Chapter Text

My room was dark, and oddly cold considering I’d only put the fireplace out earlier, the frigid air was coming through an open window, funny I thought I’d closed that before I went to bed. I sat up in the soft cloud that was my bed, peering through the curtains I saw someone standing over my vanity. Father? No, he’s too busy running a kingdom, so who was this mysterious person. They turned as I peeled back the silky blankets; they had short fluffy hair that swayed with the movement. They looked like they might run at any moment, so I slowly moved out of the warm blankets. They made a move for the window.
“Wait!” my voice was a whisper in the darkness, if my guards heard me, they’d come in and arrest whoever this mysterious person was, but they didn’t seem dangerous, in fact they hesitated in their escape unsure of what to do. “I won’t turn you in, who are you”
Slowly I made my way toward them until we stood barely the vanities distance between us, they didn’t seem any older than me, in fact maybe only 17, how could someone so young be stealing, stealing from royalty on top of it.
“what’s your name?” I asked slowly, their eyes were bright in the dim light of the room, a pale colour blue, maybe green, their face was smooth and freckled contrasting their pale eyes.
Once again, they hesitated unsure of whether to answer but finally, they spoke, “Wren” it was quiet but an answer, nonetheless. Wren it was cute, and fitting, Wren looked back at the window, they wanted to leave, what did they steal exactly? “And if you refer to me, later use ‘they’”
I nodded; that was the least I could do. Their fingers had a few rings on them but in their hands lay a compass, my compass, that’s what they’d come for, why? Sure, the compass was a magical artifact but all it did was point to whatever the holder desires most, I mainly used it to help me make decisions, for any artifact to be stealing worthy that one comes falls to the bottom of the list.
“Why are you here Wren?” I tried to be as soft as possible, but the matter still stood, they were a stranger in my room holding my compass, just because they were cute didn’t mean they would get away with theft, but that also didn’t mean I needed to call my guards in, I could handle it on my own right?
Wren looked scared, like just by asking the question they would be taken away, a single ring fell from one of their fingers, it clinked against the wooden floorboards. That little sound made Wren jump they hit back into my armoire causing a much louder clang to follow. I giggled a that, even their quick clumsiness was cute.
“Your Highness, Master Caspian,” a knock sounded on my door followed by a guard’s call, “are you alright in there?”
“Yes, yes I’m quite alright.” I bent down and picked up the ring Wren dropped; a feather was carved into the dark metal. More quietly I turned to Wren, a charming smile on my face. “And I believe you dropped this”
My offering hand met no one as it was extended to the open air, I was alone in the room, my compass missing, holding a cute thief’s ring. Nothing in front of me except an open window.
