Chapter Text
A bright light.
Monika’s eyes squint as the light shone brightly, burning a white canvas of emptiness in her eyes. Nothing was here, and for a moment, she didn’t think she was either. The white brightness shielded every detail of her surroundings, a mere distraction from whatever room she had found herself in. Monika’s hand lifted to help protect her eyes from the burning sensation of the light, but she found that she couldn’t block out the source of it. Like air, it was everywhere, and upon shutting her eyes, there was only the bright crimson red from behind her eyelids.
She couldn’t escape from it, but as quickly as she had realized this, the light had begun to dissipate. Soon enough her eyes could open into narrowed slits, a confused and slightly dazed emerald piercing from within. Monika’s hand lowered as geometric shapes, lines, and pixels filled the room full of color, one more than just a white splotch. The nothing soon became everything, and a plethora of images filled both her mind and her eyes. A classroom, desks lined up in rows and columns, perfection in every detail. A light much less harsh in comparison to the white nothing from before had filtered in through the windows, reflecting a soft yellow from the floor and walls. Monika’s hands, now staying limp at her sides, had begun to wonder- should she begin to walk? Should she leave the room? Or was she meant to be here?
It was club time.
This, Monika figured, as a familiar face entered the room. Her blue eyes filled every wall, and eventually, a pink joined in reverberating off the ceiling, then a purple echoed in the blank space. Monika was enthralled by the way the colors danced in the light of happiness, worry and fear defeated and seeming to have never touched these colors. They spun and sung a song of contentment, though the brunette had never noticed their mouths open to complete the song. Each body found its place in the room, one on the desk, one in the closet, and one on the floor.
Monika could smile, taking in the sight. It’s all she ever wanted, to call this home, to say she was a part in this creation. The three hues had wondered on their own, a whimsical light bouncing off of each one. They each spoke of a different world, a world that Monika swore to protect, a world that Monika wanted to wrap herself in.
But it was club time, and the doors were shut.
“Okay, everyone!” Monika finally opened her mouth to say. No sound came from her mouth, yet despite this, she knew she spoke. She knew she couldn’t hear herself, that her ears were just simply not at once within her body. The others could hear, but not one had looked up. No noise had disturbed them from their duties, a wall barricaded from her announcement to their heads. Each one bobbed up and down, and still then, Monika smiled. She smiled like she hadn’t ever smiled before, like dawn, the sun rising and peeking through the hills and welcoming the Earth. She stood, standing not too far from the others, exactly where she had been standing since the start of the whiteness.
The clock struck, metal hands clicking into place. The purple girl got up, delicately packing away her book. She left the room, followed by the one with hair of pink, an ambitious look upon her leaving the room. Monika waved them both goodbye, wishing them farewell and for another wonderful meeting tomorrow. They didn’t look back. Monika smiled. The blue walked on her own accord, heading towards the door.
“Sayori?”
The girl didn’t respond. Stopping at the doorway, her frame at the very edge of the world, she looked back. Monika swore she met her eyes, but the blue had quickly glazed over hers, scanning the room for anything accidentally left behind. Then, with a soft hum, she turned off the lights. The door clicked behind her with a satisfying sound, closing off the gate to the other world. Though she had left behind something, but Monika didn’t mind.
Tomorrow school will end and it will be club time again, and once more the whiteness takes over her.
