Work Text:
Steve took a sip of his stale coffee. In front of him was a pile of documents staring at him. Documents with the budgeting numbers for the new financial year - because, yes, this place didn't run itself - like General Vanth always said. And invoices, so many invoices... He flipped through them.
63'000 gold coins for food.
What the hell are they eating? Deverelli rotisserie chicken stuffed with oranges?
34'000 gold coins for uniform purchases.
Well, sure, if they are ripping their clothes instead of hemming like everybody else.
25'000 gold coins for new training mats.
Ugh... he didn't want to think about the old ones... Not just stained with blood, but dripping with it.
And 520 gold coins for new and reinforced armoires in the cadet rooms.
Why? Did the dragons put armoirs on fire when they were angry with their riders?
With a deep sigh, he looked out of the window. From his office he could barely see the flight field. There were several majestic dragons standing with their riders. And at the very front stood the most beautiful dragon he had been lucky enough to catch glimpses of over the past three years: Oreo. He wished he could take a closer look at the dragon. But that was more than unlikely. The fact alone that General Vanth had even told him the dragon's name was a miracle in itself.
What wouldn't he do to stand next to those riders. He imagined himself being a rider every day... Flying in the sky. Feeling that powerful dragon under him. That connection. And just feeling free from the tediousness of his work day.
Reality snapped him out of his musings. Suddenly he saw a burst of flame. Where a cadet had been standing just a moment ago, there was now only rising smoke.
Never mind, this job was just fine for him after all.
