College was much nicer than people had made it out to be, at least for me, I still feel like my teenage self, maybe it just hadn't sucked the life out of me yet, everyone swears it will eventually, but I don't believe them anymore. What has been sucking the life out of me though was boredom, I had nothing to do here, the work was fairly easy, and I was ahead of my assignments currently so there really was nothing for me to do. The sound of footsteps forcefully pulled me out of my bored thoughts though as my two closest friends came over to me, Hayden and Elliot (feel free to replace their names), they had been with me all throughout high school and they stuck with me now, they're the best, honestly, behind them followed another, Yuki, I didn't like Yuki all that much, she was one of THOSE people, but she's not the focus of this story. I watched as the three sat down around me, Elliot was going on and on about a game they had been playing recently, some mushroom game, I hadn't exactly been listening because it didn't sound like my kinda thing, but as they spoke about it more to Hayden, who looked over it, I began to grow curious. They seemed to notice my interest as they quickly turned their focus onto me.
"(Reader)! Do you wanna hear about Mushroom Oasis?! It's amazing! My favorite game right now!" Elliot grinned ear to ear as they stared at me, their eyes filled with excitement.
I thought about it for a moment, was I really considering playing a game I had almost no interest in, just because I'm bored? Yes. Yes, I was. And I'm going to. I nodded for them to go ahead, and they began speaking immediately, the excitement very evident in their voice as Hayden groaned in annoyance. "Okay! Mushroom Oasis is a visual novel game based around this guy named Mychael! He's got like... green skin! And freaky eyes! But freaky in a good way... Oh, he's just adorable! Did I mention Mychael is a yandere? Oh but!" As they trailed off on their rant, the word 'yandere' had caught my attention. Elliot didn't exactly seem like the type to be into 'yandere' characters, but I suppose I still don't know everything about them, even after all these years, but still. Yandere characters always fascinated me, I understand obsessing over someone but to a point you'd hurt someone just to be with them? It was, intriguing what love can do to a person, fictional or not.
As Elliot's rant was coming to an end, they said another thing that caught my attention "The game's free on Itch.Io!" Oh, I was SO going to play this after classes. I had downloaded other yandere type of games off Itch.Io, it's honestly a shock I hadn't run into 'Mushroom Oasis' before, or perhaps I had and just didn't give it much mind. Elliot appeared to see the look in my eyes as they immediately jumped up and shouted, completely forgetting about any and all social norms. "You're gonna play it?! Really?! I'll have someone to talk to it about?!" Elliot exclaimed, jumping around excitedly, Yuki scoffed and gave a disgusted look to which I had to hold myself from having a go at them for it, they were starting to piss me off. But I brushed off their annoying presence and spoke for the first time since they had joined me.
"Sure, sounds like a good game... and time killer" I muttered as I also stood, the bell for classes was gonna ring soon and I didn't feel like getting a lecture about being late again. Elliot smiled excitedly and helped Hayden up, all of us seemingly forgetting about Yuki, though it didn't appear to matter as they stood up and walked off, completely ditching us. I rolled my eyes but smiled as Elliot began rambling to Hayden about how excited they were for me to play the game. And to be completely honest, maybe I was a little excited to play too, I mean, anything to cure my bored. Right?
