Rhaenyra Targaryen POV
“I intend to marry… the lady Alicent Hightower. Before spring’s end”
For the second time in Rhaenyra’s life, her world changed for the worse.
The first time Rhaenyra’s world changed was during the heir’s tournament. Her mother died while the nobility of King’s Landing continued cheering for the babe. Everyone had not cared that a woman, who had parents, siblings, and a daughter, had been butchered for a babe that did not live for long. As if her mother’s life was expandable for the life of a boy.
After the death announcement of the queen and Baelon, lords had mourned the heir more than the queen. The council immediately began pushing the king to remarry. Rhaenyra would not be surprised if the king’s council had begun their talks the night of her mother’s funeral.
While Rhaenyra was right to be angry over people not mourning her mother properly, she understood that Aemma Targaryen had only been queen in name. She was no queen Visenya or Alysanne who were involved in the ruling of King’s Landing. Her mother’s purpose was to provide a pure-blooded heir to the Iron Throne and she had failed.
Rhaenyra still holds a lot of anger but understanding the ways of the world lessened her anger at the people of King’s Landing. Her anger at her father was a different story.
Viserys Targaryen is a king who only dreamt of a son. While Aemma desired to raise Rhaenyra, she had no energy to raise her, save for few hours every week. Viserys had the energy to be a father but not the desire.
Viserys only saw Rhaenyra as a beacon of hope that meant he can get a living son. He neglected her and took away her mother and her uncle. He named her heir after her mother’s death to atone for being a kinslayer. If Rhaenyra was meant to be queen, she would have always meant to be a queen. He could have named her heir earlier and saved her mother from dying in agony.
Now, not only did Viserys ask for her blessings to replace her mother and displace her with a boy, but he had also taken her only companion away. Why did he have to ruin everything good in her life?
Look straight at Alicent gave Rhaenyra more understanding of the situation.
“Alicent looks guilty. This announcement is no coincidence. She already this was happening. How dare she? After everything I did for her? I must make a move now. This is a golden opportunity! Laena is officially out of the queenly race. The Sea Snake may be a greedy man but he is a proud man first. He will not offer Laena again.”
“Your grace” Rhaenyra interrupted the rantings of the Sea Snake “While I am happy to hear you are pursuing love and happiness after the death of my mother, the queen, I cannot accept Alicent Hightower becoming my stepmother.”
“I am the king, Rhaenyra. I choose whoever I want to marry. Asking for your blessings was a mere formality as to not hurt your feelings. I was going to marry Alicent regardless.”
“I understand, my king. My concerns are for the good of the realm. The last Targaryen to have a Hightower wife was Maegor. What would the council do if the realm feels you are following the path of the cruel? His madness began after marrying Ceryse and his seed not taking root. Not only would this marriage cause disruption and chaos to the realm, but it could also end up being fruitless. Lastly, there is also the matter of the rumors.”
“Rumors? What rumors?” The king’s face lost all color.
“Father, I had been hearing rumors regarding lady Alicent and her chastity. I had not wanted to believe those vile rumors at first but when I tried to send for my only lady-in-waiting late at night, I was always told she was not available for the crown princess.”
This was not entirely untrue. Alicent had also been absent from their lessons these past moons. She apologized to Rhaenyra, claiming that she was busy with tasks the hand had given her. She also had stopped attending Rhaenyra diligently as she used to. She would only finish her basic duties. When Rhaenyra invited her for late night talks, Alicent often refused. Every time Rhaenyra would ask Alicent if everything was alright, Alicent would claim to be busy with prayers. But that is not the complete truth, is it? Alicent had been busy. That much is true. She was just not busy with prayer. she had been busy with the king.
“Father, I had heard she was spending time with men late at night. Without a chaperone!” Rhaenyra said confidently as if that is the undisputed truth and not an educated guess based on her former friend’s behavior.
“Rhaenyra! That is untrue. The only man I met was the king. I was only offering him comfort by reading to him. I did not do anything improper. I… I had also not met other men. It was only the king.” Alicent burst with a red face.
“How dare she call me by my given name? At least she is stupid enough to hurt her image in front of the councilmen. Otto should have focused on educating his daughter instead of manipulating the king.”
While Valyrians have no care for matters such as chastity and propriety, Andals were a different story. The pious Alicent had tried to defend herself against the allegations against her, not knowing that she confirmed Rhaenyra’s words to the council.
Rhaenyra ignored Alicent’s outburst and continued “Is this truly the legacy you wish for? To be similar to Maegor and marrying a Hightower? What if they wished to displace me as heir or usurped me after your death?”
At that question, both Alicent and Otto paled. Corly Velaryon was amused at the turn of events. He was insulted that his beautiful Laena was displaced by a plain-looking girl. Now, he was enjoying watching the downfall of the Hand. He will not offer Laena again but he might become a strong ally to Rhaenyra if only to snub the king and the lords who rejected Rhaenys’ claim. Other council members looked alarmed. No one wants to be likened to Maegor. House Hightower had just lost a lot of trades and marriage opportunities. Rhaenyra is willing to pay a hefty sum to spread this imagery across the land by midnight.
The king gave a small laugh.
“Rhaenyra, there is no need for such fears my child. Maegor was cursed by the gods for being a kinslayer. It was no fault of Ceryse or other Hightowers. The matter was also as Alicent had said. She provided comfort to me in my time of need. There is no doubt in my mind that she would be a good queen who will provide the realm with spares. There is also no doubt that Otto Hightower is an honorable man who would never dream of usurping the rightful heir. He was the main force behind naming you heir after all”
“Your grace, even the most honorable of men can commit treason for the betterment of his house.” Rhaenyra said defensively. She had always hated when Viserys would speak to her as if she was a naïve child with no knowledge of how the world works.
“No, my child, that is simply not true. But to dissuade your fears, Otto and Alicent will swear an oath in front of the council that neither of them will contest your claim in the future” the king said, unknowing of the trap he just laid in front of his Hand. Truly, Otto could not have picked a better puppet.
The hand had been looking at everyone in the council room and their reactions. No doubt hoping for an intervention of any kind. Or perhaps, he was looking at his power running away from him.
“Father?” Alicent said tentatively, reaching out to him.
“What?” Otto snapped back, ripping his arm violently from his daughter.
“The king was asking something of you, Lord Hand” Corlys sneered.
With a last glare, Otto focused back on the king.
“I apologize your grace. My mind was elsewhere.”
“It is no problem ser Otto. I was reassuring Rhaenyra that you are an honorable man and would swear an oath that no child from my marriage will contest Rhaenyra’s claim to the throne.”
“I… I am at a loss my king. I do not believe I can make such oath. Should she prove to be unsuitable as prince Daemon had, then should I not contest her claim? Should I not perform my duty as Hand and protect the interest of the realm?” Otto replied as he was regaining his composure.
“And did you think of the interest of the realm when you sent your daughter to the widowed king without a chaperone? What does your daughter bring to the crown? She is not the daughter of the lord of House Hightower and does not bring anything of significance to the crown”
“Princess Rhaenyra. I only sent Alicent to comfort the king in his time of need. I did not send her for her to marry the king. I only had the best intentions.” Otto defended.
“True. Your best intentions were to send the servant of the crown princess to comfort the king instead of a whore from the silk street. I do applaud you for your quick thinking. What would the lords say should the king be discovered with a lowborn whore?”
“Rhaenyra! I would never lay with a whore. I am the king of the seven kingdoms and I have an image to uphold.” The king exclaimed, scandalized at the prospect of being discovered with a whore.
“My apologies father. I only want reassurance for my position.”
“As is your right, my precious girl, but please mind your words lest you insult the lord.”
The king directed his attention back to Otto. The Hand always manipulate the king. The only problem is that with making a puppet of someone is that others can play with that puppet too.
“Ser Otto, while I applaud your dedication to the crown, my daughter is no Daemon. I raised Rhaenyra to be a responsible princess who would be a great queen in the future. She had been serving as a cup bearer to the council since she was merely seven namedays old. Younger than even your daughter when she begun serving. She attends all her lessons and is responsible. Give us your oath and your assurance that you would not endorse any child of Alicent to displace Rhaenyra in the succession line”
“I I… I cannot give that oath” Otto whispered.
“What?” the king asked incredulously.
“My king… I cannot make the oath”
“And why is that ser Otto? Were you not the one who advocated for Rhaenyra to become my heir?”
“My king, Lord Hand does not mean any insult by his refusal” Mellos interjected.
“I am talking with Otto.” The king snarled.
“My king, my daughter will give you a male heir. The realm will not accept a woman on the iron throne even if she was Jaeherys reborn. Naming her heir was to ensure that Daemon would not end on the throne until a legitimate heir arrived. It was always known that you will remarry to get a true heir. I am your Hand, your grace. I must tell you uncomfortable truths and steer you in the right direction.”
Silence filled the small council room again. Otto looked resigned. Ser Westerling looked angry but kept his silence. He previously looked surprised when Alicent had admitted she visited the king since he never saw her on his shifts. Sers Lyonel Strong and Lyman Beesbury were shocked. Mellos, who butchered the queen, looked terrified. Lord Velaryon looked smug. The king looked as if he had finally seen Otto for who he is, not who he wished him to be. On any other day, he would have excused Otto but not today.
“Aemma did not give me a son. What makes you so sure that Alicent will be different?”
The silence in the room was suffocating. Otto could not answer. Even Rhaenyra was surprised by the direction her father took.
“Are you going to answer?”
“Your grace” Mellos began “what happened with queen Aemma was a tragedy. Death in childbed is not the fate of every woman. The late lady Hightower had given Lord Hand two healthy sons before she passed from fever.”
“That is true” the king answered “But I am the king. If Lord Hand cannot swear an oath to not contest Rhaenyra’s claim, then I cannot marry lady Alicent.”
"But your grace, if it came out that I had been to your chambers, I would be ruined"
"Your grace, you have to remarry, and you are already familiar with lady Alicent and have given the lady your word"
"I have been a loyal servant to the crown for many years and have dedicated my life to serving two kings. Surely one oath will not erase years of servitude"
"That's enough" with the king's voice, all the voices died down. "I wish to hear no more of this topic. We shall reconvene tomorrow." The king had left the council room and everyone else followed.

Rhaenyra POV
Rhaenyra has been pacing outside the king’s chambers for an hour.
She went to seek audience with the kings before anyone else did. Unfortunately, the gods did not grant Rhaenyra their favors. Ser Westerling told her someone is meeting the king.
“It must one of the Hightowers or their goons. I hope I can undo their influence.”
“Ser Westerling, how long has the guest been in audience with the king?”
“The third hour has begun, princess. If you wish, I can send for you when the guest leaves.”
“No, thank you Ser. I will await here. If you wish to do me a favor, can you send for refreshment once I begin the meeting with my father?”
“Of course, princess.”
“I need to plan. The Hightowers have been controlling the king for years. They had turned him against his closest kin. Viserys cannot comprehend a world where Otto is a traitor.”
Rhaenyra’s mother and uncle had always warned Viserys of Otto’s ambitions. Viserys had always dismissed her mother’s concern as if she was merely exaggerating incidents. Viserys’ response to her uncle’s concern was to remove the problem all together and exiling her uncle over imaginary infractions.
Despite Viserys’ faults, Rhaenyra cannot fault him completely for falling for the vipers. After all, Rhaenyra was also guilty of the same crime.
Aemma Targaryen had given Rhaenyra similar warnings of the vipers of the court.
Of men and their ambitions.
Of the Hightower greed and jealousy.
Rhaenyra had not been receptive to her mother’s warnings. She was but a girl blinded by friendship.
Now, Rhaenyra sees the truth.
There was no chance of Alicent being selected to be queen so soon after her mother’s death unless Otto had sent her to seduce the king. Unless she agreed to go.
Alicent, herself, confirmed her nightly visits to the king.
No Rhaenyra cannot fault her father completely for falling to such obvious tricks.
