Work Text:
Angel does not know what to make of Dexter's disappearance. Or the fact that Deb and Harrison are also gone. One minute the department gets a break in solving Maria's murder. Less than twenty four hours later the Morgans have cleared out completely.
Quinn thinks Deb is dead. He thinks that Dexter has killed his sister and possibly his son and has gone on the run. Jamie disagrees. She's been concerned about Dexter and his sister for some time. She's noticed a hundred little things that are nothing on their own but that add up to a very bad situation. Angel has questioned her himself. What are the red flags they all missed?
One.
Dexter frequently disappeared without giving any reason. No one knew where he went or what he did or why it was at odd hours. Angel had assumed he was seeing a woman. A man can have casual hookups without having to explain to his babysitter.
Two.
The way he tracks Deb around whatever place they're at. He always knows exactly where she is. And for a kind of buttoned up guy he touches his sister a lot. But his wife has been murdered. Of course he needs comfort.
Three.
The bruises on Deb. The way she holds herself around him. As if she's in pain. Or tired. Or guilty. She's obviously losing sleep over something.
Four.
The sleep overs. Sometimes he crashes at Debs but mostly she's at his apartment when Jamie gets there in the mornings. And sure there's a pillow on the couch but it never looks slept on.
Five.
In the mornings. Deb looks like shit. Like shes been worked over by a bunch of guys and Dexter looks smug and sated. And he has a slink in his walk that reeks of sex.
Six.
Jamie's not sure about this one but a friend of hers swears she saw Dexter getting a hand job in a movie theatre from a skinny brunette who didn't seem into it.
Everyone knows Dexter usually goes for blondes. So who's a skinny brunette he'd be out with. And why go all the way across town if he's not hiding something.
And then they search his apartment. Amd find nothing suspicious. Until they black light his sheets and it lights up like it's a hookers motel. Even Masuka is impressed. Long dark strands of hair are recovered from the bed and Angel has to admit its starting to look like the Morgan siblings were way too close. Especially when they find Deb's empty birth control packet in the bedroom trashcan.
Quinn and Jamie think that Dexter forced Deb into whatever it is. That he manipulated and abused and coerced her until she didn't know up from down and right from wrong. Jamie thinks he's worn her down psychologically. Quinn thinks he held her down and raped her.
Angel doesn't know what to think. Dexter was his friend. Who he saw become a father, a husband and then a widower. Deb was also his friend, a clever, sensitive cop who wanted to make a difference and did. A confident woman who suffered at the hands of others but maybe she suffered most at the hands of her brother. Adopted brother. They grew up together so blood or not it's still incest in Angel's opinion. And he can see that Dexter was occasionally controlling. That he had a temper and was deceptively strong. That he could be dangerous if he wanted to.
Angel interviews two more people. A guy who went on a couple of dates with Deb and admits that he found Dexter strangely intense. The guy slept with Deb twice and both times she acted so guilty that he assumed he was her side piece. Then he met her brother and got weird vibes off them both. She got drunk and they disappeared for a while and when they came back in she was subdued and he was keyed up and Pete got put into a cab with Dexters own date.
Her story lines up. She's Dexter's type and it was Jamie who set them up. Louisa describes Dexter as charming but kind of distant until he insisted they double date. Once Deb joined them Dexter had ignored Louisa. Deb had been drinking and avoided looking at her brother who was laser focused on his sister as she knocked back shots. Louisa confirms they disappeared for a bit and when they came back the date had ended abruptly and he never called her back.
Angel tries his luck at the restaurant. A busboy remembers going outside for a smoke and seeing a couple fighting and then making up. When Angel shows him the photos he confirms that Dexter and Deb were in the alley together. Angel asks how they made up and the kid says
"Like a kiss. A quick one. But it was kinda off. Like he was more into it than she was. But she went back in with him and seemed kinda OK."
There's no cctv but it's starting to look like Quinn is right.
Angel keeps them on the list of people wanted for questioning. But he doesn't think he'll see them again. He thinks about Deb, trapped with a man who may be a monster. He adds her to his prayers.
