Daylight is Mine (2017)

Summary:

June 18, 2017, Arcadia Oaks, California

Aja and Jim sacrifice themselves for the ones they love

Work Text:

The hum of the science fair is abruptly replaced by a guttural roar, shaking the gym bleachers. Panic erupts as a massive, craggy troll , unlike any they've encountered, bursts through the double doors, glowing with unstable chronal energy.

"By Deya's grace!" Toby stammers, his eyes wide as saucers.

This isn't just a stray Gumm-Gumm; this one’s packing some serious tech. Jim instinctively reaches for the Amulet, its light dimming, battling the temporal distortion. The giant beast, roaring a garbled, ancient troll tongue, smashes display boards, each hit rippling through time. A peculiar alien device , pulsating with iridescent light, is strapped to his back, projecting fragmented visions of Trollmarket's caverns and Akiridion-5's glittering spires onto the gym walls.

"He's exposing everything !" Aja whispers, her voice tight with alarm, Krel already scanning the tech with his wrist-mounted Holo-Yar.

The crowd shrinks back in terror; a blaring news crew, somehow already here, points cameras directly at the mayhem, capturing every impossible detail.

"We have to hit the Zeron Alpha on his pack," Krel shouts, grimacing. "But disabling it will sever the temporal tether. We'll forget this timeline. Forget each other ."

The words hang heavy. Claire's shadow staff phases, ready, but her gaze meets Aja's, a silent, agonizing understanding passing between them.

As Jim steels himself, "For the glory of Merlin, daylight is mine!" echoing, his Amulet of Daylight pulses, a deep, comforting blue.

He glances at Aja. She holds up her hand, revealing a small, intricate blue circuit board tucked into her palm, a piece of Akiridion technology repurposed, humming softly. Their eyes lock, a shared, poignant moment before the inevitable amnesia takes hold. This blue, this memory, this connection. It’s all they have left. The time-traveling troll roars again, oblivious to the heartbreaking sacrifice about to be made. The future, unwritten and unremembered, rushes towards them.
