"Goodnight, Molly," I said as I turned my lamp off.
"Goodnight, Nick," Molly replied as she turned off her phone. "Even environmentalists need their rest."
I had trouble falling asleep that night. All of the memories of the day ran through my head. Jeremy had taken me out for boba, but neither of us even liked boba. I chuckled.
Jeremy had talked about wanting a clean slate, for everything to be okay again. I wished it was that simple. I wished I wasn't in the situation I was in. I had to pull this elaborate con just to pay my dad's debts. Yeah, sure, family sticks together but...I just wish I could do normal kid things.
I had come into the Thompson family just looking for money, but I'd made a real family too. And...I wished I didn't...because when I have to betray them and pull the trigger, it will..it'll be hard for me. I've become attached.
I have Molly, my best friend. Molly is like a sister to me. Molly had brought me into the Volunteer Squad and showed me around. Molly and I shared a room. When Molly needed me, I was there for her. Whether something happened at school or just teenage girl problems, we were there for each other.
There was also Jeremy. When I first walked into the Thompson house, I had a feeling that Jeremy would be iffy about me. Did I blame him? Absolutely not. I just barged into their house but they "didn't get the memo." And was I wrong with that gut feeling? Also no.
Liz was also iffy at first but had warmed up to me. I helped out in Liz's restaurant. Liz taught me how to cook and make pasta, so we were definitely bonding.
Ed had taken me in from day one with open arms. He was the "heart of the family" and always a fun person to be around. He was a great dad.
Now, I had changed into a whole different person just for some con. I wished I could...say something. But, with as much leverage as I thought I had, I was actually quite powerless in the grand scheme of the world.
Jeremy had started off being rude to me, but...he's changed. He's started to accept me into the family and make amends. He was the one to apologize for his actions. So maybe there is some good in him. I'd just have to see.
