Shuffling echoed through the apartment along with the beeps and buzz of the modern-day technologies zooming around.
“A QR code?”Jay, for the second time in his life, said whilst he held one of Nan-Young’s files.
In his mind, he knew it wasn’t a good idea since—the last time this happened, he and her girlfriend broke up—but he figured that the worst that could happen had already come to pass and scanned it again.
His watch beeped once and the video played.
—
Nan-young lays down her umbrella at their front door, takes her shoes off, and stretches her feet.
She had just come back from seeing her dad as it was his birthday. They see each other a lot now these days, after she told her dad stories of her expedition on Mars, the video he had sent played in the back of her mind, knowing it came through, knowing her dad wasn’t as crazy as he seemed.
She shakes her head.
“Jay?”Her voice echoes as she walks through their unusually quiet apartment.
“I’m home!”
She sees her stuff lying around and she makes her way to it with urgency. She swipes her hand through it and she sees the title.
to Jay.avi
That’s when she hears it.
Sniffles and sobs echoed through coming from above. She looked up to their loft and she immediately dropped her stuff as she rushed upstairs.
“Jay? Oh Jay…”
She crawled up the bed and squeezed the body curled up under the covers.
“Nan-Young, I’m s-so-“ Jay sniffled and sat up he ran his hands along her arms and to her waist and squeezed her back. “—I’m so glad…”
“You shouldn’t have seen that.” She whispered in his hair, scratching his head and patting him on his back.
“No, I’m—I’m glad I watched it now”
His voice seemed so weak and vulnerable, her boyfriend was so soft. How could she ever think to leave him? She was done being selfish.
“You won’t ever need to hear it again.” She cupped his face with gentle hands and swiped away at his stubborn tears.
“Don’t make me, please.”
“No, I already reached the stars. It’s time for me to help you reach them too.” Their lashes touched and it tickled her a bit
since his was still a little wet from the tears. “Thank you for coming to me, for coming with me on that beach”
“Nam-Young, I will always reach out to you, even when we’re worlds apart.” He lays his hand atop hers on his cheek, it shifts as he gives her a wet grin “Literally.”
“Right” She scoffed and laughed.
A few moments passed as they took in each other’s breath. Jay, now lying on Nam-Youngs chest and listening to the rhythmic beat of her heart.
‘I should add this in a song.’ He thinks.
“I’ll tell you again”
“Hm?”
“I’m alive”
“You are.” He looks up at her and admires her face, her wet lashes, her silky black hair framing her face, her lips. He remembers.
“Say it again, the other one”
“Huh”
“You said that you’re ready now right? Let me hear it, from your lips this time.”
“Oh.” She lifted his head and she kissed him. Deep and long—hoping it would convey her apologies.
“I love you, Jay.” She smiled at him. “From the moment you called me by my name.”
“I love you, Nam-Young”