She can, however, fault him over how he treated her mother and uncle. How he is treating her mother now that he is replacing her with a young girl, not even the mourning period is over.
Otto suddenly emerged from the king’s chamber. Wearing the same smug expression he wears whenever her uncle is exiled.
“Princess” Otto nodded, not even slightly bowing.
“Ser Otto”
“Are you seeking audience with the king?”
“Yes, I am. We have much to discuss on the upcoming events.”
“Fair well, princess. May your discussion with the king be enlightening.” Otto said as he was leaving.
“Ser Westerling, can you announce my arrival to the king?” Rhaenyra was playing with her heir and her mother’s rings.
The door to the king’s chamber open while Westerling said “announcing the arrival of the heir, crown princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, your grace.”
“Father, I hope I did not intrude at such an hour.” Rhaenyra smiled, bowing.
“Rhaenyra! Come, come sit, my daughter. You can never intrude.”
Rhaenyra moves closer to the king and sat in the chair closer to the candles.
“I was thinking of sending for you. We have some things to discuss. I understand the council meeting was a bit… intense. But such are the matters of the kingdom. A good king, or queen, must understand when to concede and when to challenge the opinion of the council.”
“I understand, father. I have been your cup bearer since my seventh nameday. I bore witness to many council meetings that are more serious and intense. When I become queen, I hope I will be half the ruler you are. I have been thinking about the council meeting as well. I have decided to take my duties more seriously and learn from the council. But this is not what I came here to discuss. I am here to ask something of you. Before telling you, you must give me your word you will listen to my request till the end and seriously consider it.”
“Of course, my child. You have my word. I will listen to everything you say and I will give it serious consideration.”
“When you mentioned that ser Otto and lady Alicent can swear an oath to placate my worries, I was very pleased. I have been worried about my position as heir, and I did not know how to protect that position. I was very pleased to know that you have been thinking about my position and how to protect me. The idea of them swearing an oath does bring me peace of mind. When ser Otto refused to swear it, he said it was to ensure my fitness for the position. This brought me many worries since it seems that I am only a placeholder until you get a male heir but he al…”
“Rhaenyra, I believe I know what you wish for. I am glad you are thinking of this. The reaction of the council members and how Otto refused to swear the oath made me question the suitability of this marriage. However, I cannot, in good conscience, ruin the reputation of lady Alicent. You must understand that. Even if you wish me to call the marriage off, I cannot abandon the lady when she had been a good friend to you and brought me comfort in my time of need. I cannot do that to her, no matter how much you wish me to.”
“Father, you misunderstood my intentions. I am not here to pressure you to call the wedding off. I am here to propose the perfect solution for ser Otto’s conundrum. He did bring a good point when he mentioned that it is the duty of the Hand to tell the king unpleasant truths. I agree with this sentiment. Ser Otto did tell you many unpleasant things and such is the duty of the hand. However, as subjects of the crown, ser Otto and lady Alicent must swear the oath that the king demanded in front of the court. The solution to that issue is to dismiss ser Otto as Hand since you have decided to continue with the marriage. This would take the burden of the Hand responsibility off of ser Otto’s shoulder while also allowing him to continue acting as a loyal subject to the crown by swearing the oath. This will also console houses that feel you favor the Hightowers too much. We do not wish the realm to whisper about favoritism and hurt the image of the crown and house Hightower. Having a Hightower consort and Hand will stress the realm and they may begin boycotting trades and deals with Hightowers.”
“Favoritism, huh? I guess I do not wish to trouble house Hightower and Otto after their loyalty. However, firing Otto without cause will not be just.” Viserys rubbed his forehead.
“I may have the solution to this as well! How much is house Hightower paying for Alicent’s dowry?”
“They are not paying a dowry. I am the king after all and have no need for coin.”
“Exactly, the marriage will bring nothing to the crown. The marriage is more like a gift to the Hightowers to reward them for their hard work. We can convince others that this marriage is a trade instead. A Hightower consort for a Hightower Hand. Being a consort to the king is a higher honor than being a Hand to the king. You can also use the dismissal to bring the Velaryons back into the Red Keep. Say what you will but they are still our kin. You have chosen Alicent over Laena so choose Rhaenys over Otto.”
“Choose Rhaenys over Otto? As Hand?”
“Yes! There has never been a lady Hand before but there has also never been an official crown princess either.”
“This is different”
“No, it isn’t. This can help my ascension. Rhaenys had been raised to be queen. She can help you in training me for my future role. Making princess Rhaenys your hand would also ensure the unity of the house of the dragon. Please father, think about everything we talked over tonight. The hour is late now. I must leave for my rooms now.”
“Wait! Rhaenyra, you will get your oath. This I can promise you now. I will think about everything else.”
Rhaenyra smiled at the king and gave him one last bow before leaving the rooms. She already discussed everything she wanted to. She can only hope the king will take the bait.
Rhaenyra is planning to prove herself to be the capable princess she knows she can be.
The following day
“Esteemed council members. I have called this meeting to discuss the events of the previous council meeting. Yesterday, I announced my intention to marry lady Alicent, and this wedding will still happen.”
Alicent and Otto gave pleased looks to each other and their allies before turning back to Viserys.
“The lady had not lost her honor. However, I cannot ignore the rumors surrounding her and have her ruined. I am at fault for her predicament since I should have turned her away the first night. In my weakness, I had accepted her comfort and I will never let her suffer the consequences for my actions. I will ensure no harm comes to her and will marry her.”
“What a great sacrifice. Marrying a young girl to save her reputation. I suppose this is the only way he will see himself as a dashing knight saving the wronged maiden. I wonder if he reads light romance novels.”
“However, I still expect lady Alicent and ser Otto to swear an oath in front of the court to not challenge my will and displace Rhaenyra as heir with Alicent’s children. I will also dismiss ser Otto from his position as Hand.”
At that, Otto’s face changed. While Rhaenyra does not know what his talk with the king entailed, she knew he had not thought he would need to secure his own position.
“Ser Otto had been a great friend and an even greater hand. His point on the Hand confronting the king with unpleasant truth had made me want to alleviate that burden from his shoulders. We will be a family so his thoughts will always be welcome, but this is a great opportunity to seek out different perspectives. I have written to my cousin, princess Rhaenys, to take over as Hand.”
Viserys looked at lord Velaryon.
“Lord Velaryon, I understand that choosing Alicent was perceived as a slight against your house, which led to your behavior yesterday. However, I will forgive your outburst at the council meeting, and I hope you will forgive the slight. I have been raised with princess Rhaenys at the Red Keep and I wish for children to be raised along side Rhaenyra. I also know Rhaenys to be a capable woman and I wish she will serve the realm as a capable Hand.”
“Your grace, it would be an honor for house Velaryon to help you with the realm. We are kin and it is high time to act like that.” Corlys Velaryon bowed down in reverence.
“But your grace, ser Otto has been loyal to the crown since the days of king Jaeherys and he did nothing to deserve being dismissed.” Mellos stood up.
“Maester Mellos, I had already shown a lot of favor towards house Hightower. I cannot have a Hightower consort and Hand. I will give Otto time as Hand until princess Rhaenys arrives to take over. Now, let us not speak of my decisions. Lord Beesbury, how much coin can I get from the royal coffers for a royal wedding, tourney, and festivities that will last a moon.”
“You grace, I believe we have enough for a royal wedding and a tourney. For festivities, we need to get a count of how many houses will attend the wedding to get an accurate estimate.”
“Alight, we must make an announcement to the court and write to the houses…”
Rhaenyra began serving the men diligently and keeping note of things discussed.
Rhaenyra has officially won her first battle in the game of thrones. The Hightowers will always be an obstacle to her ascension but she will burn them with the same weapons they love using.
She caused Otto’s dismissal.
Now, she needs to focus her energy on Alicent.
She must talk to her servants.
Have you heard the latest news about the king? He is getting married to some highborn whore.
Servants in the Red Keep say that Alicent Hightower opened her legs to the king during the last pregnancy of the good queen. That is why the queen passed away. The king ordered her death to fuck a tight cunt. Men are all the same. No matter age or station.
Poor princess Rhaenyra. Can you imagine how she will have to bow to the servant who braided her hair and cleaned her chamber pot?
The Hand whored his daughter before selling her the king. That’s the reason for his dismissal. The king found out that he bought a ruined woman. This is also how the Hightowers gained the favor of the Lannisters. The twin lions trained and fucked Alicent.
I truly hope that they have a bedding ceremony. The entire realm knows that the Hightower girl is a whore, but it would be great if the king gave everyone a show.
The Hightowers will not know a moment of peace.

Otto Hightower POV
Otto was rushing back to the tower. His joy for Alicent’s engagement was eclipsed with his devastation for losing the position he had earned.
“Father!” Alicent was running after him. “Father, are you alright?”
“Alright? How can I be alright after I lost my position because of you, Alicent?”
“It is not a fault of Alicent you lost your position, father. You chose to make her queen, and no one had foreseen the king would displace you due to the engagement.” Gwayne joined, ever the protective brother.
“Of course it is her fault! If she had kept watch of that blasted girl, she would not have changed the king’s mind about me being Hand.”
“Princess Rhaenyra did not do anything. How could princess Rhaenyra influence the king into making Rhaenys the Hand? Would it not be better to change the king’s mind on remarrying?”
“It is Rhaenyra’s fault. I am certain. She sought audience with king after I spent hours convincing him not to get out of the engagement. I know not what they discussed. Before I left the king, he was content to marry Alicent. Despite the rumors surrounding her. Without the blasted oath. After I left the king, I lost my position AND will be forced to swear the oath in front of the court. Everything I worked for will be gone because of your sister.”
“This might be true but that does not mean it is Alicent’s fault the king made those decisions.” Gwayne defended.
“Why was she not with the princess? Why did she not distract the girl or kept watch of her?”
“Father, I apologize for my mistake. I did not think of asking the princess to meet with me. She had stopped calling on me even prior to the marriage announcement and I had not thought to find out why.” Alicent bowed.
“See! Your sister admits her faults. Do not talk back to me again, Gwayne.”
Gwayne looked at his sister while she kept her head down and averted her eyes from his gaze.
Gwayne sighed. “Let us focus on the issue at hand.”
“Let us. I still do not understand what Rhaenyra said to change the king’s mind.”
“Maybe, it was not the princess’ doing. It could have been someone else.” Alicent said, hoping to appease Otto.
“And who would that be, Alicent? Who would that be?” Otto mocked. “Velaryon? Strong? Who would dare seek audience with the king at such an odd hour? The servants said none entered the king’s rooms other than myself and Rhaenyra that night. How did they enter the king’s room?”
“Someone could have influenced the princess and told her what to say to the king.” Gwayne interjected. “We should focus on the princess’ correspondence and meetings. It cannot be Alicent since the princess will not trust her after the engagement. Do you currently have spies on the princess?”
“No, I do not have any spies on her. I had Alicent but she could not even do that one job. Though, you might be onto something Gwayne. Someone must be influencing the princess. The obvious choice is the Velaryons. They lost the most when Viserys chose Alicent instead of Laena. However, we cannot discount others.”
“Father, what can we do to help?” Alicent raised her eyes for the first time in a while.
“Alicent, you need to decide on your own what to do to help. You cannot behave like a little girl when you become queen. I cannot make all the decisions. You also cannot misstep like this again. Your mistake cost me my position. Your next mistake may cost me my life.”
“I understand father. I will do better in the future.”
“For now, do not cause more rumors. Do not talk to any man. Not even servants. And do not go anywhere without chaperone.”
“I will chaperone Alicent.”
“You are her brother. We need another chaperone for credibility, but you may still follow her around if you wish.”
“Of course.” Gwayne makes a move to leave.
“Gwayne! I did not dismiss you yet.” Gwayne abruptly stopped. “I will give you a list of names. Those are the servants who were serving the king during Alicent’s visits. I had paid them handsomely to not spread rumors about her visits. Interview them and execute them in secret. The king will not notice their absence, but we need to deal with witnesses as to not worsen the rumors. You both may leave now.”
