Work Text:
It was a rainy day outside. Me and my friends were waiting inside of our house while we waited for the rain to go away. While we waited for our lunch to be finished, we played board games together. Since our lunch was taking a little longer than usual, I decided to go to the kitchen and check on the cook. As I was about to walk into the kitchen, the door suddenly swang open, causing me to fall. The cook quickly placed the platter of food on the floor in order to help me get up. Once I got up, two of my friends started running down the stairs, right into my direction. One of my friends was holding a magic wand, and the other was chasing her. My friend, whom was holding the magic wand, pointed the wand at me and snickered, “Make Mikan shrink!” And I immediately shrinked, causing me to end up right on the platter of food, which was filled with bagels. My friends began searching for me, with no clue as to where I went. I yelled their names, one by one, hoping that they’d somehow notice me. The three of them who were currently there unfortunately did not hear me, though. I then sat down on the bagel, waiting for someone to notice me. Right at that moment, one of my other friends picked up the platter, “Oh boy! Bagels, my favorite!” He loudly said, picking up the exact bagel I was sitting on. I began panicking, not sure what to do. And just like that, I ended up inside of his body.
Later on in the day, I woke up right beside a huge structure. It seemed sort of similar to a wall, and it looked like it was protecting something, “Hello?” I yelled, hoping someone would hear me. Just then, I heard a voice nearby, “Hello. What are you doing here?” The voice said. In a panic, I began looking for where the voice came from, “I’m right in front of you.” The voice said, as it quietly giggled. I immediately stared in front of me, only to realize that I was speaking to the structure, “Gahhh, what?! How’s this possible?! Who are you?!” I yelped, falling on the ground. The voice once again giggled, “Don’t be scared. I’m just here to protect the oragenelles inside of this body, and to help with some transportation. My name is Cell Membrane!” I couldn’t believe what was happening, I was really talking to an organelle. “Well, are you possibly able to help me get out of here?” As soon as I said that, Cell Membrane stopped giggling, “Recently we have had some problems inside of this persons body, as it seems that he may have gotten a disease, so it would be great if you could help us with some small tasks. If you’re able to successfully help, I’m willing to let you outside of here.” I was not sure if it was better to accept or decline, as Cell Membrane could be lying to me, but at the same time I was desperate to get out, “I accept! Just tell me what to do first!” I yelled, without any second thoughts. The Cell Membrane then opened some of its pores, “First, I’m going to need you to try and get four of those eight water molecules inside of my pores. The process is known as passive transport, and I need you to do it in order for me to reach equilibrium.” I nodded my head, as the task seemed easy enough. I then began leading the molecules to the pores. Luckily, I didn’t have to use any of my energy, so I didn’t have to rest. For the next hour, I continued leading the molecules.
I sat down as soon as I was done helping Cell Membrane, as she was currently helping another organelle. As I was waiting, another voice called out to me, “Hey!!! Can you help me?” The voice sounded as if it was coming from the ground, so I immediately stared down. I noticed I was standing in a gooey substance, “Ah, you finally noticed me! My name is Cytoplasm!” The substance excitedly said. I couldn’t believe it, there was yet another talking organelle, “Hey so, I was wondering if you could help me? I just happened to notice how you helped Cell Membrane, and I’d really enjoy that help, too!” I quickly stepped out of the gooey substance, as Cytoplasm scared me, “Uh well, if you want me to help I can! It needs to be a quick task, though.” I hurriedly said, “That’s fine! I can help you travel around the organelles in order to make this faster. But you see, the problem is that all of the organelles around here are having issues. We believe it’s due to the owner of this body eating too many moldy bagels, which is causing him to get sick.” I was worried for my friend, and I needed to get out of here fast, so I once again accepted, “Alright! I’ll do it.” I enthusiastically replied.
First Cytoplasm took me to another organelle, which it called Endoplasmic Reticulum. When I got there, I noticed there were too structures. One of the structures looked soft, while the other looked rough. When I got there, it seemed as if the two of them were having an argument, “Well, I’m clearly better because I help all of the Ribosomes!” The rough one said. In return, the soft one said, “I might not help the Ribosomes, but at least I help with all of the proteins around here!” Cytoplasm then sighed with disappointment, “Guys, please don’t fight right now. First let our guest help with the recent problems.” Once Cytoplasm mentioned that there was a guest, the two of them immediately stopped fighting. They were most likely very embarrassed, as they just fought in front of a guest, “Hello!” I quickly said, in order to help with the awkward atmosphere, “I’m here to help with whatever you’d like.” The rough Endoplasmic Reticulum then said, “Actually, I need some help. Usually I transport materials to Golgi Body so that he can make proteins, since without proteins I can’t have Ribosomes. The issue is, recently I haven’t been able to transport things the same way I used to. I was wondering if you could help transport some materials to Golgi Body for me? I can transport you half of the way there, but you’ll have to walk the rest of the way.” I hesitated while answering, as I’ve already been here for awhile, “Yes, of course! I’ll get going right away.” I got the materials ready, and I held them tightly in my arms. Just then, Endoplasmic Reticulum began transporting me there.
