Work Text:

Title: “The Conversation That Changed Everything"

Characters:

  • Jackson Whittemore — living in London, working in finance, still arrogant but more self-aware

  • Danny Mahealani — his best friend, openly gay, living in California, sarcastic and loyal

  • Ethan Steiner — gay werewolf twin, living in London, dated Danny briefly in the past

Scene opens on a dreary Sunday afternoon in London. Rain taps lightly against the glass of Jackson’s upscale apartment window. He’s sitting on his couch, legs stretched out, staring blankly at the ceiling. His phone buzzes next to him. He hesitates, then finally reaches for it.

[Text Message Thread: Jackson <-> Danny]

JACKSON [2:37 PM]:
You busy?

DANNY [2:38 PM]:
It’s 6:30 AM here. So yeah, obviously I’m up and partying 🙄

JACKSON [2:38 PM]:
I need to talk to you.

DANNY [2:39 PM]:
Did you finally cry at the end of a Pixar movie? Welcome to humanity.

JACKSON [2:40 PM]:
Not funny.

DANNY [2:40 PM]:
It’s a little funny.
What’s going on?

JACKSON [2:41 PM]:
I think I might be…

DANNY [2:41 PM]:
Pregnant?
Oh god, is this a werewolf kanima thing? Are you growing antlers or something now?

JACKSON [2:42 PM]:
No.
I think I might be…
Bi. Or gay. I don’t know. Something. Not straight.

[Danny pauses for a few moments before typing.]

DANNY [2:44 PM]:
Wow. Okay.
You wanna talk about it?

Cut to Jackson, who immediately tosses the phone on the couch like it’s caught fire. He runs his hand over his face, takes a deep breath, then picks the phone back up.

JACKSON [2:46 PM]:
I’ve been thinking about it for a while. Years, honestly.
Even back in high school I used to get… thoughts. Feelings.
But I buried it. Lydia was safe. Girls were expected.
And let’s be real, I was too obsessed with being perfect.

DANNY [2:46 PM]:
That tracks. You used to moisturize more than I did and I’m literally a skincare queen.

JACKSON [2:47 PM]:
Thanks for that.

DANNY [2:47 PM]:
Sorry. Go on.

JACKSON [2:48 PM]:
I didn’t want to be anything but straight. Not in Beacon Hills. Not as team captain.
Not when everyone was already whispering about you and me being “too close.”

DANNY [2:48 PM]:
Yeah. I remember.
You got quiet for like a month after someone spray-painted “fag” on my locker.
I figured you were trying to stay out of the fallout.

JACKSON [2:49 PM]:
I was terrified, Danny.
Terrified someone would say the same thing about me.
That maybe they were right.

Cut to Danny, sitting on his bed now, wide awake, fully alert. He types slower now, gentler.

DANNY [2:51 PM]:
Hey. Thank you for telling me this.
Seriously.
That’s not easy to admit, especially for someone who always had his armor up.

JACKSON [2:52 PM]:
Yeah, well, the armor’s cracked.

JACKSON [2:52 PM]:
And…
I think I like someone.

DANNY [2:53 PM]:
Is this where you tell me you’ve had a secret crush on me for ten years and we ride off into the sunset?

JACKSON [2:53 PM]:
LOL. No. Sorry to disappoint.
It’s Ethan.

Danny stops. His face changes slightly—not hurt, not angry, just… surprised.

DANNY [2:54 PM]:
Huh.
Well that’s a plot twist.
I didn’t even know you two talked that much.

JACKSON [2:54 PM]:
We didn’t. Not until recently.
He started at the London office three months ago.
We’ve been working on the same portfolio.
He’s smart. Confident. Doesn’t flinch when I act like a prick.
He actually calls me on my bullshit.

DANNY [2:55 PM]:
Sounds like him.
We dated for like, a minute.
He broke things off before either of us could really mess it up. Said we were “better off as cautionary tales.”

JACKSON [2:56 PM]:
Do you still have feelings for him?

DANNY [2:57 PM]:
Nah. We were never that into each other. Mutual attraction, no real fire.
He deserves someone real. Someone solid.
You thinking of telling him?

JACKSON [2:58 PM]:
I don’t know.
What if he laughs?
Or worse—what if he doesn’t and I screw it all up?

DANNY [2:58 PM]:
Jackson Whittemore, king of arrogance, afraid of rejection.
Now there’s the real shock.

JACKSON [2:59 PM]:
Bite me.

DANNY [3:00 PM]:
Kinky. But no.
Look—this is scary. I get it. But the fact that you’re even thinking about it? Telling me?
That’s huge. You don’t have to define it all right now.
You like Ethan. That’s real. Start with that.

JACKSON [3:01 PM]:
Yeah.

DANNY [3:01 PM]:
Also…
Just so you know, you don’t owe anyone a label.
Not now. Not ever.
If you’re bi, pan, gay, curious—whatever it is—it’s yours to define.
No pressure. No rush.

JACKSON [3:02 PM]:
Thanks.
You’re the first person I’ve told.

DANNY [3:02 PM]:
I’m honored.
Now, do me a favor?

JACKSON [3:02 PM]:
What?

DANNY [3:03 PM]:
Take him out for coffee.
See what happens.
Worst case? You get a nice drink.
Best case? You get the guy and the drink.

Scene shifts to a different moment, a few days later. Jackson stands outside a small café near the Thames. Ethan is already seated inside, sipping espresso, reading something on his tablet. Jackson takes a breath, checks his reflection in the glass, then walks in.

Ethan looks up and smiles. “Hey, Whittemore. You look nervous.”

Jackson shrugs, trying to play it cool. “That obvious?”

Ethan sets down his tablet. “Only because you’re clenching your jaw like you’re about to storm a battlefield.”

Jackson pulls out the chair. “Maybe I am.”

“Alright,” Ethan says, amused. “Lay it on me.”

“I think I might be… figuring some stuff out,” Jackson says, voice quiet but steady. “And I think I’d like to see if this… if we… might be something.”

Ethan studies him, then offers a slow, careful smile. “Well. About time.”

Back in California, Danny stares at his phone, grinning as a new message pops up.

JACKSON [5:12 PM]:
Coffee went well.
Dinner next.
I didn’t die.
Thanks for everything.

DANNY [5:13 PM]:
Told you.
Now go get your boy, Whittemore.