Both Alicent and Gwayne left Otto to his thoughts. Otto and his family will continue living in the Tower of the Hand until Rhaenys answers the king’s offer. Afterwards, the Hightowers will move into the queen’s quarters, which are being prepared. It is frowned upon to have the bride live in the queen’s rooms before marriage, but Otto cannot afford to live elsewhere.
Otto sat in silence, rubbing his forehead to relieve his headache and thinking about his next steps.
First, he needs to keep Rhaenyra isolated. He needs to place spies in Rhaenyra’s household and convince the king to have Bethany replace Alicent as her lady-in-waiting. She is a princess and will need ladies-in-waiting. It was a miracle that the king valued Otto’s opinion and did not give her more ladies-in-waiting for all those years. Having Bethany there will ensure she will stay isolated and will not get influenced by other ladies.
Second, he needs to offer his guidance to Rhaenys once she becomes Hand. She is only a woman and will need the help of a lord. She will gain more by following his guidance. The only issue will be Corlys. What man will allow his wife to follow another man?
Third, he needs to contact his brother and their allies. Losing his position will eventually make it difficult to advise Viserys. They need to find a new strategy to ensure they will not lose their influence. Normally, Alicent should be the person who influence the king the most. However, she is childish and does not possess the wit needed for the job. While women do not posses the same capabilities as men, some women are very intelligent.
Otto must also talk with his allies within the keep. He needs to ensure none of his council will back out due to the oath or the rumors going around. Some of the council members have been implicated in the rumors. He needs to apologize and fix the situation.
There is a lot of work to be done before the marriage announcement and the oath.
Alicent Hightower POV
“Brother, thank you for defending my actions. I truly appreciate it. However, you do not need to defend me when I am the one in the wrong. I cost father his job and everyone hates me.” Alicent sobbed.
“Alicent, you are not in the wrong in this. You did not know someone would manipulate the princess to use her to influence the king. You did not cost father his job. Displacing father as Hand was the only wise decision the king made. I am astonished that father did not lose his position earlier. The only wrong you did was listen to father in every little thing. Even when the actions were wrong.”
“The Seven commanded us all to follow the orders of our fathers and mothers. I may not have a mother now, but I can listen to father.”
“The seven also commanded us to remain faithful to our masters and keep our chastity before the marriage bed.”
“I know and I have always been faithful, and my maidenhead is intact.”
“No, Alicent. You did neither.” Gwayne looked at Alicent with pity. “Your master is the princess. You were unfaithful to her. You shrunk your duties towards her and went to the king behind her back.”
“The king and I did not do anything improper.”
“Visiting the king late at night without a chaperone was improper. But visiting the king without informing the princess was a betrayal to her. You would feel betrayed if the princess visited father in the middle of the night.”
“But we—”
“Alicent, I wish to stop talking of this. I told father not to send you to the king, and he refused to listen. I asked you to seek the princess’ help in this matter and you refused. I have tried to shield you from father’s ambitions, but you went along with them. I love you Alicent and will always protect you, but we would not be in this position if it were not for you and father.”
“If you believe this is my fault, why did you defend me?”
“Because I find it disgusting that he only ever blames you for everything. Even things that are not your fault.”
“I need to be a dutiful daughter!”
Gwayne signed. “I wish to speak no more of this. I promise to defend you till my last breath, but I will not enable this. I must take my leave.”
“Gwayne is wrong. I did everything right. The only mistake I made was not trying to fix my relationship with Rhaenyra. Other than that, I did what was commanded of me and followed the teachings of the Seven.”
“Matilda!”
“Milady? You need something from me?”
“Draw me a bathe with jasmine oil.”
“Yes, milady.”
“I will talk with Rhaenyra. I cannot have her think me a whore.”
Two days later
Otto POV
“Lord Hand, lord Hightower has sent you a response.” Mellos said, handing Otto the letter.
“I am no longer the Hand, maester Mellos.”
“You will always be the Hand of the king. I am certain the king will still listen to your input. Only now, you will be the father of the queen.”
Otto sighed. “That’s wishful thinking.”
“Have you began preparing?”
“Yes, I sent orders for the rooibos tea. It is known to increase fertility. I will brew it for lady Alicent with a mixture of herbs the septas had grown to increase strength. Just to prepare our future queen for her duty. I have also ordered a strong aphrodisiac. If consumed by the king daily, he will perform his duty daily.”
“You are the only one to have not disappoint me, Mellos. Let us proceed as planned and tell me when you receive other letters.”
Otto opened the letter from his brother and started reading the contents.
To Lord Hand,
I heard that congratulations are in order. I had not anticipated you would secure such a great match for Alicent. Well done, on getting her engaged to the king. It would have been better if you had secured this match for Bethany. She is a great beauty and would have been the perfect image of the queen of the seven kingdoms. Alas, a father must prioritize the future of his children first. Alicent’s engagement to the king is still a great step towards our goal of shining the light of the Seven on the seven kingdoms and restoring our house to our former glory.
As you are reading this letter, I have begun travelling for King’s Landing and will arrive in a fortnight. I will need to be present for the discussions with the king regarding the wedding. We must ensure that House Hightower will pay minimal costs for this marriage. I do not have the funds for Alicent’s marriage, and I do not wish to use Bethany’s dowry and funds. Mayhaps we can pay for decorating the queen’s rooms. I am also bringing Bethany with me to acquaint her with the princess. I will be leaving her in the Red Keep. I do not care how, but she needs to be a lady-in-waiting and obtain a favorable marriage within a year.
Congratulations are not the only purpose of this letter. I am writing to inform you the Faith has begun recruiting for the military. They are preaching against House Targaryen, focusing on their magic and beasts. It had been decided not to approach their incest. The future king will need a Targaryen queen. Diluting the Targaryen blood in the first generation will not work in our favor if we wish for our plans to remain undiscovered.
Prepare the Hand tower to receive us soon.
Hobert Hightower
Lord of Oldtown
Defender of the Citadel

Notes:
I hope you guys enjoyed the chapter.
I feel like I made Otto too aggressive towards Alicent. I originally wanted him to be more subtle but I figured it wouldn't make sense for him to be calm (?) when he just lost his job.
I also made Otto a bad parent to both Alicent and Gwayne but he definitely respects Gwayne a little more than he does Alicent. I hope I communicated that.
Let me know your thoughts in the comments. I respond to everyone but sometimes I take time.

Otto Hightower POV
Hobert arrived three days earlier than the predicted fortnight.
“Your Grace, it is my honor to be hosted by your majesty. When I heard the good news from Otto, I began the journey in haste. I hope I did not trouble you.”
“Lord Hobert, hosting you is no trouble. We are to be family soon. I wish your stay will be comfortable.”
“I am certain it will be. Your Grace, let me introduce you to Bethany Hightower, my granddaughter.” Hobert said.
“It’s an honor to be in your presence, your Grace.” Bethany courtesies.
“She is twelve namedays and is already a true Hightower beauty. She has many talents, including painting and embroidery. I am requesting you to place my granddaughter in the princess’ household as a lady-in-waiting. Princess Rhaenyra has been good to our Alicent. Bethany will certainly learn many things from her guidance.”
“With the loyalty house Hightower shown the crown, I am certain Rhaenyra will be delighted to take Bethany in. She will need a new lady-in-waiting since it will be inappropriate of Alicent to serve her once we are married.”
“Regarding Alicent’s—” Otto started.
“Thank you, your Grace.” Hobert interrupted loudly. “For the trust you place in house Hightower. We will forever be loyal to the crown.”
‘That insufferable asshole. He had not let me talk with the king since his arrival and now he interrupts me when I speak. He must still be angry about Alicent snubbing Bethany.’
“Your loyalty is the reason I considered your niece as a potential bride. I have also decided against taking Alicent’s dowry to further reward you for your devotion.”
“Thank you, your Grace. I truly am grateful for your generosity towards my house. House Hightower will never forget this.”
“We do still need to discuss the wedding plans, what is expected to be covered by your family, and what the crown will provide. Otto and I began discussing some plans, but nothing is to be set in stone without your opinion as head of the house.”
“I am more aware of what house Hightower can provide than Otto.” Hobert nodded.
“Of course, lord Hobert. Why don’t you rest in your rooms then meet me for lunch? We can begin talking about the weddings and the household preparation then. This will also be a good time for lady Bethany to meet Rhaenyra and learn her new responsibilities.”
“I would like that, your Grace.” Hobert glanced at Bethany before turning back to the king.
“Bethany and I will take our leaves now.” Hobert and Bethany bowed before leaving.
The king looked very pleased with Hobert and Bethany.
“You must be glad to meet your brother and your grandniece, Otto.”
“Yes, I am. My brother’s insights and contributions are always valued.”
At that, the king had a faraway look.
Otto knew the king was wishing that his own relationship with Daemon was similar to Hobert’s and Otto’s relationship.
Polite on the surface.
Nonexistent behind closed doors.
Although Otto still has to work with his brother in rebuilding their house to its former glory. Before the Targaryens arrived.
“Otto, I just remembered what I wanted to discuss with you earlier. I decided to summon the court tomorrow. I will announce my upcoming marriage with Alicent. You and Alicent will swear the oath tomorrow as well. Although… Lord Hobert should also join as lord of your house too. Afterwards, we will send ravens to every house for the wedding. We can plan a tourney and festivities. Tell Alicent to begin designing her wedding dress. There is so much to plan, Otto.” Viserys chattered excitedly. Nothing gets the king excited as planning a tourney does.
“I already have written the oath. If you would like, you can revise what I had written and make any changed before I swear it tomorrow.”
“Oh Otto, always looking ahead. The council and I have already written the oath for you. There is no need for you to worry about what to say.”
‘The council wrote the oath? Mellos had not mentioned the meeting to me.’
“The entire council?”
“Well… it was not the entire council. I met with the Master of Laws and Lady Hand. The three of us had discussed what the oath should cover, and the Master of Laws wrote it. I read it yesterday and everything written is fair.”
Otto almost forgot that Hobert is not the only unwanted guest in the Red Keep. Rhaenys and her children arrived on dragonback after she received the raven the king sent. The power-hungry wench couldn’t wait to travel by sea with her household.
“I will discuss it with Hobert and Alicent tonight. I will take my leave now, your Grace.”
‘I almost blamed Mellos for something he did not do. He is the most loyal ally I have. If he knew they would write the oath, he would have warned me or attempted to intervene.’
“Ser Otto, lord Hobert is calling for you in the council room closest to his rooms.” Otto nodded at the servant before going to the room.
Upon Otto arriving, he found Hobert was already there. Unlike Hobert’s former jovial demeanor with Viserys, he is looking furious and disappointed.
“Otto! What is this I head about you and Alicent swearing an oath in front of the court? What oath are you swearing?”
Otto handed Hobert the papers the king had given him.
“What is this? Have you truly fallen from the king’s favor this far? He does not trust you with the matter of succession. Not only did your lose your position as Hand in favor of princess Rhaenys, now you are being made to swear this ridiculous oath in front of the entire court? What the hell did you do, Otto? You used to have the king in the palm of your hand. Do you know how our house will look if you swear the oath tomorrow and then try to give your future grandson his rightful place on the throne? The entire kingdom will believe us to be oath breakers.” Hobert yelled.
“Hobert, calm yourself! The walls have ears. Besides, the king said you will also need to swear the oath.”
“That is what you have to say for yourself? You did not answer any of my questions.”
“Rhaenyra has been influenced by Corlys. She somehow persuaded the king to demote me from Hand and give t—”
“It’s princess Rhaenyra and Lord Corlys.” Hobert interrupted. “You have forgotten to address your betters with respect. No wonder the king lost his faith in you. You cannot even follow the simplest courtly protocol.”
‘I cannot believe Hobert arrived today and he begins the visit with scolding and undermining me. What will happen to the rest of the visit?’
