Chapter 1: Can’t Help Falling in Love

Chapter Text

It started with a double date.

Except Harry wasn’t really anyone’s date.

Not that it mattered much. He was fine being the plus one to his best friend Liam’s new romance. At least, that’s what he told himself as he walked into the buzzing warmth of a downtown karaoke bar, a cozy, slightly chaotic place lined with fairy lights and voices too loud for a Friday night.

Zayn and Liam were already tucked together like puzzle pieces that finally found the right fit. Zayn, with his leather jacket and lazy grin, looked like he belonged in a magazine spread, and Liam, practically glowing beside him, looked like the kind of guy who still held open doors and remembered your dog’s name.

It was disgustingly cute.

Harry watched them and smiled, biting back the smallest sigh. He wanted that. Not the drama. Not the fireworks. Just… the ease. The kind of comfort that felt like coming home. The quiet gravity that keeps people circling each other like planets.

Then he walked in.

The door swung open with a jingle, and the air shifted.

The man didn’t so much enter as appear, like the universe had decided the lightning was too dull and needed a little chaos. He was all denim and cheeky grins, messy hair and eyes that sparkled with something unnameable. He walked like he belonged anywhere, shoulders relaxed, head high, like this world was his and he was generous enough to share it.

Harry felt it before he even understood what he was feeling.

Something inside him clicked.

And then it sparked.

“You must be Liam’s famous Harry.” The man said, his voice wasn’t loud, but it cut through everything else. Clear. Warm. A little rough like laughter lived on the edges.

His eyes landed on Harry like a spotlight, not invasive, curious. Like he was looking to see what was really there, not what Harry projected.

“I’m Louis.”

Harry stared. Blinked. Open his mouth.

Nothing.

His brain was a blank page and Louis had just walked in like a headline.

“That’s Harry,” said Liam, rescuing him with a smile, clapping Harry gently on the shoulder. “told you he is better in person.”

Harry cleared his throat, barely managing to find his voice.

“Famous?” Harry echoed, and hoped it didn’t come out as strangled as it sounded in his head. “That’s a bit generous.”

Louis laughed, quick and easy, and held out a hand.

“He talks about you like you are a bloody legend. Had to see if the hype was real.”

Harry took his hand.

It was warm. Calloused in places. Firm. Steady.

Something zinged up his arm, and Harry was very aware that he didn’t want to let go.

His lips curved into something softer than a smile, maybe wonder. Maybe disbelief.

“Guess I better live up to it then.”

“Please do,” Louis grinned wider. Zayn snorted somewhere behind them.

“Play nice, Lou,” said Zayn with fondness.

“I am always nice,” Louis said, never leaving Harry. “Aren’t I, Liam?”

“Debatable,” Liam murmured, but he was smiling.

Louis slid into the booth next to Harry. He sat close, too, thigh brushing against Harry’s under the table like it was the most natural thing in the world.

Harry froze for a moment, then forced himself to relax, even though every inch of him was buzzing. He could feel the exact points of contact, his leg, his arm where it accidentally brushed Louis’ jacket. Even the air felt warmer here.

“So, karaoke. What is your go-to song, Legend?” Louis tilted his head and looked at him with an unreadable smile.

“I don’t really sing.” Harry shook his head, heart stumbling over itself.

“Not even one guilty pleasure?” Louis gasped, hand dramatically pressed to his chest. “Nothing from the nineties? Not even, like… a tragic ballad you pretend isn’t on your playlist?”

“Maybe one or two.” Harry laughed, surprised it even came out.

“There we go,” Louis said triumphantly. “I’ll get it out of you before the night’s over.”

He leaned back in the booth, arms stretched across the back like he owned the entire damn place, and Harry’s skin lit up where Louis’ fingers just barely grazed his shoulder.

Harry tried to focus on anything else. On Zayn and Liam’s soft laughter. On the drink menu. On breathing.

But Louis had a gravitational pull.

He spoke with his whole face, with wild hand gestures and playful eye rolls. He teased Liam until Liam was red in the face, and flirted with the bartender until they were giggling. He asked Harry questions casually, like he was just making conversation, favourite film, worst tattoo, dream holiday, but each answer made Harry feel more seen than he had in ages.

Because Louis listened.

Like he really wanted to know.

Harry found himself smiling more than he meant to. Laughing at things that weren’t that funny. Watching Louis’ mouth when he spoke and then looking away quickly, afraid he would be caught.

He was in trouble.

He knew it.

Because this wasn’t looking like just attraction. This wasn’t feeling… fleeting. This was the kind of thing that crept under your skin and stayed there.

Louis Tomlison was sunlight and storm clouds, a hurricane in a denim jacket, and Harry had barely met him.

And still…

Still, Harry was already wondering what it would feel like to wake up forever next to someone like him.

