Chapter Text

Carter stared at his textbook like it might have all the answers of the universe. He finally reached a decision to become an Egyptologist, recently, and his first university exam for the semester on the subject is coming up. He looked up, watching his younger sister, Cleopatra, playing with her dolls on the floor. Kahmunrah and Larry were watching her to make sure she doesn't get hurt.

“Are you sure you don't want to play, Carter?” Cleopatra asked, the three-year-old giving Carter her famous doe-eyed look.

“I'm sorry, Cleo, but I really need to study, right now,” Carter said, gesturing to his textbook.

“But you’ve been studying foooorever” Cleopatra dramatically sprawls across Carter’s legs, “Can’t you take a break for a little bit?”

Carter shakes his head, “learned how to do this from dad”

Larry snickers “Cleo leave your brother alone” he walks over and scoops her up, “sorry about that Carter, how’s studying going?” Larry tucks Cleo under his arm.

“Larry that is not how you hold a child” Kahmunrah admonishes him and takes Cleo “here princess why don’t we go for a walk” he puts Cleo on his hip.

“Can I play with your kitties?” Cleo asks looking up at Kahmunrah, “please dad?”

“Of course my dear, let's go find them” Kahmunrah walks off with Cleo to give Carter time to study.

Carter gets up from his spot on the floor and stretches with his textbook in one hand, “I feel like I don’t have enough space in my brain for everything,” Carter says. “I know everything from dad’s stories but it’s so much more than the old stories of the gods and Sepati’s rule was so long and all the rulers after him…” Carter moans, “it’s so much”

Larry pats his shoulder, “No one needs you to remember the entirety of all Egyptian history, you’ve got an edge on everyone else you can actually read and write ancient Egyptian”

“That's true, but a huge chunk of my grade for this semester depends on this exam,” Carter said. “Sure, I could write my answers in hieroglyphics, but would it count as extra credit? I doubt it.”

“Just relax,” Larry said. “I'm sure you'll ace it.”

“Thanks,” Carter said, smiling in a relieved way. “I still need to study, though.”

“I need to check on everyone,” Larry said. “Are you gonna be okay on your own?”

“I'll be fine,” Carter said. Larry left to do his rounds.

While Carter is studying for his Egytology exam, Mia is helping Bethany study for her law exam.

“You got this, Bethany,” Mia encouraged.

“I know I do,” Bethany said with a sigh. “It's just that my professor expects me to learn so much in so little time.”

“Reminds me of one of my professors back in law school,” Mia said, rolling her eyes. “Just relax. You're more high-strung than Phoenix was during his first trial.”

“Right; Mr. Wright was a defense attorney before he became a prosecutor,” Bethany said. “What was he like, back then?”

“He was more optimistic,” Mia said, “with a genuine desire to defend others who can't defend themselves. I think I'm starting to see that old Phoenix come back a bit when President Gant was elected.”

“Enough to become a defense attorney, again?” Bethany asked.

“Not quite, but the potential is there,” Mia said.

“That's good to hear,” Bethany said.

“Bethany! Ms. Mia!” Cleopatra said, rushing up to Bethany and Mia.

“Hello, Cleopatra,” Mia said. “How are you, this evening?”

“Good!” Cleopatra said. “Grandma said that she's going to teach me how to put on makeup the way she does!”

“Despite Larry and I saying that Cleopatra is too young to wear makeup,” Kahmunrah said, rolling his eyes.

“Well, I bet you'll look great,” Bethany said with a smile.

“Are you studying, too?” Cleopatra asked.

“Yes, I am,” Bethany said.

“Everyone is busy studying, tonight!” Cleopatra said, a frustrated tone in her voice.

“Because everyone is trying to gain the skills necessary for their dream careers,” Kahmunrah said gently. “Even your uncle Ahkmenrah and I needed to study before we became Pharaohs.”

“Really?” Cleopatra looks up, “what about me am I going to have to study too dad?”

“One day yes” Kahmunrah brushes a lock of hair out of her face, “but you have a long time before that day comes”

“Bethany?” Jane walks by, “oh Hi uncle Kah, Cleo, Mai-”

Cleo put her hands on her little hips, “You will address me as princess Cleopatara”

Mai snorts covering a laugh and looks over at Kahmunrah, “don’t say it” he whispers, “I know…”

Jane and Bethany chuckle, “S-sorry princess Cleopatra” Jane says with a bow, “Does anyone know where the extra safety pins are? I am almost done with this dress” Jane explains.

“Can I see the dress?” Cleo asks.

“Sure” Jane says with a smile, “just don’t touch it ok, I need to take it to my mentor tomorrow, if she likes it I’ll finally get the internship.”

“I think there’s some in Larry’s office check the bottom drawer” Bethany says. “I think James is still in there going over his flight manual”

“Thanks” Jane says, “hey did Frankie come back from his audition yet?”

A frustrated growl comes from the main entrance, as Frankie stalks inside “if anyone needs me I’m gonna go hang my self in the hall of animals just cut me down so the lions can eat me after I’m dead!”

“Welp guess he didn’t get the part” Jane says, “Poor Frankie fourth failed audition this week…”

“That was quite a reaction” Kahmunrah comments, “I can’t imagine why he isn’t landing any parts”

“Really uncle Kah you can’t think of any reason someone wouldn’t cast him?” Bethany says

Cleopatra takes off in a run toward the main room and finds Frankie laying on floor staring at ceiling, while Teddy and his horse look over him “Maybe I’ll just ask McPhee to hire me as a night guard and I’ll take over so Larry can retire one day” Frankie grumbles.

“Now son this is just a minor set back maybe you just need a break” Teddy smiles seeing Cleopatra, “oh good evening princess”

Cleopatra sits down next to Frankie, “Hello Mr President” she lays on Frankie’s chest, “it’s ok Frankie if people don’t like your face they don’t deserve to hear your voice, you can just sing for me”

Frankie sighs and pats Cleopatra’s back, “Thank you princess”

“Cleopatra, how many times have I told you not to run off” Kahmunrah says walking up.

“But dad we’re in our own kingdom it’s fine” Cleopatra hugs Frankie’s neck, “and I was running to my Medjay”

“Is everything alright” Ahkmenrah asks walking by

“Yes my acting carrier is just over before it even starts” Frankie grumbles, “just kinda laying here and thinking about my life”

“Well you have five more minutes to wallow” Teddy says, “and then you’re getting up”

“Yeah” Cleopatra echos “that’s an order”

“Is America not here?” Kahmunrah asks not seeing the nation with Ahkmenrah as he often is, “or is he with your daughter?”

“He is in DC right now” Ahkmenrah states, “He got a few meetings with President Gant she’s been seeking his advice a lot lately”

“At least she listens to America more than his most recent presidents,” Kahmunrah said with a sigh. “When will he be back?”

“Next week,” Ahkmenrah said. “He promised to help Eliza with her studies when he returns.”

“Is Eliza studying to be a doctor, too?” Cleopatra asked.

“Yes, she is,” Ahkmenrah said. “And America is helping her when he isn't too busy with his duties as a nation or caring for his patients.” America had opened his own practice next to the museum, and it's very successful, with America tending to all kinds of patients.

“Do his patients know where he is?” Larry asked, walking up.

“Yes; he always leaves a notice beforehand,” Ahkmenrah said.

“Mr. America says that he needs to give me some shots when he gets back,” Cleopatra said with a slight frown. “I hate shots.”

“They're supposed to help you stay healthy,” Larry said. “You hate being sick even more, don't you?”

“Yeah, I do,” Cleopatra said after a bit of thought.

“That's why you need those shots,” Larry said.

“Didn't Dad say that Uncle Ahk got sick after getting his shots?” Cleopatra asked.

“I did, because I used to get sick a lot when I was little,” Ahkmenrah said.

“Why?” Cleopatra asked, curious.

“Various reasons,” Ahkmenrah said. “Did Eliza and Mr. America tell you about these special function our bodies have to protect us from illness?”

“They call it the immune system,” Cleopatra said. “Why? Is there something wrong with yours?”

“Yes it would seem so, Mine doesn't work properly” Ahkmenrah says, “that’s why your Dad had to take care of me so much when we were young and why I got sick when I had to get those shots”

“Why’s Frankie on the floor?” Larry asks Teddy

“He’s being dramatic” Teddy says, “moody teenagers”

“I’m only eight” Frankie grumbles, “I’m getting up” he reaches up for the horse’s bridle and makes a soft clicking sound and the chestnut stallion lifts its head and backs up to help Frankie to his feet. He scoops up Cleopatra with one arm “Well princess do you need me to escort you somewhere tonight?”

“Yes my loyal guard” Cleopatra says with a small giggle, “you may take me to see my grandmother”

Frankie looks over to Larry and Kahmunrah they both nod, “Very well your highness” Frankie places Cleopatra on the horse’s saddle and leads the animal off in a slow trot while Cleopatra hangs on.

“No one spoils that girl more than him” Larry says

“No, there isn't,” Kahmunrah agreed.

“You DO try to outdo Frankie, however,” Ahkmenrah said. “You and Larry absolutely dote on Cleopatra every time you see her.”

“Well, she IS a princess,” Kahmunrah said.

“And she won't stay this small forever,” Larry adds.

“And I understand,” Ahkmenrah said. “Just be careful not to spoil her TOO much.”

“We won't,” Larry said.

Meanwhile, Frankie and Cleopatra find Shepseheret in the Egyptian exhibit.

“Hello, my dear granddaughter,” Shepseheret greets Cleopatra.

“Hi, grandma!” Cleopatra said. “Are you still going to teach me how to do makeup like you do?”

“Of course, dear one,” Shepseheret said, taking out the makeup. As Shepseheret taught Cleopatra how to put on Egyptian makeup, Eliza is studying up for when she finally gets into medical school.

“Relax, Eliza,” Dr. Byrd said. “You've got time until you actually have to prepare for medical school.”

“I know,” Eliza said. “I just,” a sigh, “I just want to make sure I make Dad America proud.”

“And I’m sure you will,” Dr. Byrd said. “You just need to take things one step at a time.”

“You're right,” Eliza said with a sigh. “It's just that I noticed how Dad America helps you treat the human residents here, and, well, I guess I just want to help, too.”

“And you'll get your chance, one day,” Dr. Byrd said. “For now, you have all the time in the world.”

“I know…” Eliza says “Dr Byrd when did you decide to be a doctor?” She asks

“Oh it was kinda decided for me” Dr Byrd admits “my parents were doctors my sister was a nurse, is just fell into it and did what I could to end unwinding while I was at it”

“All the doctors here are famous for doing something big,” Eliza says “ creating vaccines, organ transplants, you came up with composite theory Dr Cotton treated early colonists and even saved Dad America's life…how do I compete with any of that?”

Dr Byrd shakes his head, “you don't it's not a competition. History remembers the stories written down by millions but people remember the stories written on their hearts by that single person that was there when they needed it” Dr Byrd gestures around “who do you think is the most popular and beloved in this museum?”

“Oh um…I never thought about that” Eliza says and starts to think “I guess maybe Papa Ahk?”

“He's pretty up there” Dr Byrd admits, “But it's actually Larry, ask anyone here Larry has been there for all of us in some way a simple nightguard. There won't be any exhibits about him, he won't be written about in any history book” Dr Byrd touches his own chest with this hand over where his heart would be “but for all of us he'll always be here”

Eliza nods seeming to understand, “ok, I get it I think”

“I have an idea why don't we go over standard vaccines that way when America gets back from DC you can help him give Cleo her shots” Dr Byrd suggests.

“Good idea” Eliza says.

Meanwhile, Carter finishes his studying for his exam, only to still feel anxious about taking the exam.

“Reax,” Kahmunrah told his son. “You’ve been studying constantly. I am confident that you will pass.”

“I sure hope so,” Carter said. “This exam is very important.”

“All the more reason to relax,” Kahmunrah said. “You will pass this exam.”

“You’re right,” Carter said after a huge sigh from a deep breath. “I will.”

Chapter Text

America walked in the museum just after sunset.

“America, welcome back!” Teddy said.

“Thanks, Ted,” America said with a smile.

“Dad America, you're back!” Eliza said when she ran up.

“Hey, Eliza,” America said. “Where's your Papa Ahk?”

“He's hanging out with Uncle Kah and his family,” Eliza said. “You look tired, already.”

“Well, I DID have a long flight back to New York,” America said.

“Really I would have thought New York to DC wouldn’t have been that long” Eliza says.

America grumbles, “Well I wasn’t just in DC, Gant had to make an appearance out in Arizona. I took a separate flight back” he stretches and rubs his neck, “I’m gonna see Ahk and maybe crash for the night in the guest room”

“Ok” Eliza says, “we can do some of my studying tomorrow night maybe?”

“Oh right, I- I forgot about that I’m sorry Eliza” America apologies, “Just so much on my mind”

“It’s ok really, Dr Byrd has been going over a bunch of stuff with me and I’ve been reading Dr Cotton’s notes” Eliza says, “you want me to make you some coffee?”

“Oh my god yes coffee” America says and hugs Eliza, “best daughter ever” he lets go and he and Eliza head toward the breakroom, “So how has everything been on the home front?”

“Well nothing big” Eliza says starting the coffee pot, “Carter and Bethany are both doing well in school, they’ve got those big exams tomorrow, Jane got that internship at the little fashion house not far from here, James is piloting his first flight tomorrow night so Jed and Octavius are a nervous wreck”

“Naturally” America says grabbing a mug from the shelf, “James will be fine it’s not like he’ll be alone”

Eliza takes the pot off the coffee maker and pours the fresh coffee into the mug for America, “Papa Ahk’s missed you he’s been kinda lost these last few days”

“I know, I’ve missed him too." America takes a sip of the coffee and sighs out, “through the power of caffeine all things are possible.”

“The only major drama” Eliza says pour herself a cup of coffee, “is how badly Frankie’s auditions have been going, none of the local theaters will take him”

“Because of the way he looks?” America asks knowing the answer, “poor guy, all the composite people are struggling. If one person would take a chance on him he’d be seen as one of the greatest performers ever.” Father and daughter start walking out of the breakroom fresh coffee still in hand,

“Frankie’s giving it all he has” Eliza comments, “He just went out for another audition today”

“So that’s why Teddy is waiting up front” America says, “I’m guessing the rest of our family is upstairs?”

Eliza shakes her head, “In the planetarium listening to uncle Kah retell stories about the stars, you know how that’s the only thing that calms Carter down”

“Yeah, I bet he’s still insanely nervous,” America said, heading upstairs. “I bet he’ll do well, though.”

“Yeah, he will,” Eliza agreed, following America.

Tonight seems peaceful, all things considered, Connor said.

“It is,” Larry said, a sleeping Cleopatra next to him. Larry looked at the scene in front of him. Everyone is listening intently to Kahmunrah. James was looking over his flight manuel one more time to make sure he aces his first flight. Jane was sketching her latest design. Ahkmenrah was sitting quietly. Jedediah and Octavius were trying to hide how worried they were over James.

“Hey, Ahk,” America said, sitting down next to his husband.

“Hello, love,” Ahkmenrah said. “You only just missed the best story.”

“Oh, did I?” America asked.

“There are still plenty of stories to tell; do not worry,” Ahkmenrah said with a grin. “How was the flight?”

“Exhausting,” America said. “Then again, so was the meeting. I swear, the only thing more exhausting is dealing with antivaxers at my clinic.”

“I wonder why people like those exist,” Ahkmenrah said, shaking his head.

“I ask myself that all the time,” America said. “I tell them what life was like before vaccines, even sometimes show them my smallpox scars, but they usually still won’t listen!”

“Sadly, they might not listen even after Osiris claims their children’s lives,” Shepseheret said.

“I think you might be right about that,” America said, a frustrated tone in his voice. “I keep telling those idiots that their kids might die without those vaccines, but do they listen? No!”

“You sound particularly frustrated about this,” Ahkmenrah said.

“Because I was looking over the charts of this kid I’m supposed to check out tomorrow, and she doesn’t have any vaccines for everything,” America said. “Not. A single. One.”

“Is there anyone to call about that?” Ahkmenrah asked.

“If those parents don’t listen like they usually don’t, I might have to call CPS,” America said. “Hopefully, it will make the parents listen. I don’t want that girl to spend the rest of her childhood in a state home.”

“I don’t think that’s what anyone would want,” Ahkmenrah said. “But you must do what is best for your patients.”

“I know I do,” America said with a sigh.

Ahkmenrah sneaks a quick kiss, “we all know you do, how did the meetings with Gant go? How is she doing?”

“She’s doing too much” America says, “but to be fair she’s cleaning up a massive mess. Merlin’s been keeping her sane, she’s been working with him pretty closely to keep project Avalon going. She’s also planning running for reelection so you know a lot to manage” America leans on Ahkmenrah, “I’m just happy to be home”

“I’m happy you’re home too” Ahkmenrah says putting one arm around America

“Dad I can feel you worrying” James says looking up from his manual, “You know I’m gonna be ok right?”

Octavius is sitting on James shoulder watching him study, “I know son…I just still can’t help but worry” he looks over to catch Kahmunrah’s attention just as he finishes up a story.

Kahmunrah pats Carter’s shoulder and stands up, “Yes general did you need something?”

“Those metals I requested from you, did you and the brother finish them?” Octavius asks.

Kahmunrah takes three small metals on silver colored chains from a pouch on his belt, “Ahk was able to carve the images you asked for with some help from your war priest, we are not very familiar with your gods I’m afraid” he hands the metals to James, Jane and Bethany walk over, Jedediah is perched on Bethany’s shoulder.

“Oh yeah” Jedediah comments, “This was Oct’s idea, we can’t look after ya kids once you go out in ta the world, but there’s folk bigger than us that can”

James picks up one of the metals depicting a roman woman with a spear and shield, “Minerva” James says.

“Yes, there are two of Minerva one for each of your sisters” Octavius explains, “A goddess of wisdom, war and craft a good woman to have on your side”

“Thanks Dad” Jane takes one of the metals from James and Bethany takes the other.