“You had just said the walls have ears, but you still disregard protocol. What if someone heard and reported you to the king? What if you misspoke in front of the king?”
“None of that happened. That is not the reason I lost my position. I lost my position because someone influenced princess Rhaenyra. He coached her on what to say to the king and she convinced the king to name princess Rhaenys as Hand.”
“How do you know of the princess being influenced? Do you have proof?”
“After the council meeting when the king announced his intention of wedding Alicent, there has been a small misunderstanding between the king and I. I went to visit his Grace to fix the misunderstanding. When I left the king’s rooms, the princess went in to talk with him. That talk resulted in my demotion and being forced to swear the oath.”
“Hmmm, that is plausible. Why have you not fostered a decent relationship with the princess? Didn’t you place Alicent in her household for that purpose? Why hasn’t Alicent intervened before the princess got influenced?”
“She is only a girl. Why should I worry about her?”
“Because that girl is a princess of the blood.” Hobert said, frustration marring his face. “Even if she was not the crown princess, her position is still higher than yours. She will remain the heir until Alicent gives the king a son. Even if that day arrives, the princess has influence on the king which makes her a potential threat to our cause. Never forget that.”
“I will not underestimate the princess again.”
“What about Alicent?”
“What about her?”
“You haven’t answered my earlier question. Why hasn’t she intervened with the princess?”
“Ah… the truth of Alicent’s visits to the king was revealed and she lost the trust of the princess.”
“How will she regain that trust?”
“I do not know of her plans.”
“Otto, you need to ensure that our plans will not be ruined. If Alicent does not fix her relationship with the princess, the princess may become an obstacle.”
“Alicent should be old enough to fix the problem by an embroidery session or whatever ladies like to do with each other.”
Hobert sighed. “I will talk with Alicent and help her since you will not. In our next meeting, I expect you to answer any question I ask and not have me beg for scraps. I will take my leave now. I must check on Bethany.”
“How long will you stay in King’s Landing?”
“Until the wedding. Pray the king agrees to a short engagement.”
Otto has the sense that Hobert’s visit will be worse than he originally thought. His brother seems to be of the opinion that Otto is insolent and incompetent.
Now that Otto lost his position as Hand, he will live under the mercy of his brother. He fears Hobert will force him to go back to Oldtown with him. He must find ways to prevent that from happening. He must regain his position as the king’s Hand.
Alicent Hightower POV
Rhaenyra has abandoned Alicent in her time of need. She has been avoiding Alicent since the infamous council meeting. During the time Alicent needs a friend the most.
Ever since the council meeting, somehow Alicent’s nightly visits to comfort the king has been found out. Rumors are now rampant in the court, twisting the innocent purpose of the visits.
Everywhere Alicent went, be it the sept or the queen’s rooms, she is met with stares and whispers. No one is subtle about what they believe of Alicent. Alicent truly needs a friend by her side, but Rhaenyra is nowhere to be found.
Oddly, none of the whispers mentions her upcoming marriage to the king.
“Alicent!” A man’s voice interrupted Alicent’s musings.
Alicent flinched before searching for the source.
There he was. Uncle Hobert.
“Uncle!” Alicent said excitedly before running to her uncle and Bethany. She hugged both. The only thing Alicent has in common with Rhaenyra is her love for her uncle. He had always protected her from her father’s ire.
“Alicent, you are a woman grown. Congratulations on your upcoming marriage.” Hobert said.
“Thank you, uncle Hobert. I hope the trip was not too tiring.”
“The trip was not tiring at all. We even managed to arrive earlier than anticipated due to the good weather and good road conditions.” Her uncle said.
“We also took short breaks along the road. Grandfather could not wait to see you, cousin.” Bethany smiled sweetly.
Hobert smiled gently at Bethany and patted her shoulder before looking at Alicent and regaining his composure. “Now onto important topics. I have successfully convinced the king to place Bethany in the princess’ household. I will need you to keep an eye on Bethany and ensure that none of the other ladies-in-waiting bother her.”
Dread filled Alicent. “Other ladies-in-waiting?”
“Alicent, Bethany will not be the only lady-in-waiting for the princess.” Hobert took Alicent’s hand in his own. “The princess is heir now. She will need no less than five ladies. Even if she was not the crown princess, she would have needed more than one lady-in-waiting. I know not of what your father did to convince the king to have you as her only lady-in-waiting for all those years, but now that princess Rhaenys is Hand, life in the Red Keep will change. Bethany will need to gain the trust of the princess, and it will be difficult due to your history and their age difference.”
“Oh… I had not thought of what will happen after Rhaenys becomes Hand.”
“It’s princess Rhaenys, Alicent.” Hobert said gently. “You have always been a proper lady. You know better than not addressing your betters with their titles. Do not get influenced by your father’s faults. Especially now that you are to be queen, you need to strictly follow courtly protocols. You will be the mother of the Seven Kingdoms, and you will need to model to young ladies how to behave appropriately. You do not wish ladies to call you by your given name when you are queen.”
“But I am not any lady. I am the—”
“Except that you are. You are not the queen yet. Your father is a second son, and he is no longer the Hand. You do not have a lot of protection. You cannot afford to offend the wrong person.”
“I have told her that as well, uncle Hobert. Not only does she not have father’s protection, but she also does not have the protection of the princess anymore.”
Alicent almost forgot her shadow.
“Gwayne! You gave me such a fright. Where were you hiding?”
“I was securing the area to ensure no one will eavesdrop.”
“Good lad. You are a quick thinker. It’s a shame you abhor books. You would have made a great maester.”
“I would not have made a good maester, uncle Hobert.” Gwayne gave Alicent a tender look. “I am too overprotective of my family to not become a knight.”
“That is true. You take after Alyrie in this. Your mother was a great woman who loved her family with her entire soul.”
Gwayne looked happy to hear the compliment.
‘I am delighted uncle Hobert is here. He had always seen the good in Gwayne and me.’
“Now, we need to fix the mess you’re in. We need to fix the relationship between Alicent and princess Rhaenyra.”
Notes:
Hope you enjoy the new chapter. I worked on it the past two weeks but I kept finding mistakes 😳 I almost posted this chapter on Saturday but I found out that Bethany didn't say a word 😅
Hobert is very manipulative but he makes life difficult for Otto and I lowkey love him for that. He's still team green though.
Chapter Text
Rhaenyra Targaryen POV
Rhaenyra found herself sitting in the most fruitless luncheon she witnessed.
Fruitless for the King and her enemies.
The King invited Rhaenyra to lunch under the guise of meeting their new family and connecting with them.
Rhaenyra in turn invited Princess Rhaenys and her children. Lord Velaryon had important matters to attend to in Driftmark.
Otto initially objected to Princess Rhaenys’ presence until Rhaenyra reminded him that Princess Rhaenys is a Targaryen, and the purpose of this luncheon is to connect with family. Lord Hobert agreed with her on this which silenced Otto.
“Princess, I am honored to be your lady-in-waiting. I hope I will serve you as well as my cousin did.” Bethany Hightower said. A girl of only twelve namedays but is articulate in her speech and has grace in the way she carries herself. A far cry from Alicent’s speech and awkward demeanor.
“That is not something to strive for, Lady Bethany. Lady Hightower has not served me well as of late.” Or ever “You should aspire to become better.”
Bethany blushed then turned her focus to her plate. Keeping her head bowed. She has been talking with Rhaenyra for the entirety of the lunch. From favorite flowers to embroidery lessons. She tried to find anything the princess would tolerate but nothing worked.
“Rhaenyra!”
“Father, I am merely being honest with the young lady. Lady Hightower seldom responds to my calls. She stopped being concerned with her duties for a long time. Even prior to the marriage announcement. My maids are the ones who dress me. I have been managing my household purchases on my own, not only my coffers. The cooks can recognize my face than most lords and ladies of the court from having to ask them for food. Even lady Laena, who is not my lady-in-waiting has been assisting me with some of the heir errands.”
“Alicent, is that true?”
“Of course, he would not believe me over his beloved Hightowers and needs to question her for validation. Luckily Alicent is not a decent liar.”
“My King, I had thought that since I am to be your queen, I cannot be a servant to the princess.”
“Except that you are my daughter’s lady-in-waiting. You are not my fiancé yet. You cannot ignore your responsibilities on a whim. I had planned for you to step down from being my daughter’s lady-in-waiting and take over some of the consort duties after you swear the oath, but I can no longer trust in your ability to perform those duties if you cannot perform your current duties. What have you been doing if you were not helping the princess?”
Alicent’s face reddened and looked to be on the verge of tears and answered shakingly “I have been preparing my wedding dress and taking care of my uncle and cousin during their visit.”
“Your Grace, I apologize for any inconvenience our visit may have caused the Princess. Alicent need not worry about us any longer. She can take over the consort duties and take the burden off the Princess. Lady Bethany can begin her duties whenever the Princess wishes her to.”
“I cannot trust Alicent with the consort duties. Rhaenyra has been managing the consort duties since Aemma passed. Rhaenyra will have to continue those duties until Alicent proves herself to be worthy. Alicent will have to continue being Rhaenyra’s lady-in-waiting until our marriage ceremony. This will be a great opportunity for her to learn her future duties. Rhaenyra will give her the duties after the wedding.”
“But my King—” Alicent began
“Silence!” the King said sharply.
“Thank you, father. Lady Bethany will be introduced to my household tomorrow. However, I wish to get other ladies-in-waiting. Lady Hightower will leave my household soon and Lady Bethany is only twelve namedays. She will not be able to manage the household of a grown woman on her own. Lady Hightower certainly couldn’t, and we are of similar age. My mother and her ladies-in-waiting had to intervene and help me manage the household.”
“You are right my daughter. I am regretful you had to manage many responsibilities on your own. I should have noticed your struggles. Have you thought about who you want in your household?”
“Yes, Lady Laena had been assisting me, and I wish to gift Lady Laena with a title. As for the other ladies, I have not decided who to choose yet. I wish to send ravens to Great Houses.”
“That is wise. You will now have three ladies-in-waiting. Before you send ravens, I need to discuss the budget of your household with Lord Beesbury to see if you can compensate more ladies.”
“Of course, father.”
“Your Grace, the princess will need at least five ladies. Two ladies will be responsible for entertaining the princess and her guests with their talents. Although any lady will be able to entertain the princess, it is best to have two ladies active for this duty. Those ladies will also be responsible for managing the social calendar of the princess. One lady will manage the servants. One lady to manage the correspondence of the princess. One lady manages the rooms and ensures that the princess’ rooms and the rooms of the other ladies-in-waiting. One lady to manage the wardrobe of the princess.” Princess Rhaenys responded.
“This is too many ladies, your Grace. The royal coffers would not manage them all. A lot of those ladies are for frivolous things. Two ladies for entertaining the princess? The princess can entertain herself.” Otto interjected.
“That is not too many ladies, your Grace. Those ladies are also there to protect the princess should need arise. When septas of the Seven accused Queen Alysanne of sin and tried to assassinate her, it was the ladies-in-waiting of the queen that protected her. Princess Rhaenyra is the heir to the Iron Throne. She is in a very precarious position. Enemies of the crown will seek to eliminate her and discredit her character. Her guard cannot keep watch over her from the room. This will lead to rumors about her chastity and weaken her position. It is the duty of the ladies-in-waiting to sleep in the room of their mistress to call for help and protect the princess if needed. The ladies will also become tasters of the princess’ food to ensure no one will poison the princess. There are many duties the ladies-in-waiting perform for the princess.”
“I appreciate your insight, Lady Hand. You are correct. Even my mother had six ladies-in-waiting when she was not the crown princess nor married to the heir. I had always thought that one lady-in-waiting is plenty for Rhaenyra and that she is not mature to handle a full household.”
