Work Text:
Hinata is not sure how it started but Kageyama has started walking him to his bike.
It’s routine now. When practice finishes late, Kageyama and Hinata attempt to leave last and Kageyama lingers behind as Hinata shuffles his bike from its parking spot.
Hinata blabs about their team’s latest attack or how cool Yamaguchi’s serves are and Kageyama always attentively listens.
They walk to the school gate and it’s only until Hinata physically must bike away does Kageyama mutter, “Stay safe.”
Hinata wasn’t sure he heard it correct the first time.
Like, of course he’d be safe! He could ride the route home with his eyes closed!
Perhaps not… but the point still stood; there was nothing for Kageyama to be afraid of.
There still isn’t. Hinata has never strayed from his regular ride home, but Kageyama never fails to say the two words.
“Why do you always say that?” Hinata tilts his head, deciding this warm night is the one to satisfy his curiosity. There is no underlying accusatory tone, only an urge to understand Kageyama.
Kageyama looks alarmed, startled. He never intentionally chose those words, but they always seemed to spill out instead of a farewell.
“I just want you to be safe.”
Oh!
Hinata beams and gives a quick hug to Kageyama before parting ways.
“You stay safe too!”