“You cool with this pop?” Bethany slides the chain on around her neck, “I thought you were more a monotheistic type”

“Ain’t no shame in coverin yur bases” Jedediah says

James look at the metal left for him, “Mercury the protector of travelers” He slides the chain over his neck , “Thanks dad”

Octavius leans and touches James cheek, “I know the three of you are capable and confident adults but we will always worry a little bit about you. The world out there is large and terrifying even if you just see these are a small piece of home you take with you that is enough for me”

James tilts his head a bit to sort of nudge Octavius, “Love you dad”

Frankie trudges in and sits next to Carter, “hey…” Frankie mutters looking down trodden

“Hey” Carter responds, “you’re just in time dad’s telling us old stories…” he starts to ask but sees the look on Frankie’s face, Carter knows how things went, “bad day?”

“Yhea” Frankie slouches, “I don’t get it, maybe I’m not meant to do this…” Frankie sighs looking at a flyer for another local theater, “one last shot if this doesn't pan out I’m just going to be a night guard, there’s no shame in that right? At least I feel like I belong here”

“Well yhea” Carter says “and someone’s gotta take over for Larry one day but Frankie don’t give up”

Kahmunrah takes his spot back next to Larry, “what is this I hear about giving up?” he sees the flyer in Frankie’s hand, “you’re still at it, good…let me see that”

Frankie hands it over, “There’s this little theater doing a musical based on the odyssey, I’m going to try out for it later this week if that dosen’t work…I donno I guess I’ll just stop”

“What part are you going for?” Larry asks picking up Cleopatra and cuddling her while she sleeps

“Poseidon,” Frankie says, “he has the two most impressive songs and the way they plan on depicting the gods on stage I’ll either be in so much make up no one will see what I look like or I won’t even be on stage so this” Frankie gestures to his face, “won’t be a factor”

“Nonsense” Kahmunrah hands back the flyer, “You will try out for Odysseus it won’t be hard for you, you have met him after all”

Frankie starts to protest “But uncle Kah-”

“No buts” Kahmunrah points a finger at Frankie “you have been given an order”

Larry’s phone buzzes and Cleopatra moves in her sleep, he readjusts her in his arms and looks at his phone for a text message from Nick.

Nick- hey dad just checking in how’s home

Larry- it’s been quiet how’s the DJ game?

Nick- ugh not as glamorous as I thought, but I met some people that want to write a new musical

Larry- that’s exciting

Nick- yeah I might be coming back home for a bit just till I get my own place or this musical and book thing takes off

Larry- great we can talk all about it when you get home,

Nick- K love you dad

Larry- Love you too, Nicky

Larry put his phone away, curious about what the musical is even about. However, he is looking forward to hearing it from Nick.

Chapter Text

America rubbed his temples, trying to hold back the migraine the antivax couple in front of him were giving him.

“Look, I was around when smallpox was running rampant, and it was eventually eradicated BECAUSE of vaccines!”

“You don’t know that,” the mother, Allison Hart said. “Besides, they cause autism.”

“One, the whole autism thing is false,” America said. “Second,I have seen evidence firsthand that vaccines DO work, that they ARE necessary, and not only that, they are required BY LAW!” America glared at the couple. “So, either you have your daughter Daisy gets vaccinated, or I call CPS and you lose custody of her. Either way, the results will be the same: Daisy will get her shots.”

“We will not put toxic chemicals in our daughter’s body,” Andy Hart said. America sighed, taking out his phone and calling CPS.

“Y-you’re serious?” Allison asked. America nodded before CPS picked up, America telling them everything.

“Yes, I have evidence; I’m looking at Daisy Hart’s medical charts, right now,” America said. “No, she’s not vaccinated at all. What? You got similar reports from Daisy’s teacher?”

The case worker on the other end sighs, “Yes, I’f you want to email me copies of those charts we can start building a case, this poor girl’s aunt and uncle have been trying to get through to her stubborn parents for years”

“Mom, please can I just get the shots” Daisy asks quietly,

“No baby you don’t know what those awful chemicals do” Allison says defiantly, “they could make you like Charlie that boy down the street the one who has to go to that special school”

“I don’t care if it makes me like Charlie” Daisy objects, “I LIKE Charlie he’s nice, I’d rather be like him then get sick”

“I can’t believe this” Allison takes her daughter’s hand, “we’re going and we’re not coming back I don’t care how many calls you make” the Heart parents storm out and Daisy offers America a slight wave as they leave.

Eliza slinks in as the Hearts are leaving, and just sees a frustrated America flop down in his chair at his desk. “That bad hu?” she asks

America only growls pinching the bridge of his nose “one crackpot releases an ill informed research paper and it ruins everything for the rest of the medical community”

“You just can’t get through to some people” Eliza says, “Remember how hard the fight for ending unwinding was…well still is”

“Oh good lord” America throws his head back in defeat “Can you imagine if PC had also been antivax I don't even want to think about it”

“Come on Dad it’s about time you closed for the day” Eliza says helping America clean up, “You can gripe to all the doctors in the museum”

“Yeah” America takes a few more minutes to stare at the ceiling, “what are you doing up this early?” he asks Eliza.

“I couldn’t sleep” Eliza says, “and I got up to make sure Frankie made it to his Audition on time, that and I gotta stop at the hardware store on the corner Larry said he needs to work on some pipes that have been making a weird noise I told him I’d pick up some stuff he need for that”

“Look at you running errands and stuff” America says sitting up.

“Gotta take care of the family” Eiza says with a grin “you’re doing Cleo’s shots tonight right? How do you think she’ll take it?”

“Well if she’s going to take after Larry it’ll be fine” America says getting up, “If she acts like like Kah she’ll mope and whine and insult me”

“Watching you be insulted by a three-year-old will be funny” Eliza laughs “maybe we can bribe her with treats”

America walks with Eliza, “Ahkmenrah did tell me about some honey date cake thing he and his brother used to get as kids when they were good, or more like Ahk got it and shared with Kah you know maybe we could find the recipe somewhere you think their mom knows how to make it?”

“Shepseheret, was a queen I don’t think she did much of her own cooking” Eliza says, “Dr Byrd has been trying to find some Egyptian recipes to impress her maybe he knows”

America grins “Oh has he? What’s going on with him and the former queen?”

“He claims they’re ‘just friends’ “Eliza says, “but I could ask you the same thing about Merlin and President Gant”

America chuckles, “You know Dr Byrd and Merlin are the same person?” he sighs, “looks like he’s got a thing for powerful women, come on let’s go shopping before we go home”

A few blocks away from the clinic Frankie is giving one last ditch effort at a local theater, He along with a crowd of other young hopeful actors are all waiting to perform in front of a panel of people sitting at a table in front of a stage. The casting director, stage director, two producers and another man at the end of the table that’s barely awake. The man at the end has long brown hair just hanging down and is wearing sunglasses.

Frankie mills around with the other actors but none of them seem willing to talk to him. ‘Great just like all the other times’ A young woman walks up to him while they’re backstage waiting, “Hi I’m Mary Elizabeth” she offers her hand, and Frankie shakes it, “I’ve seen you before you’re part of the American Museum of Natural History right? Well one of the performers for the Interactive Egypt exhibit”

“I am, my name’s Franklin well everyone calls me Frankie” Frankie says, “are you trying out too?”

Mary Elizabeth nods, “For Penelope, oh I’m so nervous I’ve never done any professional acting or signing”

“You’ll be fine” Frankie tells her, “Just gotta get out of your own head, no one’s looking to see you they want to see the character you’re playing, so if you mess up it’s not you that looks silly it’s Penelope”

“That’s really good advice” Mary Elizabeth says, “are you trying out for Odysseus?”

Frankie thinks about it for a minute, “Well I was going for Poseidon, but my uncle really wants me to try for the lead”

“You should” Mary Elizabeth says, “I’ve heard you sing, you’d make a really good leading man,” she smiles and there’s a cute little wrinkle to her nose when she does.

“Mr. Roosevelt!” The casting director calls and Frankie runs out onto the stage, “You stay here” the casting director points at another young man, “ok you two let’s hear Ruthlessness” he snaps his fingers “Go”

Frankie jumps right into his signing part as Poseidon while the other actor stumbles a bit before getting his footing as Odysseus. The man with long hair and sunglasses that’s been half asleep through all the performances holds up his hand, “stop” he says and lowers his sunglasses, “switch roles, let’s hear it again from the top”

The casting director nods, “Well you heard him”

Frankie looks over at the other actor and they switch places then start the song again. The man in sunglasses leans forward now and just behind his folded hands Frankie can see a smile. The performance is not interrupted but at the end the man stands up and throws his arms up in triumph, “YES” he gets up from his seat and climbs onto the stage, “You you’re my Odysseus!” He says standing in front of Frankie and excitedly pats Frankie’s cheek, “Look at that face you were made for this, that voice, that conviction yes, yes you’re perfect!” He points at the other actor, “You did decently you’re on the short list for Poseidon, but you” he pulls Frankie into a side hug, “What’s your name kid?”

“Franklin Roosevelt,” Frankie says, “But everyone calls me Frankie”

“Jorge no he’s....just look at him” the casting director says “we can’t...the amount of makeup”

“I know he’s perfect” Jorge beams, “No one would ever forget this face, we’ll be the first musical with a composite person as the lead” Jorge takes off his sunglasses, “how about it Frankie wanna make history?”

“Wait but you’re casting because I’m actually good right?” Frankie asks.

“I wouldn’t have you as lead otherwise” Jorge says, “I wrote this musical as an album years ago and I’ve been looking for just the right voice for Odysseus and you are it”

“Well if this is what you want” the casting director sighs, “it’s just we’ll need so much makeup-”

“Nope no make up” Jorge says, “his face stays the way it is, this is the face of a warrior king, Frankie be here tomorrow for costume fitting” Jorge grabs Frakie by the shoulders, “I’m gonna make you a star.”

“Th-thank you,” Frankie stammered out.

“Rehearsal will be tomorrow, 3:00 sharp,” Jorge said. “Don’t be late.”

“Got it,” Frankie said as he left.

Meanwhile, America and Eliza are grocery shopping.

“Didn’t you say that you were going to make tacos, tonight?” Eliza asked, looking at some taco shells.

“Yeah, I did,” America said, grabbing the taco shells and looking for the other ingredients. “I might get some beer for me and Ahk, too,” America said. “I feel like I might need some. After dealing with that family.” Right when America said that, the phone rang.

“Hello?” America said.

“Yes, this is Holly Hart,” Holly said. “I just gained custody of Daisy, and I’d like to schedule an appointment to have her vaccinated.”

“Really? That’s great!” America said, going to the calendar app on his phone. “Does this mean you have legal custody of Daisy?”

“As of now,” Holly said. “She got dropped off at my husband’s and my house just a half hour ago.”

“Cool,” America said. “So, what’s the best time for the appointment?”

“Does this Saturday at 12:00 sound good?” Holly asked. “According to your office’s website, you’re only closed on Sundays.”

“Yeah, this Saturday sounds perfect,” America said, making the note on the aforementioned date and time. “See you guys then.”

“Oh, and by the way, Dr. America?” Holly said. “Thanks for making that call. That and the email of Daisy’s medical records was the straw that broke the camel’s back. I can’t believe that my sister and brother-in-law bought into that antivax conspiracy stuff.”

“I can’t believe anyone would,” America said. “I saw firsthand how amazing vaccines actually are.”

“Oh, yeah; I saw a documentary where you and Canada got smallpox as kids,” Holly said. “Well, see you Saturday!”

“See you Saturday,” America agreed before hanging up.

“So, Daisy is getting her shots, after all?” Eliza asked.

“Yeah, she is,” America said with a smile. “Which is a relief.”

“It is!” Eliza said. “At least one kid managed to escape her loony antivax parents.”

“I’ll say, America said. “I still can’t believe how stubborn those parents are. I explained how vaccines actually work, showed them my smallpox scars, and everything.”

“Some people can’t be reasoned with,” Eliza said, shaking her head as she and America walked to the grocery store checkout. As if to prove Eliza’s point, the couple right in front of them were complaining about President Gant banning unwinding.

“Why would anyone elect a president that willingly lets feral teens run around free?” the wife asked. “I don’t feel safe just leaving the house, anymore!”

“Good stay home” America comments

The husband turns around “how dare you!”

While the couple are distracted the cashier 'accidently’ rings up the steaks twice.

“No how dare you” America snaps back “you know how many crimes are actually committed by roving gangs of teens less than twenty percent and most of them only lash out cause thier homeless at least Gaunt is doing something to fix it”

The woman waves him off “well who asked you anyway” she rolls her eyes and is shocked to see her groceries are much more than she thought. The couple complain the whole way out to the parking lot.

The cashier waits for them to leave and scans her employee discount card for America and Eliza. “I happen to like president Gant my little brother was almost unwound. Lucky I got custody of him first.”

“Some people” America says with a head shake

“Yeah but there's good people to balance it” the cashier says with a smile, “I'd rather focus on those people”

“Sounds like a plan,” america said, paying for his stuff and leaving.

Chapter Text

“So, this Holly will get her vaccinations, after all?” Ahkmenrah asked the following sundown during family dinner.

“Yeah; her aunt is bringing her over on Saturday,” America said, putting onions in his taco.

“At least that girl will finally be able to live healthily,” Eliza said, taking a bite at her loaded taco.

“Speaking of which,” Ahkmenrah said, “how was work, otherwise?”

“Pretty good,” America said. “Just checkups, mainly. The only sick patients I delt with only had minor illnesses.”

“That is good to hear,” Ahkmenrah said, sipping his beer.

“So, any news on how Frankie’s audition went?” Eliza asked.

“From what Kahmunrah has told me, he got the part of Odysseus,” Ahkmenrah said.

“Great! He finally landed a part,” America said with a grin.

“One that Kahmunrah wanted him to have,” Ahkmenrah said. “He means well, but he still imposes his will on others from time to time.”

“Kah needs to learn to control that,” America said, taking a thoughtful bite of his taco.

“So, I hear the next interactive exhibit is tonight,” Eliza said, putting some sour cream and salsa on her next taco.

“It is,” Ahkmenrah said. “They are always fun to do.”

“They are,” America said, “but the one con I can think of is that I’m always worried that some guest will get you sick, Ahk. Your immune system isn’t exactly the best.”

“I can handle it. I have after all this time,” Ahkmenrah said.

“There was that one time you got a stomach bug from a guest a while back,” America said.

“A minor one,” Ahkmenrah reassured.

“A minor illness is still an illness,” America said.

“Dad, will you please relax?” Eliza said. “You act like Papa might get Ebola or something!”

“Love” Ahkmenrah takes America's hands “I know you're concerned and that's how you show you care but I am fine”

America hefts out a sigh “I just i worry” he squeezes Ahkmenrah's hands “I see so many sick people and I…that's how I lost you before”

“You won't be losing me again” Ahkmenrah assures him.

“ You Could skip the interactive exhibit” America says

Noo oo Mirabel scolds America what is wrong with you

Ahkmenrah rolls his eyes, “ No, although if you're this worried you're welcome to sit this once out. Perhaps you should” Ahkmenrah gets up and heads downstairs to join the others getting ready for the interactive exhibit.

Kahmunrah is handing Cleopatra over to Carter for the time they are performing in the interactive exhibit. “Now you be good for your brother, alright princess”

“Dad I want see all the guests!” Cleopatra complains

“You are still too little my sweet” Kahmunrah gently pokes her nose “when you are older and bigger we will find a way to work you into the exhibit”

“Okay…” Cleopatra still pouts, “big brother can we go play with the animals?”

Carter chuckles, “sure Cleo, have fun Dad and Larry”

“Only minor pouting” Larry says testing his bow, “not bad”

Frankie adjusts his layered armor, “hey Ahk is America getting ready?”

“He has concerns about catching something from one of the guests” Ahkmenrah says with a bit of a bite to his voice “he won't be joining us tonight”

“Uh hu” Frankie nods “um well I can improvise the combat demo”

“I can help with that Frankie…why don't you and Larry great our guests mother's agreed to help out tonight” Kahmunrah motions for them to go and puts a hand in Ahkmenrah's shoulder, “wait a moment little brother”

Ahkmenrah grumbles “I don't want to discuss this right now”

“ Mm-hum and what am I about to ask?” Kahmunrah asks, “did you and your husband have a fight?”

“He's not listening to me” Ahkmenrah says, “ I know he's worried about my health because he cares but it has become excessive.”

“Ah I see” Kahmunrah nods, “he has been away for a while and when was the last time the two of you spent time together just the two of you?”

Ahkmenrah looks down “it has been awhile, we haven't had much time to talk lately with all his work”

Kahmunrah nods “I thought so, you two need to sit and talk about this I can introduce you to a very good pair of therapist to help you with this” Kahmunrah pats his brother's shoulder “I worry about your health too why do you think I keep most of our guests from crowding you, but I know there are things beyond our control and I trust your judgement”

“Thank you” Ahkmenrah leans on his brother “I might take you up on that offer to speak with your therapists, it seems they have helped you”

Kahmunrah starts to lead Ahkmenrah to the waiting guests with one arm around his shoulders “ it has been a very enlightening experience but a great deal of work, communication is very important in a relationship”

“You’re right, it is,” Ahkmenrah agreed. “Maybe it’s trauma from losing me in his past life.”

“Perhaps it is,” Kahmunrah agreed. “In the meantime, we have an interactive exhibit to perform.

Eliza, meanwhile, watched from afar.

“So, I heard Uncle Ahk and Uncle America had a bit of a fight,” Carter said, sitting down next to Eliza.

“Dad means well, but he forgets that Papa can take care of himself,” Eliza said.

“I know,” Carter said. “But I think it’s trauma from his past life. You gotta look at things from both points of view.”

“You’re right,” Eliza said. “They can solve this problem. They might need some help, but they’ll get through this.”

After the performance, America and Ahkmenrah meet Lucius and Shepard.

“So…I sense that this argument you had earlier came from America’s trauma from his past life as Tamos, when he lost you to illness,” Lucius said.

Shepard nodded. “He doesn’t want to lose you, again,” he said.

“I know, but America forgets that I am a pharaoh,” Ahkmenrah said.

