Chapter 1: A Dreadful Chat

Chapter Text

Medkit sighed. His thoughts consisted of nothing but a begging, longing urge for freedom from that place- Swords. He couldn’t even think of that place. Medkit forced his mind away from the subject of his unfortunate home life; if he was trapped there physically, the least he could do was live in another area mentally. The secrets of the Inpherno called to Medkit; he just knew it. The world was filled with opportunities and undiscovered elements hidden in plain sight. All the depressed, demotivated inphernal could do was ruminate on his unfortunate situation. After all, he was probably one of the few individuals who never saw the sun’s rays until he had the privilege to go outside under supervision. Heck, why was he calling the right to go outside a privilege? Usually, a normal inphernal would just grab their keys, open their door, and roam wherever they wish without being constricted to their home. Maybe their homes would be better than the dormitories at Blackrock. Medkit was clueless on that, though; he was always stuck with his bitter coworker. Ever since the fight had gone down, Blackrock superiors agreed to force them together until they work out their relationship; it caused nothing but frustration for Medkit, and he wasn’t sure if Subspace, the coworker whom he frequently argued with, felt the same way. The only mutual agreement the two could come to was that they both resented each other. Otherwise, it was obvious that the two would never work together, however, management had plans.

“Scientists Subspace and Medkit, please go to the main office as soon as possible.” The announcer called throughout the science block.

Medkit unwillingly ceased work and climbed up the dark brown wooden stairs towards the higher part of the building. While he didn’t particularly enjoy carrying out experiments and mindlessly completing math equations every and all day - he knew that being summoned by HR meant nothing good. The teal-horned inphernal knew the unforgiving nature of the dictator-adjacent governing body of the Blackrock science department. After finally making it to the top of the stairs, a putrid stench exits the well-made door, greeting him.

‘Great,’ Medkit groaned to himself. ‘I think I can tell who’s arrived first.’

Reluctantly, Medkit placed his hand around the handle and opened the door to see exactly who he expected to see - it was that stupid bitch, Subspace! Medkit could feel himself start bruxing against his will, his teeth were already marked with half yellow spots on his teeth from his stress habits. He knew he had to deal with them as soon as he could receive help, however, he was in no position where he would be able to find an individual who would even bother to support him. Medkit’s teeth ached painfully and he put on a sorrowful look as he slowly walked into the room, slightly infuriating HR. The time he took to reach his designated seat frustrated HR, allowing Medkit to crack a small grin.

“Hello.” Medkit said in an unbothered tone, “May I ask, why did you call us here?”

He felt sweat crawl onto his hands. Medkit quickly made an effort to remove any signs of visible stress from the other’s point of view. He continuously twitched his eyes to the elephant in the room next to him. Subspace. The smell was horrific, comparable to a corpse, and HR knew that and that was the first time an empathetic look was given to the teal inphernal. That creature was insufferable, always mocking Medkit in his jolly-sounding voice. He heard sliding shoes slip towards him - dear Swords - Subspace was approaching him.

“’Ey Meddy~” Subspace giggled, attempting to strike a reaction in Medkit. “ Why do ya think we’re ‘ere?”

Medkit brushed the invasive guest off to the side and waited for an answer to his previous question.

“Well, can you answer my question?’ Medkit asked, getting a little short-tempered. ‘Here, let me reiterate - why did you call us here?”

“Well, after some discussion with other members of the company,” The mysterious inphernal, seated on the office chair, said. “We have come to the conclusion that you two need to work better together, you two - Subspace and Medkit - are constantly fighting over pointless things.”

The member of HR made a clicking sound with his tongue as he saw that Subspace was starting to zone out. As Subspace heard the demanding noise, he quickly regained consciousness.

“So what will our solution be?” The HR inphernal smiled. “We will lock you two in a room together until you learn how to get along! Like children!”

Medkit groaned, contemplating his life decisions. If only he didn’t have a short temper, this would’ve never happened. Most of the time, he started the arguments. To justify it, Subspace was always tormenting Medkit to set off a reaction in him in some sort of way. Like that time when Medkit nearly got the correct answer for a complex mathematical equation, then, while his papers were unsupervised, Subspace ate the paper. It was the most grotesque thing Medkit had ever witnessed - just why? All he could do was question Subspace’s intentions. Well - it was already known Subspace enjoyed infuriating Medkit, however, Medkit didn’t realise he would go through these lengths in order to ruin Medkit’s day.

Subspace smiled at the news, blushing a bit. The blushing creeped out Medkit, but it was probably one of Subspace’s odd behaviours, and so Medkit then chose not to think too much of it.

“When will we be locked in that room together?” Medkit asked the superior inphernal.

“Great question!” HR laughed. “Now!”
