Chapter 1: Chasing Shadows: A Flight into the Unknown

Chapter Text

Poe’s POV:
The clouds covered the sky in a blanketed style almost satisfyingly. Each cloud curled into each other almost like the ruffles in blankets. I stared up to the fading sky as the sunset started to glow a pastel pink. It was beautiful. Almost romantic really. I was sitting at my window with a brown wooden chair, that's normally for my desk, pulled up so I could ponder on ideas for my new mystery novel. I had to step up my mystery writing just for Ranpo. He always figured them out so easily to the point I felt like a toddler writing it. Even through a single sentence he could figure it out in seconds. It was irritating. Almost intimidating.

The night sky started to close in, leaving only the moonlight shining through my window, lighting up my bedroom. The rest of my room was pitch-black, but it didn't peeve me much. Stars started to scatter over the sky in a beautiful pattern as I started to connect them together slowly. Tracing it with my eyes going from one star to the next.

I didn't even know how much time had passed until my phone pinged with a notification. I considered leaving it for a second, but I was frightened it could be important considering my line of work. I got up from my chair and walked over to where my phone lay neatly next to my piece of paper that was completely empty with my lack of ideas. I picked up my phone with a sigh and the phone screen lit up also lightening my face up with a white light.

The name ‘Edogawa Ranpo’ spread across my screen with a picture of him and Karl in a circle beside it. ‘Open message’ was displayed beneath the name, and I instantly clicked on the notification and the text message appeared on my screen.

“I’m bored.”

I scoffed. This was clearly an unimportant message but now I’m here I might as well answer it. I typed the message “Hello Ranpo. What do you need?” and pressed send without a second thought. The words ‘read’ appeared below my message and the three dots started to jump to signal that he was typing a reply.

“Come to the agency.”

I sighed at the response before another message appeared below.

“Bring snacks.”

Great. I started to rummage through my cupboards looking for the emergency snacks I keep incase of situations like this one. I picked up a bag and put all the snacks inside, grabbed my coat and made sure Karl was on my shoulder before heading out of the door to head to the train station to head to the ADA to visit Ranpo.

Time passes, and Poe arrives at the ADA.

As I walked into the crowded, loud office I could see everyone turning to the door cautiously like they were detecting the danger and getting prepared to fight. As soon as everyone realised it was me, they untensed and relaxed. “Poe! Welcome back!” Kunikida said politely. I nervously smiled at him “I hope it's okay I’m here.”
“You’re welcome here whenever you want Poe.” replied Kunikida and everyone smiled in agreement and to reassure me that it was okay. I smiled and turned my attention towards Ranpo. He sat with his legs resting on his desk with a bored expression on his face. “Poe-kun finally!” His expression turned bright and shone a toothy smile at me and I smiled sweetly back. I couldn’t tell what this feeling was, but it felt warm and comforting.

His attention turned to my bag and as I noticed his eyes drift, I followed them down to the same bag he was looking at. I lifted the bag to Ranpo and handed him the bag of snacks he had been so desperately waiting for. His eyes lit up as the bag entered his hands, he took the bag away so quickly it was like a flash of light before it disappeared into his hands as he dug through it. I watched him dig through in admiration before he pulled out his favourite flavour of lollipop. Strawberry. I saw him rip off the wrapper with such intensity and put it in his mouth.

As he made eye contact with me, I quickly realised that I had been staring the whole time. My cheeks blushed a light pink and I heard a quiet muffled giggle behind me, and I almost crawled inside of myself and nested there forever. I heard a yelp of pain which I guess was the person who laughed getting hit by someone around him. Karl started to chitter beside my ear after my blush died down a little and I itched behind his ears and heard a purr come from him.

As I diverted my attention back to Ranpo I noticed that he had been staring at me with his bright emerald eyes twinkling in the lights overhead. Oh my he was beautiful- Wait. Did I actually just say he was beautiful? Oh my goodness. I can’t do this. I need to get out of here. Without even thinking I turned around and dashed out of the office. I heard a muffled “Poe!” from behind me from Ranpo but I was so distracted I completely tuned it out and continued down the stairs, through the cafe and out the door.