***

The four of them had settled into a cracked leather booth at the back of the bar, half shoved under a flickering old chandelier that buzzed with the weak hum of electricity. The laminated menus stuck to the table with a thin layer of syrup no one had bothered to clean. The whole place reeked of cheap beer, too many perfumes, and nostalgia that hung in the air like smoke. It was warm in a way Harry hadn’t expected, cozy, worn, real. Not like the glossy, curated night out he sometimes tagged along for. This was something else. This was people being themselves.

Harry, pressed to the edge of the booth, wondered if he belonged in this picture.

Zayn was already comfortably nestled against Liam’s side, their legs touching under the table, fingers brushing, heads angled toward each other like there was no one else in the room. There was something magnetic about them.

“This palace has been our Friday night tradition,” Zayn explained, voice lazy with fondness. “Karaoke, cheap beer, and emotional vulnerability via pop songs.”

“Last week he made me sing Shallow.” Louis added with a dramatic sigh. “In front of a bunch of hen party girls.”

“And you liked it,” Zayn said, absolutely beaming.

“I carried you.” Louis muttered, but his eyes were fond.

Harry chuckled, the sound getting stuck somewhere in his chest. His eyes lingered on Louis longer than they should have.

“You in?” Liam nudged Harry’s side gently.

“Why not.” Harry shrugged, the nerves fluttering just beneath his skin

The others took turns first. Zayn and Louis belted out a ridiculous, high energy rendition of a Backstreet Boys song that got the whole room clapping. Zayn and Louis could actually sing, and Louis made the whole bar fall in love with him when he added his charisma to their performance.

Liam serenaded Zayn with “You’re Beautiful” and Zayn pretended to swoon dramatically, sliding further into his seat, hand to his heart. Louis made exaggerated gagging noises, but his grin betrayed him. Harry watched them all, laughing, sipping his beer, pretending he wasn’t hyper aware of the weight in his chest.

When it was Harry’s turn, he hesitated just a moment too long. The karaoke machine scrolled endlessly with song options, and for a second he was tempted to pick something silly. Safe. Something that wouldn’t make his heart race or give much away.

But then he saw Louis laughing at something Zayn whispered. Head thrown back. Eyes crinkled. Joy etched into the lines of his face like a sketch Harry wanted to trace. It hit him hard, how beautiful he was, how completely unbothered, how alive.

Before he could overthink it, his fingers typed in the song already echoing in his chest.

He walked up to the mic under the lazy spin of a disco ball, purple lights painting soft shadows across his face. His palms were sweating. His throat felt tight. But when he caught Louis’ gaze, he felt himself calm down.

The opening chords hit like a memory. Gentle and familiar.

“Wise men say, only fools rush in…”

Harry’s voice was soft at first, tentative. Not perfect, but honest. He searched for Louis in the crowd. Louis had turned to face him fully, brow slightly raised in amused curiosity, and surprise.

“But I can’t help falling in love with you…”

Harry didn’t blink. Didn't look away.

He sang the song like it was a secret. A folded note passed in class with shaking hands. It was more than a karaoke bit, more than a sweet song to sing. For Harry, it was a confession of something he couldn’t quite understand. It was his heart wrapped in melody.

“Shall I stay? Would it be a sin…

If I can’t help falling in love with you?”

It felt like the noise in the bar dimmed just a little. Not completely, but enough for the melody to wrap itself around his voice. Around the weight of what he hadn’t said aloud. Not everyone noticed the change, but one of them did.

Harry caught the way Zayn’s expression changed, the way his eyes narrowed just a touch, observant.

Liam nudged him, whispering something.

Louis was still watching him. Smiling. Harry could see the shining blue eyes, the smile was fond.

Like it was cute. Like Harry was charming. Like it was nothing more than a sweet cover of a classic love song.

“Like a river flowing surely to the sea…

Darling so it goes, some things are meant to be…”

Harry’s eyes softened. He thought about what it might feel like to hold Louis’ hand. To laugh at his jokes, to wake up to that stupid bedhead and mischievous glint.

Harry’s voice trembled slightly on that last note. He wasn’t a professional singer, but there was something about that song that turned his voice from shy to sure.

He thought about the way Louis had looked at him when they first met. It was really just a couple hours ago? Like Louis asked so many questions about Harry’s life, like he wanted to know more. Harry wanted to give him everything.

“Take my hand, take my whole life too..”

The crowd was swaying now, some singing softly along. A girl near the bar wiped her eyes. A couple kissed with smiles on their faces. Others closed their eyes and took deep breaths.

Harry didn’t see any of it. He just saw Louis.

For I can’t help falling in love with you.”

The last note hung in the air, trembling.

Applause burst out like fireworks. Someone at the bar whistled. A stranger clapped Harry on the shoulder and handed him a free drink. Harry barely registered any of it.

Harry ducked his head, cheeks burning. He walked back to the booth, heart pounding, ears ringing.

“You’ve got a voice, Styles. Didn’t see that coming.” Louis said, clapping him on the back.

“Thanks.” Harry tried to smile.

“Bit of a romantic, huh?” Zayns said, watching him too closely, sipping his drink too casually.

“I guess I am.” Harry shrugged, forcing his voice steady.

