a heart like a tidal wave

Summary:

“You know you can’t call every vacation you go on your ‘honeymoon’, right?”

Chan rolled his eyes at Seungkwan, but to everybody’s surprise, it wasn’t him that spoke.

“Says who?” Wonwoo grumbled, ears colouring as Chan’s laugh rang out, bright as a summer’s day. “It’s a trip you go on after getting married, isn’t it?”

Or, the many honeymoons of Jeon Wonwoo and Lee Chan – in every universe.

Chapter 1: sand castles

Summary:

busan, south korea

Chapter Text

“You can be king if you want, Channie-Channie,” Wonwoo said, with the gravity of a hyung who had ignored his own brother’s request to be king not fifteen minutes ago. But that was before he met his new friend Chan, and the concept of generosity had entered his life.

“But—! Hyung-ah, you built the sandcastle – you’re the king!”

“We can both be kings!”

Chan frowned. “Even if halmeoni says I’m too little to get married?”

Now, Wonwoo knew not to criticise one’s husband’s grandmother, but their sand kingdom was at stake!

“She’ll understand – a king needs his king, after all!”

Chapter 2: parasols

Summary:

brighton, england

Chapter Text

It had caused a scandal – but how could it not? The jewel of the Lee family, a handsome proposal inexplicably rejected, and a sudden reappearance in Brighton on the arm of a tall, mysterious dandy – polite society was positively abuzz with the tale of Lee Chan adjusting the purple posy pinned to their lapel.

Chan remained unmoved. The sea air suited her; brought out the freckles on her cheeks and the curls in her hair.

And Wonwoo didn’t mind the heat of the sun, or the stares, if it meant she could carry Chan’s parasol, and shield her from both.

Chapter 3: wave (dot mp3)

Summary:

sydney, australia

Chapter Text

Chan had laughed, when he first saw the camera.

“Did you really have to spend so much money on that?” he had asked. “You could have borrowed one from a fansite!”

But Wonwoo knew that he would have the last laugh; his toes in the sand, lens trained on the waves. Muscled calves showing off a dancer’s balance. Wet shorts strained around the meat of Chan’s thighs, straddling the board.

“Hyung!” Chan called, as he paddled back to shore. “You sure you don’t want another go?”

“Nah,” Wonwoo tilted his chin up for a salty kiss. “I’m fine right here.”

Chapter 4: ocean

Summary:

osaka, japan / seoul, south korea

Chapter Text

Now

“When you said you wanted me to see the ocean,” Wonwoo said, “this isn’t quite what I imagined.”

In the cerulean light of the tank, Chan’s eyes glimmered. “What, did you expect a personal performance of Spell?”

Sliding an arm around Chan’s waist, Wonwoo tugged him closer, and could deny nothing.

Then

“Oh, hyung,” Chan breathed, fingers pressed against the glass. “It’s like being in the ocean.”

Wonwoo stepped carefully into the space behind Chan, sucking in a breath. The moving schools in the water threw dancing shadows across Chan’s face, his eyes wide.

“Yeah,” Wonwoo exhaled. “Beautiful, right?”

Chapter 5: sunscreen

Summary:

jeju island, south korea

Chapter Text

Chan’s swimsuit was a tangle of straps and bows, which was both very sexy and required the even application of sun protection, which Wonwoo took very seriously.

“Unnie, remember that one shoot here, when you oh-so-smoothly offered to help me get my back?”

Wonwoo spluttered, the tube of sunscreen snorting inelegantly between her hands. “You—! The director told me to!”

Suddenly, Wonwoo’s lap was full of warm, golden Chan. “Your crush, caught on camera again,” she sighed, playing with a lock of Wonwoo’s freshly cut hair. “Embarrassing...”

“We’re married.”

“Lucky me,” Chan hummed. “Anyway, want me to get your chest?”

Chapter 6: ice cream

Summary:

shanghai, china

Chapter Text

Cheeks, flushed pink with sun. Tongue, pink with cold, chased ice cream, pink with red beans, dripping stickily down the delicate bones of a wrist. Hair, also pink, because the long summer holiday meant Chan was free from the constraints of his school’s dress code, and was free to torment Wonwoo in as many ways as he pleased.

“Did you know,” Chan started, oblivious, “that ice cream was invented here?”

Wonwoo swallowed. “Oh yeah?”

“Mm! Myungho-hyung told m— oh no, hyung!”

They looked down at the matcha-flavoured puddle at Wonwoo’s feet. Laughing, Chan pulled Wonwoo away. “Can’t take you anywhere.”

