and events of the characters and the show in the original pilot storyboards.

Notes:

After defeating Lilith and saving Hexside, Luz wants to learn magic from the untrusting and nefarious Owl Lady, but her first epic quest is really just a ploy to get Luz off her back and do her chores for her. (This is my first work, so forgive any mistakes or errors in this chapter, and I’m not sure if I’m going to continue this series so read at your own risk:) )

Work Text:

“Oh come on” Luz groaned in annoyance after another failed attempt at making a spell circle. She looked down at her phone to look at the picture she took of Eda using a spell circle.

“How is she doing it? I’m doing the exact same thing!” At this point her rambling alerted Eda and woke King from his afternoon nap. “Just give up already.” “No way” Luz retorted “I’m getting closer I know it.”

Eda walked into the living room to see Luz concentrating on her phone and King staring at her from the couch. “Uhh what’s goin’ on” Eda asked, genuinely confused.

“I’m trying to learn magic” Luz said, slightly embarrassed. Eda only snorted after hearing this. “Well better quit while you’re ahead kid, not like humans can do magic.” “Oh yeah? Well watch this!” Luz said before putting her arm out in the air and drawing a spell circle in the air, ending up with the same result as the last 100 times she had tried.

“Dang it! I thought believing in myself would help!” Luz sighed and sat down even more embarrassed knowing she probably just made an even bigger fool of herself in front of her new mentor. This was the type of behavior she was trying to get rid of, and here she was, continuing making herself look stupid.

“Yeah I really don’t think you can teach yourself magic just by looking at me do it on your glowy soul box.” Eda said, clearing the atmosphere. “You’re right! You could teach me yourself!” Luz shouted excitedly.

“Kid I already told you, humans can’t do magic.” “Well maybe because they haven’t tried! I’m tough, formidable, smart, brave,-“ “Your shoe’s untied” Eda said, cutting her off. Luz looked at her shoes to realize that not only did she not have shoelaces, but she just made yet another fool out of herself.

“Pffffffttt! How do expect to learn magic if you’re that gullible?” King said in between a laugh. “Whatever, just-“ Luz looked at Eda not breaking eye contact “Trust me I can handle it.”

“Hmm, how bout this” Eda started “Prove to me that you can handle it.” “Okay! How?” Luz asked, before Eda made a spell circle, conjuring a large sack full of bottles and potions.

“Go out and sell these around town, there’s some real tough stuff out there, for now you’ve been sheltered from most of it.”

“MOST?” Luz said, cutting her off. “Yesterday was crazy intense, and I didn’t even see most of it?” “Yup” said Eda simply. “If you can handle being out there, and selling these around town, maybe I’ll consider teaching you.” Eda retorted with a smirk. Luz realized the opportunity in front of her in didn’t want to waste it, so she immediately responded with, “Yes! of course! I’ll sell them all, earning the respect of everyone on the isles, and making you proud!” Luz said excitedly. “I wont let you down!”

Luz then went to grab the sack full of potions before realizing they’re way too heavy, causing Eda to draw a spell circle, doing something to make the bag substantially lighter. Still heavy, but carryable. Besides, it’s not like it would be that heavy for long. At least that what Luz thought.

“Well, see you guys soon!” Luz said before closing the door behind her. “Did you seriously just get her to do your chores for you?” King asked, knowing what the answer was. “Well, I mean yeah I guess” said Eda guiltily. “But I wasn’t lying, you need to be tough to handle the isles, and you need to know where you’re going.”

“Uh huh, you do realize you just sent her, someone who has barely explored any of the isles, out by herself, with her objective being to go to the town she doesn’t know the location of to sell potions?” “Yup. Which is why-“ Eda lifts king up off the couch and dumps him onto the floor “You’re going with her.”

“What!” “You said it yourself King, she doesn’t know where she’s going. You need to go with her, and don’t forget, I could start charging rent.”

“Uhhh! Fine!” King shouted as he made his way to the door, opening it and then abruptly turning around and stating “But don’t expect me to keep this up! I may be small but you don’t know who you’re reckoning with! I am the King of Demons!”

He then slammed the door behind him, causing Hooty to grunt in pain. “And yet you still got stuck in a sweater arm”
