As Smart Beavis and Butthead tread through the forest for what seemed like forever they finally stopped to rest for a bit. They sat on an old log by the ledge of a small cliff, peering out into the horizon.
They looked down a bit and saw their city, the flashy lights catching their eyes the most. But something more caught their eye, the sunset setting onto their city. A beautiful blue clashing with a light yellow.
“I forgot how beautiful the sunsets are… Living in the big city and all…” Smart Beavis spoke up.
“Indeed, you almost forget they’re here. A hidden treasure almost.” Smart Butthead replied.
Smart Beavis smiled softly, “A treasure to be shared with.” He said, looking back at his lover.
Smart Butthead smiled, he looked at his partner, taking his hand. He rubbed Smart Beavis’ hand softly, humming.
It was silent as Smart Beavis heard the sound of a familiar song that his lover was humming. “What song is that?” Smart Beavis asked.
“Hmm… That one earth song we heard when we were observing our counterparts.” He replied.
Smart Beavis smiled widely, “The one they said sucked?” He said.
Smart Butthead stopped for a second, trying hard not to smile more. “Indeed, the one they said sucked.”
They both locked eyes with each other, the world itself melted away from them. Just two souls in the entire universe, forever one. The only two that the world cared about. The two gazed into one another’s eyes until Smart Beavis gasped suddenly. He leaned over and picked up something, showing it to Smart Butthead instantly.
He examined it for a brief moment, “Oh. It’s a salamander.” Smart Butthead said.
“Lizard.” Smart Beavis replied quickly.
Smart Butthead looked away, “Right…”
Smart Beavis smiled warmly, “It’s okay. People get it wrong all the time, but it’s a simple one to fix.” He said.
“Lead the way.” Smart Butthead said.
Smart Beavis brought the lizard closer to his partner. He pointed at the back of it, “You see, lizards have this arrow kind of pattern, it can vary which way the pattern goes. See how it’s going in different directions?” He looked up at Smart Butthead, seeing him listen intensely. “While with salamanders, they have more of a dot pattern around their body.” He said.
He patted the lizard gently, “Hm… I believe I get it now. Aren’t salamanders amphibians as well?” Smart Butthead asked.
Smart Beavis thought for a second, “Yes, they are. They follow that type of species, which people also confuse that for. But you got that right on the first try.” He said, smiling.
Smart Butthead smiled back at him, watching as Smart Beavis set the lizard back down onto the ground, the lizard crawling away quickly. When he looked back up at his partner he kissed him suddenly. Smart Beavis jumped a bit, pulling away when doing so.
“Sorry. Was that too much? Ugh! I should’ve waited!” Smart Butthead said, he got up from the log.
“No, hey- hey! It’s fine!” Smart Beavis said, he got up to calm down his lover. He rubbed his back gently, guiding him back onto the log. “It’s fine, we’re still new to this.” He said.
Smart Butthead nodded, his face blushing a light blue from embarrassment. He took a deep breath before looking back into the horizon, the sky a cotten candy color now. The two sat there in silence for what seemed like entirety until Smart Beavis spoke up.
“Hey… Uhm- I have something to show you… It’s a little ways from here.” He said.
Smart Butthead looked up at his lover, he nodded in agreement. Smart Beavis helped him up and they began walking down a hill. They walked through a pathway that seemed like it was built in recently, then they tread through a steep slope. The rest of the walk was easy until they came across a large tree in the way. Smart Beavis jumped up onto it and reached his hand out for his lover to grab. Smart Butthead grabbed his lover’s hand, he got boosted up onto the tree, they both jumped down and continued walking.
“No mean to be unpatient, but are we almost there?” Smart Butthead asked.
Smart Beavis looked ahead, he tried to see through the trees. “Uhm… Yes, I believe so.” He answered.
Smart Butthead nodded, they walk some more until they reach a big building. Smart Beavis smiled, he took his lover’s hand and dragged him toward it.
“What is this place?” Smart Butthead asked, looking around the whole building.
“You’ll see…” Smart Beavis answered.
Smart Beavis took his lover around the side of the building. Walking around until he saw a door, he opened it, waiting for Smart Butthead to go through first. When he did, he quickly went in and closed the door. The place was dark, so Smart Beavis pulled out a flashlight. He turned it on, only for the light to be dim, he shook it until the light was bright.
He looked around until he saw a certain door, he whistled to Smart Butthead to come to him. They walked down a long hallway until they reached a doorway. Smart Beavis smiled as he turned to his lover, he grabbed his hand.
“Close your eyes.” Smart Beavis said, waiting for him to do so.
Smart Butthead smiled, closing his eyes. Smart Beavis walked them into the room, “Wait here and hold this.” He said, placing the flashlight into his partner’s hand.