“I sense that the main problem is a lack of communication,” Lucius said. “Why not talk things out right here and now? Listen to each other.”

America sighed. “Ahkmenrah, in my past life, I had lost you to disease, and I don’t want it to happen again,” he said. “In my job as a doctor, I come across sick people all the time, and I can’t help but think about what if you had any of those illnesses. Even that stomach bug you had not too long ago had me worried sick.” Ahkmenrah nodded.

“I understand your concern,” Ahkmenrah begins, “but I can care for myself. If I fall ill, again, I can depend on you to make me well, again. But that does not mean that you should worry about every single germ that I might come into contact with.”

“You’re right,” America said with a sigh. “I just…I just don’t want to lose you, again.”

“And you won’t,” Ahkmenrah said, gently taking America’s hands in his. “I promise.”

“And I’ll have to trust you on that,” America said, smiling gently.

With Jedediah and Octavius, they’re talking to James on how his flight went.

“You’ll get that pilot’s license in no time, James!” Jedediah said.

“Thanks,” James said. “I’m one step closer to being a pilot.”

“You and your sisters are growing up so fast,” Octavius said. “Next thing Jedediah and I will know, you’ll be moving out, soon.”

“I know,” James said. “But I’ll still drop by to see you from time to time.”

“We know you will,” Jedediah said. “It’s just that your dad and I will still miss you from time to time.”

“I know,” James said. “And we’ll miss you, too.”

When Kahmunrah and Larry finished with the interactive exhibit, they talked about Ahkmenrah and America.

“It’s nice of you to help Ahk and America the way you did,” Larry said.

“I know, but I could tell that they need it, especially America,” Kahmunrah said. “I sense that America’s previous life has brought him trauma from losing Ahkmenrah to illness. And seeing sick people constantly at his job as a healer doesn’t really help things on that front.”

“I guess Ahk and America fought they way they did earlier was because he didn’t have a healthy way to process that trauma,” Larry hypothesized.

“That is a possibility,” Kahmunrah agreed. “That and a lack of communication. That was a cause of quite a few arguments we had.”

“I know,” Larry said. “Like the one we had last week.”

“The one about Cleo and her schooling?” Kahmunrah asks, “or the whole boundaries thing you keep saying I need to work on”

“The boundaries thing was something I said we both need to work on” Larry corrects him “I need help with it too, and we do still need to talk about Cleo going to school at some point”

“But that’s years away,” Kahmunrah says, brushing the idea off, “do we need to discuss this now?” he pulls Larry close, “and look at you in that outfit…we could go upstairs and get some time to ourselves”

“Kah…we’ve talked about this your awkward flirting is not how you weasel out of a conversation” Larry scolds “We do need to talk about Cleo going to school”

“Must we, right now?” Kahmunrah nuzzles Larry’s neck and kisses his jaw lightly, “my beautiful hunter, tell me you love me”

Larry smiles and knows he’s been sweet talked out of an argument, oh fine let Kah win this once, “I love you my Sun King, you are all the light in my life” Larry pulls him into a deep kiss and feels Kahmunrah sigh and relax in his arms, “Ok maybe a few minutes of just cuddling wouldn’t hurt” Larry says as he pulls back. They slip away to a quiet corner, Larry's favorite spot in the museum now where Kahmunrah first took him to relax. The spot is perfect just tucked away to give them some privacy but still where they can see and hear most of what’s going on. Larry lays in Kahmunrah’s lap and with a satisfied sigh the pharaoh leans down to kiss him.

Cleopatra plays with Dexter as the little capuchin darts between the fake trees, she laughs and chases him. Carter and Frankie watch her nearby, Frankie is still in his guard outfit and Cleopatra runs over to hang on his arm and smile up at him with a giggle. “Hello princess you’re full of energy tonight” Frankie says

“Up?” Cleopatra asks, and Frankie scoops her up, “Thank you” she giggles and cuddles up to Frankie, “Dad says you got a part in a play”

“I did” Frankie says, “I got a lead part in a play about the Odyssey”

“Uh huh the part dad ordered you to go for” Carter says, “you can tell him no you do know that”

“That’s the thing” Frankie says, “I wasn’t going to try out for the lead but when I did the audition the original writer saw me and made me sing Odysseus' part, it wasn’t uncle Kah’s doing” Frankie snorts, “much as I’d like to blame him”

“Who’s Odyeeuss?” Cleopatra asks, “what’s the odd-oo-see?”

“Odysseus was a greek king” Carter says, “The Odyssey is the story of him coming home from a war there were a lot of monsters and gods that didn’t want him to get back to his wife and son”

“That doesn’t sound like the gods from Dad’s stories” Cleopatra says.

“This story is about the Greek gods” Frankie says, “they’re a little different from the Egyptian gods”

Cleopatra looks up at Frankie wide eyed, “there are more stories about other gods?”

“There are all kinds of stories from all over the world” Carter tells her, “You know everyone here could tell you stories from their time and culture Cleo not just dad”

“I know” Cleopatra plays with the layered armor collar that’s part of Frankie’s guard outfit, and yawns a bit, “I’m sleepy” she leans on Frankie’s chest “sing to me my medjay”

“Come on little bug” Carter teases, “You’ve gotta go to bed”

Cleopatra clings to Frankie, “no not yet” she wines.

“I can carry her up, and one little song before you go to sleep” Frankie says with a grin

“Yay!” Cleopatra says with a slightly tired tone.

Frankie walks with Carter and sings to Cleopatra as she cuddles up to him and drifts off in his arms before they even reach the apartment steps. “You spoil her more than dad and Larry do” Carter says when they reach Cleopatra’s room and Frankie puts her down in her little bed.

“I know” Frankie says, “I can’t help it I’m supposed to be guard for both of you, you know” he chuckles, ‘though you don’t really need me to protect you”

Carter sighs, “Yeah not any more…I’ve been meaning to ask you something” Carter starts, “All those years ago when we first met…you were supposed to turn me in after you tracked me down…but you didn’t I always wondered why”

Frankie sighs “I’ll tell you something I’ve never told anyone else…I never turned anyone in. It didn’t feel right” he smiles, “you were special, I had memories of you” he points to his head, “deep in here there are about two or three unwinds that knew you, they wouldn’t let me turn you over even if I wanted to and you know I never wanted to”

“Mark and Victor…” Carter said. “My two best friends that were unwound!”

“You think I might have them in my head?” Frankie asked.

“It’s possible!” Carter said. “I should ask Uncle Ahk to see what he knows about figuring it out for sure.”

“You think he can help with that?” Frankie asked.

“There’s no harm in trying,” Carter said. “We should ask after getting Cleo in bed.”

“Sounds like a plan,” Frankie said, carrying Cleo to bed.

Chapter Text

He’s up earlier than the others like normal and has enough time to grab his one set of street clothes and some food from the storage crate kept in the basement. Frankie mulls over the names Carter had told him the night before, Victor and Mark. The memories of the unwinds he’s made up of have always been fragmented getting anything from them is like try to put together a puzzle without all its pieces, the tablet had brought back his entire life as Amon it could at least help him with some of Mark and Victor whatever is left of them maybe even explain why he always felt drawn to Carter. Frankie walks by where Carter is sleeping and stops just for a minute to watch the adopted prince thinking that maybe it’ll jog something of Mark or Victor, nothing it’s like they’re also asleep. Well no sense dwelling on it right now he has to go be Odysseus of Ithaca.

The first rehearsal everyone gets their parts, a few young actors grumble about Frankie getting the lead “some nobody off the street” one young man grumbles “not even a theater student”

“Oh but haven’t you heard the story” Mary Elizabeth says, “nobody is perfect for Odysseus” she smiles and takes her place next to Frankie, he's glad she got Penelope.

The grumbling stops when they start actually rehearsing. The stage director gives everyone notes and a schedule for regular rehearsals. The costume designers get measurements and the director tells Frankie to grow out his hair for the part. Mary Elizabeth gives Frankie her phone number just after they all let out for the day, “in case you want to practice our parts together, you may not need the practice singing but I sure do”

“Oh uh thanks” Frankie tucks the note with her phone number in his pocket, “I’d give you my number but um I don’t have a phone yet”

“You don’t?” Mary Elizabeth asks, “that’s so weird why not?”

“Well I wasn’t legally human till a year ago so I couldn’t sign up for one” Frankie explains, “I guess I could get one now”

“Well call me as soon as you do” Mary Elizabeth smiles and waves as she walks toward the bus stop and Frankie walks off to cross the road and back to the museum. It’s already nearing sunset when he sees America closing up his clinic for the day.

“Hey Mr America…long day?” Frankie asks as he falls instep beside him

“Well not as long as yesterday” America admits, “At least one kid got vaccinated like she’s supposed to today”

“Oh yeah?” Frankie shivers, “I always hated shots the PC doctors weren’t exactly gentle when my siblings and I had to get them”

“Yeah” America says, “I’d bet that wasn’t fun for you, I have to do Cleo’s vaccines tonight hopefully that won’t be a fight”

“Larry and Uncle Kah will make sure she behaves,” Frankie said.

“I sure hope so,” America said. “Most of the kids I vaccinate are usually so well-behaved.” The tablet’s magic activates as soon as Frankie and America walk in.

“Hi, Dr. America and Frankie,” Cleopatra greeted from Larry’s arms.

“Hi, Cleo,” America greeted. “Are you ready for your shots?”

“I sure am,” Cleopatra said. “Dad and Papa said they’ll treat me if I get my shots.”

“That’s great!” America said, giving Larry a grateful look. “Well, let’s go.” America took Cleopatra and brought her to where he and Dr. Byrd treat the human residents of the museum. America picked up the first needle he’s using to administer the vaccinations. “Are you ready for the first shot, Cleo?”

“Ready, Dr. America,” Cleopatra asked, holding her favorite stuffed lioness that Kahmunrah gave her.

“This will pinch a little,” America said, injecting the vaccine into Cleopatra.

“You see? It wasn’t that bad, was it?” America asked.

“It only hurt a bit,” Cleopatra said. “It wasn’t as bad as I thought!”

“You see?” Larry asked, handing Cleopatra a honey cake as a reward.

“Yummy!” Cleopatra said after taking a huge bite before taking another one.

“Where did you find the recipe for that?” America asked out of curiosity.

“Oh, Kahmunrah and Ahkmenrah used to sneak into the palace kitchens a lot when they were kids, and they learned the recipes to the various foods that the cooks made there.”Larry explains

“Good thing they did, in that case,” America said with a smile.

“I was never a good cook” Kahmunrah confesses, “but my brother managed a few recipes” he brushes back a bit of Cleopatra’s hair, “you are very brave my little princess”

“I’m a big brave girl” Cleopatra says with a smile and a mouth full of cake.

America finishes the round of vaccinations with Cleopatra barely flinching clearly distracted by her treat and her parents. “Look at that she complains less than you” America says teasing Kahmunrah.

“Dad did you complain when you got shots?” Cleopatra ask, “why they’re not that bad”

“The shots were not, I complained when I was sick and injured” Kahmunrah glares a bit at America, “because I was uncomfortable, tired and being used as a teaching tool without my consent”

“Get over it that was over three years ago” Dr Byrd calls from down the hall as he walks by

“Dad you were hurt?!” Cleopatra asks a little alarmed, “why what happened”

Larry sees the hesitation in Kahmunrah and jumps in to explain. “Someone tried to hurt me and your dad got in the way to protect me, don’t worry Cleo that person’s not around anymore.”

“Good” Cleopatra says with a nod and she hugs her stuffed lioness, “am I all done can I go play?”

“Yep you are all done” America says helping Cleopatra down from the counter she was sitting on, “you are best patient I’ve had all day”

“Of course I am a princess after all” Cleopatra says very sure of herself.

America just says , “uh hu” and holds in a laugh, “how could I forget”

Larry looks over at Kahmunrah and starts to say something, “You know-”

“- I know I know” Kahmunrah holds up a hand to stop Larry from getting out the full thought.

Frankie makes his way to the Egypt exhibit and sees Shepseheret comforting Ahkmenrah as he’s sitting up in his sarcophagus and shaking, “Uncle Ahk are you ok?” Frankie asks

“Just a bad dream” Ahkmenrah murmurs shaking, “did you need something Frankie?”

Frankie shuffles on his feet, “If you’re feeling bad it can wait, I don’t even know if you can help with this…I should go get America for you or your brother”

“Please go get his husband” Shepseheret says rubbing her son’s back to try and calm him, “It’s alright dear you’re safe everything’s fine”

“It’s not me I’m afraid for mother” Ahkmenrah leans on his mother’s shoulder and tries to make sense of the awful dream not understanding why a red bird would try to hurt an ancient king. Frankie nods and runs to get America just as Jimmy walks up.

“Good evening, your highnesses,” Jimmy greeted. “Is there a problem?”

“Just a nightmare,” Ahkmenrah said. “Nothing that should be too concerning.”

“Well, if you’re sure,” Jimmy said. “But in your time, dreams can sometimes be considered to be prophetic. If you want to talk about it, I’ll be upgrading Goddard.” At that, Jimmy left at the same time America arrived.

“Another bad dream?” America asked Ahkmenrah.

“Yes,” Ahkmenrah said as America walked up to hug him.

“Do you want to talk about it?” America asked. “You did say that your dreams tend to be about the future.”

“Jimmy said something similar earlier,”  Ahkmenrah said before sighing.

“Does that mean you’ll say what it is about?” America asked.

“Yes,” Ahkmenrah said with a nod.

“So, what happened in the nightmare?” America asked.

“Red birds attacking someone in an accent crown” Ahkmenrah shivers “I couldn't see his face, it feels cold in here”

“ It is a little chilly” America takes his jacket off and puts it on Ahkmenrah’s shoulders. “There’s no other details you can remember?”

Ahkmenrah shakes his head, “If it is a prophetic dream I’ll have it more than once”

“Red birds attacking a king…” America shakes his head, “I’m not good at interpreting the symbolism of dreams, who helped you with these nightmares before?”

“My brother” Ahkmenrah says,”He would find out what they meant for me and I would sleep in his bed for the next few nights” he gives America an awkward smile “can’t exactly do that now, the worst part about the dreams is I can’t wake myself up from them now”

“You didn’t go to your mom?” America asks

“I was afraid of waking father” Ahkmenrah admits, “they started when I was five, Kah just heard me crying in my room and he picked me up and carried me into his room”

“We can find somewhere quiet for you to just rest” America offers

“I’ll be fine” Ahkmenrah says “I just need to warm up and walk around”

“Then you keep my jacket” America says with a grin “it looks better on you anyway” America and Eliza stay by Ahkmenrah most of the night.

Larry has left his phone on the main desk where Octavius and Jededaih nervously pace near the phone. The phone vibrates with a loud ring and Jededaih has to use both hands to swipe up and answer the call, “Dad, pop I did it!” James says from the other end of the call “I mean not by myself but I did it the senior pilot let me land the plane he said it was a perfect landing”

“That’s wonderful” Octavius says with a sigh of relief

“We’re proud ya boy” Jededaih says, “and glad yur safe”

“Thanks” James pulls away from the phone for a minute when someone yells his last name, “Yeah I was just talkin to my folks…uh hu..Dad, Pop I gotta go”

“We love you James” Octavius says

“luv ya boy comeback safe ya hear?” Jedediah says

“Love you guys too” James says “I’ll be home in a few days bye”

Jedediah flops down next to the phone, “an you were freten over nothin” he teases Octavius

“How drunk are you right now?” Octavius asks, “we have to tell the girls their brother is safe”

“Right,” Jedediah said with a nod. Before they could, however, Larry walked in, carrying an unconscious man with blond hair with blue and green streaks. He was wearing a green shirt with jeans, and plain white sneakers. America and Ahkmenrah walked up at that moment.

“Earth?!?!?” America asked, surprised.

“You know this guy?” Larry asked.

“He’s one of my best friends, and literally the planet we’re on, right on…and he’s hurt,” America said, rushing to take Earth from Larry to treat him.

“Wait, wait, wait,” Larry said, “now you’re saying that our planet is alive? Like, literally alive?”

“Along with most of the celestial bodies in our solar system,” America said, taking off Earth’s shirt to examine his injuries. “He’s wounded. Ahk, get the first aid kit!” Ahkmenrah nodded and did what his husband told him to.

“Is that a tattoo of Earth’s and Uranus’s symbols intertwined with each other?” Jane asked, pointing to a tattoo on Earth’s right shoulder blade.

“Yeah; Earth and Uranus have been a couple for a while, now,” America explained, treating Earth’s injuries as soon as Ahkmenrah came back with the first aid kit. “Larry, were you the one who found him?”

“Yeah. He was lying in front of the museum, looking like he was in very bad shape,” Larry said.

“I’ll say,” America said. “He looks like he has been assaulted.”

“I agree,” Dr. Byrd said, kneeling down next to America to look more closely at Earth’s injuries. “I have to say; I never thought that I’d have my own planet as one of my patients.”

“Me, neither,” America said, finishing the last treatments to Earth’s injuries. “Larry, do you think you can keep Earth in your apartment’s spare bedroom?” he asked. “I’d like for him to stay here for observation.”

“Sure,” Larry said with a nod. “I can do that.”

“Good,” America said with a sigh, running his hand through his hair. “Man, what a crazy night. First, Ahk has a nightmare, then I find out that Earth is seriously injured. Can this night get any worse?”

“Don’t jinx it,” Ahkmenrah said, Larry carrying Earth to his apartment while explaining the situation to Kahmunrah. “It can get worse if my nightmare is indeed a prophecy.”

“Then let’s hope it’s not,” America said, looking very serious.

Chapter Text

Earth woke up in a strange bed, rubbing his head. The last thing he could remember was a group of young Earthlings attacking him in front of a museum after taking himself and the other planets to his surface for what was supposed to be a fun trip. Well, he and Uranus intended it to be a date, but the other planets wanted to tag along for various reasons. Earth got separated from the others and was about to call Uranus to see where they were when the leader of the gang that attacked him demanded his wallet. When Earth refused, they beat him up and took his wallet, anyway. He then passed out in front of the museum. And now, he’s here?

