Work Text:

“We’ve got a runner!” McGee informed through the comms, as he comes running from the side of the house, gun in hand. a silver Porsche goes zooming past, already on the main road by the time Gibbs and the others get in their cars and follows.

A second later a black blur goes past them, “I’ve got him” Shadow calmly replies.

“Come on!” Gibbs raced to get to his car, climbing into the driver's side as Tony dives in beside him.

“You think one day we’ll get a calm arrest?” Tony asks as he slams his door closed.

Gibbs quickly taking off, wheels squealing against the road. McGee and Ziva takes the other car, with Ziva at the wheel. It took a moment for McGee to realize what that means for him.

“Oh no” McGee groans, Ziva sends him an amused look before taking off.

“McGee! Traffic cams!”

“Already on it, boss.” McGee replies, tapping away at his laptop with one hand as he holds on for dear life with the other.

“He's heading for the bridge, going northbound,” Shadow informed them calmly.

Wind clawed at her hood, her cape whipped around behind her. Swerving past cars, going way over the speed limit, ignoring the honks and shouts of angry pedestrians, she stayed in pursuit.

“We need to stop him before he goes over the bridge. If he does we’ll lose him” Tony informs.

‘Not necessarily’ Shadow thought but kept the thought to herself, out loud she replied, “Gibbs take a turn up here, cut him off at the next intersection before he can get onto the bridge.”

“Shadow, you're coming up on a busy intersection” McGee warns.

“I know”

She saw it before they did. A semi truck pulls out into the intersection, slow and cumbersome, unaware of the danger heading for it. The Porsche easily sped around it. The truck was now completely unavoidable.

“Shadow!” McGee calls out in alarm as he sees a semi pulling out in front of her.

Ziva lets out a small gasp.

They knew Shadow had no time to stop nor turn safely. Ignoring their calls she automatically brings her body close to her bike, kicking out while turning sharply to the left. Sparks fly as metal scraped across asphalt, the sound like nails on a chalkboard, making her wince at the loud noise as she slid under the truck. Her cape brushes up against one of the wheels, lucky that it didn’t get caught underneath the wheel. Her head comes inches from touching the underside of the truck. It only lasts a few seconds before she cleared the other side. Twisting sharply, she righted the bike seamlessly, not even wavering. Even though it only lasted a few seconds, by the time she clears it there's no sign of the Porsche.

“McGee!” she called into her comms.

“Talk to me. Which way did he go?”

“Uh east! He's going east!”

“Got it” she turned down the next road, quickly catching sight of the Porsche.

“And uh Shadow?”

“yeah?”

“That thing you just did? That slide under a truck thing? Never do that again.”

She smirked despite herself. “Tell the guy in the Porsche to slow down and I’ll think about it.”

“Shadow report!” Gibbs orders.

“Still on him. Looks like he's heading for the docks.”

“How has he not crashed, he's going over a hundred?” Tony asks, incredulously.

“I can go faster” Shadow mutters.

Twisting the throttle she puts on a burst of speed. Up ahead there's construction, new pavement being put down. The Porsche driver ignores the signs, crashing through the barricades and into the liquid concrete, instantly slowing down but still going. Looking around she grins as she spots a ramp of sorts made out of big metal pipes going over the construction zone.

“Shadow, there's construction..”

“I know” she interrupts.

“Why is she not slowing down?” She hears McGee mutter to Ziva.

There was a sudden intake of breath as McGee realized her intentions “Shadow don't..!”

“Too late” she interrupts with a hint of a laugh in her voice.

A moment later she bounds up the slope before suddenly flying through the air, landing with a hard thud on the other side, she kept control.

“You're insane” McGee mutters with awe.

Ziva was speechless, “she jumped it” she says flabbergasted, eyes wide.

“I saw”

“I heard it. I kinda wish that I didn’t, that sounded painful. Tell me, did we get that on the dash cam?” They ignored Tony.

“Ziva! The road!” McGee suddenly shouted.