Smart Beavis reached into his robe pocket and pulled out a large light. He twisted the knob and the light shined brightly all around the room, hurting his eyes. Smart Beavis set the light in the center of the room, once he did that he walked back toward his lover.
“Okay, I’m going to lead you into the center of the room.” Smart Beavis said, waiting for his lover’s permission before doing so.
“Alright. Lead the way, my love.” Smart Butthead replied, smiling warmly.
Smart Beavis grabbed Smart Butthead’s free hand and walked him over to the center of the room. He angled him so that he could see everything. Smart Beavis turned to the light and turned the knob for the light to be brighter.
“Okay… That will do. You can open your eyes.” He said.
Smart Butthead opened his eyes, he gasped, looking around the whole room. He walked around, taking everything in. “Wow… You reall found all of this for me?” He asked.
“Yeah… I found it a week ago.” Smart Beavis replied.
“How’d you know I like sharks?” He asked, looking at a statue of one.
“Uhm… You mentioned it a few times when we where watching that one Television show.” Smart Beavis said.
Smart Butthead walked around, observing each statue of different sharks until he reached a full body skeleton of one. His lover walked up behind him.
“Do you know which type that is? I wasn’t too sure if it was a kind of one that’s from our universe, since the supreme leaders like to breed animals with strange genetic mutations and such.” Smart Beavis asked.
Smart Butthead looked at the skeleton from a different angle. “Well, it definitely isn’t one from our universe, the teeth look normal than the ones that we know of.” He replied.
Smart Beavis wasn’t too sure either, so he went with the only shark breed he knows, “A megalodon?”
Smart Butthead would’ve laughed so hard if he could. So he just smiled, while looking at his lover. “No… That… Those are extinct… And we were smart enough to not bring those back.” He said.
Smart Beavis blushed a bit from embarrassment, he could tell that he was super wrong about his answer. “Yes, indeed… Uh- Continue with your observation.”
He did as he was told and Smart Butthead continued. “Hmm… Could be a sand tiger. A normal great white would be way too simple for such a aquarium.”
Smart Beavis nodded, he didn’t understand what his lover was talking about, but he felt bad about it. Smart Butthead bothered to learn a little bit about his interests while he himself didn’t learn anything.
“Smart Beavis?” His lover spoke up, turning to him.
“Oh- Sorry, lost in my thoughts. That’s all.” He replied.
“Hm, what was it about?” Smart Butthead asked.
He took a moment to reply, “Nothing. It was something insignificant.” Smart Beavis answered.
“Nothings insignificant when it’s about you, my love.” Smart Butthead said, he took his hands into his lovers.
Smart Beavis blushed slightly, “Is that so? Well… I appreciate that. But really, it was something insignificant.” He said.
Smart Butthead shrugged, “Alright then.” He walked around some more, he realized that the sound of carpet turned into glass, looking down he saw a little aquarium. He tapped on the glass with his foot, making sure it was secure, once he knew it was he bend down to the floor, looking if any fish were still alive. “Hey Smart Beavis. Do you know when this place got shut down?” He asked
Smart Beavis looked up from the floor, turning to Smart Butthead. “Hm… No, I don’t. I’ve only discovered it a couple of days ago… Based on the amount of plants growing, I’d say… a century or more.” He answered.
Smart Butthead was amazed, in his thousands of years living, he’d never realized this was here this whole time. No. There’s a distant memory, a memory that he chose to forget.
It was a late spring, the temperature was raising and the leaves started to grow back. Structures were being built, buildings only for the high class. The government was still corrupt, only a few people knew the truth. But besides that, Smart Butthead was going somewhere new. He always liked exploring new things. His mother was taking him to an aquarium, but Smart Butthead only wanted to see one thing. Sharks.
He doesn’t remember the ride there, but he will never forget the visit. He walked around each exhibit with his hand in his mother’s, until they reached the shark exhibit. He wondered off, seeing each and every shark that was in each tank, he knew everyone. When he entered the gift shop he saw the one thing he wanted in the whole shop, a shark stuffed animal. He ran over excitedly, picking it up, mesmerized. He turned to his mother only for her not to be there, he looked around, nothing.
Smart Butthead started to panic, he walked around through the whole aquarium, calling for her. A few hours later he’s at the police station, waiting for potentially nothing to show up. Another hour, nothing. Smart Butthead ended up calling the other person he knew. He met with Smart Beavis a few minutes later, he went home with him and his mother. He never knew where she went, but when Smart Beavis’ mother would be on the phone, she was screaming. It scared the both of them a lot. After some time Smart Beavis’ mom left as well and the smarts were together ever since.
“Smart Butthead?! Hey!” Smart Beavis called out, shaking his lover.
Smart Butthead felt a chill throughout his whole body, he blinked a few times before reaching out for his lover, hugging him tightly.