“Oh, good. You’re awake,” America said, walking in.

“America?” Earth asked, still confused. “What happened?”

“I just might ask you the same question,” America said, looking Earth over. “Whoever did this to you beat you up very badly, though. You’re lucky that I was able to treat you, here.”

“Wait, so you’re finally a doctor, now?” Earth asked. “And you didn’t tell me?”

“You didn;t tell me you and Uranus got engaged,” America said in return, pointing at Earth’s engagement ring. It was shaped in the shape of a heart, with a forest green gem, an ocean blue gem, and a sky blue gem. Three gems, symbolizing Uranus and Earth.

“Well, I was going to,” Earth said. “Uranus and I just needed to finish figuring out all the details of the wedding, first.”

“Well, life has been pretty busy for me, lately, so I’m not one to talk, I guess,” America said.

And you never told me our whole solar system is alive, Mirabel said. I had to look through your memories to figure THAT one out! America stayed silent, deciding to break the tablet and its magic to Earth as gently as possible.

“Where am I?” Earth then asked, looking around.

“You’re in a museum, or technically, in an apartment above a museum,” America explained, changing Earth’s bandages. “Seriously, how did you get beat up like that?”

“I was attacked by a group of Earthlings,” Earth explained. “They wanted my wallet, and beat me up when I wouldn’t give it to them.”

“It sounds like you were mugged,” America said. “I should call the police after I’m done looking you over.”

“But why would they do that?” Earth asked. “Why would they attack me like that?”

“I don’t know, but I guess they were only after your money, since they left you with your phone,” America said, looking at the aforementioned device on the nightstand next to Earth. Suddenly, it began to ring.

“I’m sorry, but Earth isn’t exactly available, right now,” America said. “Can I leave him a message?”

“Yeah; ask him where the bloody hell he is!” Uranus said on the other end, sounding very worried about his fiance.

“Well, he’s in an apartment above the Museum of Natural History, right now,” America explained. “He’s being treated after an attack.”

“Earth was attacked!?!?” Uranus asked, shocked. “Tell Earth to stay right where he is! I’m coming to get him!” Before America could say anything more, Uranus hung up.

“Let me guess; Uranus is coming over, right now?” Earth asked from the bed.

“Yeah; me and my big mouth,” America said, resisting the urge to facepalm at what he had said to Uranus. Then, the phone rang, again.

“I bet that that’s Luna, now,” Earth piped up. “Hand the phone to me.” America does as he says.

“WHERE ARE YOU?” Luna’s panicked voice comes from the other end. “I have been calling you for an hour, what happened to you?”

“Luna, luna” Earth starts trying to stay calm.

“I turned around and you were GONE” Luna huffs, “why do you do this Uranus freaked out!”

“Luna…luna, I’m ok” Earth winces, “well mostly …ow…look just stay with everyone else, stay near Sun let him know I’m ok. America found me so I’m fine”

“Ok…ok…” Luna huffs, “but how did you end up there?”

“I think I was mugged” Earth says, “I’m safe now just roughed up, I’ll call you later alright?”

“Well…as long as you’re ok” Luna mutters, “Sun’s not gonna be happy about this”

“When is he ever happy about anything?” Earth yawns, “You ok now Luna? Promise I’ll call you when I’m feeling better”

“Yeah ok, stay safe” Luna finally hangs up.

“Sorry about that” Earth says, “he gets so frantic”

“He’s worried about you” America says, “I’d be worried too if someone I was close to just sort of disappeared and then I find out they were hurt”

“Well thanks for the save” Earth says laying back, “you mind if I just sort of crash here for the rest of the night maybe part of the day?”

“No problem with me” America says, “but it’s not me you should thank it’s Larry he found you and carried you up here. He’s the night guard here, well he’s unofficially more than just that he’s sort of the protector of this place when you’re up to it I can give you a tour. This museum’s really special.”

“I’ll have to see it once I feel better” earth groans “everything feels bruised” he turns his head a bit, “wait what’s all that yelling?”

America heads down stairs and opens the apartment door to hear Kahmunrah yelling at someone who’s just barged in to the museum. “Stop calling me Sun, how do you even know my husband’s nickname for me? Who are you?”

“I'm Uranus,” Uranus said. He has teal hair, glasses, and wearing a teal hoodie with brown pants and white shoes. His eyes were also teal, a similar color to his celestial body.

“I think there’s a case of mistaken identity, here,” America said, stepping up.

“America?” Uranus asked. “What are you doing here?”

“It's a long story,” America said before explaining the tablet and what happens, every night.

“So…you're NOT the Sun?” Uranus asked.

“Of course not!” Kahmunrah said. “Though I suppose I understand the confusion.”

“Do you want to see Earth?” America asked.

“Obviously,” Uranus said, rolling his eyes. “He's the reason why I'm even here in this strange place in the first place!”

“Well, follow me,” America said, Uranus followed America. They walked up to Larry’s apartment and then the spare bedroom.

“Hey, Uranus,” Earth said, smiling.

“Earth, thank heavens you're safe!” Uranus said, smiling in relief. “And you will NOT believe what is happening, downstairs!”

“Really? What's happening?” Earth asked.

“Basically, the museum comes to life, every night. Like, literally,” America explained.

“I thought one of the residents here was Sun” Uranus says, “seriously it’s weird how much he looks like him and sounds like him and sorta acts like him…are you sure that guy is not a celestial body?”

“I’m sure” America says, “His name’s Kahmunrah he’s my brother-in-law”

“You got married?” Earth looks over at America in shock, “we really haven’t seen each other in a long time”

“I’ve been really busy” America explains, “especially the past three years but it’s good busy you know”

Uranus sits on the edge of the bed next to Earth, “How are you feeling?”

“Sore” Earth admits, “tired, a little shaken up but grateful I’m in one piece”

“He’ll be ok” America says, “he just needs rest, Dr Byrd and I checked him over nothing major is broken just some bruises and sprains, you should probably file a police report since it was a mugging”

“No” earth shakes his head, “it was just a bunch of teenagers they just wanted my wallet, some of them looks scruffy and hungry I bet they were one of those feral gangs I’ve heard about. I feel sorry for them more than anything else.”

“Well if you’re sure” America says, “you can stay here till you feel better”

Downstairs Frankie and Carter are talking while walking through the museum’s halls, “so the exam went well then?” Frankie asks

“Yeah all that worrying for nothing” Carter says with a chuckle, “of course that means I just have to get ready for the next thing,  research paper then another exam…”

“That’s like most of school” Frankie says, “well that’s like all of school”

“Yeah I guess…” Carter kicks at the floor, “hey I saw that woman that works at the Smithsonian, the one that can never remember your name”

“Mandy” Frankie says, “yeah what she say?”

“She’s running an expedition to egypt and she offered my a spot on her team” Carter leans on a nearby wall, “I haven’t decided if I want to do it yet”

“What did uncle Kah say when you told him about it?’ Frankie asks

“I haven’t told him” Carter looks a little guilty and slouches his shoulders, “or Larry you’re the first person I’ve told, I don’t know if I should go, I’d be gone for..a couple of years like at least four maybe longer”

“Right…” Frankie starts, “but you’ll never get this chance again” he says, “you should go I mean it’ll count toward your degree and you know you already know probably more than your professors anyway you can actually read and write hieroglyphs”

“But I’d be so far away, for so long” Carter says, “James has already left and Bethany is getting her internship at a law office soon, Jane is hardly ever here now that she’s got her internship at that fashion house and we barely ever see Nick anymore if I leave it’ll just be you and Eliza and she’s working on going to med school so then pretty soon it’ll just be you”

“What makes you think I won’t leave one day?” Frankie asks, “this play I’m in could take off you know I might end up on Broadway someday” he bumps shoulders with Carter, “we’re supposed to leave home, it doesn’t mean we can’t come back”

“I just” Carter rubs his neck, “I don’t want to upset dad…or Cleo god I can’t leave Cleo and you can’t leave Cleo she’ll have a melt down”

“Yeah I thought about that” Frankie looks down, “let’s be real though it’s not very likely I’ll make it all that big but your thing, come on Carter you’re really gonna pass up a chance to go to Egypt think of all the stories you could actually see where they happened. You could look up at the stars and they would be the same ones uncle Kah saw when he was younger, you could walk the same roads as him, what if you found the old palace?”

“I have to talk to dad about it first” Carter says letting his hand drop, “what do you think he’ll say”

“He’ll order you to go and give you a big long lecture about what an opportunity it is for you” Frankie folds his hands behind his back, “I’m kinda jealous you even get this chance”

“Well this makes up for when you got to go to the Smithsonian” Carter says pointing at Frankie, “we were all super jealous of that you know, I got stuck in the basement with James and you get to run off and meet a twenty foot tall Abram Lincoln and then ride on his shoulder, what the heck man…”

Frankie chuckles, “yeah guess that trip was pretty cool would have been better if Larry wasn’t in danger”

“No one outside of us will ever believe everything you’ve been through” Carter pats Frankie’s shoulder, “Or everything the rest of us have been through.” Carter gets a little quiet and watches as Frankie stops to help one of the animal exhibits get untangled from a rope that’s been used as a divider. Carter might be seen as a prince like he’s an heir to something here but that’s in name only. If anyone of the teens that’s been hiding out in the museum truly belongs there it’s Frankie. He’s been the protector of the tablet when Larry couldn’t be, he knows all the exhibits and even helped start up the night program again. Frankie’s the real prince, the true inheritor of the literal and figurative keys to the kingdom. “Hey, did you talk to uncle Ahk about helping you with some of those memories?”

“Huh?” Frankie picks up one of the smaller Gazelles and carries it over to the rest of the heard, “no he had a bad dream I didn’t want to bother him” he pats the Gazelle’s butt, “go on go” he looks back at Carter, “but Mark and Victor were your friends right? Can you tell me some stuff about them maybe it’ll jog something”

“We all went to a private boarding school together” Carter starts, “Victor was really into fencing and he was good, like really, really good he was training to go pro. Mark was a nice guy, he loved the outdoors he wanted to be a park ranger he could tell you if someone stepped on a leaf on a path give you the exact date and time”

“Hum” Frankie looks like he’s thinking, “then my combat skills must have come from Victor, and my tracking from Mark”

“Yeah, that does explain it,” Carter agreed.

“I have two very important pieces of your two closest friends inside of me, and I didn’t know it until now,” Frankie said. “I'm so sorry!”

“It's not your fault,” Carter said. “You didn’t ask to be made.” At that moment, they heard a scream. Frankie and Carter rushed forward to find a large group of people looking scared at Rexy.

“What is going on, here?!?!?” A man with long blond hair asked.

“I don't know!” A man with silver hair said.

“Will everyone please calm down?” Larry asked.

“We will once you tell us what is going on here!” A very tall man with reddish brown hair said.

“Okay, so, every night, this museum comes to life because of this magic tablet that my brother-in-law owns,” Larry explained.

“That…actually sounds pretty cool!” A man with dark blue hair and eyes said, blinking unusually.

“And dangerous,” the blond man said. “I thought that beast was going to eat us all!”

“Rexy?” Larry asked. “He's pretty much the museum’s pet dog. Just in dinosaur form. Watch.” Larry threw a bone, with Rexy immediately running to catch it.

“That is…very strange,” the man with reddish brown hair said.

“It is, but you'll get used to it,” Larry said.

“I'm Jupiter,” the man with reddish brown hair said.

“As in, the planet Jupiter?” Larry asked.

“Yes, that's exactly who I am,” Jupiter said. “That's Saturn,” Jupiter pointed to the blond man. “That's Neptune,” Jupiter pointed to the man with the dark blue hair and eyes. “And these are the other rocky planets, Mercury,” Jupiter pointed to a short man with short brown hair, “Venus,” Jupiter pointed to a man with light red hair with blond highlights, “and Mars,” Jupiter pointed to a man with dark red hair and tan skin, “and this guy is Earth's moon, Luna,” Jupiter pointed to the man with silver hair.

“Cool,” Larry said. “Is the Sun with you guys, too?”

“Yes, I am,” the Sun said, walking up. At once, Larry understood why Uranus confused Kahmunrah with the Sun, since they look so much alike. “We're looking for Earth.”

“Well, he's upstairs in my apartment, right now,” Larry said. “He's very hurt, and recovering, right now.”

“How bad is he hurt?” Luna asked.

“Not too bad, thankfully,” Larry said. “He just needs to rest, right now.”

“Well, if a certain moon was watching Earth like he was supposed to…” Venus grumbled.

“I turned my back for five minutes!” Luna said. “How was I supposed to know that he'd be hurt in that amount of time?”

“You are literally Earth's moon,” Venus said. “Meaning that you're supposed to be close to him at all times!”

“Okay, will we please not get into this?” Jupiter asked.

Wha-what’s happening Connor asks a little bewildered by the crowd, are these guys all planets? How?

“I have no idea Connor” Larry mutters, “ok look, hey….hey excuse me” the collected celestial bodies turned human all keep arguing over something and ignore Larry.

Frankie lets out a sharp whistle to get everyone’s attention and they all stop to turn toward the sound. “Excuse me but my uncle is trying to talk to you…you all did kind of barge into our home”

“And I am sorry for the intrusion” Sun states, “but with news of Earth being injured I didn’t want to risk anyone else…why are you staring” he looks over at Larry

“I’m sorry you just look so much like my husband” Larry apologies

Didn’t anyone ever tell you not to stare at the sun Connor snickers at his own bad joke but he does look like Kah. Did Kah say he was a descendant of Ra or whatever, that’s a sun God, maybe he wasn’t exaggerating.

Sun smiles, “well then you’re a lucky man, but you say Earth is alright”

“Well he’s resting” Larry says, “but the doctors that took a look at him seem to think he’ll fine, I can let him know you came here to look for him”

“There you see” Sun says to the group, “everything’s fine Venus you leave Earth’s moon-”

“Luna” the shorter man with silver hair corrects him.

“Right right” Sun says, “Luna I’m sorry, you leave Luna alone. Well pass that message along to Earth and let him know, to call me when he’s ready to come home”

“I’ll let him know” Larry says, Sun seems satisfied with this and urges the rest of the group out. “That was weird right?” Larry asks Carter and Frankie, “I mean my measurement for normal isn’t really reliable but that…that was weird”

“Larry you’re asking me what’s normal?” Frankie points at himself

“That guy looked just like dad” Carter says, “they could be twins now your nickname for him makes sense”

“Speaking of your dad” Frankie says looking at Carter, “you really should go talk to him about that thing”

“I donno if I’m ready yet” Carter says

“Thing what thing?” Larry asks

“A school thing,” Carter says, “it’s a pretty big deal but…it would take me away from home for a few years, I don’t know if I want to be gone that long”

“Well what’s the thing? Where would you be going?” Larry asks

“Egypt” Carter says, “Mandy Sanders is putting together an expedition team to do a dig in what used to be Memphis”

“Oh my god, Carter” Larry smiles, “that’s great! You’re going right? That’s Ahk and Kah’s old home”

“I’d be gone for so long I just feel guilty even considering it” Carter says, “I’d be abandoning everyone, don’t tell him yet I’m still thinking about it”

“I’ll let you talk to him but you know what he’ll say” Larry says, “and I’d agree this is a big opportunity you shouldn’t pass it up. Frankie can you hold down the fort while I go check on our guests up stairs?”

“Yep, you got it” Frankie gives a salute and winks, “oh hey the pipes in the hall of miniatures are still making that weird knocking sound you want me to look at them?”

“No I got it” Larry assures him, “Connor said he’ll fix them when we get to it”

“Thanks,” Frankie said with a nod. Larry nodded as he walked upstairs.

“So…what was all that arguing, downstairs?” Earth asked as soon as Larry walked in.

“Literally the entire solar system being worried about you,” Larry explained simply. “How are you feeling?”

“Everything hurts, but I think it's getting better,” Earth said. “I think the worst problem is my left ankle. I tried walking on it, but it hurt so bad, I fell down almost right after.”

“Because you’re pushing yourself too much too fast,” America said. “Let your body recover at its own pace.”

“Okay,” Earth says. “It just means that I'll be stuck here for a while.”

“And that you'll need crutches to move around until your ankle heals,” America added, showing Earth the crutches that he got for Earth.

“Thanks,” Earth said with a nod. “Does that mean I can go downstairs?”

“As long as you’re careful,” America said before turning to Uranus. “You think you can watch him?”

“Of course!” Uranus agreed.

“Good,” America said with a nod. “After you put your shirt back on, you can meet everyone,” he told Earth.

“Great,” Earth said with a smile.

Earth hobbled downstairs on his crutches with Uranus.

“Uh, hi, guys,” Earth said nervously.

“Hello, there,” Teddy said, feeling nervous about talking to his planet.

“So, uh, we noticed your tattoo,” Carter said.

“What tattoo?” Earth asked.

“The one on your right shoulder blade,” Carter said. “The one with your and Uranus's symbols intertwined with each other. Where and why did you even get that?”

“We both have them” Uranus says, “we got them when we got engaged”

“Oh wow” Frankie comments, “who’s your artist? Do they do cover up work?” Frankie rolls up one of his sleeves to show his old branding, “I need this covered up”

Earth and Uranus look at each other in shock, “I don’t uh think” Earth starts, “sorry I don’t know anyone that could remove that for you…your skin”

“Oh it’s supposed to look like this” Frankie says unfazed, “I’m composite, am I the first you’ve met?”

“We’ve heard about people like you but yes you’re the first we’ve met” Uranus says

“That’s kind of cool, do you want a tour?” Frankie offers, he thumbs over to Teddy, “this is Teddy he kinda adopted me”

Teddy smiles, “nice to meet you gentlemen,”

Larry nods to Carter who waves him off. With the two celestial bodies in good hands Larry goes off to check on the pipes when he passes by Ahkmenrah and Kahmunrah talking. Cleo is playing with her grandmother nearby.

