Work Text:

“You can’t be serious.” Jason grumbled for the fourth time. But he wasn’t saying it at you so you were choosing to ignore him.

There were binders, fabric swatches, flower pictures, and clothing options and papers fo a million other things scattered around you, meanwhile you’d given Jason the duty of handling the seating chart.

He kept looking at the names and switching the placements around. Groaning and grumling to himself with heightened annoyance.

“Are you serious, right now?!” He mumbled to himself again and finally turned to you. “Baby, these are too many people.” He folded his arms. “You gotta cut people out. We can’t invite every single person you’ve ever met.” He looked at you as if you were at fault. “And look at this-” He pointed to the main binder. “Why do we need to have such a big thing? Why can’t we just marry with our close friends and family? Why do we need 200 people to just witness-” He sighed and sat on the couch.

“It already is just our friends and family.” You said nonchalantly, not moving off the floor.

Still hunched over, still adjusting what flowers would go where and whether to put Jason in a navy suit or a dark green one. And what would bridesmaids would wear and-

“Babe-” He reached to nudge your shoulder. “ Babe- ” He whined it out again and you finally looked at him over your shoulder. “I want a smaller wedding.” He pouted.

You wanted to throw the binder at him. The wedding was next month. Save the dates had already been gone. You wanted to smack him upside on his head or kick his shin. But you didn’t do either of that.

“Who do you wanna cut out?” You looked up at him innocently, not moving from the floor. “The guest list is over there. You can change it if you like.”

He nodded, picking up the stack of papers. He went through them quickly and gulped at the realisation that it was his guests that were too many. From his own family to the Outlaws, Titans, the Leaguers and every random person that he had turned into a life long friend or connection.

“Well- Uh-” He cleared his throat. “We don’t have to invite everyone from this.” He swallowed dry. “I mean, do we even need Tim or Damian there-” He laughed nervously.

You controlled a laugh. “You wanna cut out your brothers?”

“Yeah- Okay- Well- Um-” He scanned the list again. “The Titans don’t need to be invited. We- I haven’t worked with them since-” What was he supposed to say? Since last November?

“Raven is Damian’s plus one and you wanna tell Victor, Garfield, Wally- Everyone that they’re not invited?” You laughed.

“Yeah-” Jason nodded, going paler. “Well-” He cleared his throat. “The Leaguers? Not everyone is even that important and-”

“Sooooo- Who do you wanna cut?” You tilt your head. “Clark? Diana? Barry? Arthur? Oliver? Hal? Or their plus ones?”

“Uh- No- We can’t not invite Lois, Steve, Iris and-” He chewed on his lip, his eyes darting over the list again and again. “Maybe we-” You nodded, encouraging him for a viable solution. “How about we make it no kids allowed ?”

“Lian’s our flower girl.” You reminded him and he deflated immediately.

Jason looked at the guest list again. And again. And again. Then he tossed it onto the coffee table like it burned him.

“I’m gonna lose my damn mind,” He moaned, scrubbing both hands over his face. “We’re inviting a small village to this wedding.”

You went back to your sea of swatches and stationery spread out in front of you on the floor. “It’s just our friends and family, Jay.”

He gestured wildly at the list like it had personally betrayed him. “You keep saying that like I don’t come from a very complicated family tree!”

“Jason.” You warned.

“And somehow Constantine ended up on this list too!! Why is John on this list?” He whined again like a petulant child.

You finally looked up at him, blinking slowly. “You literally said, and I quote , ‘that bastard saved my ass in Prague, he deserves a steak dinner and an open bar.’”

He sucked in a sharp breath, “Okay-”

“Baby, it’s just one day.” You smiled, leaning back on your hands. “We say the vows, we sign the papers, cut the cake, dance. We let Bruce cry when he gives a speech. We serve the food before Clark get’s a chance to give his speech.” You chuckled a little.

“I’m not even worried about Clark. It’s Barry, I’m worried about!” Jason exclaimed. “I’m sure he has a powerpoint presentation of my Robin days and you know how fast he is!”

“Jay.” You said softly.

“Why can’t it be just you and me? No one else. Quiet. Calm. Easy.” He reached and caressed your cheek.

You smiled, leaning into his palm. “How about both?”

“Both?” His thumb was running small circles on your cheek.

“Yeah. You be a good boy for me and get through this wedding with a smile and afterwards, we’ll do another. Just us. No one else.” You offered.

“You’d do that?” His eyes lit up. “Really?”

“I’d marry you in a McDonald’s parking lot. This- This is for everyone else.” You explained. “You know everyone’s looking forward to you being a groom. They’ve seen you grow up. They’re excited.” He sighed and nodded. You leaned forward, your chin propped on his knee. “So, still wanna cut someone off?” You teased him.

“Ollie.” He said with a knee-jerk reaction.

“Jason!” You laughed.

“Okay, okay- Fine.” He pouted. “If I can’t cut anyone from the list then I want veto over the music selection.

“No chance! You tried to put Metallica on the playlist!” You scolded him.

“Hey- Woah- Nothing Else Matters is a beautiful song!” He argued back, and you shook your head.

“Try again, assbutt.” You rolled your eyes.

“I feel like I’m being oppressed .” He sighed dramatically and fell backwards into the couch again as if he’d been shot.

You laughed and stood up, climbing onto the couch next to him. “You’ll survive, you big baby.”

“Will I?” He gave you puppy eyes and leaned over, head on your chest, arms around your waist. “I feel like I may actually die. And I know what that feels like so you have to take my word for it.”

You tugged at his ear to chastise him and a very manly yelp escaped him. He gave you a pouty glare, rubbing his ear.

“Give me something .” He said so sweetly, you felt like you might cave afterall.

You sighed heavily and nodded. “Fine. What do you want?”

“Cake veto.” Jason said quickly and you raised a brow. “I want red velvet and I want it heavy on the chocolate.” He spoke as if he was brokering a peace treaty.

“But my earl grey lavender infusion-” Your brows knitted, it was seemingly your turn to pout.

“I’ll make it for our anniversary and try not to gag.” He rolled his eyes. “Come on. Please?”

“Fine- Fine.” You relented and leaned into the couch again as he covered you like a giant dog. “Anything else?”

“Yeah, remind me to cut Lobo off the list.” He mumbled into your skin.

“What the fuck?” You yanked him back by his hair. “Why is he even on the list?!”

“Ow!! Roy dared me!” He said quickly, hiding his face into your chest again.

“You’re not allowed to touch anything anymore.” You shook your head.

He laughed a little, pressing a light, lingering kiss as an apology to your neck. “But hey- On the bright side, in exactly 28 days, 13 hours and a few minutes, I’ll get to call you my wife.”
