Work Text:
Nick settled back into the driver's seat and shut the door with a bang. The juxtaposition of a sudden influx of cold and damp air followed by a lapful of warm and slightly soggy paper and then the crash of the car door made Charlie give a little jump.
“Not on my jeans!” he complained.
Nick grinned and reached over to the back seat of the tiny Micra that was his pride and joy and pulled a woven blanket that was usually the domain of Nellie from the backseat. He lifted up the paper wrappings, dumped the blanket onto Charlie and placed the cooling package back onto his boyfriend’s lap.
“Is sir happier now?” he said in a silly voice.
“I suppose dog hairs are marginally better,” Charlie replied with a put-upon air.
“One large portion of chips, plenty of salt ‘n’ vinegar and two chip forks.” Nick held out one of the forks to Charlie with a flourish.
He took it and then allowed Nick to unwrap the layers of paper that had kept the chips hot.
A blast of a warm and pleasantly greasy-smelling aroma tickled his nostrils.
The pair tapped their forks together and Nick immediately dived in, looking for the biggest, fluffiest chip he could find. Spearing it skillfully, he made quick work of shovelling it into his mouth.
“‘S good.” He mumbled around a mouthful of fried potato.
God help him, but even when he was eating like there was no tomorrow, Charlie was unable to resist loving his boyfriend. He stabbed at a chip and allowed himself to enjoy the salty, tangy seaside treat.
Maybe other people's idea of romance was fancy restaurants and candlelight, but here in the steamy environment of Nick's tiny car, looking out onto a dark and rainy coastline with his favourite person next to him (even if said favourite person was wiping his mouth with the back of his hand) there was a romance in the everyday. That this was their forever.
“Don't you have any tissues? Honestly, you're such a mess!”
Nick grinned at him, “That's just what you said earlier!” And elbowed Charlie.
Charlie rolled his eyes. Maybe he'd have to reconsider this forever thing.
