Work Text:
When Amanda came to visit Todd this time, she keenly noticed that the vibe between her brother and Dirk was different, more intimate, to be exact.
Not that the two of them weren’t close before; everyone knew they were practically inseparable. If Todd and Dirk weren’t seen together, it could only mean one thing: there was serious trouble brewing.
But before, their relationship was like mates, now it was different, much more touchy-feely – not the sort of thing you’d normally see between friends. For example, while watching TV on the sofa, Dirk was practically snuggled up in Todd’s lap, the distance between them far less than standard social spacing; and this wasn’t any better at dinner, where Amanda witnessed Dirk feeding Todd a mouthful of dessert.
Taking advantage of Dirk being out to put the rubbish out, Amanda finally couldn’t resist asking Todd: “Are you and Dirk together? Is he your boyfriend? Have you lot been sleeping together?”
Todd scratched his head, avoiding Amanda’s gaze, suddenly appearing intensely interested in the chair next to him: “No… no, no, not at all, not yet anyway.”
Amanda stared at him for a moment, shrugged, and said nothing more.
The next day, Dirk stood in front of Todd with a grave expression: “Mona’s gone missing. I left her on the dining table, but there’s nothing there now.”
“Maybe she’s changed her form,” Todd said.
“Mona promised me that for the next few years, she’d stay in doll form unless absolutely necessary,” Dirk looked at him sideways, pulling a face. “Do you reckon you could ask Amanda? I saw Mona at dinner yesterday, but she’s definitely not here now.”
“It wasn’t Amanda,” Todd muttered, craning his neck to look at the table: “Did you move her somewhere else?”
“Nope,” said Dirk. He looked worried.
Todd was left with no choice but to text Amanda: “Hi Amanda, do you remember that doll on the table yesterday? That was Mona, she’s gone missing today. Not saying you took her away, not saying you didn’t, just wondering if you have any idea where she might’ve gone, or what she might’ve changed into?”
After a while, they received a message from Amanda: “Hi Todd, I remember Mona. Not saying you and Dirk have been sleeping together, not saying you haven’t, but if Dirk were to have gone back to his room and pulled back the duvet, he’d find Mona nestled nicely under the covers.”
