Chapter Text
Kageyama doesn’t consider himself a lucky person or an unlucky person, for that matter. He believes that things either happen or they don’t, and fate doesn’t have a hand in people’s actions or the events they experience. At least that’s what he would’ve said yesterday if anyone cared to ask, but as he watches the karasuno volleyball captain close the door in his face, he can say in full confidence that he might just be the most unlucky person ever, and all it took for his opinion to change was an annoying idiot and his stupid orange hair, barging into the gym, with his stupid talk about beating him and becoming Karasuno’s ace, who does he think he is saying all that when his skills are nowhere to be found, and now thanks to him Tobio can’t participate in the club.
“I know what we have to do, we’ll dare challenge them to a game” his slams his fist into his open palm in a decisive manner -I’ll show them they need me on the team- he turns to look at the shorter guy and open his mouth to tell him to just make an effort to not get in the way when he looks into his eyes, they’re brown he notices, the setting sun making them look almost as orange as his hair, shining in a way he’s never seen eyes shine before… wait, no, he didn’t just think that, he has regular boring eyes, the same shade as everyone else in the planet, nothing special about them. He feels his face heat up slightly and prays to whoever will listen that it’s not noticeable to the short guy “just don’t get on the way and we’ll win”
“HUH?” hinata jumps in front of him, and now they’re face to face for a few seconds “I know you’re the king of the court but you can’t just tell people to not get in the way and expect them to listen.” he simply looks away from him, why can't he just accept that he doesn’t have the skills to play? It would be simpler, to just let Tobio play “hey! Im talking to you” he returns his stare to Hinata’s face, not to his eyes, to the freckle on the side of his nose, it’s really faint, something he wouldn’t usually notice on other people, busy maintaining eye contact to seem respectful, after all that’s what his parents taught him.
“I’m listening idiot” he mumbles, eyes now moving to stare at one of his eyebrows “and I told you already to not call me that” Sighing, he crosses his arms and looks away from Hinata’s face. “Listen, we just need to show them that we can work together, at least for one game, after that you and I can go our separate ways in practice” He sees hinata nod from the corner of his eye, and they both walk to the gym doors to tell the captain their plan

Hinata knows why they say never meet yout heroes… not that he would consider Kageyama his hero, more like an arrogant movie villain that makes him root for the hero extra hard to defeat. He won’t deny that Kageyama it’s much more better than him, they do call him the king of the court for a reason, it’s because of his great skills as a setter, though he’s not sure why he gets so annoyed when kageyama that, at first he thought it was because they were rivals, and he’s just that annoyed by Hinata, I mean the guy wouldn’t even look at him in the eyes for more than a few seconds! what did he ever do besides lose a game against him, but then the tall first year -tsukisomething- called him that, Kageyama got annoyed again. But if hinata is very talented at something is being stubborn, and his mind is set into being part of karasuno, becoming the next tiny giant, and he will do it even if he has to get along with someone like the king of the court. So after Tsukishima and his green hair friend leave, he turns to kageyama and looks him in the eyes. “We’re going to win this game” he smiles at him with determination, Kageyama only stares at him for a few seconds, kissing his teeth and turning around. “We better” the setter says before grabbing his stuff and walking away. Hinata doesn’t know and Kageyama will never tell him, but a smile appeared on his lips, a small one, probably because the weather feels nice against his sweaty skin…

“A game against Aoba Johsai?” Hinata asks to no one in particular, Suga nods and turns to look at Kageyama “that’s where most of your old teammates went, right?” Kageyama turns to look at the gym doors and nods. Shoyo, runs to be in front of him and hops a little, just enough to be face to face with him and smiles at him, the same way he did the other night “then we’re going to show them how much better you are now!” Kageyama simply frowns at him and Hinata worries he might’ve said the wrong thing, but then Tobio nods, its a very small movement, but it’s enough for Hinata to jump even higher in celebration “the we need to practice more! We need to practice the attack! Unless you’re tired, then I understand” Kageyama now turns to look at Hinata and yells “As if you idiot! You’re the tired one, im gonna set for you until you can’t jump and our quick is perfect!”. They both smile at each other for a quick second, before Kageyama looks away, skin heating up slightly, the game must’ve tired him out more than expected. Hinata runs to talk to Tanaka and show off his new jacket, and Tobio doesn’t do much besides admire the way Shoyo’s nose slightly wrinkles whenever he giggles, his heart stutters, and he decided to sit on the bench… He needs to do more cardio if a practice game has him feeling this way
