Work Text:

Soobin's been chewing the same piece of flavorless gum for the past hour, back against the wall as she watches Yeonjun kick the vending machine again. It's an old busted up thing, all the buttons are worn down so you can't even tell what you're gonna get. Life is like a box of chocolates, I guess.

Yeonjun huffs like a horse, resting her forehead on the fridge door. Soobin barely looks up from her textbook, just enough to catch a glimpse of the ginger. Choi Yeonjun. Oh, Choi Yeonjun.

Single-handedly has the strangest reputation in Mirage High, though it makes her unforgettable. I mean, she's pretty hard to forget about anyway. Slept in, smudged mascara that makes her look like a raccoon-- her hair is always in a messy ponytail that never gets retouched. Those hands, (calloused from handling percussion equipment every Friday night,) are currently jabbing the coin return button. The machine whirs in protest.

"Unnie, quit." Soobin mumbles, bangs in her face as she writes out the same formula once more. Yeonjun doesn't listen, she never does, she just nudges the machine with her shoe. Soobin closes her eyes in frustration, setting her book down and standing up. Technically, both of them should be practicing right now. There's a football game tomorrow night, Yeonjun's gotta get her snare solo down and Soobin still can't get her stunts correct.

But instead, they sit in the hallway to the band room, doing absolutely nothing. Besides attacking an ancient vending machine and attemping to do trigonometry, if you count those as productive activities. Soobin comes behind Yeonjun, slightly towering over the older.

"Nothing's gonna come out of it. You didn't put enough change in." Soobin speaks calmly, pointing at the flashing red light. Yeonjun blinks uselessly, staring at her feet. "I knew that, actually." The ginger speaks all matter-of-a-factly, pulling a few more coins out of her flannel. She shovels them into the slot, the machine clunks with each one.

"Now try it?" Soobin prompts, crouching down slightly to rest her head on Yeonjun's shoulder. Despite Yeonjun being older, having a more bold personality, she's strangely small for all the talking she does. At a staggering height of 5'4, Soobin, who had a massive growth spurt, still has to grab her marching harness off of the cabinet.

Yeonjun mashes a random button, fingers crossed as she prays that a Mountain Dew drops. Soobin kind of hopes that a Fanta will drop, knowing the older will give it to her without a second thought. The machine makes noises as if it's vending, a few clicks and.... nothing happens?

"You broke it," Soobin states, eyes wide and amused. She adjusts her cheer bag, which jingles a little too loudly.

"No, I fixed it. You'll see." Yeonjun slaps the side of it again for good measure. "Just gotta beat it up a little."

The machine groan, whirrs, and spits out a lone bag of potato chips. Probably sixteen years past expiration date.

"That's not Fanta," Soobin mumbles with a lipgloss-covered pout.

"It's not Mountain Dew either," Yeonjun mutters, clearly offended. She kneels to grab it, but grimaces at the crinkly yellow bag.

"Not even the sour cream kind, this sucks."

"Why does this machine only serve dissapointment and sodium?"

But Soobin opens it anyway, pulling out one of the crumbled chips and tapping Yeonjun's lips with it. The older makes a face like a gremlin, crunching it like it's a personal insult.

The machine grumbles again, dropping another bag. Random. Delayed. Unprompted.

Yeonjun leaps back like it bit her, shoulder hitting Soobin's.

"Dude, we're summoning demons."

The second bag? It's Flamin' Hot Cheetos, which Soobin snatches up a little too eagerly. By the time Yeonjun opens her mouth to speak, the other girl is already shoving them into her bag.

She decides to ignore it, holding back a laugh. "This thing knows too much, I think it's watching us." Yeonjun mumbles, tapping some sort of rhythm onto the fridge door.

Soobin leans on the side of the machine dramatically, curls slipping from behind her ear. "Maybe it saw us makeout behind the bleachers."

Yeonjun nearly chokes on her chips.
