The scent of blood in the air was so thick he could practically taste the coppery liquid.
“That’s the third one this week” stated the man.
Before him lay a gruesome scene, blood coated the walls, floor and dotted the ceiling. Various organs were scattered around the room with scraps of flesh and pieces of bone. All the hallmarks of a vampire attack.
“Dear God” whispered the man’s assistant, being unused to sights like these as it was their first day out of monster hunting training “What could have done this?” asked the assistant still in a whisper.
The man raised his eyebrow before asking “Are you serious?” with a hint of disappointment in his voice. “This is a vampire attack” the man stated as he walked into the room.
“But vampires are supposed to be intelligent and sophisticated.” interrupted the assistant.
“The ancient ones are” corrected the man “ but the new ones? They’re no better than a rabid Ghoul. They tear their prey to shreds and lick up the blood that pools.” he finishes with a serious expression.
“Why-why aren’t we taught that?!” shouted the assistant indignantly.
The man shrugged, “The chances of encountering a young vampire are low so a lot of teachers tend to neglect mentioning it but I expected you to know that given who you're related to.” said the man as though it weren’t a big deal.
The assistant’s shoulders slumped a little at the reminder of their heritage and their inability to live up to the expectations of others.
“Don’t worry kid” said the man with a sigh as he patted his assistant’s head. “You still have plenty of time to learn. I mean, even your grandfather didn’t start out as a master of his craft.” he continued with an encouraging tone.
“Thank you” said the assistant with a grateful tone.
“No problem” he responded before waiting a moment “Now, let’s go kill a vampire” he said with a grin walking out of the room following a trail of bloody footprints.
The assistant laughed at the mentor’s enthusiasm before jogging after them.