“I certainly was not mature enough to handle a household on my own when I was seven namedays, but I learnt from my mother. I appreciate that Lord Hightower has brought me a lady-in-waiting. I also appreciate the help of Lady Laena. From my discussion with Lady Bethany, I believe her to be the perfect candidate for being a lady of entertainment. Lady Bethany is a lady of many talents, and I would like to use those talents. Lady Laena will be my lady of the robes. Both ladies will manage the servants and manage the other duties while I send ravens to the Great Houses.”
“That is wise of you, but should Alicent not have a duty?”
Rhaenyra donned on her fakest smile. “You are correct, father. I will think of a duty befitting the future queen of the Seven Kingdoms.”
The King seemed pleased with the answer Rhaenyra gave before turning his attention back to Lord Hightower and Princess Rhaenys.
Rhaenyra decided to tune them out and focus on the ladies.
While Rhaenyra had no true input in having Lady Bethany in her household, she can mold her into the perfect lady-in-waiting.
Mold her into a loyal servant to the crown.
This will have to come later.
For now, Rhaenyra must focus on securing the loyalty of Lady Laena.
“Ladies, do you wish to walk in the garden after lunch? We can play Blindman’s buff. I will be the one blindfolded first and whomever I find first will be the person blindfolded after me.”
“That sounds grand, Princess!” Bethany finally seemed enthusiastic about something other than talking herself and her family up. She is still a girl of twelve namedays.
“I would like to accompany you, Princess” Laena answered.
“It would be great to get to know Lady Laena and to spend more time with my cousin and the Princess” Alicent answered.
Rhaenyra listened to the answers and finished her lunch while engaging in conversation with Ladies Bethany and Laena. Alicent would sometimes join the conversation. It was obvious she was unhappy with her having to continue being Rhaenyra’s lady-in-waiting. She was also displeased at having to play a game when pious women should not engage in childish play.
After the luncheon ended, Rhaenyra and the ladies walked and played in the garden.
Alicent had to excuse herself early due to having to commit the oath to memory for the marriage announcement tomorrow.
Alicent’s leave increased the fun.
The ladies ran around till they collapsed.
The garden was filled with chatter and laughter.
They were less inhibited.
Rhaenyra wished for cake and refreshment to be delivered. Lady Bethany insisted on going to the kitchen herself and ordering them. Initially Rhaenyra was worried since Lady Bethany is still new to the Red Keep but she eventually relented to Bethany’s demand.
Once Bethany was far enough, Laena turned to Rhaenyra “Princess, I am glad you have taken me into your household.”
“Lady Laena, were you hoping to marry the king?”
“Of course, my princess. Who would not wish to be queen.” Laena was fidgeting with the hem of her dress.
“Lady Laena. Speak plainly. I do not enjoy the pointless pleasantries the court throws my way. We are kin and I wish to be closer to you. If you wish the same, then honesty is the best route to do so.”
“I am twelve namedays. I wish to ride a dragon and run around, not marry a man who is almost my mother’s age. My father is the one who wished me to marry the king to correct the wrongs done to my mother. He was furious when I was rejected, but all I could feel was relief.”
“Thank you for your honesty, Laena. You may call me Rhaenyra in private. There is no need for saying princess all the time.”
“Thank you, Rhaenyra. I wish to be close to you too. The fire in your soul reflects my own. We are both dragons meant to soar.”
Rhaenyra smiled gently. That was the first true smile she gave anyone since her mother’s death.
“We are both dragons… And we will burn the enemies of the House of the Dragon and anyone who wishes us harm together.”
Notes:
Hi everyone! Hope you enjoyed today's chapter.
I know it took me a while to actually work on this. August is the season of my program's annual evaluations so I was busy writing my reports and preparing for my meeting. But I'm finally done with that. Now I just have to worry about my quarterly meetings 😭
Rhaenyra was very talkative in this chapter and she exposed Alicent's incompetence. I never understood how in the show she only had one lady-in-waiting, even as a child. I always got the impression that since she was very spoiled and was called the realm's delight that she should have a team of ladies and maids to wait on her and do everything for her. Anyways, I'm fixing this now.
Rhaenyra finally got her first ally. My girl was working on her own without really trusting anyone. Not that I can blame her. Now, she'll have to learn how to trust people again.
Also, Rhaenys finally made an appearance. Hope she didn't disappoint.
You can let me know your thoughts in the comments or on my Tumblr
I'm already working on chapter 6 btw, but I'm also rethinking the direction I want for the story. I didn't really follow the original outline and changed so many things. I will keep you guys updated on that front.
I'm also working on a oneshot with a somewhat competent Viserys so that's probably coming soon.

Chapter Text
Alicent POV
“Lords and Ladies of the Seven Kingdoms. It is with great pleasure I announce to you my upcoming marriage to Lady Alicent Hightower in six moons. House Hightower has been serving the Crown since the days of the Old King and has been loyal to the Crown for even longer. Lady Alicent herself has been a loyal woman to the Crown, and her friendship brought a great comfort to the Crown Princess in many trying days. I am certain she will be a wise and compassionate Queen following the example of her predecessors, including my first Queen Aemma Targaryen. We will begin celebrating the engagement today. The festivities will last a fortnight. However, before we begin, Lord Hobert Hightower, Ser Otto Hightower, and Lady Alicent Hightower have elected to swear an oath to reiterate their loyalty to the Crown Princess.”
“Hereby before the Honorable King, the Crown Princess, the council, and the court, I, Lord Hobert of House Hightower, Lord of Oldtown, and Defender of the Citadel, uncle to the future queen of the Seven Kingdoms, swear that for the event of Alicent Hightower begetting a son for the King, I will not influence the King nor the Lords of the Seven Kingdoms, to depose the Crown Princess, Rhaenyra Targaryen, from her position and replace her with the son of my niece. Should I commit this treason, then may the Seven strike me down. May the Seven strike down the members of my house and erase my bloodline from this world. May the Crown take away the title bestowed upon my house and bestow it upon a more deserving house. I will follow this oath from today to the end of my days. I will ensure that the members of my house will honor the oath in my stead to the end of their days. So help me the gods.”
Uncle Hobert stepped back while my father stepped forward to swear the oath.
“Hereby before the Honorable King, the Crown Princess, the council and the court, I, Ser Otto...”
Alicent tuned out the rest of the oath.
The edges of Alicent’s vision were blurry and the light was too bright.
Everything feels foreign.
Her face is not her own.
Her tongue, as she was swearing the oath, is not her own.
She cannot even comprehend the words going out of her mouth.
Her body is heavy, and she is sweating a lot.
The oath is making everything final.
Even her uncle and her father seem defeated. They had tried to talk about how to get around the oath, but it is airtight and there are no loopholes they can go around.
They have reached the conclusion that they can have another House fight for the rightful place of her future son. However, the involvement, or lack thereof, of House Hightower will not inspire confidence in their allies to act on their behalf.
Alicent cannot help but feel dread at the uncertainty of the future.
Things used to be much simpler before that accursed council meeting.
She does not understand why Rhaenyra behaved that way.
Where was the girl who fought for Alicent and wished for a male heir for her father?
Why is she not fighting for Alicent now?
Flashback
“Look at her dress. She wore it twice in the same week. Does she not own other dresses?” someone whispered nearby.
“I guess her father cannot afford to buy her new dresses. He is still a second son even if he is the Hand.”
At that reminder, everyone in the group giggled.
“Ladies, ladies, let us calm ourselves. It is improper to insult those who are less fortunate.” The ladies stopped pretending to whisper. “But truly I feel terrible for the princess that she must suffer the incompetence of the daughter of a second son. She was not raised to be a lady-in-waiting for a princess. How can such a girl know what jewelry and fabrics will fit the princess? Does she even design the dresses the princess wear?”
“That’s not the most important thing, my ladies. Anyone can learn how to perform on a job but I wonder if she has any exceptional talents.”
The voices are getting harder to ignore.
“I have not heard of her having any talents, rather she only studies and prays. Sometimes she walks with the princess in the gardens. I also heard from my aunt that the queen commissions her ladies to help the princess.”
Alicent still tries to pretend that she didn’t hear anything and tried to focus on reading her book.
“That is true. My cousin is one of the queen’s ladies in waiting and she told me the princess needs more ladies in waiting but the king always refuses the queen’s request.”
“Lady Alicent, fancy seeing you in the queen’s gardens.”
The ladies moved closer and are now towering over Alicent.
“Lady Aiana, I hope you are enjoying your time in the red keep.” Alicent stood up and bowed down to the ladies. Ignoring that lady Aiana and her entourage did not bow to her. Alicent had to be courteous to that wench since she is the only daughter of Lord Tyrell.
“I am enjoying my stay. Spring is lovely. The gardens are truly beautiful. Queen Aemma has an eye for beauty.”
“The queen’s garden always calm my mind. I read my books here every day.”
“Of course you do, lady Alicent. This does make me wonder where the princess is. I had assumed that as her lady, you would accompany her everywhere instead of reading in the garden.”
“I do accompany the princess everywhere save for her lessons with the queen and her dragon flights.”
“You do not attend all her lessons?”
‘Rhaenyra did ask me to accompany her, but father said those lessons are useless. Queen Aemma is incompetent and there is nothing she can teach me. But I cannot say that to the ladies. They might tattle to the king.’
“The queen loves spending time with the princess alone and I do not wish to intrude.”
The ladies shared brief glances with one another.
“I am certain that is the true reason you do not attend those lessons.”
“Are you insinuating something, my Lady?”
Lady Margery, from House Beesbury, gave a look of disdain to Alicent. The other ladies were giving Alicent looks of amusement and disdain.
‘Why are they looking at me like that? We are all from the Reach. Why do they dislike me so?’
“Lady Alicent, it is no secret that the only reason why you are the only Lady of Princess Rhaenyra is because you are the daughter of the Hand. We have been watching you and you leave the princess on her own outside of her lessons and dragon rides. You are not worthy of the role you have. However, I cannot fault you for your unworthiness. Over-reaching does not help those who are not prepared for the task.”
“M my, my lady” Alicent stammered.
“Lady Aiana, Lady Margery, Lady Breonna, and Lady Kiara. It is lovely seeing you in the Red Keep.” Everyone’s head snapped to look at the source.
Seeing that it was the princess, the ladies bowed deeply to her.
“Princess! It is an honor to join you in celebration of your tenth nameday.”
“My heart is gladdened as well to see many Lords and Ladies travel from afar to bring me gifts and celebrate.” Rhaenyra smiled sharply.
“Of course, your Highness. There is only one realm’s delight. We could not miss the celebration.”
“Thank you, my lady. Would you and the other ladies like to join me and my dear friend Alicent tomorrow for tea and cake in the garden?”
None of the ladies missed the emphasis that Alicent is a friend to the princess.
Vindication is rising in Alicent’s chest.
“Of course, princess. We would be honored to join you.”
Rhaenyra continued charming the ladies. The ladies included Alicent more in the conversation in fear of disappointing the princess.
When the following day arrived, Rhaenyra loaned Alicent the necklace she was wearing the previous day. A clear sign that Rhaenyra values Alicent and that any slight against her is a slight against Rhaenyra.
End of flashback
Alicent misses those days. The memory of her youth strengthens Alicent’s resolve and assures her that she can return to those days. She only needs to return to the good graces of the princess.
The Princess will eventually understand that Alicent obeyed Otto when he told to go to the king’s chambers.
Alicent had also obeyed her father when he told her she will be the only lady-in-waiting for the Princess. It was a lot of work and Rhaenyra was very demanding. She always changed her wardrobe for the smallest occasion and would ignore Alicent’s talk of modesty and not wasting the gold dragons of the crown on frivolous things.
Rhaenyra had initially annoyed Alicent. Everything about Rhaenyra was unbearable. Her love for dragons. Her regular flights. Her being spoiled by everyone in the Red Keep. However, her obliviousness regarding her position as a Princess and her kindness towards Alicent and the servants had won Alicent over.
