A groan was heard as Lan Huan walked into the house, instantly alerting him to how wrong that sounded. His husband was home, the man should’ve been resting, especially so close to his due date.
Not that it ever stopped Wei Ying from doing anything that came to mind, it was a miracle if he ever truly rested - which was not the case right now.
“A-Ying?” Lan Huan asked as he hurriedly placed the grocery bags down on the counter and strode quickly to the room he’d heard the sound come from.
The sight he walked in on had his eyes widening in surprise before he choked back a chuckle, shaking his head in amusement. Wei Ying was sitting on the ground, a hand behind him keeping him up while the other was flat on his stomach; a pout on his lips.
“What happened?” Lan Huan asked as he stepped further into the room, crouching down beside the other who pouted even harder - if that were even possible.
“I was trying to get Shuoyue out from under the couch but he wasn’t having it and launched himself after Suibian.” Wei Ying responded, taking the hand Lan Huan held out for him to help him up.
Lan Huan hummed in response, looking Wei Ying over for any injuries and sighing in relief when he saw none. “Why was he under the couch?” He asked, slipping Wei Ying's hand into the crook of his elbow and leading him to their kitchen.
“You know he hates thunder, and the storm is getting terrible…” Wei Ying sighed, sitting down slowly onto the barstool by the counter. Lan Huan winced slightly as just then another peal of thunder shattered through the downpour outside.
He could hear the cats bolting; two of them had never been the best with storms and it really showed as one hissed loudly. Suibian a Burmese cat, bolted into the room, making a beeline for the two of them only to launch himself into Lan Huan’s arms and bury his furry little head into his elbow.
Shuoyue was right behind him, the white Russian cat launching himself to curl around the taller male's shoulders and dig his claws into the thick sweater. Chenqing a sleek Bombay cat and Liebing a Russian blue padded into the room at a much calmer pace; uncaring of the storm outside.
They both hopped onto the counter and butted their heads against Wei Ying who gave them both a slight smile, reaching out to pet them.
“I should’ve gone for groceries tomorrow.” Lan Huan murmured, cradling Suibian who yowled pitifully as another crash of thunder sounded.
Wei Ying snorted, turning to arch a brow. “With your uncle coming tomorrow? No way.” He tutted, lips twitching as Lan Huan wrinkled his nose from the reminder.
There was nothing against his uncle, he’d raised him and his younger brother after what happened to their parents; but the man was incredibly strict with most things. And he and Wei Ying always clashed; their intelligence bounds ahead of most - and Lan Qiren hated being bested; which happened often against Wei Ying.
“Let me put these away and we can go curl up in bed.” Lan Huan said as he slipped Suibian into Wei Ying’s arms, the cat stiffening for a moment before relaxing slightly; curling slightly on top of his protruding stomach.
As much as the cats were scared of the storm, there was this intrinsic foresight to be careful around Wei Ying; it was like that with their last children too. The twins were sleeping, though they were surprised they were still sleeping with how loud the thunder was being.
The groceries were put away, Lan Huan followed Wei Ying into their room, a hand to his lower back to help him along. Not that he really needed it, but the thought was appreciated nonetheless.
When they walked inside - the twins were curled up in the middle and it made both soften.
“I definitely put them to sleep in their beds.” Wei Ying whispered before moving closer, Lan Huan helping him up.
“They probably didn’t want to disturb you, you haven’t been sleeping well.” Lan Huan responded quietly, walking around to the other side of the bed. Both boys mumbled softly in their sleep as he climbed in, causing him to pause.
The cats all jumped on the bed, curling into the sheets around the twins. A-Yuan blinked sleepily, whispering “Baba? A-Die?”
“Mnh, we’re here - go back to sleep.” Lan Huan murmured, leaning down to press a kiss to his forehead.
A-Yuan frowned slightly before glancing at Wei Ying who cooed at him softly and reached out, brushing his fingers lightly against his forehead to get his bangs out of the way. “Sleep, little radish.” Wei Ying whispered.
A-Yuan's face smoothed out and he fell back to sleep almost immediately, A-Yi curling back towards Lan Huan who threw his arm over all of them. A big yawn was all he did before relaxing again, it caused both husbands to glance at each other over their little group and smile.
“Sleep, we’ll deal with things tomorrow.” Lan Huan whispered, watching as his husband yawned sleepily.
Wei Ying nodded, before curling up a little bit; A-Yuan grabbing a fistful of his shirt in the process.
It was quiet then as Lan Huan watched his family sleep for a while; if anyone had asked years ago if this was what he thought would happen when he was little; he might’ve brushed it off.
But now he couldn’t imagine anything else; Wei Ying and the boys - and their future baby - were everything to him. Cats included.