“Are you okay? What’s wrong?” Smart Beavis asked, looking up to his lover’s eyes.
Smart Butthead looked deeply into his eyes, seeing how worried he was, “A bad memory… About this place.” He said.
Smart Beavis became even worried, “What… Oh… I didn’t know this was… I apologize… I shouldn’t have brought you here, come on let’s go.” He said, getting out of his lover’s grasp and taking his hand, only for Smart Butthead not to move.
“No… It’s fine. Actually… I want to go to a certain place.” Smart Butthead said, he pulled his partner around to a door. He pushed the door, only to be blocked on the other side. He looked at Smart Beavis, “Help me push this door.” He asked.
Smart Beavis agreed and they both pushed the door with their full body weight. The door slid open slowly as they pushed, they stopped when there was room for them to go through. Smart Beavis stopped quickly ran toward his flashlight and picked it up, he placed it in his robe pocket then slid through the crack of the door. They walked hand in hand as Smart Butthead looked for a specific place, he stopped walking when they approached the one thing he was looking for. Smart Butthead led the both of them inside the gift shop, he looked around until he saw it. He walked toward it and picked up the same shark stuffed animal that he had to leave behind all those years ago.
Smart Butthead smiled as he examined it. “Okay, we can go now… Smart Beavis?” He looked over and saw his partner standing by a guitar hanging from a hook. He took it down and strummed the strings, every string sounded out of tune.
“Why would a aquarium have a guitar to purchase?” Smart Beavis asked, looking at Smart Butthead.
“Not sure, quite droll though.” He said, walking toward him. He set the shark down and reached for the guitar, Smart Beavis handing it over to him.
“Indeed. Come on, let’s rest over by that window over there.” Smart Beavis said, pointing toward the area of interest.
Smart Butthead agreed and carried both the shark and guitar over. He sat on a crate box while Smart Beavis laid on multiple rugs placed together, he took his flashlight from his robe pocket and set it down, twisting the knob until the light was dim. Smart Butthead strummed the guitar a couple of times, the out of tune sound piercing his ears a bit. He started to tune the guitar as best as he could.
“You know how to play guitar?” Smart Beavis asked.
“A little bit, I used to play it a lot in my youth.” Smart Butthead answered, finishing tuning the guitar. He strummed it again, sounding perfect. “Uhm- Any requests?” He asked.
Smart Beavis thought for a second, “Nothing comes to mind, go ahead.” He said.
Smart Butthead thought for a moment before quickly strumming the guitar to a song that he picked. He began playing, his fingers dancing from string to string quickly until it calmed down and the sound slowed.
“If you don’t mind… Could you sing?” Smart Beavis asked.
Smart Butthead strummed a few more strings before considering his partner’s request. His voice was small and timid before he gained the confidence to sing louder. “If words could make wishes come true… I’d save every day like a treasure, and then… Again, I would spend them with you…” He stopped singing and just continued strumming.
Smart Beavis listened silently, watching each string being plucked by his lover. The song surrounded the entire room as he played. After a while Smart Butthead hummed the rest lyrics until he started to sing quietly again. “Except for the memory of how they were answered by you… But there never seems to be enough time, to do the things you want to do once you find them. I’ve looked around enough to know, that you’re the one I want to go through time with…” He strummed the few last chords until the song ended.
Smart Butthead’s heart was racing, he hasn’t played for anyone in a while. He turned from Smart Beavis in embarrassment, setting the guitar down.
“That was wonderful… Smart Butthead. A amazing experience than anything I have ever listened to.” Smart Beavis said, lifting himself up to the crate next to his lover.
“No… It was bad, I messed up a couple of notes, and I was off key in my singing.” He said.
“So? I can’t even play anything and you manage to play an entire song right in front of me!” Smart Beavis said happily, throwing his arms around his lover.
Smart Butthead melted into his partner’s embrace, hugging him tightly. “Thank you… I… Really appreciate that.” He whispered.
Smart Beavis smiled, breaking the embrace. “No problem! We should get back home now, it’s getting late.” He pointed toward the window, the sun was almost gone.
“No… Why don’t we sleep here tonight? We can find some blankets in the shop.” Smart Butthead asked.
“You sure? We can go home if you’re uncomfortable with it.” Smart Beavis asked.
Smart Butthead smilied softly, “No, I’m sure. I’ll always be okay when I’m with you.” He said.
Smart Beavis felt his heart beat faster, “Oh… Alright. I’ll go gather some blankets then.” He said.
The smarts set up their homemade bed by using a large piece of a wood panel and some other stuffed animals. They also find a couple of blankets on a rack, they set them on the bed and laid down on it. Smart Beavis turned around to twist the knob of his flashlight off, once he did, the entire room was dark. The two rested into each others arms until they fell asleep.
