Work Text:

“Why are you doing this?” Masters spoke with anger laced in her tongue, “Why are you so obsessed with trying to make me fail?” She stared her dead in the eye, something that she had never done casually.

Amber stayed silent - clearly shocked at the sudden confrontation. The truth was, she didn’t know why. It sounded stupid when she collected her thoughts but it was undeniably true.

“I want this job,” the blonde began to speak, seemingly more nervous than the other girl had ever seen before, “And I am willing to do anything to get rid of whatever is in my way.”

Masters looked hurt, a redness beginning to develop in the edges of her eyes. Her lips quivered; desperately searching for something, anything to say.

“You don’t get to do this,” she began, “I want this job just as much as you.”

She took a slow step forward towards Amber, almost trapping her against the wall of the clinic room.

There was a brief moment of silence, the kind that seemed to linger awkwardly.

“I’ve never met anyone like you,” the blonde spoke up, her own eyes welling up with stinging tears. “You’re brilliant, you’re smart, you’re perfect.”

Masters froze slightly; noticeably taken aback at Amber’s sudden compliments.

“I want to be like that,” Amber continued, “I want to make good decisions, I want to have a great reputation,” she paused, “But I can’t.”

The dark haired girl stayed in her silence, listening intently to every word as if she was trying to figure out the meaning behind each syllable.

“People don’t like me.” Amber looked to the side, “They think I’m too ambitious or too competitive, they never look beneath that.” The strength in her voice began to fade, Masters placed a comforting hand on her arm in attempt to get her to continue. “If I don’t get this job, not only am I an unlikeable and manipulative bitch,” she paused, “I am also a failure.”

This was a kind of vulnerability that Masters had never expected to see from her. The entire time Amber had been fucking around with her, she had simply believed it was her shallow personality.

“I know it may seem like I’m the perfect person,” Masters spoke up, causing Amber to look back towards her, “But I’m not.” She took a breath, “People don’t like me either, they think I’m annoying, or I talk too much, or I’m too sensitive, and truthfully, they are probably right.” She laughed in an almost defeated way, “This job is so much more than a job to me. I’ve talked to more people in the past month than I have my whole life. It just feels… strange.”

Amber looked at her with a comforting smile, contrasting the dirty looks and glares she would usually have given.

“Our little stand off has been my favourite part of this experience.” Amber spoke, causing Masters to smile back at her through tears.

“I think in some strange way you were the first friend I’ve ever had.”

“You too.”

There was a lingering moment of intense quiet; everything else in the world seemed to go away. Masters’ eyes were fixated on Amber’s, examining every single detail laced in her face.

Amber leaned in.

Only slightly.

Masters took that as an invitation.

Slowly and steadily, the distance between them closed. Their lips moved gently in sync, as if they were scared to push any deeper and ruin the moment. Masters could taste the salty tears that ran down her face, only reiterating how badly they both needed this.

Amber was the first go further; bringing her hands around Masters’ waist and pulling her in closer. It wasn’t a heavy touch, it was the kind that would reassure her that she didn’t want to stop.

The moment seemed to go on for minutes, both their hearts were racing and desperately fighting for more, but they eventually pulled apart.

Amber placed her forehead on Masters’, staring deeply into her eyes and letting herself smile.

Neither of them said a word. But the gazes that lingered between their eyes spoke more than their mouths ever could.

Despite the moment being completely unexpected and impulsive, they needed each other more than they could ever know.
