Pure Vanilla Cookie could only mourn alone. It seemed to him that no other cookie could truly make him whole like his beautiful Moonflower Queen, who passed away in a delicate sacrifice. The faeries knew his grieving shouldn't be interfered, yet many were still worried about what may come after the times of solemnity.
The skies were illuminated with the pale glow of the moon, making Pure Vanilla reminisce on the times he and White Lily would dance under the dark skies. Just him and her. They were truly enveloped in each other's magnificence. He could picture her silky white hair flowing through the gentle wind as she sat on the long grass, capturing her true beauty likewise of an artist's muse.
His tears slowly streamed down his face, had he not wiped them since he strayed away from the other faeries that were pestering him about his Queen’s death. He grazed a thumb across his cheek, wiping the warm tears off of his face. Nothing felt real to Pure Vanilla at this moment. The fish swimming in the river below only reminded him of the shooting stars he and Lily used to wish on. He sniffled and hugged his knees closer to his chest, lowering his head to sulk silently.
The faint sound of footsteps on the grassy terrain caught Pure Vanilla’s attention, making him flinch and check behind him to see who was there. A tall, broad cookie was approaching him, and while he couldn't see well in the darkness of the night, but he had a feeling he knew who it was.
“Pure Vanilla.. is anything troubling you?” They said, with a recognizable deep voice. It was Dark Cacao Cookie, a friend of Pure Vanilla that had been with him through every struggle he could think of. While he was bitter and stern on the outside, Pure Vanilla knew he was a caring cookie with an undying loyalty to the ones he loved.
“Cacao..” Pure Vanilla softly spoke. “Come closer, my friend.”
Dark Cacao did what he was suggested, and walked up to the gentle Faerie King, sitting down next to him. His feet dangled off the edge of the cliff overhead a river, while Vanilla's were crossed. He rested his head on his fist, gazing downwards with a somber expression. Cacao placed a hand on Vanilla’s stray one, grazing his thumb across the back of his hand. The Viridescent Faerie shifted his gaze to the cookie beside him, showing him an expression that made his heart ache. Nothing but raw emotions were displayed.
“I've heard White Lily passed away.. I should have left you to grieve alone, but I can't imagine how hard it is to get through something like this when you don't have anyone else.” Dark Cacao spoke, breaking the silence between them.
Pure Vanilla sniffled and leaned into Dark Cacao’s shoulder. He wrapped his arm around the stronger man’s forearm, closing his eyes and listening to the ambience of the river flowing beneath him.
“I miss her a lot.” He murmured. “I feel an emptiness in my heart, yet.. I feel like it's not her who's missing.”
“Why do you say that?”
The Faerie sighed. “While I loved her dearly, I feel that everything about us was orchestrated.. scripted.. We couldn't have a moment to ourselves without the underlying feeling of disappointing the Faerie Kingdom. We could only be together because we were.. supposed to.”
Tears started to form in the corners of his eyes. He scrunched his eyes closed and wiped them off of his face with his shaking hands.
“Every moment with her felt magical, but I knew that I didn't want to love someone like this. I wanted to be free. of.. just.. all of this burden. This burden of having no choice at all. I feel like.. I..I feel like I never truly loved her.” He choked out, now starting to sob and let out his buried emotions.
Dark Cacao lifted his hand from under the other’s and ran it through his soft, light blonde hair. The silence in the air felt thicker than ever, as if one of them just wanted to say something, yet it couldn't come out, no matter how hard they tried.
“If you feel like she wasn't your true soulmate, who do you think is? Or are you unsure?” He asked, feeling like it was slowly getting harder and harder to breathe.
“Cacao.. I…” Pure Vanilla stuttered.
“I think I may have fallen for you. I find it hard not to be entranced by your grace.. your strength, your determination.. everything about you.”
Dark Cacao felt like the world stopped turning. He wanted to kiss Pure Vanilla’s soft lips so bad this very second, but he knew it was wrong. Everything felt wrong. He couldn't confess to someone who just lost a loved one this very day.
His lips parted a few times as he tried searching for something to say, but soon after, his were pressed against Pure Vanilla’s.
The moment felt like it could last forever. He put his arm around the Viridescent Faerie's waist and cupped his cheek with the other. As much as he wanted to hold back, he was enveloped in this mere moment. He didn't care about anything else, the other faeries, the people looking for him, not a bit.
He wished to preserve this moment like a museum artifact.
When the two pulled away to take a breath, Dark Cacao caught a glimpse of the other cookie's eyes, shimmering in the moonlight. He couldn't help but gaze endlessly into them, entranced by the Faerie's beauty. Was this truly the cookie he was blessed enough to love?
“I.. I'm sorry if you didn't want to kiss me.. I just..”
Pure Vanilla was cut off by Dark Cacao tilting his head upwards and kissing him again. He wrapped his arms around the other cookie's neck, pulling him closer. The two broke the kiss, but rested their foreheads against the other's.
“Do not worry, my love. Even if this could be the last time I ever see you, I'm still just as grateful for this small moment.” The stern cookie spoke.
The Faerie smiled, opening his eyes once more.
“I'm glad I was able to be close to you, even for a mere fleeting moment. It's truly wonderful to love someone freely.”