“Don’t worry.” Louis grinned. “I’ll balance us out. I’m thinking of some moody Arctic Monkeys next.”

Harry laughed, too loud, too quick. He took a sip of his drink to stop himself from saying something stupid.

Because the truth was…

The song wasn't just romantic. It had been for Louis.

Zayn didn’t say anything else. But when Harry glanced his way again, he saw it... There was something knowing there. Something that seemed a lot like sympathy.

Harry looked away, heart beating too loud in his chest, already too full for someone who didn’t even see what had just happened.

He hadn’t fallen.

He had leapt.

And Louis hadn't even noticed the landing.

Later, after more songs, more laughter, and one too many rounds of whatever brightly colored cocktails the bar was serving, Zayn and Liam slipped off toward the dance floor, if it could even be called that. It was really just a corner of the bar where the tile floor was sticky with spilled drinks and glittered faintly under the lazy spin of the disco ball. They didn’t care. Zayn dragged Liam with a mischievous grin, and Liam went willingly, hands already on Zayn’s waist before they even made it to the center.

That left Harry and Louis in the booth, side by side.

The music thumped around them, muffled slightly by the high backed leather that curved around their shoulders. Voices and laughter echoed from nearby tables, but here, in the warmth of the booth and the soft flicker of tea lights, it felt like a world apart. A little quieter. A little more personal.

Harry’s shoulder brushed against Louis’, close enough that he could feel the heat through layers of fabric. He didn’t move away. Neither did Louis.

Conversation drifted easily between them, about music, of course, but also about favorite late night snacks (Louis was a crisps at midnight kind of guy, while Harry confessed his weakness for toast and jam), and the odd charm of old bars like this one. Louis talked with his hands sometimes, quick little flicks and gestures that made Harry want to watch him more than listen. And Harry did listen, but it was like trying to hear through fog, his focus kept drifting to the way Louis smiled at him without seeming to realise, or how his eyelashes curled just slightly when he blinked slowly between drinks.

Louis laughed easily, too, like it didn’t cost him anything. It made Harry want to keep saying stupid things just to hear it again.

“So,” Louis said, idly twisting the straw in his drink. “You always sing songs like that? Love songs that make people blush into their beers?”

“Not always.” Harry ducked his head, smiling into the rim of his glass.

“But sometimes?” Louis nudged him lightly with his shoulder. “Come on, Styles. Don't be shy now. That was a swoon worthy performance. Nearly fell off my chair.”

Harry swallowed. His tongue felt too big in his mouth.

“It’s a good song,” he said lamely.

“You sang like you meant it.” Louis turned to look at him fully.

“I did.” The words came out before Harry could stop them. Quiet and honest. Maybe too honest.

Louis didn’t say anything right away. Just watched him with those sharp, soft eyes. He wasn’t teasing, he was pensive.

Louis leaned back, stretching out his legs under the table.

“I have never really believed in love at first sight,” he said casually, like they were just talking about the weather.

“Yeah. Me neither.” Harry gave a weak laugh, forcing his gaze down to the condensation on his glass.

It was a lie.

Because he did believe in it.

Or maybe not in the fairytale kind, the lightning bolt to the heart kind. But tonight? Tonight he walked into a bar thinking he would just tag along for drinks with his best friend, and Louis had looked at him and smiled. And suddenly the floor didn’t feel so steady under Harry’s feet anymore.

Because tonight, Harry sang a love song for someone who didn't even realise he was the muse.

“Hey.” Louis nudged him again, gentler this time. “You alright?”

“Yeah. Just tired.” Harry nodded, a little too quickly.

It wasn’t a total lie. Emotion had taken up residence somewhere deep in his chest, curling and expanding in ways that made him feel off balance. Tired, yes. But also full. Full of something unspoken and raw.

Louis looked at him a second longer, then smiled.

“Sorry for the heavy conversation so sudden… You’ve got one of those faces, you know? The quiet kind that make people want to spill secrets.”

Harry laughed softly, lips parting on a breath that almost carried something more.

“You are the first person who has ever told me that,” he said instead.

“Lucky me, then,” Louis murmured, but it wasn’t flirtatious. Just warm. Fond. Like the start of a friendship.

Harry’s fingers itched to reach out. To touch Louis’ wrist where it rested on the table, to test if the skin there was as warm as his smile.

Instead, he took another sip of his drink.

Louis didn’t get it. Not really.

Maybe Harry was just another boy with a soft heart and too many feelings.

“God, I’m getting old. My back's going to seize up just from sitting here. I might be all hunched and shit.” Louis stretched his arms overhead and groaned softly.

Harry smiled, letting the sound of Louis' voice pull him back into the moment.

“You are in your 20’s. Not old at all. And are you really allowed to say that when you are prettier than half the people in this bar?” Harry said without thinking. Louis’ eyes got wider for a moment before he smiled.

“Flattery? Dangerous game, Styles.” Louis snorted.

Harry didn’t reply. Just smiled again. Soft. Small.

And Harry knew, with a quiet ache, that he was already in too deep.