Chapter 7: swimming

Summary:

porto venere, italy

Chapter Text

A lot had changed, since the last time they were here. There was no camera crew, for one. They were older, bolder, free to duck into shadowy corners and steal more than just back hugs. Miraculously, Wonwoo hadn’t even gotten seasick on the boat this time, and Chan—

“Now you’re just showing off,” Wonwoo called from the deck as Chan changed stroke, water glittering off his perfect form – a far cry from when they were limited to floating in that azure sea, at the mercy of the waves.

“I’ll teach you,” Chan called back. “Husbands get the first lesson free!”

Chapter 8: tide pools

Summary:

san diego, usa

Chapter Text

A part of Wonwoo wanted to show off a little, to put the two hours he spent looking up facts about local sea creatures on Naver before bed to good use, but Chan’s imaginations were far more entertaining.

“Be careful!” Chan cried, arms wound tight around Wonwoo’s as he tried, and failed, to step into the pool. “Hyung, they might have spikes! Poison!”

“That’ll be a first,” Wonwoo bit down on his smile, “death by starfish.”

“Don’t joke,” Chan's brow furrowed into a glare. Precariously balanced as they were on the seaweed-slimy rocks, Wonwoo couldn’t help but kiss him, starstruck.

Chapter 9: flip-flops

Summary:

gunsan, south korea

Chapter Text

The spell had bound them together, but Wonwoo thought Chan was taking that rather literally. Her touch never left Wonwoo, not even when Wonwoo’s nakedness made her blush – as if she hadn’t seen it all before.

But she hadn’t, Wonwoo conceded, as Chan helped her step her new legs into a pair of old shorts. This part was new to them both.

“Shoes!” Chan cried, stepping out of her flip-flops, before pausing to stare at the pair, calculating.

“We can share?” Wonwoo asked, not intending to make Chan laugh. But she did, like the spill of sun over the waves.

Chapter 10: beach shack

Summary:

nanpo-ri, south korea

Chapter Text

Sometimes, Wonwoo thought about what he had found in that old shack by the ocean, his grandfather’s name carved into the door.

Sometimes, Wonwoo thought about the astonishing softness of the pelt as he held it for the first time, the weight of it in his arms like a child. He thought about the look on Chan’s face when he returned for it, trepidation illuminated by candlelight.

Sometimes, Chan retrieved it from that old shack by the ocean, slipped it over his skin.

Every time, Wonwoo waited in that old shack by the ocean, and every time, Chan would return.

Chapter 11: boardwalk

Summary:

brighton, england

Chapter Text

Arguably, Wonwoo had been caught in a moment of weakness. The sun had glinted just-so on the stray glitter freckling Chan’s summer-warmed shoulder (a remnant from the parade, and the night after), and all else had fallen away.

Until the seagull’s wing smacked his glasses clean off his face, and taken off with his chips.

Having let out a rather undignified squeak, Wonwoo let himself be led to a bench on the boardwalk for inspection.

Careful hands on Wonwoo’s face (nothing bruised but pride), Chan bit his lip, stifling a laugh. “Do you think this also counts as good luck?”

Chapter 12: tangerines

Summary:

jeju island, south korea

Chapter Text

Little fingers, nails stained the colour of dandelions, pressed slightly squished segments of fruit into Chan’s open palm. Citrus burst across his tongue, made all the sweeter by the look on Hyewon’s face, staring at her father in anticipation.

“Delicious – thank you, baby,” Chan pressed a kiss to her sunscreened cheek. “Do you want some too?”

But Hyewon shook her head. “Nuh-uh,” she said, “Dad told me you peel oranges for people you love, so this one’s for you!”

Overwhelmed, Chan tugged his daughter into his lap. “In that case, I’ll peel three more, and let’s share them together, okay?”

Chapter 13: sunrise

Summary:

seoul, south korea

Chapter Text

“Happy one-day anniversary, Chan-ah.”

Staring at the colours painted across the sky, Chan wanted so badly to tease his husband, but he found his eyes stinging instead. Inside the venue, their family continued their celebrations, but the mild morning air had a stillness to it. Quiet settled around them.

Chan untangled his hand from Wonwoo’s, sliding his arms under his jacket, around his waist. On his toes, he pressed their foreheads together. A tilt of his head, and their lips brushed, a tame imitation of the show they had given at the end of the altar.

“Happy one-day anniversary, Wonwoo-hyung.”
