Work Text:
“Soonyoung, what is this?” he heard Jihoon’s tired voice.
Soonyoung could tell he didn’t want to hike for half an hour. A brief pang of guilt overcame him. Until a new idea came to him. He crouched down and looked at Jihoon expectantly.
“Jump on my back.”
“Are you crazy? What if someone sees and recognizes us?”
“As if someone is here at this time of night. Please, baby.”
Jihoon was too tired to argue with him.
Soonyoung was exhausted himself. He just wanted to sleep. They were in the middle of preparing for their next album. Rehearsing every day. Shooting their music video. But he had waited so long.
It was a surprise for Jihoon, and it had to be perfect.
Soonyoung almost made the surprise sooner. Without perfect circumstances. But he persevered and waited. It had to happen sometime!
And finally, the day came, or rather, the night.
The rain finally stopped.
The sky was almost cloudless.
Although they were both exhausted from training, Soonyoung “kidnapped” his boyfriend and drove away with him. In the middle of the night.
Soonyoung climbed the mountain with Jihoon on his back. He might regret it tomorrow. But it was worth it.
“Let me down. I can walk alone,” Jihoon said after a while. Soonyoung let him off his back and grabbed his hand instead.
Up here, they were alone. They weren’t Hoshi and Woozi, but Soonyoung and Jihoon, who could do whatever they wanted.
Even if it meant climbing a mountain at 2:30 in the morning.
He hadn’t chosen a high mountain, but it still took them half an hour to reach the top.
Jihoon stood at the top and stared down. It was a magnificent view from up here, looking down at the lights. But Soonyoung wasn’t interested in them.
He laid the blanket he’d brought in his bag on the ground and tentatively touched Jihoon’s shoulder. When Jihoon turned around, Soonyoung pointed to the blanket. He lay down on it and opened his arm.
As if to double-check that no one else was there, Jihoon looked around. And then lay down in his arm.
“What are we doing here, Soonyoung?” he asked, already much more awake.
“Wait a moment,” Soonyoung told him. He searched the sky. He had to be around here somewhere. He’d been learning about the night sky over the past few weeks. That’s where Orion was. A little further, and he saw the constellation Gemini.
And there they were.
Soonyoung looked at his boyfriend in his arms.
“Jihoon, I love you.” Soonyoung pressed himself closer to the other. It was quite chilly, after all, and they wouldn’t be able to stay up here forever.
Then he stretched out his arm and pointed at the moon and its companion.
“The moon looks beautiful tonight, doesn’t it?” They both knew what it meant. “And look. We even have two.” He let the words trail off. It didn’t really need any explanation. “I love you so much, baby,” he breathed anyway.
Jihoon was silent. When Soonyoung looked back at him, he was staring up at the sky. A gentle smile was on his lips. He raised a hand and placed it on Soonyoung’s chest.
“I don’t know,” he began, looking at him, “whether to tell you how much I love you or ask you if your love will fade again when the mini moon is over. That’s it, isn’t it? The comet they call the mini moon.”
“Shh. That doesn’t count.” Soonyoung tried to pout. But being up here alone with Jihoon made him so happy that he couldn’t manage it. “Yes, it is. I think tonight is the first night you can really see it. Let me put it with other words.” They both looked up at the sky again while Soonyoung thought of something else.
“The moon looks beautiful tonight, doesn’t it?” he began again. “And look. We even have two. But even if the smaller one disappears again, my feelings for you will never go away, Baby. You are so important to me. So incredibly important. This is a sign from the universe that my feelings for you are much, much stronger. But since it would be too obvious, it will soon make the sign disappear again.”
Jihoon hummed. He sounded satisfied.
“Was that good?”
“Are you asking me this because you want to turn it into lyrics or to confess your love to me?” Jihoon asked amused.
“If you think they’re good lyrics?”
Jihoon sat up. He turned his gaze away from the moon again and towards Soonyoung.
“Soonyoung?”
“Hmm?”
“That was wonderful. Thank you so much. But let’s share this moment just between us.”
A wonderful way of saying that it wasn’t good enough for lyrics.
Soonyoung also sat down to be close to Jihoon again. “There’s still something missing.” He tapped Jihoon on the tip of his nose, and even though he couldn’t really see it, Soonyoung pursed his lips.
“I love you so much, Soonyoung. Even if each star represented a little bit of my feelings, they wouldn’t be enough to represent how I feel about you.” Jihoon threw his head back and laughed. It really hadn’t been good. When he’d calmed down, he continued, “I love you. You’re incredibly important to me.”
Was he just repeating Soonyoung’s words? Now he really wanted to pout, but then Jihoon leaned toward him and their lips met.
Soonyoung sighed.
Their little adventure had paid off.
“Let’s go on a date as soon as we’re done performing,” he begged.
Jihoon kissed him again. “What do you want to do?”
Stay up here, make out, and forget about the world?
“Surprise me~”
Unfortunately, they had to descend shortly afterward. They had a lot to do tomorrow, or rather today, and they wanted to get some sleep.
“At least I have a little time to think about it. This is hard to top,” Jihoon said calmly.
He liked it. Soonyoung had already suspected it, but hearing it was better.
“So you liked my surprise, huh?” he asked, eager for his confirmation.
Jihoon squeezed his hand. “Very much.”
When they arrived at the car, they both looked up at the sky again. From here, the moon was no longer completely visible. It was half-obscured by the mountain.
“Soonyoung?”
“Hmm?” Soonyoung unlocked the car.
“The moon looks beautiful tonight, doesn’t it?” Jihoon asked gently.
“So much Baby.”