“You had another dream?” Kahmunrah asks, “you haven’t had one of your prophetic dreams in eons”

“It was just a dream” Ahkmenrah says, “please brother don’t make a big deal out of this”

“Your dreams are a big deal” Kahmunrah objects, “you are forgetting you predicted a flood and saved a village with the first nightmare you had, now tell me what you saw”

“Red birds attacking an ancient king” Ahkmenrah says “they were vicious, I don’t know what it means…I couldn’t see the king’s face”

“Red birds” Kahmunrah folds his arms thinking, “like the red birds that attacked Jimmy? What did the crown look like?”

“I don’t remember,” Ahkmenrah shakes his head.

“Try” Kahmunrah half growls, “Ahk this is important you could save a life if you remember the smallest detail”

“I don’t remember Kah” Ahkmenrah snaps, “who did you go to for help with my nightmares before?”

“The ageless man on the council” Kahmunrah rubs his temples, “I can hardly ask for his help now”

“Is there no way you can find him?” Ahkmenrah asks.

“Ahk he is dead” Kahmunrah explains, and gestures around their exhibit, “after all we are all that’s left of ancient egypt”

“The ageless man…” Ahkmenrah blinks

“Was our old nation personified” Kahmunrah explains, “he told me one night when I was very…drunk it was not my finest moment” Kahmunrah sighs, “though I suspected for a long time”

“And all this time, I did not know…” Ahkmenrah said, concentrating on remembering what he could about the king in his dream.

“Well? Do you remember anything?” Kahmunrah asked.

“The crown…it’s just like yours!” Ahkmenrah said.

“I am the king in danger?” Kahmunrah asked. “Why?”

“I do not know,” Ahkmenrah said. “Did you see anyone strange, lately?” Now, it was Kahmunrah’s turn to try to remember.

“...No, not at all,” Kahmunrah said. “That is the most concerning.”

“Then we should stay aware at all times,” Ahkmenrah said. “Did you do anything to attract the Red Wings’ attention lately?”

“...I believe I recorded a video on YouTube with Carter to advertise the interactive Egyptian exhibit,” Kahmunrah said.

“That might be it,” Ahkmenrah said. “You making an advertisement with a well-known former AWOL must have grabbed their attention.”

“Then there’s the possibility, Carter is in danger as well, and Cleo” Kahmunrah looks back at his daughter, playing she’s none the wiser to any of this conversation. Inside these walls they should all be safe but simply locking them in isn’t the way to protect his family. The only way to truly be safe is to remove the threat, that may be the old warlord in him cropping up but as long as this last vestige of his enemy lives his family is in danger. “We may need to reach out for help with this” he half growls, “this threat is supposed to be dead, if this were the old days I would take care of it myself and be done with it”

“You know full well that would not have turned out any better” Ahkmenrah says half scolding his older brother. “There are other methods aside from violence, I would have thought you had learned this by now”

“I know that, diplomacy is your specialty” Kahmunrah says, “well do you think you can do something about this?”

“We’ll need to call on allies and tighten security here” Ahkmenrah says, “I don’t think the red wings are a group we can reason with”

“Dad, what are you and uncle Ahk whispering about?” Cleo latches on to his leg, “come play with me!” the little request and doe-eyed look is all it takes for the old warlord to melt away and Cleo pulls her father down to the floor to play with her.

Larry, is on a step ladder inspecting some pipes for the sprinkler system in the hall of miniatures, while the residents of the dioramas go about their normal routines. Bethany is the only one of the Agustus-smith trio here tonight and she’s just brought Jedediah and Octavius back, “Hey Gigantor whatcha doing all the way up there?” Jedediah calls from Bethany’s hands as she carries her parents in.

“We’ve been over this Jed, don’t call me that” Larry grumbles

Stop responding to it when he call you that Connor says, I don’t think it’s this pipe but man this needs to be cleaned. Also I think we’ve got a problem with hard water or something the pipes shouldn’t be this color around the joints might need a plumber out here

“Yeah don’t think this is the issue either” Larry looks down, “hey where did you guys say that knocking sound was coming from again?”

“Over here” Octatvius points to the wall between the westen and Roman dioramas, “above the bridge, Lucius and Book had said it started a few nights ago they are out here more than anyone else”

“I might have to go to the other side of the wall then” Larry sighs, “ok just keep everyone away from that spot  for now”

“Understood,” Octavius said, he and Jedediah walking off of Bethany's hand as soon as they reached the Roman diorama.

With Uranus and Earth, they were talking after getting to know everyone.

“I thought your Earthlings had gotten rid of this horrible unwinding business,” Uranus said.

“So did I, and at least they're starting to,” Earth said. “I mean, take those kids that beat me up. Yeah, what they did was wrong, but do they REALLY deserve to be taken apart for that?”

“I don't think so,” Uranus said. “In fact, I believe this unwinding is the reason why you've been reluctant to bring any of us to your surface as of late.”

“It is,” Earth confessed. “I just…I just didn't want any of you to see my Earthlings at their absolute worst, I guess.”

“I don't think I can blame you for that,” Uranus said, taking Earth’s hand in his. Earth sighed.

“Do you remember when you proposed to me?” Earth asked. “It was in Washington DC, right when we thought that unwinding was finally at an end.”

“I had asked you to marry me since I felt that it was finally the right time. How were we supposed to know that your Earthlings would start unwinding up, again?” Uranus asked.

“At least it looks like unwinding is ending for good, at least in America's land, anyway,” Earth said. “Although, we still need to plan the wedding.”

“You're right; I guess we've been so busy, we forgot,” Uranus said. “We didn't even talk about what kind of ceremony we'd like to have!”

“I was thinking about modern ceremony,” Earth said. “European/North American, with a reception to match.”

“Then I suppose you want us to get married in a church?” Uranus asked.

“Is that what you want?” Earth asked.

“Truth be told, I only want what will make the both of us happy,” Uranus said.

“Being with you will make me happy” Earth said.

The night draws to a close quickly and Kahmunrah has Cleoaptar sleeping in his arms when he meets up with Larry before everyone gets back to their spots, “Larry we need to talk about somethings tomorrow night” he says in a low whisper.

“Sure, is everything ok?” Larry asks.

“Ahkmenrah had one of his dreams…we’ll need to contact Merlin, possibly even some of Connor’s other friends” Kahmunrah hands Cleopatra over to Larry, “sleep well little one” he kisses her forehead. Cleopatra yawns and cuddles into Larry’s arms, “I just fear our family may be in danger again…”

“I’ll be careful” Larry kisses Kahmunrah’s cheek “you sleep well too”

The seriousness of the tone worries Larry but he tries not to show it, he heads upstairs and puts Cleopatra down in her bed then heads off to bed himself. Nick wakes him up when he shows up in the apartment kitchen and starts cooking. The smell of fresh coffee and Nick tapping on his door, “Hey dad”

“Nicky” He gets up and hugs him, “hey did you just get in?”

They sit at the table and spend time catching up, Nick has a new copy of ‘the hunter and the sun prince’ with notes sticking out of it. “So you know there’s a guy that wrote a musical about the Odyssey? Well he got ahold of me and he wants to work with me on a new musical based on this” Nick holds up the book, “Mandy and I kinda both own publishing rights and she’s good with it”

“A musical really?” Larry asks a little shocked, “you think anyone would want to see that?”

“Everyone loves a good love story and even more people love a tragedy” Nick says. “We even wrote a few songs, already.”

“You did?” Larry asked.

“Yeah; we already posted those songs to YouTube,” Nick said, pulling up a playlist on YouTube.

“The first one sounds great,” Larry said. “I guess it’s supposed to explain the setting?”

“And who you and Kha are,” Nick said.

“It sounds amazing,” Larry said. “What is it called?”

“Once Upon a Time in Ancient Egypt,” Nick said.

“Good title,” Larry said. “And what is the musical itself called?”

“The Sun Prince and the Hunter,” Nick said. “You and Kah even get a duet.” Nick then pulled up the song. It was the most beautiful love song Larry had ever heard.

“It’s so beautiful,” Larry said.

“Thanks,” Nick said. “We tried to convey your and Kahmunrah’s feelings for each other through that song.”

“What is it called?” Larry asked.

“You are all I need” Nick says, “there’s a reprise of it later on…I started working on this awhile ago with Frankie and Martty helping, it’s gonna be hard to find someone with the right range for some of these parts, but it’s not done yet it could take awhile”

“Just ask Frankie” Larry says, “He’s in a musical now I’m sure it’ll wrap up by the time you’re done writing”

“He finally landed a part?” Nick says, “that’s great”

“Papa” a little voice calls as Cleopatra sleepily trudges out of her bed, “yay Nick’s here!” she toddels over to Nick and reaches for him “Up?”

Nick chuckles and picks her up, “Hey baby sis, you’re getting big soon you’ll be too big to pick up”

“Nu-uh” Cleopatra objects softly, “I’m a little princess that’s what dad says”

“You’re gonna be a big princess soon” Nick sets her in her highchair, “you hungry? Yeah? I was making something to eat you want some”

Surprisingly Carter is the first one awake today, he nudges Frankie who’s sleeping next to him as per usual. Watching Frankie sleep in unnerving he sleeps like he’s dead the guy dosen’t even snore, “Hey Frankie, wake up” Carter whispers, “you’ve got rehearsal today”

“Hum?” Frankie opens one eye and mutters something, “uh hu five more minutes” in his soft raspy half asleep voice Carter can hear Victor, in the long yawn that comes right after he hears Mike. It’s depressing to think he’ll never see his friends again but when he thinks about them being part of Frankie it’s nice to think they still live on. Maybe they’re even the parts of him that inspired him to do what he knew to be the right thing in letting all those AWOLs go no matter the consequences. Yeah Mike and Victor would do that.

“Frankie, wake up,” Carter repeats. “You’ve got rehearsal, today.”

“...I do?” Frankie asked after a long groan. He looks at the calendar app on his phone. “I do!” Frankie said, bolting form the bed with a start and running upstairs and out the door. Carter smiles as Frankie rushes out before heading to his university. He needs to tell Mandy that he agrees to go to the expedition.

Chapter Text

Frankie rushed into the theater, panting. “Sorry I’m late!” Frankie said after he caught his breath.

“Actually, you’re right on time,” Jorge said. "get over to wardrobe and get changed”

Frankie has a greek style tunic shoved at him as the wardrobe coordinator starts getting everyone’s costumes passed out for fitting, Frankie ducks into a dressing room to change and comes back out in the tunic and blue cloak, “Heh can’t wear this home” he mutters with a chuckle “Octavius will complain I can hear it now ‘Franklin you look like a greek’” he imitates the Roman general’s voice while he laces up his sandals.

Jorge starts walking around with the wardrobe cordinator and the director giving notes on the costumes and make up for all the actors. “Mr Roosavelt let’s have a look, uh hu…looks good tell me can you grow a beard? Just a short one right around your jaw we can get a false one it’s just going to be hard to match your hair color we need you to look older”

“I think I can” Frankie says

“Good” Jorge smiles, “wait are your eyes two different colors, huh I just noticed, any way…yep this looks good fits perfect, now you!” he point at another actor and starts looking over his outfit, “nope to big we’ll have to take this in”

“Wow you do look the part” Mary Elizabeth comments from behind Frankie, he turns and sees her in her long greek style dress her hair pulled back, “I think you look better in that egyptian guard outfit I’ve seen you perform in but still”

“Oh uh thanks” Frankie says a little shyly, “oh I forgot I have a phone now I should give you my number…ah I think I left it in my hoodie” he starts to pat himself down and Mary Elizabeth grabs his arm then turns it to look at his branding.

“What’s this…oh…wow I uh forgot you’re…” Mary Elizabeth gets quiet.

Frankie gently takes his arm back, “Yeah I want to get covered up…you think Jorge would be ok with me wearing something to cover it. I know Vambraces started in the Roman army but artistic liberties right?”

“You were a tracker?” Mary Elizabeth asks

“Ye-yeah, I never turned anyone in” Frankie says, “if that’s the next thing you’re going to ask, I don’t like thinking and talking about my past a lot…”

“Right, right” Mary Elizabeth, “sorry I shouldn’t have grabbed”

“It’s ok -” Frankie starts when the director yells to get the attention of all the actors. Everyone is called to the stage for the first few songs and practice of choreography. Near the end of rehearsal someone from wardrobe hands him a set of bracers to go with the rest of his outfit, Frankie breathes a sigh or relief when he sees they cover his entire forearm.

“Here” Mary Elizabeth hand him a card before he goes the change, “My uncle’s a tattoo artist he specializes in cover ups if you call him and tell him I sent you he’ll give you a discount, call me later maybe I’ll go with you”

“Oh…um thanks” Frankie blushes a bit and once she walks away rushes to change back to his street clothes after seeing the time. “I’m about to be late!” Frankie said, hurriedly packing up his stuff.

“Late for what?” Mary Elizabeth asked. “Your job at the museum?”

“Yeah, that’s one way of putting it,” Frankie said. “See you at the next rehearsal!” At that, Frankie left. When Frankie arrived at the museum, he saw Larry. “Frankie! How was rehearsal?” Larry asked.

“Pretty good,” Frankie said. “I managed to get you and NIck free tickets to see me on stage.” Frankie hands Larry the tickets.

“Thanks,” Larry said, smiling in appreciation.

“So, did anything happen?” Frankie asked.

“Nope, you’re right on time,” Larry said just as the tablet’s magic activated.

“Franklin!” Teddy greeted warmly. “How was rehearsal, today?”

“It went great,” Frankie said.

“Wonderful!” Teddy said just as Kahmunrah walked up.

“Frankie, did you see anyone suspicious on the way here?” Kahmunrah asked.

“No, I didn’t,” Frankie said, shaking his head. “Why?”

“Because your uncle Ahk had a prophetic nightmare about me being attacked,” Kahmunrah asked.

“Really?” Frankie asked, horrified.

“Yes, which is why we are increasing security, here,” Kahmunrah said.

“Is that why you’ve been having me patrol the museum more often?” Frankie asked.

“Precisely,” Kahmunrah said. “ add the roof to your patrols enlist the help of some of the Jedi if you feel it's needed” Kahmunrah pats Frankie's shoulder “my most loyal general I'm relying on you to keep our home safe”

Frankie dips his head in a bow “of course uncle Kah”

“Good” Kahmunrah sighs out “ I have an idea to get us a little bit of extra help, I'll be working on that tonight, let me know the minute you see anything suspect,”

“He's really shaken up by this” Frankie says, walking away with Teddy.

“Yes. He takes Ahkmenrah's dreams very seriously” Teddy comments, “we shall all have to remain vigilant”

Frankie nods, “so uh…there’s this girl I met at rehearsal and I think she likes me”

Teddy grins, “oh really, tell me about her” he pulls Frankie into a side hug as they start off on a nightly patrol.

Cleopatra is trying to wiggle out of Larry’s arms as he’s setting her down after coming down from the apartment, “hold still bug!” he sets her down “ok you stay with your brother while I go fix the pipes”

“Yes papa” Cleopatra reaches up and takes Carter’s hand while Nick goes to help Larry. “Big brother, can we go find Frankie? I wanna hear the stories he told me about the other night?”

“What stories?” Carter asks

“The ones about the other gods” Cleopatra says, “how many other stories are there?”

“So many” Carter says, “we have to find dad first…I need to tell him something”

“Tell me what?” Kahmunrah asks as Carter looks up, “Is everything alright?”

“Well, yes,” Carter said. “But I'm going on an expedition with Ms. Sanders to Egypt for a few years.”

“Really?” Kahmunrah asked. “That is actually good news! But you must promise to write to us as soon as possible.”

“You're not upset?” Carter asked.

“Of course not!” Kahmunrah said. “You are leaving to learn about my old home, after all.”

“Thank you,” Carter said. “Thank you so much!”

“You are welcome, my dear boy,” Kahmunrah said. “Now, I must find your uncle. I must discuss something with him.”

“Did Uncle Ahk have one of his prophetic nightmares?” Carter asked.

“He did,” Kahmunrah confirmed. “One where I am going to be attacked by the Red Wings.”

“But why you?” Carter asked.

“I believe it's because of that advertisement I had filmed with you,” Kahmunrah said.

“So, it's all my fault?” Carter asked guiltily.

“Of course not,” Kahmunrah said. “If anything, it is the Red Wings’ fault.”

“So, what are we going to do?” Carter asked.

“Right now, we are increasing security,” Kahmunrah said.

“That sounds like a good idea,” Carter said. “But what if the Red Wings find a way around that?”

“I will figure something out,” Kahmunrah said. “I am a former warlord, after all.”

“Still…be careful, okay?” Carter asked.

“I will,” Kahmunrah said. “Thank you, Carter.”

Cleopatra, meanwhile, was playing with her dolls. “Someone wants to hurt you, Dad?” Cleopatra asked, looking up. “Is it the same man that hurt you, before?”

“No, they are different people,” Kahmunrah said.

“Why would someone want to hurt you?” Cleopatra asks, “you’re not gonna get hurt and sick are you?”

“No princess” Kahmunrah scoops Cleopatra up, “no one is going to hurt me or our family” he kisses her forehead, “now you don’t need to worry about that, I’m going to add to our guards and call on some allies to help us, you know we are safe here”

Cleopatra hugs Kahmunrah, “ok dad, I know” he sets her back down.

“That’s my girl you go play” Kahmunrah pats her head and pats Carter’s back before he turns to laeve, “so when are you leaving on your trip?”

“I don’t know yet” Carter says jamming his hands in his pockets, “Miss Sanders said she’s still working out details”

“We’ll have to have a going away party for you” Kahmunrah states, “it will be a good reason to celebrate, I imagine my old home has changed a great deal you’ll have to come back with your own stories”

Ahkmenrah walksup and has his arms full with a rolled up rug and small box of ink, bottles and assorted copper wire bits, “I found everything” he sets the box down, “are you sure this idea of yours will work?”

“Is that the rug from the kitchen upstairs?” Carter asks and looks confused at Ahkmenrah and Kahmunrah “dad what are you two doing with the rug?”

