Work Text:
The coarse ropes dig into Miley’s wrists, chafing against her skin with every desperate twist. Her ankles are just as bad, the rough fibers biting deep. The bola, a tightly wound knot of fabric, stuffs her mouth, making any sound impossible, a silent scream trapped in her throat. Dust motes dance in the narrow shafts of light piercing the blinds, illuminating the suffocating confines of her dressing room. It smells like old costumes and forgotten dreams, a cruel irony given her current nightmare. Luann’s taunting laugh still echoes in her ears, a chilling, triumphant sound that fuels the desperate thrashing.
Jackson! The word is a guttural sound, trapped behind the bola, a silent plea ripped from her soul. She strains, muscles burning, trying to work her hands free, just enough to loosen the gag. Tears sting her eyes, hot and frustrated, blurring the edges of the familiar room. This isn't just about a party or a ruined night; this is about everything. Luann, that conniving, manipulative freak. She's going to blow Miley’s secret, her entire world. The thought sends a fresh surge of adrenaline through her, a desperate energy. She kicks out, thumping against the wall, hoping to make some noise, anything to alert someone.
Suddenly, the door creaks open. Miley freezes, her heart hammering against her ribs. Jackson! He stands there, framed in the doorway, looking bewildered. His eyes, usually so full of brotherly mischief, widen in genuine shock as he takes in the scene.
"M-Miley? What the fuck?" he stammers, his voice a bewildered whisper.
Relief, so potent it makes her dizzy, washes over Miley. She thrashes harder, letting out a series of muffled grunts and whimpers. Jackson rushes in, his face etched with concern. He fumbles with the ropes, his fingers clumsy but earnest.
"Who did this? Luann? I knew she was shady, but this is… next level!" he mutters, tugging at a particularly stubborn knot.
The ropes are tight, bound with a cruel efficiency that speaks of Luann’s malice. Jackson grunts with effort, his brow furrowed in concentration. Finally, with a strained pull, a knot loosens, then another. Miley helps as much as she can, contorting her wrists, pulling against the loosening fibers. The gag comes next, a blessed release as it’s yanked free. She gasps, sucking in air, her throat raw.
"Luann," she rasps, her voice hoarse and broken. "She… she went to the party. As Hannah. She's going to tell everyone! My secret, Jackson, it's all going to be ruined!" Her words tumble out in a desperate torrent, fueled by panic and adrenaline. She rubs her raw wrists, the red marks already blossoming on her skin.
Jackson’s eyes widen further, understanding dawning on his face. "No way! That little… she’s got some nerve! We gotta go, like, now!" He helps her up, steadying her as her legs, cramped from being bound, wobble beneath her.
"My wig!" Miley cries, looking around frantically. "She must have taken it. And the outfit!" Her heart sinks. They're identical; she can't just show up as… Miley.
"Dude, no time!" Jackson grabs her arm, pulling her towards the door. "We'll figure it out. First, we stop Luann. Then, we get the wig back. And then, we figure out how to ground her for life, like, forever!"
They burst out of the house, the cool night air a welcome slap after the stuffy dressing room. The street is alive with the vibrant chaos of Halloween. Kids in their costumes, parents laughing, the distant thrum of music from Traci's party. Traffic would be a nightmare itself. Miley’s heart pounds, a frantic drumbeat in her ears. She can picture it, the moment Luann rips off the wig, the gasps, the whispers, her life as she knows it, irrevocably changed.
"Faster, Jackson, faster!" she urges, half-running, half-stumbling beside him.
Her regular clothes feel wrong, exposed, but there’s no time to change. The urgency of the situation eclipses all else. The party house is a beacon of sound and light. Music throbs through the air, bass vibrating in her chest. As they get closer, the crowd thickens, a kaleidoscope of costumes. Witches, vampires, superheroes – all oblivious to the impending disaster. Miley pushes through them, her eyes scanning, searching for any sign of Luann, of Lilly.
She spots Lilly near the stage, dressed as Lola, her signature beanie a bright splash of color in the flashing lights. Lilly is laughing, talking to someone, completely unaware. Miley's stomach churns. How could Lilly not tell? Luann’s act must be that good.