Ziva quickly corrected herself, muttering a soft sorry.

Drawing a knife, Shadow gets ready to slash a tire as she gets closer to the Porsche. She successfully slashes a tire before the driver's window suddenly goes down and a hand comes out, holding a gun.

She has a split second to realize, “shit!” she curses as the person unloads his gun on her.

She quickly pulls back, weaving and waving trying to avoid the bullets.

Over comms she hears Gibbs “Shadow! Talk to me! What’s happening?!”

However, before she can answer, one manages to hit her front tire, making her lose control. With a sharp grunt, she hits a bunch of wooden crates stacked up next to some metal containers, hard. Her breath gets knocked out of her. Over comms they heard the talltail sounds of bullets being fired shortly followed by the sound of wood breaking loudly and a sharp grunt of pain.

“Shadow? Shadow, come in!” McGee’s voice crackled through her earpiece, tight with panic.

Nothing but static.

He shared a quick look of concern with Ziva. On Tony's end he did the same with Gibbs. Ziva’s knuckles went white around the steering wheel.

“She’s not answering.”

Tony’s voice came over the comms next, unusually serious. “Tell me someone has eyes on her.”

“Someone talk to me. What happened?” Gibbs orders

“Shots fired. I think she crashed” McGee says, his voice tense.

“Does someone have eyes on her?!” Gibbs barks through the comms.

“We're pulling up now” Ziva says in lue of an answer.

They pull up to see Shadow pulling herself out of the wreckage of the crates. Before looking up and then suddenly rolling out of the way of a metal container that was balancing precariously on the metal container that she had crashed into, gravity taking over, crashing right where she had been. Sending bits and pieces of wood everywhere.

“Shadow!” McGee called out as they pulled up.

“I'm fine. continuing on foot.” she says, her words clipped.

They watched her climb up on top of a metal container before running off after the car. Ziva stepped onto the gas pedal sending McGee back into his seat with a small yelp, that he will deny he ever made.

Shadow’s feet barely make any noise as she runs and jumps across shipping containers. It wasn’t long before she spotted the silver Porsche.

“I see him, looks like he's heading for the boats, on the northside.”

“Got it, Ziva’s blocking him in now.”

Just after McGee says that, Shadow sees a car screeching to a halt, blocking one of the exits. Gibbs comes up behind him, getting out of the car, the others follow, all with their guns out and pointed at the Porsche.

There were several shouts of “federal agents!” and “step out of the vehicle!”

From her vantage point she can see the driver looking around frantically, looking for a way out.

There was someone else in the passenger seat, “suspect isn’t alone. Also armed” she calmly informs, seeing the gun that's hidden in his jacket.

For a moment it looks like they accept their fate, to give up, but of course they don't. Instead the driver floors it, Tony letting out a small curse as they jump back into their cars. The Porsche swerves around a few shipping containers before coming to a halt, the two suspects bolt from the car going separate ways.

“Suspects on foot. Ones heading for the boats. The other heading for Warehouse 9” Shadow says into her comms, not even sounding out of breath, still running over five containers high of shipping crates.

Up ahead, where the containers stop she jumps down, landing in a neat roll. She continues chasing the driver, he’s the one they are after. She easily catches up, tackling him to the ground. The gun skitters a few feet away.

“Stay down” she growls at the driver, pulling his arms behind his back, face down. Some blood gets on him from the road burn on her hand. She ignores the stinging pain.

“Lost eyes on suspect two” Tony's voice comes through, sounding breathless.

Reaching into her bag she grabs a pair of handcuffs, placing it onto the driver's wrists.

She reaches up with her bloody hand and presses her comm, “drivers down. Not far from where he left…” stops as she hears a small ting of metal scraping softly against concrete.

“Shadow!” Gibbs barks in her ear.

She quickly turns and ducks in time to avoid a metal pipe that goes swinging over her head. She rolls, coming up behind the attacker, who spun swinging the makeshift bat again. She lets out a small grunt of pain as she blocks the hit with her already sprained wrist, ignoring the pain, she elbows him hard in the gut.