“Attempting to add to our guard ranks” Kahmunrah picks up the box, “Don’t make that face Carter I’m not doing anything unsavory, I’m using the rug so I don’t damage the floor, wouldn’t want to upset McPhee” Kahmunrah goes through the box, “hum…still going to need a small source of iron, ah it is a shame I don’t have any gold left…”

“Uncle Ahk…what is going on?” Carter asks

“Your father is trying out some arcane trick he is sure will work on a few of the miniatures” Ahkmenrah explains, “although the last time he tried it, it did not work”

Kahmunrah rolls his eyes, “you and Doc Brown are such naysayers, ‘this breaks the conservation of energy law Kah’ ‘you can’t change the molecular structure of an object without dire consequences’ blah blah blah, I checked my math”

“Uh hu and that’s what you said last time” Ahkmenrah nods, “those mice exploded…”

“Excuse me?” Carter asks

“Look, it’s going to be fine,” Kahmunrah says, waving off the concerned comments, “besides that mouse incident was back when I was still learning, I know what I’m doing now. You all act as if blood magic is difficult or something”

“Great Dad is going full on mad scientist” Carter mutters

“Can I help?” Cleopatra asks, not fully aware of what exactly is happening, “dad can you teach me the arc thingy you’re doing?”

Kahmunrah pats her, “when you are a little older my sweet”

“Aw…why do I have to wait for everything?” Cleopatra pouts “can’t I be big now?”

“You will be before you know it” Ahkmenrah tells her “don’t grow up too fast” he lays down the rug and unrolls it, “does Larry know you’re doing this?”

Kahmunrah hesitates, “I will….I will tell him later…stop glaring and help me mix this ink”

Larry and Nick spend most of the next few hours occupied with fixing the noisy pipes. Connor walks Larry through the fixing, the culprit seems to be an old water heater and after Nick and Larry adjust a few valves the noise stops.

See I told you we should have just checked the water heater Connor mutters as they start back to the hall of miniatures.

“Yeah, yeah you were right Connor” Larry mutters, “thanks for the help Nicky”

“Hey gotta take care of the homestead” Nick says with a chuckle, “you would think this would have been fixed with the upgrade we got a few years ago”

“I was more than a few years ago” Larry says, “funny how time flies right…feels like just yesterday I started working here now look at us…you’re all grown up and even the AWOLs we took in are going off on their own” Larry sighs, “pretty soon it’ll be just me and the exhibits again”

Nick smiles a little sad, “Dad…”

“No it’s ok” Larry pats Nick’s shoulder, “I’m just glad you’re doing so well, I’m excited about the musical, I can’t wait to see how it turns out- WHAT THE!” Larry yelps out when someone grabs him from behind and lifts him up with a cackling laugh.

“WHOOO!” A full human sized Jedediah spins Larry before setting him back down, “Hey Lorerdo! I been wantin to do that fer years!”

“JED!?” Larry blurts out

“Yeah” Jedediah pats Larry’s cheeks, “I’m taller than you”

“H-how?” Is all Larry manages to blurt out

Octavius clears his throat and he along with one of his field medic Valerius and the priest Lucius are standing in the hall behind them all full sized, “Kahmunrah and Ahkmenrah used some form magicks to alter our size, it only lasts till dawn, something involving a magic circle”

“The sheriff absolutely had to pounce ya” Mal, Jedediah’s second in command states, with Zoe, a woman who’s been known to be the best shot of anyone among the westerners, standing next to him. “Whatnned a force that could stopped him so we didn’t hope he didn’t rattle ya too bad”

“No way” Nick says, “you guys are full sized for the whole night? Only for one night?”

“Kahmunrah told us we could reuse the circle but its magic is limited to only a few of us at a time” Lucius says, “we’ve been asked to aid in guard patrols, and the thought was that we would be much more useful if were more human sized”

“That…is actually a good plan,” Larry said.

“Exactly,” Octavius said. “Together, we shall keep our home safe.”

“I sure hope so…” Larry said.

Chapter Text

Merlin is half asleep when Larry calls him, to tell him about the nightmare. Arthur joins him at the kitchen table in the North Carolina farm house when she can’t sleep. “Dad, why are you up at midnight?” she asks. Out of all of Merlin’s stolen children Arthur is the only one that looks like she could be his her natural blonde hair matches his bleached blond and her green eyes are the same as his one green that still has the pigment coloring.

“I’m talking to the night guard up in New York” Merlin says pulling away from the phone, “yeah Lar I hear you uh huh…well we haven’t seen any read wings …uh hum…and he’s all up in arms because of a dream are we sure your husband isn’t just over reacting?”

Arthur sees Merlin pull away from the phone when someone on the other end starts yelling. “Ok, ok woha” Merlin tries to talk over the yelling and Arthur just offers to take the phone. “You don’t wanna try handling Kahmunrah he’s intense Art”

Arthur snorts, “He’s a king I’m a king, we’ll meet each other on the same level” she smiles, “I got this dad” Arthur takes the phone, “to whom am I speaking?” she asks.

“Who is this?” the biting voice on the other end snaps, “put the wizard back on”

“No Kahmunrah you have yelled at my wizard now you are speaking to the King of new Camelot” Arthur states, “we are far overdue for this conversation I think, now what are you calling on us for?”

Merlin smiles as his oldest daughter, she’s grown into her name over the years and developed this ‘king’ persona that suits her so well. The persona works well when dealing with any difficult allies, few people defy a king.

“Kah stop yelling give me back the phone” Larry grumbles from the other end.

“No it’s alright” Arthur assures him, “we’ve been needing to talk, Pharaoh what is this about a dream?”

Kahmunrah huffs, “My brother had a prophetic dream about the red wings attacking me, there’s not much I can do aside from increasing security. In my old days I would mobilize an army an eliminate the red wings once and for all and I was under the impression that Proactive Citizenry was all but dead and defeated along with all their allies” there’s a pause in the ranting then a quieter “I thought my family was finally safe”

Arthur nods and sighs out, “I understand this could be upsetting for you, my knights and I have been doing our best to dig the last bits of Proactive Citizenry out of hiding, the red wings have been the most stubborn. We knew they had some remaining base of operations sate side but haven't been able to find them, your brother’s dream may have given us a lead”

“Finally! Someone taking this seriously” Kahmunrah says with exasperation.

“I had a theory that Lewis King was still harboring some PC agents” Arthur explains, “and he hasn’t been seen since he lost the election. I’ll be coming up to New York along with a few of my knights to see to this myself”

“Thank you, Ra’s mercy I should have just called you to start with” Kahmunrah says, “when can we expect you?”

“In a few days” Arthur says and looks at a calendar on the wall nearby, “if we set out tomorrow we can be there in two days. I’ll bring Gawin and Percival they’re getting bored here and Gawin is insufferable when he’s bored.”

“Excellent, you see Larry we just had to speak with the other monarch” Kahmunrah says before handing the phone back.

“Ok Kah, sorry about him” Larry apologies, “he’s been really rattled by this”

Arthur chuckles, “No need to be sorry I would be the same way in his shoes” she pauses, “how is Connor are you taking care of our lost brother?”

“He’s good” Larry says, “been working on fixing something here he’s been really helpful with that”

“He always was good with that” Arthur says, “let him know Risa’s here and doing well, I’ll see you both soon”

“Thanks Arthur” Larry hangs up.

Arthur hands the phone back to Merlin, “You handled that well and I don’t know why that shocks me” Merlin says, “so you are going up to New York really?”

“Why not?” Arthur says, “we haven’t had any other leads besides you and the rest of the old ADR have Avalon under control. I remember the old tales you would read us Arthur would leave with the knights all the time to go on quests”

“Uh hu and Arthur got in trouble on those quests” Merlin says, “be careful”

“I’m always careful” Arthur says, walking back to her room, “good night Dad” when she cracks open the door to her room and slips back into bed the other person in the bed rolls over and sits up. “Go back to sleep Risa” Arthur whispers

Eliza is helping out at America’s clinic going through appointments. Suddenly, Allison Hart barged in.

“YOU!!!!” Allison said as she saw America. “You are the reason why my husband and I lost custody of Daisy!”

“No, you and Mr. Hart were, for not vaccinating your daughter,” America said calmly.

“You and your vax cult,” Allison said. “Thanks to you, Daisy will now get autism because my stupid sister brought Daisy here to get vaccinated!”

“Actually, I vaccinated Daisy, myself,” America said, “and in the checkups after, she has zero signs of autism.”

“You’re lying!” Allison growled out.

“It’s the truth,” Eliza said. “Now, please leave or I’m calling the cops.” Just as Eliza said that, Holly Hart walked in with Daisy for another checkup.

“Allison?” Holly asked.

“Holly!” Allison said. “How DARE you vaccinate Daisy!”

“You and Andy were horrible parents for refusing to vaccinate Daisy,” Holly said simply. “Now, if you excuse me, Daisy has another checkup.”

“No, she doesn’t,” Allison said, “because Daisy’s coming with me!”

“If you so much as try to kidnap Daisy, I’ll call the cops,” Holly growled out.

“You won’t have to; I’ll be the one calling the cops,” America said before calling the nonemergency police line. Allison then tried to grab Daisy, only to be stopped by Eliza.

“Mom stop it!” Daisy yells, “I wanted the shots, don't I get a say in what happens to me?”

Allison and Holly both stop the turn looking at the young girl standing her ground.

“You’re too young-” Allison starts.

“Too young to care about my own body?” Daisy asks “I know I’m just five but I know I’m in charge of myself and you told me that I’m allowed to say ‘no’ when someone grabs me and that I’m supposed to be a big girl and eat my vegetables and take care of myself and that’s what I’m doing” She reaches over and grabs her aunt’s hand, “I wanna go home with you and dad but I wanna take care of myself, mom I’ll come home when YOU can be a big girl” Daisy looks up at her aunt, “Aunt Holly can we go get chicken after my check up?”

“Sure kiddo” Holly says a little dumbfounded.

Eliza ends up escorting a stunned Allison out to the lobby where Carter and Frankie are waiting. Allison yeps and shys away from Frankie who just rolls his eyes, he’s used to the reaction. Allison Heart surprisingly puts up no argument when a beat cop shows up to talk to her and lead her outside.

“Looks like we missed some excitement” Carter comments when Eliza come back in.

“Ugh not really” Eliza shakes her head, “Just this family Dad’s been dealing with for a while now it’s a whole mess, what are you guys doing here?”

“My Egypt trip is in a few weeks” Carter holds up a folder with a bunch of paperwork, “I have to get a physical and a couple of shots before I go”

“I’m here for moral support” Frankie adds

“But you hate doctor’s offices” Eliza says to Frankie

“Fine immersion therapy then” Frankie says “plus I’m bored”

“And he’s avoiding calling his girlfriend” Carter teases

“She- she’s not” Frankie huffs, “It’s not like that! Beside Uncle Kah and uncle Ahk want me to keep a closer eye on you guys”

Eliza leans over “girlfriend?” she asks with a grin, “oh no does Cleo know that someone might be steeling her guard away?”

“Guys it is not like that” Frankie objects “Mary Elizabeth is just…I mean we’re just talking we’re in the musical together”

“Uh hu and who’s she playing?” Eliza asks

“Penelope” Frankie says, “you know Odysseus wife”

“Oh but nothing go on there noooo” Carter teases

“Uh hu nothing at all” Eliza adds in

“Ugh I’m tell your dads about this” Frankie says blushing

Holly and Dasiy walk out of America’s office, “Thank you again for all this and I’m sorry for the scene before” Holly says

“Hey you’re doing your best to protect your niece” America says and kneels down to Daisy “and you miss are a very brave and smart girl I want you to know that”

“Thank you Mr America” Daisy says with a grin

“Not a problem,” America said. “Now, come on, Carter. Let's get you that physical and those shots.” At that, America led Carter into his office. A short while later, Carter left.

“Thanks, America,” Carter called out.

“Happy to help,” America said with a smile.

Later, America was closing his clinic for the day.

“What a day, huh?” Eliza asked.

“I'll say,” America said. “Why do I always get the crazies?”

“I don't know,” Eliza said. “Maybe you're just a magnet for crazy people.”

“Ha ha,” America said sarcastically, locking the clinic doors. “Let's just get back to the museum. As soon as they walked inside the museum, there was something strange going on.

“What's going on, here?” America asked.

“The Red Wings tried to kill me!” Kahmunrah said, holding his bleeding shoulder.

“Really?!?!” America asked, shocked.

“They came shot Kah in the shoulder,” Larry said, a worried expression on his face.

“Did you get whoever attacked Uncle Kahmunrah?” Eliza asked.

Kahmunrah nodded. “He's in the basement,” he said. “He is being interrogated as we speak.”

“Did he say anything, so far?” America asked.

“No yet “ Larry is trying to help stop some of the bleeding, “please can you help with this?”

“He was so brazen how did he get in here?” Kahmunrah grumbles.

“ Eliza go grab Dr Byrd, Kah can you walk?” America asks starting to lead him up to the apartment.

“I am fine” Kahmunrah winces “other than the metal lodged in my shoulder” Larry and America get Kahmunrah up to the apartment. Carter is trying to comfort Cleopatra in her room, she’s crying and understandably scared.

America starts cleaning up the shoulder, Eliza and Dr Byrd come in to help. Dr Bryd looks at the wound and over at Larry, “Tell Carter to take Cleo down, stars and It might be best if you leave the room for this next part too the bullet is still lodged in there and I don’t have any strong pain killers” he looks over at Kahmunrah, “This is going to hurt”

“Larry take the children downstairs,” Kahmunrah says quickly.

Larry senses the panic in the statement and gives Kahmunrah a quick kiss. He goes to get Carter and Cleopatra, “hey come on let’s go find your grandma” Larry says taking Cleopatra from Carter.

“Is-is dad ok?” Cleopatra whimpers cuddling in Larry’s arms. “Papa…I’m scared”

“Oh baby, he’s…gonna be ok” Larry says trying to keep her calm, “come on your Grandma and your uncle are going to watch you”

“Larry…” Carter looks up at him worriedly, “How bad is it?”

“Um…” Larry hesitates “we’ll find out after the doctors fix him up”

Shepseheret is waiting nervously and insatanly scops Cleopatra up from Larry. Carter looks around, “wait where’s uncle Ahk and Frankie?” Carter asks

“Questioning the attacker” Shepseheret says “Come on little one let’s go play with the animals”

Frankie is being maybe a little rougher than needed with the attacker shoving the man against the wall and loudly demanding answers. “Where’s the rest of your group! Who else are they going after! Tell me!”

The red wing laughs, “like I’d tell you you failed science experiment”

“You!” Frankie roars and pulls back ready to punch Ahkmenrah grabs Frankie’s wrist.

“Franklin…take a walk” Ahkmerah says and lets go of his wrist “take a walk, cool down” he nods.

Frankie lets go of the red wing and walks off with a growl.

The red wing drops to the ground and coughs, “that’s right leash your dog…” he grins, “don’t know how you managed to get one of the bloodhounds but you got one of the blood thirsty ones, he’s got teeth”

“He’s not a dog” Ahkmenrah states, “we do have a dog here well he is dog like just much larger and with more teeth if you cooperate you won’t have to meet him”

“Uh hu I guess that’s a threat?” The red wing asks

“Yes but not an empty one” Ahkmenrah says, “you are familiar with what a T-Rex is?”

The red wing looks a little nervous, unable to tell if Ahkmenrah is bluffing, “Fine what do you want to know?”

“Quite a few things, actually,” Ahkmenrah said, beginning the interrogation.

Chapter Text

Kahmunrah woke up the following evening with a sore shoulder. Then he realized that he’s in Larry’s apartment.

“Ah, yes, I was shot in the shoulder the previous evening,” Kahmunrah remembered.

“Yeah, you were,” Larry said as he walked in. “Good evening.”

“Good evening,” Kahmunrah said as Larry briefly kissed him. “How is everyone?”

“Worried about you,” Larry said. “I had to reassure everyone countless times that you’re alright.”

“ I am now that you are here” Kahmunrah reaches for Larry but hisses in pain when he leans forward.

“Easy” Larry sits on them edge of the bed and helps Kahmunrah ease back into the pillows, “don't move around too much, America told me you passed out after Dr Byrd took the bullet out of your shoulder, he was kinda impressed you didn't scream”

“Of course not,” Kahmunrah says “I have a high pain tolerance”

“ Uh hu big bad warlord” Larry leans over and kisses Kahmunrah, “you still need to rest you're staying in bed”

“What's happened to the red wing?” Kahmunrah asks.

“Ahk and Frankie integrated him last night” Larry says “he folded after Ahk threatened to sick Rexy on him. We're waiting on Aurthur and her knights to show up,”

“Good i wish to speak with her when she gets here” Kahmunrah says

“Did you not hear the part where I said 'you're staying in bed’ and ‘'don't move too much’” Larry grumbles “see this is the communications thing we need to work on”

“I don't need to leave the bed to speak with her,” Kahmunrah objects “and I heard your concerns and I appreciate them but I am still required to fulfill my duties”

“Ahk can handle it” Larry says “Cleo and Carter are really worried about you. Stop obsessing over your kingdom when your family needs you”

Kahmunrah blinks and looks at Larry with a bit of shock, “I - alright you're right I need to rest so all of you won't worry”

“Thank you” Larry sighs out “the kids want to see you think you’re up to that?”

Kahmunrah nods, “yes, bring them in” he readjusts the sling his arm has been put in to keep the shoulder still.

Cleopatra has to be held back by Larry to keep her from pouncing Kahmunrah, “DAD!” she yells out half crying, “Dad are you ok? Dad you were sleeping so long. Mr America said your shoulder is messy”

“Messed up” Carter corrects her, “He said it was messed up…we’re just glad you’re ok”

Cleopatra cuddles up to Kahmunrah careful not to touch his shoulder. “I will be fine” Kahmunrah says, “I just need rest, maybe you two can look after me”

“That’s the plan” Carter says, “we’ve got him Larry you can go check on downstairs”

“Right, come get me if you guys need me” Larry heads down and hears a knock at the front doors when he opens them he sees a trio of bikers waiting, “King Arthur I presume?” Larry asks stepping aside to let them in.

