Chapter 1: Stepping Over the Threshold

Chapter Text

 It’s Twilight out.

The moon cast a soft glow upon her face, the blue light making the world feel ethereal. She took a deep breath in, the smell of rain enveloping her senses. The house seemed to glow under the light of the hour. She was back in Forks, indefinitely. She hesitated before stepping across the entrance of the house.

Bella awoke with a start, tumbling off her bed. She groaned, sitting up. She was vaguely aware of the noise coming from downstairs. Her mom and Phil must be home today, she supposed. She looked up, surprised by the gloomy picture outside of her window.

Oh right. Forks.

She grabs her favorite pair of sweatpants and a baggy purple hoodie. As she walks down the stairs, she registers two voices in addition to her father’s.

“Bella! How the hell have you been, Loca?” She barely registers the words before being attacked into a bear hug.

“Jake!” She chokes out, his little arms squeezing the air out of her. “Can’t…Breathe.”

“My bad,” Jacob released his death grip. “We got you a homecoming gift!” Curiously, Bella followed him outside the house. She gasped in awe when she saw it, a red chevy pickup.

“No way!” She exclaimed. Jacob grinned at her,

“Told you she’d like it.” Charlie said to Billy, Jacob’s father.

“You looking forward to school tomorrow Bella?” Bella sighed, the school at Forks was unbelievably small. 377 students, 378 now that Bella was here. Bella had trouble fitting back in school in  Phoenix, she doubted she could make friends at a school one tenth of that size. Her mother had always been her best friend but they still didn’t exist on the same wavelength.

“As much as I can, Billy.” She gave him a half-hearted smile.

“So, Bella, Charlie and I got some stuff to discuss,” Billy started, “Why don’t you take Jake and get reacquainted with the town?” Bella looks at Jacob to make sure he’s okay with the idea. He looks like he’s already well acquainted with the plan. She nods, before climbing into her new truck. Jake follows suit. They drive around, the rain pattering against the windows. Jacob chattered on about everything Bella has missed since she was last here. She sighed, she really hadn’t missed much, Forks was a rather quiet town.

“The Cullens have moved back into town.” Jacob said sourly.

“The Colons?” Bella racked her brain for that name but came up blank.

Cullens , an old family. They don’t get along with us.” Jacob informed her. Bella hurrumphed. She dropped Jacob off at La Push before heading back home.

Bella shoved her things into the tiny wardrobe, she missed her walk-in closet back in Phoenix. She carefully picked out an outfit for her first day at school, a simple black tank top and flared jeans. She looked out the window and exhaled slowly. She really needed to get clothes better for the weather in Forks. She sat through dinner with her dad and his sad attempts to get to know her better. He seems to forget that she’s 17, not seven. After begrudgingly wishing Charlie good night, she stomped up the stairs to her room. She put on her favorite Smashing Pumpkins CD to drown out the uneven noise of the rain. She slumped onto her bed and fell asleep thinking of the sun rising in the morning.
