Space is big. It is Mind-bogglingly huge.
So for a ship to drop out of warp within human-eyesight distance of another, generally it is assumed to have happened by design, rather than by accident.
So here I am, in my little beat up runabout that must have been built before I was even born, just hanging in space, at a lagrange point of an out of the way planetoid. Still in strong subspace signal reach of a little federation way station I like - this thing doesn't have a replicator, and a girls' gotta eat - and the ships' sensors tell me that a ship has just appeared, like... way too close to me.
Looking out of the actual window and seeing not just it but the people backlit in windows, close. And, ugh. It's... them.
Most ship-buffs would recognize the Galaxy class. All would recognize the historic ones, like the pair of exceptionally-still-in-operation-oh-my-god-when-are-those-going-to-be-retired designs that are the Miranda and Excelsior classes, many would also recognize the long-decommissioned (Original with red bussrds and refit) Constitution class, though on that one, only because of the Original (in original and refit design) and the -A of the USS Enterprise shipname lineage. Not so many would the Nebula, fewer still would realize the Soyuz isn't a Miranda class with extra pieces, but its own ship class with just, like, nigh-identical externals.
I'm a ship buff. I won't even need to see the pennants and the paint job to distinguish a Melbourne from a Sutherland subtype Nebula.
I know all of Starfleets designs, I know most of the Federations' civilian designs, and I even know the classified ships of Starfleet Intelligence, which do their best but don't quite match the mainstream ships they're mimicking - they have their own version of a runabout that only looks like the Danube Class, for instance.
This, is not a civilian ship. This, is not a Starfleet ship - and by that I also mean, not starfleet Intelligence.
Yet it does look, kind of, like a Cheyenne Class, if you squint. Or ignore the third pair of Nacelles mounted either side of the rear part of the hull, exactly between the upper and lower pairs. And that the hull is a deep black, rather than the usual option of either duck-egg-grey whatever starfleet call it, or the aztec greys or whatever starfleet call that one - I've seen the enterprise, pre and post repaint between those. ones slightly blue-er.
This ship is painted such a deep black, almost camouflaged against the backdrop of space... except it's between me and the planetoid, and very damn close, hance seeing it. Also, who the hell has lit windows on a ship that's clearly meant to be some kind of visually stealthed?
Fah. I'ts... S.H.I.E.L.D. Strategic Homeworld Intervention Blah bloody Blah. They're insane.
... Welp, it's not like I wasn't expecting them.
I put up with the manhandling. I glared when the black hood - like seriously, it did NOTHING to stop me seeing the corridors of the ship - was removed and then the pair of suits (seriously they're dressed like its the early 21st century WHO WEARS SUITS?) stepped back behind the forcefield... Rude...
"What's your name."
"... Skye."
Many... years have passed.
It's been, a wild ride. Turns out that the Romulan Old Guard that were behind the war against pre-Federation Earth had stuck around, infiltrated SHIELD and stuff. Fought them. Beat them. Then, my long search for my parents? Yeah, not good. And wacky revelations involving them, yay I say sarcastically.
Boyfriend died. decided to leave. Wandered, investigated some nutjobs, And now? NOW I'm on the other side of the damn galaxy, stuck with a starfleet crew and... God I wasn't much of a fan of starfleet before, now it's... worse.
And worst of all?
I've met this captain before, before she was a Captain.
"Agent Johnson." Captain Janeway spoke with a croak. Glaring.
"Not an Agent, anymore." I left, like, after my boyfriend died to destroy that Borg thing that tried to mind control me. But I'm not explaining that. "It's just Daisy, now."
"So you weren't aboard to spy for... Shield...?" the derision there. Yeah, Shield never made friends when they'd step in on things, just because it's barely holding onto existence after the discovery that it had been partly run for centuries by the damn Romulans! ...
Dammit, I'm going to have to make use of my technically legal cover Alias as a starfleet officer (It's even at the rank of Commander - three gold pips, not two and one black like Cavit was), because damn I didn't like that this woman was given a command and now her XO is dead. Also-also, now we're in the damn delta quadrant.
Not looking forward to reuniting with the extended family. Nope.
Fuck. I hate that the borg are the result of-