Having the Princess’ favor also helped Alicent. Outside of protecting her from the ladies of the court, she would allow Alicent to try on her dresses and her jewelry. She had only refused to allow Alicent to wear Targaryen heirlooms. Alicent can wear those heirlooms now, so she lost nothing except for the Princess’ favor.
The early days were hard but eventually Alicent and Rhaenyra became close friends. They can become close friends again.
Looking back at her memories, Alicent realized that she did learn a lot from the Queen’s Ladies. The Queen had fifteen Ladies. While they helped a lot in taking care of the Princess, Alicent believes that ten of those Ladies should not be in the service of the Queen. Five Ladies were sufficient.
Rhaenyra got her impractical behavior from Queen Aemma. May the Seven have mercy on her soul.
‘I am certain that Rhaenyra would understand me when she hears what happened from me instead of those vile rumors. I had only obeyed my father when he told me to comfort the king. I just need to talk with Rhaenyra alone.’
Rhaenyra POV
The Lords and Ladies of the court were unsurprised of the King’s announcement. They only gave polite claps, but no one cheered.
The rumors regarding the King taking Alicent as a mistress were rampant.
If there is one thing Rhaenyra learnt from her mother and her uncle in the limited time they spent together, it is that the people of King’s Landing, regardless of station, are important. Her mother believed everyone should be treated with kindness and respect. She was a great queen when she was allowed to be. Her uncle believed that everyone could be wielded against his enemies. Even Rhaenyra at times.
With time, Rhaenyra learnt that both her mother and uncle were correct.
People deserve to be treated with kindness and respect even if they were not her equal. This respect could be revoked in the event of it being abused.
People can also be used as a weapon against her enemies if wielded correctly.
Rhaenyra will use those lessons without repeating her mother’s and uncle’s mistakes. Both were genuine to people. They showed their true selves without inhibition, which led to their downfall.
Ladies of the court would smile to her mother’s face while badmouthing her behind her back. When Rhaenyra was a child, she used to get angry at those wenches. Her mother would preach forgiveness even to those who suffer no consequences.
As for her uncle, he made enemies left and right due to not being able to treat others with diplomacy when the occasion arises. It was the hate and fear of his enemies that convinced the King to name her heir.
No Rhaenyra will not repeat their mistakes.
Not everyone deserves kindness and understanding. Rhaenyra will not suffer traitors again. She will not trust people blindly again. She does not owe anyone her true self unless they prove to be trustworthy.
Looking at Alicent, Rhaenyra was pleased to see her sweating with reddened cuticles. She had not tore them yet but she will soon.
Alicent is trying to smile at the Lords and Ladies of the court. No one had pretended that they do not despise Alicent for being the King’s mistress.
Rhaenyra began moving towards Alicent, which silenced everyone.
“Lady Hightower! I hear that congratulations are in order. You have secured a great match. I am only saddened that I could not secure your match as my duty. However, it is not too late to help you in your endeavors since you will continue to be my lady-in-waiting until your marriage. I will be sending you books about courtly manners so that you learn how to address the court when there are big announcements.”
Alicent’s face reddened and her eyes glanced around at the people surrounding them.
‘No one here expects me to help you with anything. People will talk for days about how benevolent and naïve the Crown Princess is’
“Princess Rhaenyra, would you do me the honor of talking in private?”
“Of course, my Lady!”
Rhaenyra and Alicent arrived in a small room near the council meeting room.
“Rhaenyra, I hope you understand that the position my father placed me in. I never wished to hurt you or replace your mother. I had only wished to offer comfort to you and the King in your grief. I can only offer my apologies for the misunderstanding and assure you that nothing untoward happened between us.”
Rhaenyra held both of the Alicent’s hands in hers.
“Alicent, I understand. I was surprised at the meeting and acted inappropriately but I understand that we must obey our fathers first. I was only saddened you did not trust me to tell me earlier.”
“Of course I trust you. Rhaenyra, you’re my sister. I was surprised too when the king announced his intention to wed me. My father was oddly in a good mood prior to the meeting and commanded me to wear my mother’s dress. Mayhaps the King discussed the engagement with him before the meeting.”
“Alicent, I believe you” ‘Not, you lying bitch’ “Now onto more important matters. It is of utmost importance for you to uphold the image of the crown. You need to get more elaborate dresses and change your wardrobe. You will also need to buy jewelry befitting a Queen. Since your family is not paying a dowry, it would only make sense to have you responsible for your wardrobe.”
“I have been wearing my mother’s dresses.”
“Alicent, your mother’s dresses are out of fashion. You now represent the House of the Dragon. You need to look the image.”
“My father would never agree to this.”
“You can ask your uncle. He seems to be a wise man who will surly understand the need to maintain the image of the Crown.”
Alicent seemed apprehensive about Rhaenyra’s suggestion, but that is to be expected of a girl who never went against her father even when commanded to commit improper actions.
“I… I guess I can try asking him. He will be more understanding.”
“I am glad to see you taking my suggestions seriously. You will soon outrank your father. He should not be too prideful and hurt your image.”
Alicent mumbled her thanks but then perked up. “About the jewelry, would I not gain access to the Targaryen heirlooms after marriage? Maybe I can wear a few of them. It would show that I have assimilated to my husband’s house.”
“Oh Alicent, that would not be possible.” Rhaenyra said remorsefully.
“What do you mean? Every other Queen wore the heirlooms. You are not a Queen yet you wear them.”
“Alicent, those are family heirlooms. Lady Hand mentioned that father would need to lock the heirlooms from you because you do not have Valyrian blood. Every Queen, other than Ceryse, had Valyrian blood. I am so sorry Alicent.”
Alicent looked disheartened. Rhaenyra can see now that Alicent had always felt inferior since she is not Valyrian and cannot be afforded the same liberties that a princess of the blood has.
Her mother had warned Rhaenyra of Alicent’s jealousy but Rhaenyra’s love for her friend blinded her. She was like father to the former Lord Hand.
‘Damn those Hightower snakes!’
“Thank you for being honest with me. I will relay the urgent need for a new wardrobe to my uncle.”
“Anytime, Alicent. You are a very dear friend to me. I will meet you in the morrow to begin your lessons.”
Notes:
Hi everyone!
I used my long weekend to bring you today's chapter!
Announcements were made and oaths had been sworn 😀
You also got a sneak peak on Rhaenyra's childhood with Alicent. Not gonna lie, I felt bad for Alicent for the bullying. I tried to imply that this was a regular occurrence in her childhood.
I also worked on the story's outline and the end is clear or at least the plot points are. I still think I want to finish working on my oneshot before I start writing the future chapters for this story.
Let me know your thoughts in the comments!
Chapter 7: Please read author's note in the beginning. There are trigger warnings.
Notes:
Hi everyone,
So this chapter has a few sensitive topics mentioned. I don't think I wrote anything too explicit by my standards but the elements are still there and I tagged accordingly. If you are uncomfortable with the new tags, then I would advise you to skip this chapter. I will give a short summary of what happened in the notes at the end so that you'll stay in the loop.
New tags: Westerosi Matrimonial Bedding Tradition. Humiliation. Situational Humiliation. Failed non-con? Sexual Assault. Coercion. Impotency. Drugging. Chemical Castration. Cousin Incest Elements.

Chapter Text
Rhaenyra POV
Life has been hectic during the previous moons. Now that the royal wedding is taking place, Rhaenyra hopes that her burdens will ease.
Rhaenyra has been tasked with teaching Alicent royal etiquette and how to manage a royal household. She was also tasked with, or rather ordered to, make preparations for the royal wedding. On top of all that, Rhaenyra has to manage her duties as heir and the duties of the queen while wielding none of the power for both positions.
Alicent has been uncooperative for the most part. She was originally fine with learning from Rhaenyra until she realized that Laena and Bethany were also expected to learn, then she became offended that she was treated the same as girls who were new ladies-in-waiting. Rhaenyra had to remind Alicent that she had the chance to learn when Rhaenyra was learning from her mother, but that Alicent always claimed that her prayers are more important. Alicent would then pretend that she never was invited.
Not only did Alicent have an issue with Rhaenyra’s lessons, but she also had an issue with Rhaenyra getting new ladies-in-waiting. However, this was the first time that Alicent had cause to be angry.
Lady Margery Beesbury and Lady Aiana Tyrell joined Rhaenyra’s household two moons before the royal wedding was to take place. Neither of the ladies dared mock Alicent to her face, but they had no issues spreading rumors about her. Rumors that were not completely untrue.
Alicent ignored Rhaenyra’s lessons? Alicent thinks herself to be above the princess.
Alicent went to watch knights practice and gave them praise after practice? Alicent flirted with men openly without shame.
Alicent asking if one of Rhaenyra’s ladies would like to be a lady-in-waiting for her when she becomes the queen? Alicent is trying to buy the loyalty of Rhaenyra’s ladies and have them spy on the princess.
Rhaenyra must admit that both ladies have a talent for storytelling.
Laena was approaching. “Princess, do you have a minute?”
“Yes, I do. Let us talk there.” Rhaenyra led Laena to a corner.
“The king drank the tonic yesterday. His health will surely improve from now on.”
“It is a relief to hear that, especially since the king fell ill yesterday. The grandmaester said it’s due to exhaustion combined with wedding jitters. I hope we would see its effect tonight. You know that nothing matters to me more than the king’s health.”
‘It is a relief that Laena remembered to speak in code while in public. Lessons about privacy and the walls having ears has paid off.’
“Laenor told the merchant that he will suffer consequences should the tonic not work.”
“Good. Good. I sincerely thank you and Laenor. I will never forget your help, and I will compensate you accordingly like we agreed.”
“We merely wish to serve the crown.” Laena looked ecstatic at the praise she received.
“IT IS NOW TIME FOR THE BEDDING CEREMONY!”
Ormund Hightower was the first man to touch his cousin. He took off her crown and veil, then he began unlacing her dress. More men joined in touching Alicent. Alicent herself shrunk onto herself. The sight disgusted Rhaenyra.
Despite her hate towards Alicent and her betrayal, Rhaenyra fought against the bedding ceremony. Alicent agreed with Rhaenyra and went against Otto. Princess Rhaenys was also against the idea under the guise of preserving the king’s dignity and reminding everyone that this is an Andal tradition and they are Valyrians. The majority of the small council supported Rhaenys. However, the opinion of Hightower men had more sway on the king.
This loss devastated Rhaenyra since it confirmed that despite gaining influence over her father’s decisions, when her ideas do not align with what he wants, he would not follow them. He wanted to show off his young wife.
Anyhow, Rhaenyra will do what Alysanne failed to do and will abolish this disgusting tradition when she is queen. It does not matter whether it will take her a year or twenty, she will abolish it.
“Princess, if you wish you can stand there.” Ser Harwin Strong pointed to a spot. “You would not have a good view of the bedding there, therefore you can claim you watched it.”
Rhaenyra is one of the people who must confirm that Alicent bled as Ser Otto requested.
Rhaenyra smiled. “Thank you, Ser Harwin, for your consideration.”
“Of course, your Grace. I, myself, am a follower of the Old Gods and do not wish to entertain those barbaric traditions of the Andals.”
“I wish to be done with traditions that demean women, not just Andal traditions. Every culture and religion demean women, not just the Andals. There are a few Valyrian traditions that I am glad we do not practice after the Doom.” Rhaenyra said passionately before realizing she was not talking with one of her ladies. “Of course, I can never say that in front of the court or my father. It would be a great favor to myself if you do not mention that. I can only admit this to the few people whom I trust.
“I am grateful to have your Grace’s trust.” Harwin said, with a deep voice that made Rhaenyra fluster.
“Why don’t you tell me about Harrenhal, Ser Harwin? I will visit Harrenhal during my royal progress and the last time I was there, I was only a child.”
The redirection worked and Ser Harwin began talking. The truth is that Rhaenyra has been keeping an eye on him. He may look like a rough man, but something about him soothes Rhaenyra.
Ser Harwin was talking about Harrenhal, about the curse and the people who live there. Despite Rhaenyra paying attention to what he was saying, she was not entirely distracted from what was happening.