“And I recognize that voice” Arthur says with a grin taking off her helmet, “Larry the night guard? So do we have permission to come in, I have a meeting with one of your pharaohs” she leads the other two bikers in who each take off their helmets one a umber man with short dreadlocks and a shave on one side of his head the other a young man that’s clearly part chance folk (though Larry couldn’t tell what specific tribe) with long black hair that tumbles out past his shoulders when he takes his helmet off. “These are my knights and brothers” She points to the umber man, “Percival” and then to the man with the longer black hair “and Gawin”

“I just go by Percy” Percival says with a soft baritone voice, “Dad’s told us about this place so you can skip the standard explanation and promise we won’t freak out about the exhibits”

“Still kind of cool” Gawin says with a mischievous grin, “what a great place to hide AWOLs no one would ever think to look here” He comes face to face with Rexy first and instead of freaking out like everyone else has on first sight, “Oh so cool hey buddy!”

“Gawin focus” Arthur says with a laugh, “sorry about him”

“King Arthur” Ahkemenrah asks walking up with Frankie acting as a guard doing his best to look intimidating, “I am sorry my brother can’t speak with you tonight he was attacked”

“I sorry we were a little late it seems” Arthur says, “is it bad?”

“He has had worse” Ahkmenrah says, “we managed to subdue the attacker and get some information out of him”

“Good, tell me everything you can” Arthur says walking with Ahkmenrah.

Perecivel turns to a refection of Larry and Connor, “ah there he is…hello Connor”

Hey Percy Connor sighs, man it’s good to see them, it’s good to see the Pendragon sibling getting older

“He says it’s good to see you” Larry relays “He’s shared some memories of you guys with me…I feel like I know you now”

“It’s good to know Connor is being taken care of here..” Percival looks a little sad, “even if it means we’ve lost him, guess he’s a Daley now and not a Pendragon”

Ahkmenrah leads Arthur down to the basement where the red wing is being held and watched by the full sized Octavius and Jedediah. “Security in this place is no joke” Arthur comments, “Right so, sing red bird”

“YOU’RE Arthur!?” The red wing man asks, “but you’re a woman!”

“Yeah yeah I know” Arthur grumbles, “look the Pharaoh has already told me where your group is hiding and everything you’ve spilled you can make this easy or I can ask one of these two to rough you up a bit” she points at Jedediah “he looks feral maybe him”

Jedediah grins his signature terrible smirk, Octavius sighs “please do not encourage him”

“Fine” The red wing grumbles, “it’s like I told the mummy, the rest of my squad is holding up at Lewis King’s lake house The idea behind the attack was to draw Carter out and then you and Merlin. The idea was to take him down to scatter the composite units and the rest of the ADR since he’s the one running things according to our intel” He grunts, “that’s everything you going to throw me to the bloodhound to tear up now?” he gestures to Frankie standing behind Ahkmenrah

“Stop. Calling. Him. A. Dog” Ahkmenrah growls, “He’s more human than you will ever be”

“He’s manufactured!’ the red wing snaps, “you can pretend all you want but there were 43 others made just like him he’s not quirky and unique he’s a weapon you’re pretending a gun has a personality-”

Jedediah lunges at the red wing only to be held back by Octavaius and to everyone’s shock it’s Ahkmenrah that slaps the man. “You will not refer to one of my royal guards that way” Ahkmenrah says all too calmly.

“Well I’ve got enough to go on” Arthur says, “hold this loser here a little longer for me?”

“Of course,” Ahkmenrah said. “Do you have any idea on what to do with him?”

“I have a few ideas for him, and his red wings buddies,” Arthur said. “In the meantime, try to keep him here for as long as possible.”

“Certainly,” Ahkmenrah said with a nod. As the Pendragons went upstairs, they saw Cleopatra sitting down, looking worried.

“Hey, kiddo,” Gawin said. “You worried about your dad?” Cleopatra nodded glumly.

“I don't blame you, what happened to him was scary,” Percy said.

“Dr. Byrd and Dr. America said that Dad will have to rest for a little while,” Cleopatra said. “He looked like he’s in so much pain.”

“He is, from what I heard,” Arthur said. “Just hang in there, okay?”

“Okay,” Cleopatra said with a small smile.

“So, how did it go?” Larry asked, walking up.

“We know where the other Red Wings are, now,” Arthur said.

“And what are you going to do with them, exactly?” Larry asked.

“Expose them” Arthur says, “they are an illegal paramilitary group, well more illegal than us and if Lewis King has been hiding them that’s the final nail in his coffin, metaphorically speaking. I would rather we not have to come down to a fight but if it does we’re ready for that”

“With just the three of you?” Larry asks, “little brazen…”

“You haven’t seen me in a fight” Arthur produces a scalpel from her back pocket, “Winning a fight is about tactics not numbers. I’m a surgeon I know what to cut and make it hurt”

“So a raid and throwing them at what the local police?” Larry asks

“No Mr Daley the FBI” Arthur puts the scalpel away, “now that we don’t have to fight the law we can use it to our advantage”

“Plus it helps that our dad is dating the president…” Gwain says but quickly covers it with, “Oh but that’s not official and you did not hear me say that”

“You really try to live up to your name hu?” Larry asks Arthur

“Just ask Connor to share a few memories he has of us” Arthur chuckles “and speaking of Connor…I do have something to tell him, Risa wanted to tell you this sooner but I feel like I should let you know something”

Hu Risa? What would Risa want to tell me that she just can’t call and say on her own and what would it have to do with Art, Connor starts and nudges Larry for control then takes over “What’s going on with Risa?” he asks.

“Oh so you can hear me…good” Arthur says, “I wanted to let you know she and I are seeing each other”

“Hu” is all Connor can get out to start, “Didn’t think Risa was into other girls…take good care of her. She could do alot worse”

“I will,” Arthur promised. “Take care.” At that, the three left.

Risa dating Arthur, Connor said. At least she picked someone good.

“Yeah; I can tell Arthur’s a good woman,” Larry said. “I’m going to check on everyone else.”

Might as well check on the pipes, too, Connor said. Last thing we want is for a flood to happen.

“You’re right,” Larry said as he walked to the Hall of Miniatures.

Meanwhile, Cleopatra was playing while Shepseheret watched.

“Why did that man hurt Dad?” Cleopatra asked.

“Because he is very evil,” Shepseheret said.

“Oh,” Cleopatra said. “Is he going to be punished?”

“Yes, he is,” Shepseheret said. “Do not worry, young one.”

“Good,” Cleopatra said. “May I please go see Dad, now?”

“We should see if he is able to have visitors, first,” Shepseheret said with a gentle smile. “But I do not see why not.”

Chapter Text

Macy gently held Nick's hand as her boyfriend worried about Kahmunrah.

“I'm sure your stepfather will be fine,” Macy said. “From what you told me, he's a very strong man.”

“But he got shot in the shoulder,” Nick said. “That has to be painful.”

“Better the shoulder than the chest or head,” Larry said, walking up.

“Dad, how's Kah?” Nick asked.

“He's doing better, from what Dr. Byrd and America told me,” Larry said. “His arm will have to be in a sling for a while, though.”

“You see? I told you your stepdad will be fine,” Macy said.”Dad’s been shot a few times and he bounced back”

“Wait uncle Brain’s been shot before?” Nicky asks, “like with a gun shot not a wand, it’s kinda different"

“He never told me- never mind there’s a lot we need to catch up on…” Larry sighs, “we heard anything from Arthur, I’m kinda a little worried she’s just going in with three people to take on a bunch of these redwings” Arthur had assured Larry that she had a plan and the whole raid would be fine but…

Art knows what she’s doing Connor says, worry about Kah getting better

“I can help if you want” Macy offers, “I know my healing magic is not that great…”

“He’ll be fine Macy but thank you” Larry says.

“Lawrance” Teddy calls from the main guard desk. “I think you’ll want to see this” a newscast plays of a an FBI raid on some lake house, former governor King is being led away in handcuffs a string of men in military grade armor all being led off also in cuffs.

“Well, at least there's some good news,” Larry said with a sigh.

“That is comforting, at least,” Teddy said.

“So…they caught former Governor King?” Nick asked, walking up to see for himself.

“Yeah, they did,” Larry said. “Looks like he'll finally face justice for what he did.”

And not a moment sooner, Connor said. Especially after everything he's done.

“Agreed,” Larry said. “I'm going to check on everyone. Do you think you guys can look after Kah until I get back?”

“Of course,” Nick said.

“I know a few recipes that Grandma taught me,” Macy said. “Maybe I'll fix Pharaoh Kahmunrah something.”

“Good,” Larry said with a nod before making his rounds. Macy and Nick went upstairs to check on Kahmunrah.

“Good evening, Nick,” Kahmunrah greeted. “And you are Nick’s lover…Macy, right?”

“Yes, I am,” Macy said. “How are you feeling?”

“Still rather sore,” Kahmunrah said, wincing as he tried to move his injured shoulder.

“Well, don't move that shoulder too much,” Nick said.

“Exactly,” Macy said. “You might make it worse!”

“Very well,” Kahmunrah said with a huff.

“So, do you want anything to eat?” Macy asked. “I'm not as talented a cook as my grandma, but I'm still pretty good.”

“Macy, you're just as talented a cook as your grandma,” Nick said. “Remember those cookies you made for me right after we got together?”

“You mean the peanut butter ones?” Macy asks, “baking and cooking are not the same thing Nicky” she teases, “but I can still make something”

“I’m fine dear” Kahmunrah says gently cradling his arm as he moved to get more comfortable in bed, “she seems nice Nick” he comments once Macy leaves to find something in the kitchen.

“Yeah…” Nick smiles and looks down, “I didn’t know how dad was gonna feel about us seeing each other and maybe a professional model is a little out of my league but, you know Macy’s sweet”

“Why would a model be ‘out of your league’?” Kahmanrah huffs, “you are technically a prince, she’s much more refined than some of her other relatives”

Nick chuckles, “nice to know you approve I guess”

“Speaking of which…” Larry said as he walked upstairs, “what did your mother say when she met Macy?”

“Well…she and Don were kind of surprised that I was even dating Macy,” Nick said.

“Because she is a model, or a mage?” Kahmunrah asked.

“I guess both,” Nick said. “Mom tried to be nice to her, but…but I guess she saw a bit too much of Uncle Brian in her.”

“So, she doesn’t approve of you dating Macy?” Larry asked.

“Unfortunately not,” Nick said with a sigh.

“Well, she has the approval of myself and your father,” Kahmunrah said. “I daresay that's more than enough.”

“Thanks, Kah,” Nick said as Macy came back carrying a bowl of soup.

“We're you talking about that nightmare of a dinner we had with your mom and her husband?” Macy asked Nick as she handed the chicken soup to Kahmunrah.

“Nightmare would be an understatement,” Nick said with a slight groan.

“Really?” Larry asked. “How bad was it?”

“Very bad,” Nick said. “Apparently, Mom recognized right away that Macy is Uncle Brian's daughter, and almost didn't even let her in!”

“I didn’t realize that Nick’s mom even hated me that much,” Macy said. “Or Dad, for that matter.”

“Yeah…Erica didn't want me to have anything to do with magic when I was married to her,” Larry said, shaking his head. “I had to fight just for Nick to go to Ilvermorny.”

“There must be some reasonable explanation for all that” Kahmunrah says, “But even so, I have no issue with your friend any of his family”

“Yhea now that you’re not threatening him” Larry says, “I think Erica was just scared of all the magic stuff and Brain was kinda wild when we were younger I mean” Larry chuckles, “At some point I’ve gotta tell you guys the story about when we got into a really dangerous game of truth or dare there may or may not have been a slightly drunk unicorn that made a bunch of horse mounted police officers chase him through central park….to be fair I didn’t think he would do it”

“Oh my god” Macy shakes her head, “I know that story dad was all over the internet for weeks…”

“Hu seems you and Connor are both connected to dare devil mages” Kahmunrah teases Larry.

“Dr.Merlin Pendragon doesn't count he’s not really a wizard he just took the name for a cover story” Larry says, “at least I think he’s nomaj? Connor?”

I donno I never asked, I’m pretty sure he’s just a really good doctor Connor says, He’s nuts but you know you’ve met some of the Pendragon siblings

“Yeah, I did,” Larry said.

But in all seriousness, maybe it’s best that you and your ex-wife split, Connor said. At least Kah embraces all parts of you.

“Yeah, he does, doesn't he?” Larry said.

“Who does what?” Nick asked.

“Oh; Connor mentioned how Kah embraces all parts of me,” Larry said.

“And of course I would!” Kahmunrah said with a wide grin. “I love every part of you.”

“And I love you, too,” Larry said with a gentle smile.

“So, what's kept you busy?” Nick asked.

“There's this new Incan exhibit,” Larry said. “There's a few mummies here, now.”

“Really?” Kahmunrah asked.

“Yeah; one of them is even an emperor,” Larry said. “Ahk's talking with him, right now.

“I should remember to speak with him, as well,” Kahmunrah said.

“He's a little….” Larry fumbles for the most polite way to describe the new addition, “he's enthusiastic”

“Uh hu….how enthusiastic?” Kahmunrah asks

“Ahk can handle him…I think” Larry says, “well you know Frankie is down there with him it’ll be fine”

Ahkmenrah and Frankie was ‘dealing’ with the newest exhibit an overly excited Incan emperor, that seems relatively young maybe even younger that Ahkemnrah was when he passed. The young emperor sort of bounces around to the various exhibits a woman about the same age as him trails behind him. An Older looking and board built man keeps trying to pull the young emperor away from anything dangerous.

“Kuzco! Don’t touch that, that’s sharp” The broad built man yanks him away from a sword display, and sighs, “Come on we just got here…”

Frankie chuckles, “Your guard has his work cut of for him hu Miss Malina?” Frankie says to the young woman.

“You think it’s bad now, wait till Yzma finds her way out of that storage crate,” Malina comments

“Should we be worried about her?” Ahkmenrah asks, “I'd rather we not have someone that’s sort of a power hungry tyrant going around unchecked…might bring up some bad habits from Kah’s past…”

“What no…I don’t think Yzma will be that bad” Malina hesitates, “maybe”

“I think she will,” Pacha said. “I speak from experience.”

“Well, I'll have Larry or Nick have her locked up, just to be safe,” Ahkmenrah said.

“That is a relief to hear,” Kuzco said.

“So, how about a tour?” Frankie asked.

“Sure thing! I'd like to look around at my new home,” Kuzco said, following Ahkmenrah and Frankie.

Chapter 12

Chapter Text

Erica really hadn’t had much interaction with her ex husband after their son turned 18. There wasn’t much reason to talk, Nicky was grown up and they didn’t really need to co-parent any more, he was even doing well with a carrier but the girl…

When Nick told her he was dating a model Erica and Don were both impressed. Erica less so when she saw the signature blonde hair and blue eyes along with the last name Stanza. That man that wild and dangerous man that had been her ex’s best friend he had a daughter and Nick was dating her! When Erica first met Larry back when they were young adults she thought she could just sort of look past the whole wizard thing but it opened up such a dangerous and frightening world and she couldn’t even keep Nick out of it. She tried to drag Larry into something real and stable and out of that odd fantasy world but he never found his footing. Part of Erica blamed herself, still the only way to make it right was to not let Nicky fall the same way. So it starts with a phone call, “Larry hey it’s been awhile…”

“Erica? Oh hey!” Larry sounds happy on the other end of the phone, “Yhea I guess it has, how’s it going with you and Don?”

“Everything’s good” Erica nods, it’s the truth it’s a nice stable boring life like she’s always wanted, “He listen I’m worried about Nick…”

“Yeah? He told me you didn’t react well to seeing Macy” Larry says, “Listen can we talk about this in person? I think we need to sit and really talk”

“That’s a good idea, maybe a coffee shop” Erica suggests

“I have a better Idea,” Larry offers, “why don’t you meet me at the museum”

“The museum?” Erica asked. “As in, your job?”

“Technically, yes, but I live in this apartment above it,” Larry said. “Didn't Nicky tell you?”

“No,” Erica said, drumming her fingers on the kitchen counter, “he doesn't tell me much of anything, anymore. He didn’t even tell me about your accident until after I saw you on TV!”

“Oh, yeah, the whole ad thing I was in with Proactive Citizenry,” Larry said. “I pretty much got out of that a while ago.”

“Yeah…I suppose I'll see you later?” Erica asked.

“Sure,” Larry said. “See you later. I'll even make us some coffee; introduce you to my husband, even.”

“You're married, too?” Erica asked.

“Yeah, I am,” Larry said. “He might seem gruff, cranky, and commanding, but he's very protective and sweet. He's a good guy, once you get to know him.”

“I suppose I'll have to see that for myself,” Erica said. “See you later.”

“Yeah, see you later,” Larry said before hanging up.

And that was how Erica found herself in her current situation: with a T-Rex skeleton sniffing her. “Oh. oh my god…”

“Rexy down” Larry says sternly and tosses a tough rubber dog toy up for the t-rex to catch, “Don’t worry about him Rexy’s just the ‘guard dog’ come on I’ll show you upstairs before this place gets really crazy” Larry launches into the explanation of what has happened every night for the past few years. He seems happy, upbeat, Larry was not at all like this when they were together.

The apartment on the upper floor is small but clean and well kept, “You live here? Where you work?” Erica asks looking around, "doesn't that get a little tiring?”

“No way” Larry pours her a cup of coffee, “I love this place” all around the apartment are photos of Larry and Nicky with his new family. A stern looking man in a fine suit next to Larry in his old dark blue dress suit another picture of Nick and a boy Erica is sure she’s seen on the news before, “Is this Carter King?” a little girl stands between the two of them.

“Yep that’s my step son” Larry says, “I mean I guess he could change his last name if he wanted and that’s my daughter Cleo”

“Daughter?” Erica looks shocked, “You remarried and you have a daughter?”

“Yeah, she was storked a few years back,” Larry said. “Kah and I have been raising her ever since.”

“Kah?” Erica asked.

