Work Text:

 Sea Fairy loved the moon.

All that could occupy her mind was her graceful light. Every time she looked at the night, it was not the starry sky that got her attention, unlike most cookies. It was her moon.

It's what motivated her. It's what kept her going. Sea Fairy remembered when she spent months feeling depressed and hopeless, wondering if it was even worth being immortal, but the moon saved her. The moon gave her meaning to this worthless life.

She woke up every day to see the moon's face, the moon's long, starry hair, the moon's soft, dreamy voice. Oh, how Sea Fairy longed to even hold her moon's hand.

She had been told by the other guardians to not let her "obsession" get in the way of her duties, but how could she not? Every time she looked at her moon, her light of her life, she saw the reason why she was given a sentience.

It was to be with her moon, her precious and beautiful Moonlight, who shined even more brightly than the element of fire. Her eyes were more electric than the sky god who loved the lightning. Her hair blew more gracefully in the wind than the wind element. She was dedicated, but unlike the frost's dedication, hers was more passionate, and much more powerful. Oh, how Sea Fairy could stare at her stunning and breathtaking moon.

Sea Fairy hated many things in life. She hated how her heart could only make room for the slumbering moon. She hated how the gem mermaids and the other cookies of the sea meant nothing to her. She hated how she was chained to duties, duties that she never enjoyed fulfilling. She hated how she was only the ocean, unable to reach what she wanted.

Oh, how she hated being the guardian of the ocean.

Her waves reached for the moon, pleading to touch what they desired, but never grew far enough.

Sea Fairy knew she couldn't drop her sword, or she would turn to ice. She wouldn't be able to see her slumbering moon ever again until another sea cookie would be able to save her.

A sea cookie who would be worthless to her.

If only her heart could muster more space for the cookies who admired and looked up to her. If only she was as inspiring as the sea cookies saw her. If only the legends of her being a generous and fair sea fairy were true.

She was truly apathetic to other cookies, wasn't she? She didn't deserve to be a guardian, not when she couldn't even guard herself, the ocean.

One night, Sea Fairy was admiring her meaning, her soulmate's beauty. Oh, how she loved Moonlight. She could stare into her eyes until dawn. Until the sun rose, and blocked Sea Fairy from the sight of her love.

It was pathetic, really. All Sea Fairy lived for was for one cookie. If anything were to happen to that one cookie, Sea Fairy wouldn't be able to bear the guilt. She should be the one to sacrifice her life to Moonlight, just like how Frilled Jellyfish bore the attack of a land cookie to save White Pearl, who had transformed into Black Pearl. Such a shame, it was, that Sea Fairy couldn't care enough to save her own cookies. Her own children. Those were her children, were they not? All the legends called every cookie of the sea her child. If only Sea Fairy truly saw them that way. No cookie would be able to fix the void in her heart, that voice that would only be able to fit Moonlight.

Sea Fairy loved singing to the moon. In fact, her singing reflected her love for her moon. To Moonlight, her end of the dark tunnel. The one who saved her from doom and despair. If she was awake, maybe she was listening? And when Sea Fairy was sleeping, maybe she could see how empty Sea Fairy's dreams were without the celestial.

If only she could hold Moonlight's hands in her own with no sword in hand, no curse ready to freeze her into ice the moment she let go. If only Moonlight could hold her sea with love and affection, and with no guilt of the deserted City of Wizards. If only she could take away all the pain from Moonlight and transport it to herself instead.

Stormbringer would laugh at her feelings, wouldn't she? That's what happened, when Sea Fairy was stupid and still trusted others with her feelings. When she was young and her heart hadn't yet been replaced with a broken abyss, one that wished for the moon's rays to fill in up, instead of any other love.

"You can't love another guardian! Especially as a guardian yourself! It's distracting!"

Ahh. That statement was made back when all the guardians actually cared about upholding the cycle of nature. That was back when most of the guardians were new, and had received a sentience. Of course, Sea Fairy and Millennial Tree were the exceptions. They had been born as soon as the Sugar Swan created herself and Earthbread, inventing the existence of time and the sea. Her.

For a long time, the sea remained stagnant. What was the reason to show herself when she couldn't find a reason herself?

Then the wizards made Moonlight. Her Moonlight. The one who made her rise up from her stillness. She was who made the sea rise. There were legends about it. Sea cookies (her children) talked about it every day, praising the moon for awakening the sea.

Sea Fairy could never stop thinking about her love, the love that Stormbringer called “obsession”. She needed to reach her moon, and she would do whatever it took to avoid getting corrupted and losing her only sliver of worth in this cruel, immortal life.

Moonlight was her bringer of happiness and her piercer of darkness, nobody else.

Moonlight would be the one to save her from a depressing, endless cycle of hopelessness and loss.

And she would be the very one to cause the sea to lose her life in the only way possible.

By dropping her sword.

As Sea Fairy turned to ice, her hands reached desperately for the moon, hoping that one day, her prayers would be answered, and when she awoke, it would not be a mere sea cookie by her side.

It would be the moon, as Sea Fairy loved the moon.