After nearly an hour of being transported and walking, I had finally arrived at Golgi Body, “Hi, I have some materials for you!” I quietly said, leaving the materials next to the structure, “Ah, thank you! I’ve been waiting for these. Now I just need to transport them outside of the cell.” I watched Golgi Body transport the materials, and proteins came in return. Once the proteins arrived, they began trying to make Ribosomes inside of a nearby structure, but it didn’t look like things were going well, “Ah, that’s Nucleus. He’s been having trouble recently, just like all of the other organelles. Without him, Ribosomes can’t be produced. If you’d like you can help him, as I don’t need anymore help.” I was happy to hear that, as I was getting closer and closer to being finished. I nodded as thanks, and then I began walking to Nucleus.
“Hi! I heard you need help?” I happily said, “Yes, I do. Currently I need to control the cells activities using DNA, but I also need to help Nucleous with the creation of Ribosomes. I was wondering if you take over controlling the cells activities for me?” I quickly nodded my head, which the Nucleus understood. I then went to where the DNA was, and I worked with it in order to control the cells activities. For the next hour, all I did was help Nucleus and Nucleous. When I was finished, I went to check on Ribosomes. It looked like there were more than enough, and I was glad to help with such a huge task. Just then Nucleus said, “Mitochondria would like to speak with you. Endoplasmic Reticulum can take you there whenever you’re ready.” I was worried, as I haven’t met Mitochondria yet. But of course, this could also be my chance to leave the cell, “Thanks, I’m ready now.” And just like that, I was on my way.
When I got to Mitochondria, it seemed like there weren’t any issues. Everything seemed to be perfectly fine, and it looked like many materials and molecules were easily passing around. Just then, I heard a voice, “Hello. Thanks to you running around all day, energy was produced inside of the cell. Thanks to the energy, cellular respiration was able to occur inside of me.” When I looked around, I noticed that Mitochondria was talking to me, “Oh, you’re welcome!” I said in a panic, “Well, there are still two more organelles that need help inside of this cell. Lysosome and Vacuole both need help, and lucky for you, they’re right next to me. I suggest helping Lysosome first, and then Vacuole. Afterwards, you can try going back to Cell Membrane in order to get out of this cell.” I understood, but I couldn’t bring myself to speak due to being nervous, so I silently nodded. I then went on my way to Lysosome, “Hi, I heard you needed help?” I cheerfully said. Lysosome, who seemed sad, replied with, “Yes. I’d like help as soon as possible. Usually I help with digestion by using enzymes, but because of all of the moldy bagels that have been digested, I haven’t had many good enzymes around. I was wondering if you could ask Vacuole get rid of all of the moldy bagels?” I nodded, and I began walking over to Vacuole, “Hey! Lysosome was wondering if you could get rid of the moldy bagels? They’re currently causing issues within the cell.” I kindly asked, “Yes, of course. I’d appreciate if you could help me, as well?” Vacuole replied. I then nodded my head once again, and began helping Vacuole clean the waste. As soon as we were done, I went back to Lysosome. Once I got there I asked, “Is that alright?” To which Lysosome replied, “Yup! Thanks for the help.” Lysosome then began digesting the bagels, and it seemed like the organelles were all happy once again. I then asked both Endoplasmic Reticulum’s if they could take me back to Cell Membrane, which they accepted.
Once I arrived back at Cell Membrane I asked, “Is it fine if I leave now? I’ve finally finished every task that the other organelles have given me.” Cell Membrane then began giggling, “Well, you’ve actually done a lot of amazing stuff around here, so it would be a shame to let you leave now.” I wasn’t sure what was going on, as I had done exactly as I was asked to do, “What do you mean? I did all of my tasks. There’s nothing left for me to do.” And once again, Cell Membrane giggled, “Well if you leave, who’ll help us?” I then panicked, and began running. I ran towards Golgi Body’s direction, as they were the only other organelle that could help me. As soon as I got there, I quickly asked for help. Golgi Body accepted, and began transporting me outside of the cell. Then, everything went black.
Later in the day, I woke up on the couch. It looked like the rain had stopped, and an empty platter sat beside me. Three of my friends were fast asleep right next to me, and it looked like one of them was outside on the porch. I silently opened the door and sat down beside him, “Hey, you might wanna buy some new bagels. Our current ones are uh, a bit spoiled.” I told him, while staring at the sky. He then smiled at me and replied, “Well you're a nurse, so of course you’d know what’s right and wrong.” I smiled back, taking that as a compliment. The two of us then continued to chat for the rest of the night, and I told him about my adventure with his organelles. I even sketched out a picture of them, just so he could see what they looked like.