"Lilly!" Miley screams, her voice cracking over the music. Lilly turns, her smile faltering as she sees Miley, disheveled and frantic. Her eyes narrow.
"Luann? What are you doing here?" Lilly demands, her voice sharp with suspicion. "You better not have done anything to Miley, or you're gonna regret it!"
"It’s not Luann, Lilly! It's me, Miley! Luann tied me up; she's impersonating me!" Miley practically shouts in a loud whisper, her words tumbling out in a desperate rush. She grabs Lilly's arm, her fingers digging into the fabric of her sleeve.
Jackson bursts forward, panting. "She's telling the truth, Lilly! Luann had her bound and gagged in the closet! I had to cut her loose!" He points to Miley’s raw, red wrists.
Lilly’s eyes widen, a flicker of doubt, then disbelief, then a dawning horror. "What? No, that’s… that’s crazy, Miley! I’ve been with you-her-uh all night!"
She glances from Miley’s desperate face to Jackson’s earnest one, then back again. The pieces of the puzzle begin to click into place. The strange sweetness, the subtle shifts in demeanor.
"Think about it, Lilly! The way she was acting? Too sweet, too perfect! This is Luann, I swear! She's always been trouble, remember the well?" Miley pleads.
Just then, a hush falls over the crowd. The music fades, replaced by the feedback of a microphone. All eyes turn to the stage. And there she is. Luann, standing center stage, bathed in the spotlight, wearing the signature blonde wig, the sparkling Hannah costume. A sickening wave of dread washes over Miley. This is it. Luann grips the microphone, a smug, triumphant smirk playing on her lips.
"I want to show you the other side," she announces, her voice dripping with mock sincerity, a poor imitation of Hannah's usual bubbly tone. "The other side… the other side of…"
Miley's breath hitches. No. This is her worst nightmare. She sees Luann’s hand reach up, her fingers brushing the edge of the blonde wig. The crowd is rapt, murmuring, confused.
"…of Hannah Montana!" Luann declares, and her fingers begin to pull.
"NO!" Miley screams, a primal cry of despair and fury.
She lunges forward, pushing past shocked partygoers, her eyes locked on Luann. Suddenly, the lights plunge into darkness. A collective gasp rises from the crowd, followed by a ripple of nervous laughter and confused murmurs. The music cuts out completely. It's pitch black, disorienting, suffocating.
"What the hell?" Lilly’s voice is a startled whisper beside Miley.
"Oliver!" Miley realizes with a flicker of hope amidst the chaos.
He always comes through. He must have seen her, understood. In the sudden darkness, Miley doesn't hesitate. She blindly surges towards the stage, guided by the memory of Luann’s position, the desperate need to stop her. She hears a muffled yelp, a surprised grunt. She scrambles onto the stage, her hands outstretched, searching. Her fingers brush against fabric, then hair, a familiar texture. She grabs, pulls, and yanks. A body stumbles, falls.
Chaos erupts on the stage. There’s a flurry of movement, the sound of muffled exclamations, the distinct rustle of the sequined Hannah costume. Miley is pulling, wrestling with someone. She can't tell who it is, but she's fighting with every ounce of her strength. She feels another set of hands join the fray, Lilly’s, then Jackson’s. It’s a chaotic tangle of limbs and fabric in the darkness.
"Got her!" Jackson yells, his voice strained with effort.
"Pull her off!" Lilly adds, her voice a mix of urgency and confusion.
They drag a struggling, protesting figure off the stage, pulling them into the comparative safety of the dark, milling crowd. The lights flicker, then slowly begin to come back on, first dim, then brighter, revealing the disoriented faces of the partygoers. Miley gasps, her eyes wide as she looks at the figure they’ve just pulled from the stage. Two identical Mileys stand before them, disheveled but otherwise perfectly alike. One of them is glaring, her eyes narrowed with a familiar malice. The other looks utterly bewildered, still clutching the microphone.
"Which one is it?" Lilly whispers, her voice a mixture of awe and horror.
The two Mileys stare at them, their expressions unreadable in the sudden, blinding glare of the backstage lights.