Over comms she can hear Gibbs ordering the others to find her. McGee responded with her location.

He grunts but doesn’t go down, instead he swings again. She catches it in her hand, pulling it out of his grip and tossing it aside. It lands with a clang, rolling away. He looks from where it landed and back to her, taking a few steps away. With a grin she spins, kicking his feet out from under him. He lands with a thud, stunned, but still conscious, the breath taken from him. The others show up, guns drawn and pointed at the two suspects, just in time to witness this. Shadow didn’t look up from where she stood over the second suspect, still not out of breath, blood slowly dripping from the fingers of her injured hand.

“Secure them” Gibbs orders unnecessary, holstering his gun, as Tony is already moving to put cuffs on the second person.

She backs up a few paces, to give them room and to have an eye on the whole situation. Tony quickly frisks the passenger, handing the gun to Ziva for her to put into an evidence bag. McGee, with gloves on that he got from his back pocket, bent to retrieve the makeshift weapon the man had used, a bloody handprint on one side of it and puts it into another evidence bag that he just had on him.

“You're lucky she caught you,” Tony said as he stood the passenger up, face grim. “Because if I had to chase you, I'd be a lot more annoyed about it.” he growls, shoving the man forward taking him to the car.

Ziva did the same with the driver, but in a different car.

She heard and sensed Gibbs presence, “I’m fine” she says before he says anything.

“I know” he replies simply, giving her a once over.

Back at NCIS

Shadow stands slightly off to the side, leaning a little on the wall next to Ziva’s desk. Her hand’s bandaged up, some red slightly poking through. She’s also holding a portable ice pack that she pulled out from her bag against her wrist.

“How is it that you crashed and still outran them?” Tony asks, leaning back into his chair, eating chinese, “and how is it that you weren't even out of breath?!” he adds on.

“She's got some mad skills.” McGee says, giving her an impressed look as he walks by, sitting down behind his desk.

Ziva laughs and gives her a look, like she's reassessing her.

She senses Gibbs and Vance walking up behind her.

“You think that's cool? Please, this is like a normal Tuesday for me.”

“What is the coolest and most dangerous thing you've ever done?” Tony asks.

Before she can answer, Vance clears his throat, getting their attention. “Good work out there, you were able to get the boss of the Russian mob and his right hand man today.”

“Shadow did most of it.”

“I'm sure that if I wasn’t there, you still would have been able to arrest them.” Shadow deadpan. “Although it probably would’ve taken you longer to do so.” she says jokingly.

Vance gave a small, amused huff through his nose, glancing briefly at Gibbs.

“I see sarcasm isn’t dulled by adrenaline or blood loss.”

Shadow smirked.

Vance turned his attention back to Shadow, all traces of humor leaving, “we’ve had our eye on these guys for a while. This takedown? It wont go unnoticed.”

“Figures. Let them come. They’re not the worst I face.” she replied without fear.

Vance stared at her for a moment before nodding and exchanging a glance with Gibbs.

“We’ll debrief in the morning. Everyone, go home.” he stared a little longer at Gibbs and Shadow.

Gibbs grunted in reluctant agreement. Shadow didn’t say anything.

“So, Shadow, about that ‘coolest and most dangerous’ story…”

She quirked a brow. “Now?”

“It’s either that or I ask Ziva about Mossad again, and we know how well that ends.”

“I throw a knife at you,” Ziva deadpanned, sipping her tea.

“Exactly.” Tony pointed at her. “See? Why not spare me the stitches and tell us your war story?”

She smirks, shaking her head, “Sorry Tony. That's a story for another time. I've got to go do my rounds.”

“What really? You're going back out there injured?” McGee asks, surprised.

“Crime never stops. Unfortunately.” She says, opening a portal.

“I'll see you guys tomorrow, or maybe the next day.”