“Yeah,” Larry said. “My husband, Kahmunrah.” Erica looked at the picture that were all over the living room. “The same stern man was not only in a suit in some pictures, but in what looked like an ancient Egyptian royal outfit in others. One picture had Larry and the man under a mistletoe in what looked like a Christmas party, Larry kissing the man, who had a loving and confused expression on his face. Another picture showed Nick playing chess with the man. Yet another showed Larry and the man on the couch watching a movie, with Larry cuddling the man as they watch together. There were pictures that showed how much Nick has grown. One picture was apparently of a graduation party, with Nick, his new siblings, Larry, and the man all together with Nick still wearing his cap and gown. And then there’s pictures of the girl that Larry and his husband took in as their daughter. Baby pictures, birthday pictures, and photos of other special events.

“It looks like you really put your life together,” Erica said.

“Yeah,” Larry said. “My husband and brother-in-law think that fate and destiny brought me here,” Larry said. “And I can’t “help but agree.”

“I understand that Nick couldn’t tell me what goes on here at night,” Erica said, but he still could have told me about the family that you have, here.”

“I thought Nick was the only reason why you were still in my life after we divorced,” Larry said. “That’s pretty much why we didn’t speak to each other after Nick turned 18 until you made that phone call.”

“Yeah. that’s true,” Erica confided. “But it’s still such a huge part of Nick’s life, from the look of it.”

Larry was about to say something when another voice rang through the apartment. “Larry? Are we having visitors this evening?” the voice asked.

“Yeah, Kah,” Larry called out as the voice’s owner, the same stern man from the photos, walked into the living room. “Just Erica.”

“So, you are Larry’s ex-wife,” the man said. “I am Larry’s husband, Kahmunrah.”

“ Oh, it's nice to meet you” Erica says, it's a little weird to see this man in a royal outfit. “I didn't even know Larry got remarried.”

“Well it was a rather small ceremony” Kahmunrah takes Larry's hand “ if I had it my way we would have had a massive celebration”

“Uh hu” Larry gives Kahmunrah a kiss on the cheek, “you nearly passed out during our wedding, dropped the rings Ahk and Carter had to hold you up”

“You hold me up” Kahmunrah purrs out.

He looks so happy, Erica smiles a bit “ I've never seen you like this”

“Like what?” Larry asked.

“So…happy,” Erica said. “So put together.”

“Well, that’s how well this museum suits me,” Larry said, leaning close to Kahunrah.

“How did you two meet?” Erica asked.

“Well…it wasn’t under the best of circumstances,” Kahmunrah said.

“You tried to take over the world when we first met,” Larry said. “At least in my current life, anyway.”

“Current life?” Erica asked, confused. “What do you mean?”

“Oh;” Larry said, chuckling nervously. “This is my second and current life. My past life was a hunter who was Kahmunrah’s first love.”

“So, you two are literally soulmates,” Erica said, amazed.

“Yeah, I guess we are,” Larry said as Nick burst upstairs.

“Dad? There’s an emergency with Kuzco!” Nick said before noticing Erica. “Mom? What are you doing here?”

“Nick?” Erica asked. “I didn’t know you were working tonight. And what emergency are you talking about?”

“Dad will have to see it for himself!” NIck said.

“In that case, it sounds pretty serious,” Larry said, he and Kahmunrah getting ready to follow Nick.

“I’m coming, too,” Erica said, “to make sure Nick doesn’t get hurt.”

“Mom, I’m an adult now,” Nick said. “You don’t need to worry about me all the time.”

“I’m your mom I’m always going to worry” Erica says.

Larry and Nick lead the pack running down stairs the massive commotion in the museum proper has Kuzco knocked down with Pacha and Frankie blocking a pair of attackers. Pacha and Frankie are both sporting injuries but refusing to back down from a slim looking woman wielding a staff and dressed in mostly black and dark purple and standing next to her Merenkahre.

“Great my crazed father in law is out…” Larry grumbles.

Kahmunrah huffs out, “really father, I thought we were making progress!”

“You left me locked in a basement and call that progress?” Meremkahre fires back, “Yzma, understands my vision”

“Exactly!” Yzma said. “Now stand aside, night guard, or die!” Yzma thought about it. “Well, you will die, either way, but if you don't stand aside, your death will be slow and painful.”

“I won't allow my husband to die, at all!” Kahmunrah said, standing in front of Larry.

“Fine, then, you will die, as well,” Merenkahre said.

“You'd kill your own son?!?” Erica asked, shocked.

“I will kill anyone who stands in the way of reclaiming my throne,” Merenkahre said. “Me and my new queen!”

“Wait, you and Yzma got together?” Frankie asked.

“Okay; that is gross beyond all reason,” Kuzco said.

“Quiet, you!” Yzma pointed her sword at Kuzco. “I practically raised you, and you'd toss me aside? I deserve to rule this museum with my new love, not you and Merenkahre's bratty sons!”

“I would not rule out Ahkmenrah just yet,” Merenkahre said. “There might be hope for him, yet.”

“Yeah…I don't think Ahk will go along with your little coup,” Kuzco said. “He's way too much of a good guy for that.”

“I said silence!” Yzma said.

“Or what?” Pacha asked. “You'll take us all down? Because fat chance of that happening?” Merenkahre moved to strike…only to be blocked by Larry.

“You…you've been a thorn in my side for thousands of years, hunter!” Merenkahre growled out. “You and Kahmunrah both.”

“Yeah? And you're the worst father in history,” Larry said, glaring back at his father-in-law. “Have you ever considered that the reason why Kah became the tyrant he was known as in history was because of you?”

“Kahmunrah was never meant for the crown in the first place!” Merenkahre growled out.

“And if I remember my Egytology right, neither were you,” Carter said, walking up.

“Wait wait wait,” Kuzco said, looking at Merenkahre, “you weren't meant to be pharaoh?”

“He wasn’t” Carter holds up a notebook, “Shepseheret is the one with the noble blood, Merenkahre was a necromancer that worked his way into the royal court-”

“-Shut up boy” Merenkahre growls out.

“- and his older brother was supposed to marry into the royal line” Carter says simply and tosses the notebook to Larry who catches it, “but he never got that chance did he?” Carter looks over at Merenkahre, “Grandpa” he almost spits the word out like an insult.

“Your brother died under mysterious circumstances…” Larry looks up from the notebook, “and don’t try to deny it Carter got this information from your old palace from records you tried to bury”

“I had to secure power at all costs,” Merenkahre said.

“And can you blame him?” Yzma added. “When he is much better suited to be king than his fool of an elder brother?”

“...What did you do to your brother?” Pacha asked.

“Why did you assume that I did anything?” Merenkahre asked.

“Well, you seem pretty evil enough to, I don’t know, kill your big bro or something,” Kuzco said.

“Maybe that brother can tell us exactly how he died,” Carter said. “We found his body back in Egypt.” Merenkahre looked shocked for a few seconds before hiding it.

“Where is he?” Nick asked.

“Storage,” Carter said. “Let's me get him real quick!”

“Stop right there,” Merenkahre ordered, blocking Carter's path.

“You can’t order me around,” Carter said.

“Yes, I can,” Merenkahre said sternly. “I am the Pharaoh-”

“Actually, your sons are the rulers here,” Pacha said, “not you.” At that, Pacha grabbed Merenkahre, allowing Carter to rush to storage.

“So, what are you going to do with me?” Yzma said, a challenging tone in her voice.

“Make sure you won't hurt anyone, either,” Frankie said, quickly disarming and capturing Yzma.

“Let's me go, you fool!” Yzma said.

“No way,” Frankie said. “I won't let you hurt ANYONE!”

Hey, do you think that Merenkahre really did kill his brother? Connor asked Larry.

“I'm starting to think he did,” Larry said.

“Who are you talking to?” Erica asked.

“Oh, yeah,” Larry said. “The tablet affects unwound parts, too. The unwind in my head is Connor Lassiter.”

“Connor Lassiter? As in the Akron AWOL?” Erica asked before laughing incredulous. “My ex-husband has the Akron AWOL in his head!”

“Yes, but he prefers it if you use his name,” Larry said as Carter walked up with an ancient Egyptian man that bears a strong family resemblance to Merenkahre, Kahmunrah, and Ahkmenrah.

“I figured I could have time to kinda introduce him to everyone but guess this works too” Carter nudges the man forward, “This is Donkor”

“Hello…?” The man looks confused and lost, “I’m uh not sure exactly what’s happening is that Meren? What’s going on?”

“It’s a very…very long story” Larry says, “but yeah that’s you brother and he’s causing a lot of issues”

“Oh can’t say I’m shocked” Donkor says, “he’s always been very attention driven…and it looks like he got that magic working we were working on, hum well he was always clever”

“Attention seeking and clever hu?” Larry glances over at Khamunrah.

“I’m better now!” Kahmunrah objects.

“Meren really?” Donkor grumbles, “you have to create drama in the after life?”

“You squandered your gift!” Merenkahre growls, “who ever heard of using necromancy for purposes of peace.”

“Well, it appears your sons managed it,” Donkor said. “This is actually the first time I met them, and I already heard wonderful things about them.”

“Thank you,” Ahkmenrah said. “Now, tell us what happened when you died?”

“Well, I was getting ready to turn in for the night,” Donkor recalled. “Merenkahre walked in with a glass of wine. As soon as I drank every drop, I fell ill. By the time the healers came for me, I already died.”

“It sounds like Father poisoned you,” Kahmunrah said, glaring at Merenkahre.

“So what if I did?” Merenkahre asked. “The throne should be mine, not Donkor's!”

“And that’s enough to throw you and Yzma back into long term storage,” Larry said, Pacha and Frankie carrying the two away.

“So sorry about that,” Larry apologized to Erica. “Want to continue this discussion another night?”

“Yes, that would be nice,” Erica said, still feeling tense from the drama. “See you tomorrow night.”

“Yeah, see you,” Larry said as Erica left.

“Well, as far as first impressions go, that could have gone better,” Kahmunrah said.

“For Erica or your uncle Donkor?” Larry asked.

“For both,” Kahmunrah said. “We should have another opportunity to show that every night was like tonight.”

“I'm willing to believe that,” Donkor said. “You might have Merenkahre's negative traits, but you have enough positive traits that I can tell that you're still rather different from him.”

“Well, I try to AVOID being like my father,” Kahmunrah said. “Let me tell you how horrible of a parent he was.” As Kahmunrah and Ahkmenrah told Donkor of their childhood, Larry couldn't help but smile at the fact that Kahmunrah and Ahkmenrah finally have a good father figure in the form of their uncle.

Should we do our rounds while Kah and Ahk catch their uncle up to everything that happened? Connor asked.

“Let's,” Larry agreed as he walked off to check on everything.

Chapter 13

Notes:

This is the end of the Exhibit AWOL series as a whole. Thnks so much to BluePenDragon for everything. As I said to her, I most likely wouldn't have finished the first story in the series without her, and it wouldn't be what it is without her. If you made it to the end, thank you for reading! :D

Chapter Text

“So, you've been doing this ever since Nick was 10?” Erica asked when she returned the next evening.

“Pretty much,” Larry said with a shrug. He was giving Erica a tour of the museum. “Though my and Nick’s roles in the interactive exhibit here is much more recent.”

“I've seen ads of those on TV,” Erica said. “I was planning on seeing one with Don at some point. But the fact that it's technically about your and Nick’s past lives…”

“It's incredible, I know,” Larry said.

“How long?” Erica asked simply.

“How long have I known that I even HAVE a past life?” Larry asked.

“That, and how long did you know that Connor is in your head?” Erica said, tapping her head in the location that Larry has his scar on his own head.

“Roughly the same amount of time, a few years,” Larry said.

“And he comes to life at night here like everything else?” Erica asked.

“Exactly,” Larry said. “Connor almost always has something to say.”

Like how we should check to see how well Donkor is adjusting, Connor said.

“Right,” Larry said with a nod.

“What did Connor say?” Erica asked.

“That we should check on Donkor,” Larry said.

“So does Connor help you with your work?” Erica asks, “Sorry I just there’s so much when it comes to what’s going on with you now…”

“Tell me about it” Larry chuckles. He heads toward the renovated Egypt exhibit, Donkor is talking with his nephews and he looks to be settling in. “Evening” Larry slides up to Kahmunrah’s side, “how’s everything going?”

“Well,” Kahmunrah says with a smile, “Our uncle seems happy and more than willing to help us with the tablet’s magic, it’s a shame we didn’t have him here sooner we could have done so much more”

“He’s here now” Larry says nudging Kahmunrah’s shoulder, “and looks like he’s happy to have family that appreciates him”

“That I am hunter” Donkor smiles, “my nephews have told me just about everything and may I say, it’s wonderful you’ve managed to find each other in your second life. Some soulmates aren’t so lucky but you two are clearly very tightly bound”

“How tightly, exactly?” Larry asked.

“By my estimation, you two are fated to find each other no matter how many times you are reborn,” Donkor said. “You two are very blessed, indeed.”

“So…Larry will always find Kahmunrah, no matter how many times he's reincarnated?” Erica asked.

“Precisely,” Donkor said. “Kahmunrah and his hunter are truly fortunate.”

“Yes, I very much know that,” Kahmunrah said, wrapping an arm around Larry. “And I won't ever let him go.”

“Well, I won't exactly live forever…” Larry said.

“He's right,” Erica said. “You and your family might not grow older, but regular people like me and Larry definitely will.”

Larry nodded. “I don't want to leave you, but…but there will come a day that I have to.”

“Look on the bright side,” Ahkmenrah said. “If what our uncle said is true, Kahmunrah, then Larry will return to you in his third life.”

“But the time between his first two lives are literally thousands of years apart,” Kahmunrah pointed out. “How much longer would I have to wait for Larry to return to me?”

“Who knows?” Donkor said. “That is the uncertain part.”

“Well…let's make each moment in my current life count, okay?” Larry asked.

“Of course,” Kahmunrah agreed, kissing Larry.

Years of peace pass and while Larry and Connor can’t call those years boring they are routine. It’s a comforting routine, until the day Larry just finds it to hard to keep walking his rounds, Nicky and Frankie officially take over as guards once he retires, though Nicky takes on more of the work than Frankie. After all Frankie has his carrier on the stage, and later film. He becomes the most famous and beloved composite person and is an outspoken supporter of social projects to help not only his siblings but at risk teens, Frankie makes it his life’s mission to never see anything like unwinding come back. The Pendragon family stays in contact with the museum for the most part but most of them are busy with projects similar to Frankie’s education and furthering opportunities for anyone in need become their biggest goals.

It’s nice to see good people stand strong. Larry and Connor sort of fade into the background and they sort of like it that way, quiet years with family watching Cleo grow up, watching Nicky and Macy start their own family and even seeing Carter taking pride in his work in Egyptian history. Long forgotten histories come to life with Carter’s work and untold stories preserved for newer generations.

Peace and growth this is how it should be. Kahmunrah sits by Larry’s side in the quiet nights where the former guard can barely find the energy to get out of bed. Their children and grandchildren visit regularly, and Kahmunrah readies himself for the day he knew was coming for years.

Larry passes peacefully, he and Connor go together to stand before Anubis for judgement. At least that’s what Kahmunrah tells himself for comfort.

Kahmunrah spends years in mourning, not even seeing his grandchildren cheers him or his favorite grand nephew (Frankie’s oldest son) The grumpy older pharaoh becomes stoic and standoffish only speaking to guests when Ahkmenrah forces him too. Years after Larry’s passing, a new night guard is brought the help cover the expanded museum grounds. The guard, Chase Andrews, looked around. Everything looked very familiar, somehow, as if he had covered those grounds, before. Not helping were the weird dreams that he'd been having, lately. Dreams involving a prince in ancient Egypt, stopping a few former guards from stealing the Tablet of Ahkmenrah from the museum he now works at, rescuing a bunch of strange people at the Smithsonian, being rescued at the Smithsonian by the prince, now a pharaoh. Chase was brought out of his train of thought when the sun set, and to his amazement, everything came to life like they did in his dreams!

Screaming as soon as the T-Rex skeleton came to life, he heard a voice that was strange but very familiar: “Rexy, down!” Chase saw a night guard walk up. “Sorry about that. Rexy is kind of our guard dog. I'm Nick Daley, by the way. The head night guard.”

“Chase Andrews,” Chase introduces himself simply. “Have we met? You seem very familiar.”

“Well, we HAVE been waiting for a specific person to come here…” Nick said. “Did you have any weird dreams, lately?”

Chase chuckles, “Have I ever” He lets Rexy sniff and huff at him, “a lot of them around Egypt if you can believe it”

“Strangely enough I can” Nick says he starts to show Chase around but to his surprise Chase catches on quickly. He has no issue with the animals and even doges Dexter with a scary amount of speed managing to keep the keys away from the theaveing monkey. “Here we go” Nick says leading Chase to the Egypt exhibit, “You gotta meet the royal family before we really get you settled in, the brother Pharaohs sort of run this place-”

“Kah?” Chase asks looking over at the older brother, something in the new guard’s voice has a tone of familiarity.

“Could it be?” Kahmunrah said, his voice full of hope for the first time in years.

“There is only one way to know for sure,” Ahkmenrah said, leading Chase to the tablet before performing the spell to help a person remember past lives. When Chase woke up, he felt very dizzy.

“How do you feel?” Kahmunrah asked, helping Chase up.

“Like I just remembered two lifetimes’ worth of memories,” Chase said. “In my first life, I met you when I saved you from a hyena, and in my second, we met at the Smithsonian, where you pretty much tried to use the Tablet to take over the world.”

“Larry!” Kahmunrah said, hugging Chase.

“Well, my name is Chase Andrews in this life,” Chase corrected.

“It hardly matters, right now!” Kahmunrah said, his heart full of joy. “You returned to me!” Kahmunrah kissed Chase, who kissed back. Nick awkwardly cleared his throat, reminding everyone that he's still here.

“I'm going to check on everyone,” Nick said before leaving.

“What is this I hear?” Donkor said as he walked in. “Has Kahmunrah finally reunited with his hunter, again?”

‘Yeah” Chase loops his arms around Kahmunrah, “and now I feel like I’m home”

“You are my hunter” Kahmunrah says with a smile. Chase kissed Kahmunrah again before snuggling up to him, looking forward to what his third life has to offer. Whatever comes his way, he will always have Kahmunrah and his museum family by his side, and he couldn’t be any happier.
