Overanalyzing Nigar and Ibrahim

Summary:

A detailed commentary on the characters of Nigar Kalfa and Ibrahim Pasha that I make as I rewatch the show episode by episode: The parallels they share with each other and the other characters, their dynamics with each other and the other characters, the nuances of their dialogue in Turkish, their relationship to the historical context, their character trajectories, are all commented on.

Think of this as an attempt at “annotating” the show Magnificent Century with a focus on these two characters.

Notes:

I love Nigar Kalfa and Ibrahim Pasha as individual characters. I also love their relationship with each other and think that it is far more interesting, intricately-written and meaningful than most viewers of the show give it credit for being. In this work I will analyze them both as individual characters and in relation to each other by going over every interesting scene each of them has throughout the show.

There will be more of a focus on Nigar than on Ibrahim in this work since she is my real favorite character in this show (though Ibrahim is a close second). Ibrahim is a main character who is based on a real-life historical politician, and as such he has many scenes that both won't contribute to the broader points I will try to make in this work and which I don't feel myself equipped to analyze. His personal relationships with characters like Süleyman, Hürrem and Hatice will be examined, but not every scene of him doing politics, going to bazaars or paling around with Matrakçı will be included in this work.

These will be a mix of what I find to be substantial analyses with evidence to back them up and speculations that are mostly in the headcanon territory. I am not saying that you have to agree with me on any of these, nor am I saying that all of these were intended by the creators. (Though I might very occasionally use quotes from the creators to back my analyses up).

The chapters that examine scenes about Nigar and Ibrahim’s relationship to each other will have a little “*” in their titles.

This work will only examine their scenes in the first 56 episodes. The remainder of the show will mostly be included while comparing and contrasting the scenes.

Chapter 1: Episode 1 - Why do Nigar and Ibrahim help Hürrem in the first episode?

Chapter Text

Both Nigar and Ibrahim help Hürrem in Episode 1 after learning that their pasts share a commonality with hers.

Nigar sees Hürrem in the bath and asks about her. When she learns that she is from Ruthenia her eyes sparkle. We later learn that Nigar’s grandmother was Ruthenian.

This is paralleled by Ibrahim’s similar excited reaction later in the episode to learning that Hürrem was the daughter of an Orthodox priest. Ibrahim, having a Greek father, was presumably raised Orthodox.

Them both helping Hürrem because of their common roots is I think significant.

After these scenes both Nigar and Ibrahim help Hürrem (Nigar by delivering her famous speech "You rule the world!" and Ibrahim by choosing her for the dance). They are the architects of Hürrem's success in Episode 1. The show acknowledges Ibrahim's role when Hürrem thanks him at his grave, by that time Nigar is long-forgotten by the show.