Harwin was right when he said that Rhaenyra will not have a good view of the bedding; however, she can still see everything that was happening before they get to the bed and can hear the lewd jokes being thrown.
Alicent was fully naked yet the men’s hands did not leave her skin. The bedding ceremony is the only time where men can touch women wherever and however they wish without any repercussions.
Alicent and the king finally arrived at the bed and Rhaenyra can only see the top of their heads.
As time went on, the cheers died down.
“Ser Harwin, I expect you to offer a proposal during my stay in Harrenhal. If you do not, I will be severely disappointed and if one of my ladies pleases you, let me know and I will arrange something.” Rhaenyra said just as murmurs erupted. “Now, I wish to see what is happening since I doubt that the bedding ceremony will be this quiet if everything is alright.”
“Perhaps, the lady, I mean the queen, did not bleed?”
Rhaenyra gave Harwin a sly smile. “Do not let Andals hear you say that. The queen is a pious woman who never rode a horse. If she does not bleed, the queen will be forced to walk by the Faith.”
Rhaenyra went closer to the bed to see what the issue was. Ser Harwin followed closely.
“Bethany!” Rhaenyra called out. Upon hearing her name, Bethany ran to Rhaenyra. “What is the issue with the bedding? Why did everyone quiet down.”
Bethany blushed. “Princess. They’re all waiting on the king. He… he is not performing.”
“What do you mean he is not performing?”
“I I mean.. umm.” Bethany stammered.
“Bethany, I do not have all day. Is something wrong with my father?” Rhaenyra asked with a hint of urgency. Some might believe that the princess has concern for her father, but there are darker reasons for her anticipation.
“It’s his Grace’s manhood, my Princess. He cannot take the queen’s maidenhead until he is ready.”
“Oh” Rhaenyra understood the implication of what Bethany meant. The tonic worked perfectly.
Rhaenyra’s eyes scanned the room until they fell on the Velaryon twins. Laena gave Rhaenyra a smile while Laenor looked like he would rather be anywhere else.
Rhaenyra spent a lot of time with Laena and Laenor until they became the siblings she never had. They talked about life, Valyrian religion and traditions, and future plans. Those plans included what to do with future sons and daughters of Alicent, including potentially giving Alicent moon tea or putting tansy in her food.
Laenor mentioned that sailors had once spoke to him of a tonic from the Free Cities that if taken by a man, he would be rendered impotent. The man would have difficulty in becoming hard and his seed would be water-like. This specific tonic was made for male slaves and prostitutes so that they would not have sex with ladies and if they did, their seed would not take.
Rhaenyra became interested in the idea that she can prevent future pregnancies by stopping the source. Women are often blamed for fertility issues, but this tonic would ensure that her father know that it is him that is flawed and never her mother.
The bedding ceremony would ensure that the entire realm knows of her father’s deficiencies. However, Rhaenyra still despises the tradition and wishes that she prevented it.
“Everyone! The king is tired. Let his Grace and the queen retire. However, the night is still young so we can continue the festivities.” Princess Rhaenyra said, hoping to fix the situation. It was too late though. Everyone witnessed the king’s shame and news of it will spread to the Seven Kingdoms.
The following day
Rhaenyra is stuck breaking her fast with everyone. The king, the Hightowers, the Velaryons, and Rhaenyra’s ladies. None can discuss the wedding due to the bedding ceremony incident.
The Hightowers and the king are beyond embarrassed and humiliated while Corlys Velaryon looks like a cat that captured a mouse. Vindication and smugness marred his face. Even Rhaenys, who hated the idea of Laena marrying the king, looked a little pleased. Ladies Margery and Aiana were happy at the humiliation that Alicent had to endure yet they masked their true feelings in front of the king. Laena and Laenor were happy that their plans worked. Bethany was upset that her cousin faced humiliation especially since it was not Alicent’s fault.
Rhaenyra finally decided to break the silence. “Father, I have finalized the preparations for the royal progress and Lord Beesbury approved of my expenses. We can begin the progress tomorrow.”
“That’s good. Make sure to send me ravens of the proposals you received and where you are.”
“I will, father.” Rhaenyra turned to the queen. “I wonder if your Grace is ready for the queen’s responsibilities in my absence? I will postpone my journey if you need more time to adjust.”
“I learnt a lot from you princess. I am certain I will manage the royal household well.” While Alicent’s words inspire confidence, her despondent demeanor does not.
Rhaenyra nods twice in Alicent’s direction before turning back to her father. “Uncle Daemon sent a raven telling me that my household and I should stay with him for a few days when I reach the Vale.”
“Do what you wish. I was planning on lifting the exile in the following days so you might as well let him know and come back with you if he wishes.”
“Thank you, father! Have you thought about the situation at the Stepstones?”
“Princess, let us not discuss politics at the table.” Ser Otto said before the king can answer, which earned him a glare from the king.
“The Stepstones situation is the reason why I am calling back prince Daemon. I will appoint my brother as Master of War and have him devise plans to deal with the pirates.”
Rhaenys has trained the king well. Moons of her being Lady Hand and the king began calling Rhaenyra and Daemon by their official title more in front of people. He also gained confidence in Daemon’s capabilities after Rhaenys broke down what Daemon did right and wrong in the different positions he was given. Rhaenys was honest and impartial. This honesty led to the king realizing that his brother wasn’t the incompetent whoremonger Otto led him to believe. Rhaenys also taught the king to never criticize Rhaenyra in public as to not weaken her position.
“I will be grateful to have prince Daemon’s assistance. I have no wish for war, but if things persisted, the realm would suffer a loss.” Lord Corlys used the same tone Otto uses whenever he wishes to influence the king. This infuriates the Hightower to no end.
“Princess, will you take all your ladies with you on the progress? Queen Alicent needs a few ladies.”
“What happened to the ladies the queen sent for?”
“Oh, I haven’t had the chance to send ravens to anyone. I thought that maybe lady Laena would like to join my household after the wedding.” Alicent said with that sweet smile of hers.
“I’m certain the princess can spare more than one lady to help you, your Grace.” Lord Hobert Hightower joined the conversation.
“Ser Otto, why didn’t you advise the queen on sending ravens to the realms or request the ladies before the plans for the progress has been finalized? The crown already requested permission from the ladies’ families to go on the progress. The progress is also a great opportunity for ladies to meet lords available for marriage.” Rhaenys said sharply.
“Unfortunately, Ser Otto, I cannot spare any my ladies to the queen. I can let the queen borrow some of my maids. They helped me greatly when I had no ladies.” Rhaenyra finished the conversation with that and the awkward silence returned.
One week later
Rhaenyra has been on the royal progress for days now and she is finally free of the stifling environment of the Red Keep.
From what Rhaenyra heard, her father still had been unable to take Alicent’s maidenhead. Not for lack of trying.
The Hightowers overstayed their welcome, trying to provide support for Alicent.
There was a slightly disturbing rumor of Otto trying to set Rhaenyra with Gwayne. He even sent Gwayne back to Oldtown with instructions to return with the royal progress.
Rhaenyra was forced by her father to leave one of her ladies for Alicent, promising her that she will get the lady back when she returns to the Red Keep. She knows he will keep that promise. She left Aiana Tyrell.
Out of all Rhaenyra’s ladies, Lady Aiana Tyrell hates the Hightowers the most. Rhaenyra had to talk to her about her treatment of Bethany in the beginning and reminded Aiana that Bethany is only a child and does not deserve any hate yet. Rhaenyra cannot have anyone saying that she does not take care of her ladies. Especially since Bethany has been unwittingly sharing secrets.
The Tyrells have cause to hate the Hightowers. The Hightowers have always overreached and hid behind the Faith. The moment Otto became Lord Hand, the possibility of house Tyrell being usurped by house Hightower became a possibility. With Alicent’s marriage to the king, this possibility became more tangible. If a Hightower king sat upon the Iron Throne, then house Hightower will not accept being under anyone’s authority, including their Lord Paramount.
Aiana Tyrell will make life difficult for Alicent and keep Rhaenyra updated on the happenstances of the Red Keep.
For now, Rhaenyra will continue her progress and listen to the rumors about the wedding.
What kind of a woman is Alicent Hightower if she cannot even arouse her husband?
Did you hear? The king couldn’t get it up for the Hightower girl. I wonder if it is true that he took her maidenhead before marriage and that this is only the gods showing their anger for this false marriage.
I heard that the king did not wish for a bedding ceremony, yet Alicent Hightower insisted. He did not have a bedding ceremony in his wedding to Queen Aemma. Mayhaps Alicent Hightower is the man in this marriage and that is why the king could not get aroused.
This is merely a punishment from the gods. The king married a girl whose maidenhead he took before Queen Aemma’s death. I have also heard that the Queen’s death was not natural rather the king ordered it. He did not believe the gods would punish him by taking his son with her.
If I had not seen the king and Prince Daemon fuck whores in their youth with my own eyes, I would have thought the king was always impotent. The king had especially loved it when other men would watch him fuck a tight hole and cheer for him. The king was never exceptional in anything, but this? This was the only thing he was good at.
Notes:
Hi everyone,
I hope everyone enjoyed the chapter. I tried to not write anything explicit, but I still wanted to show some disturbing elements of that society. Especially with the Hightowers wanting to show off and follow Andal traditions in every way possible. The bedding ceremony is a way to bring back old traditions to the crown. Of course, they didn't think it wouldn't work in their favor.
Now, if you skipped this chapter, here is the awaited summary.
- The setting is the royal wedding between the Vizzy and Alicent.
- The POV is Rhaenyra's where she thinks on all her responsibilities and how she tried to fight against the bedding ceremony. She wasn't the only one who didn't want the bedding ceremony, even Alicent didn't want it. In the end, she lost this fight because old man Vizzy wanted to show off his young, hot wife.
- Rhaenyra also got new ladies-in-waiting. Aiana Tyrell and Margery Beesbury. They confronted Alicent in the flashback.
- Harwin and Rhaenyra have a positive interaction where they criticize the bedding ceremony.
- The bedding ceremony starts, but Vizzy couldn't do it because he was drugged with a tonic that made him impotent. Both Vizzy and the Hightowers were humiliated.
- Daemon's exile was finally lifted, but he doesn't actually make an appearance yet.
- Rhaenyra was forced to leave Aiana Tyrell in the Red Keep when she went on the royal progress to find a husband. Also, Otto started to try to make Rhaenyra marry Gwayne. Man wants his Hightower king but he already has a Hightower king.
- Delicious rumors at the end? That's everything important that happened imo. I hope I didn't miss anything, but if you read the chapter and you think I forgot something important, let me know in the comments so that I'd update the summary.
I hope you guys enjoyed the story so far. There are three chapters left (I think) and I hope that the story ends on a positive note that won't disappoint you. I still wanted to incorporate some dark elements because that's what HOTD is about and with everything going on right now all over the world, we need to face those dark elements. Of course, if they're traumatizing for you, I don't want to derail your recovery (hopefully?) which is why I over-tagged a bit and I wrote the note in the beginning.
Good news I got this week is that the Ozone layer is recovering and that there's a cure for Huntington's disease now so yaaaay some wins!!
I also hope that you guys enjoyed Vizzy becoming impotent. I tried my best to be creative about how they couldn't conceive and I thought that Vizzy not being able to perform would be great irony for him.
Chapter Text
Viserys Targaryen POV
The Red Keep has been a prison as of late.
A prison of judgement and ridicule.
The events of the blue wedding have spread throughout the kingdom.
Only rumors had been born out of that wedding. Rumors that are growing more scandalous by day.
The council and the white knights try their best to shelter Viserys from those rumors. Of course, no one dares utter false rumors in front of him because he is the king. Yet the whispers still reach him.
The public sentiment seems to be more negative towards Alicent, than towards Viserys. But there are still those who are astounded at the fact he could not perform when there was a young woman in front of him. There are those wondering if that was a punishment from the gods, because what man would not be excited by such a body?
