Your new boyfriend is late for dinner. Again. You don’t mind though, he’ll bring you flowers or something to make up for it. He’s so cute like that. You’ve finished setting up the table, and you’ve been waiting for him for thirty minutes. No biggie. He’ll be here.
An hour later, you hear his key start to turn in the door. Your stomach fills with butterflies, and you idly wonder why you're so nervous to see your own boy. You smooth your shirt, hoping that’ll soothe your nerves, and you meet him at the door with a hug. “Hi baby!” He wraps one arm around you, cradling a beautiful bouquet of roses in the other. “Hey lollipop. Brought you roses.” You take the bouquet and give him a peck on the cheek. “Thanks baby.” He kisses your forehead and makes his way into the kitchen. “Sorry I was late. Traffic was nuts!” he says, pulling out a chair and digging into his now-cold plate. You smile nervously, although not even you know why. “No worries! I figured something must’ve held you up.” You sit down across from him, trying to keep calm.
The silence stretches, until you ask, “How was your day hun?” His fork pauses, just for a second. He grins at you, and answers, “You know, the usual. Normal.” You nod at him, trying to ignore the way his eye twitches when he says it. “Normal.” You repeat. You give him one last firm nod before dropping the subject. “Normal is good.” He hums in agreement, and the both of you settle into a tense silence that’s punctuated by the clinking of silverware against porcelain.