Sometimes Viserys wonders the same…
At the beginning, Viserys wished to defend Alicent. She is his wife and a man must defend his woman at all cost. It is what he had with Aemma despite her failure. However, as moons went by and Viserys continued being unable to perform his husbandly duties, he is unable to view Alicent as his wife anymore. To him, she is merely his daughter’s lady-in-waiting who seduced him into marrying her. It also does not help that Viserys did try to fulfill his duties. Oh, he had tried so hard. Alas nothing he did yielded results. The manly urges he had prior to the blue wedding are no longer present and he can no longer act upon them. Viserys had especially resisted Alicent as to not pressure her before marriage.
Viserys also cannot defend Alicent without defending himself and his pride will not allow him to admit to the court that he can no longer perform. Especially when half the kingdom saw him perform before Aemma’s death.
Oh, Aemma’s death had destroyed him.
The events of Aemma’s death, losing Baelon, and the blue wedding hardened Viserys. The only good thing that came out of these hardships is that they opened his eyes to the people around him. Viserys understands the council, the Velaryons, the Hightowers, and even his daughter better.
His council has always had the best intentions for their king and the kingdom. Their decisions may not always yield the best results. Their good intentions are still noted.
His council improved after Rhaenys became Lady Hand. Her decisions are always practical and wise. It came from her experience being in her husband’s seat when Corly is in sea. Viserys wishes that he had listened to her when she opposed the bedding ceremony.
The only thing missing from the small council is Otto, his dearest friend.
The friendship between Otto and Viserys is damaged.
The fault lies with Alicent of course.
After Viserys announced his engagement to Alicent, it came to him that he must not show favor to one house over the others. This led to the dismissal of Otto as Hand although Viserys has kept him on the council. This was the beginning of the troubles between them since Otto began to distance himself from Viserys, believing that Viserys betrayed him. Viserys had also blindly trusted that Otto raised Alicent right and did not think Alicent would be a fallen woman.
Viserys trusted Otto enough to let that person be raised alongside his only daughter, ignoring Aemma’s warnings. It is a miracle that Rhaenyra did not turn out to be like Alicent but mayhaps, Alicent’s incompetence as lady-in-waiting saved his little girl. Despite this, Viserys cannot trust that Alicent’s influence on Rhaenyra is minimal and that Rhaenyra would not be corrupted in the future. Viserys pressured Rhaenyra to include Alicent and teach her the duties of a queen. They’re both still in contact with one another despite the wedding. The acolytes confirmed that Alicent is sending ravens to Rhaenyra regularly. The most concerning part is that Rhaenyra is sending back replies. Due to that, Viserys needs to marry Rhaenyra off as soon as she comes back from the progress. He will have Rhaenyra married even if she did not choose anyone.
All Viserys have to do now is wait for Rhaenyra to come back to arrange her marriage.
Right now, he has bigger concerns.
“Your Grace, I cannot annul the marriage when the queen has no fault. The maesters checked and the queen’s maidenhead was intact before the marriage.” Gunther Florent, the High Septon, looked exacerbated.
“She is not the queen. She is merely a woman who tricked me into marriage. I have never failed to perform once yet the moment I try to fuck her, I am unable to do so? The gods have cursed me for this marriage.”
“Your Grace, there are many men who become unable to perform following the loss of a loved one. Mayhaps the only fault of this marriage is how hastily it had been. We are not out of the mourning period for the former queen. We should have followed the mourning period as the gods dictated yet the Faith allowed this marriage to occur due to the need for heirs. We admit our faults in this. Your wife had not done anything to deserve such anger for our mistake.”
At this, anger left Viserys and a sense of helplessness began to take over. “What should I do, your Holiness? You admit fault yet you will not annul the marriage.”
“To offset the hastiness of the marriage, we must not be haste in annulling the marriage. During that time, you should still attempt to perform your husbandly duty. Mayhaps the consumption of alcohol would help you find your wife appealing enough to be a husband.”
“What if she never appeals to me? Will you annul my marriage then?”
“Should your marriage with Alicent Hightower fails to be consummated in two years then the marriage will be annulled. The gods would have witnessed your Grace and Alicent Hightower being true to your vows, but the marriage did not yield fruits and will forgive us for the annulment.”
‘Two years are too long. Mayhaps this would strengthen Rhaenyra’s position if she married and had an heir prior to my annulment. Then no child of mine would threaten her.’
“Thank you for your time, your Holiness. I will follow your recommendations and will continue performing my duty. Should Alicent fail to fall pregnant within the two years, the marriage better be annulled or I will set her aside to marry a more suitable lady.”
The High Septon agreed with what Viserys said, then excused himself.
Viserys went to visit the queen’s rooms. He drank some wine following the High Septon’s recommendation to the letter.
Time to perform his duty… or try to do so.
Otto Hightower POV
The High Septon has been talking with the king for a while now.
Otto was not informed why the king needed to meet with the High Septon. Although, according to Mellos, no one in the council is aware of the meeting.
Nothing good can yield from the king requesting a private meeting with the High Septon. Otto can only surmise that it is about the bedding ceremony.
No one understands what happened the wedding night and how the king was suddenly unable to perform when he had no issues before. Otto tried to take advantage and spread rumors about the legitimacy of Rhaenyra, yet no one believed those rumors, and they did not spread as wild as the rumors regarding Alicent. People still remembered when the king fucked his whores in public.
Otto cannot spread rumors about Rhaenyra nor suppress the rumors about the Alicent. The only advantage Otto still has is his strong relationship with the Faith and the Citadel.
“Announcing the arrival of his Holiness, the High Septon, Gunther Florent.” The white knight called out.
Gunther looked very grave. Without any prompt, he began talking. “The king wishes to annul his marriage to Alicent due to believing her to be a fallen woman who caused the gods to curse him. I managed to convince him to stay in the marriage for two years. If Alicent does not get pregnant, the marriage will be annulled.”
“How would Alicent get pregnant if the king cannot perform his duty? Six moons have already passed. We do not have a lot of time left.”
“It matters not how or who impregnates Alicent. Just get her pregnant. I had told the king to drink alcohol beforehand so if we ensure he’s drunk, we can convince him that he has slept with her. The Faith will back you even if the child looks like Alicent.” Gunther said. “Just figure it out by yourself and do not involve the Faith in the planning, Otto.”
“I understand, Septon Gunther.” Hobert took the reins of the conversation. “You must protect the image of the Faith just as we need to protect the image of house Hightower. If this marriage is annulled, not only will house Hightower suffer but so will the Faith.”
“I will talk with Alicent about this tomorrow. We will try to find a Valyrian man who resembles the king. If we cannot find anyone, then we may have a Hightower impregnate Alicent. At least the future king will be fully Hightower in this case.” Otto interrupted.
“That is a great idea, brother. I will send Ormund to the Red Keep to stay in my stead. He already has children so his seed is strong.”
“This concludes this issue then. Keep us updated regarding this matter. I will return to Old Town with lord Hobert I assume?” Gunther looked at Hobert, who nodded in agreement.
“Yes, I already informed the king that I will return to Old Town in time for the princess’ arrival. I will leave in the morrow after I bid my niece goodbye.”
The Florent and Hightower men drank wine together and discussed lighter matters.
Alicent Hightower POV
The sun rays penetrated the curtains and awoke Alicent up.
Alicent was still sore from the king’s visit. He attempted his husbandly duty but, as usual, nothing came out of the night. The only difference between last night and every other night was that he had wine on his breath and was more cruel to her.
The doors suddenly opened. Lady Aiana entered, with a group of servants, without ensuring her mistress is decent.
“AIANA!! Did I not tell you to stop entering my room without alerting me first?”
“Good morrow, your Grace. I hope you had an uneventful night” Aiana smirked.
“Do not ignore my question! Would you ever treat Rhaenyra like this?”
“My apologies, your Grace. Your father summoned you to discuss important matters. Your uncle will leave for Oldtown today. Next time, I will ignore the summons.”
‘That little brat! She knows I cannot disobey my father. She still should have knocked to ensure I was decent… whatever, she is Rhaenyra’s issue. For now, I need to send more ravens for ladies.’
“That is alright, lady Aiana. Thank you for informing me of the meeting. You can leave now with the servants. I need to dress myself.”
“Nonsense, your Grace. Your father said he needs you to talk with you right now. You unfortunately do not have enough time to wait so we will help you dress.”
Not for the first time, Aiana Tyrell disregarded what Alicent told her and acted in a manner that is humiliating Alicent. When Alicent requested one of Rhaenyra’s ladies, she and her father were hoping for Laena Velaryon to stay behind. Laena is the closest to Rhaenyra and with the most influence. If Alicent managed to win her, the Hightowers would have gained a powerful ally. However, the king let Rhaenyra decide whom to leave behind and unfortunately, Alicent is now saddled with someone who hates her.
The male and female servants began manhandling Alicent and took her nightgown off. As Alicent’s nakedness is exposed to the room, Alicent began fantasizing about running away with Rhaenyra. Alicent does not know how much longer she can handle the daily humiliation and disrespect she is subjected to.
After Alicent was ready, she went to meet with her father and her uncle. They both asked her to talk with her in private.
“Alicent, as you know, the king met with the High Septon yesterday. He asked to annul his marriage to you” Uncle Hobert said. Alicent began feeling faint. What would befall her if her marriage is annulled. Despite the humiliation and the spreading rumors, she is still the queen. Losing her title would destroy her.
“The High Septon refused to annul the marriage and is giving you six moons to get pregnant.” Her father interrupted, impatient as always. “We are searching for a man with Valyrian looks matching the king to sleep with and your cousin will also try to impregnate you.”
“What?” Alicent whispered.
“Alicent” her uncle took her hands in his. “You are a daughter of house Hightower and we will never force you to do something that will hurt you. You need to become pregnant soon and bear the king a child. It does not even matter if it’s a daughter or a son. Any child will do as long as it ties you to this marriage.”
“I do not know what to say.”
“You will say nothing, Alicent. You will do as you’re told.”
“Father, I cannot sleep with a man who is not my husband, let alone multiple men. This is against the teachings of the Seven.” Alicent was dazed.
“Do not be childish Alicent. It does not matter who fucks you as long as you’re pregnant.”
“Otto” Hobert warned before looking tenderly at Alicent. “We need to protect our house, Alicent. You have already heard the rumors. If this marriage is annulled, you might be forced to walk.”
“But, uncle Hobert, this is still infidelity. The Seven preach against a woman sleeping with a man who is not her husband. What if I am discovered? What will happen to me? Even if I wasn’t discovered, the child may look differently from my husband. What then?”
“I understand your worries, child. You are a dutiful daughter of house Hightower, and we look after our own. Should you be discovered, I will smuggle you outside of the Westeros. I have connections in the Free Cities when I was keeping an eye on Prince Daemon. They will house you until the end of your days of they need to.”
“But… weren’t all those connections whorehouses?”
“Of course not! Despite prince Daemon’s character, he did not spend all his days with whores.”
Alicent’s heartbeats began to slow down. “I will do as you wish uncle.”
“Good girl.”
Unidentified POV
Unknown to the Hightowers, someone was listening to their conversation.
With a smirk, that person is writing a letter with a detailed account of the conversation. Upon ending the letter, the letter was sealed and handed to one of the acolytes to be sent out.
The Hightowers will fall.
Notes:
Hi everyone!
Hope you enjoyed today's chapter.
This is the first time that I write Viserys' POV. The man is still delusional about everything and is only laying all the blame on Alicent for what happened in the blue wedding (pun intended). I tried to make it seem like maybe he learnt from his mistakes then show that he misunderstood everything. Vizzy is still gullible. I still don't know if I want him to stay gullible till the end or if I want to expose the Hightowers to his. Let me know what you guys think on that front!
Anyways, I want you guys to also guess who was the person who eavesdropped on the Hightower conversation. Let me know in the comments!
