Work Text:
The diner's bell gives a cheerful ding, a bright counterpoint to the thrum of worry in Arthur's chest. Sunlight streams through the window, glinting off the chrome and the syrup dispensers on the table. The aroma of coffee and cooked sugar hangs heavy in the air, usually a comforting scent, but today it just feels… different. David, his dad, is already halfway through ordering, his voice a steady, calm presence.
"And four orders of blueberry waffles, please," he says to the waitress, his smile easy.
D.W., perched on the red vinyl seat, swings her legs, her bright pink sneakers barely clearing the edge. She’s quiet, unusually so for her, a small frown knitting her brow. Katie, at four, is blissfully unaware, tracing patterns on the condensation of her water glass. She hums a tune, something about a lucky duck, her tiny fingers leaving trails on the cold glass.
Arthur fiddles with the napkin dispenser, lining up the squares with meticulous precision. The divorce is finalized. Those words echo in his mind, feeling both like a distant bell and a sudden, sharp clang. Two weeks with Mom and Grandpa, then two weeks with Grandma Thora, then two weeks with Dad and Nigel. That's been the rhythm, a slightly off-kilter dance he'd just started to get used to. Now it's full-time with Dad. And Nigel.
Nigel Ratburn. His vice principal.
The very thought sends a shiver down Arthur's spine. Mr. Ratburn is strict, organized, and always seems to know exactly what’s going on. He’s fair, sure, but strict. What would it be like, living under that gaze every day? Would he have to ace every pop quiz, even at home? Would there be surprise inspections of his room? The thought of his messy desk, perpetually littered with comic book scraps and action figures, makes his stomach clench. He glances at his dad, who’s now pouring syrup onto his own plate, oblivious to Arthur’s inner turmoil.
“Dad?” Arthur’s voice comes out small, a little reedy.
David looks up, his eyebrows raising slightly. “Hmm, Artie?”
Arthur hesitates, picking at a loose thread on the tablecloth. “It’s just… living with Mr. Ratburn. It’ll be… different, right?” He doesn’t want to say stricter, but the word hangs unspoken between them.
David’s smile softens. He reaches across the table and ruffles Arthur’s hair, a familiar gesture. “It will be different, buddy. New routine, new house. But it’ll be good different. Nigel’s great, you know that.”
D.W., her ears apparently perked for any conversation about "different," chimes in. "Is it gonna be like… like school all the time? With homework and… rules about everything?" Her eyes, usually so bold, are wide with genuine concern. "Can we… can we go to the library first? Before we go to the new house?”
David looks from D.W.’s earnest face to Arthur’s worried one, a flicker of understanding passing through his eyes. He sighs, a soft sound, and then gives a warm smile. "Of course, sweetie. That’s a great idea. Paige will be happy to see us." He gestures to the waitress as she approaches with their blueberry waffles, steam rising in delicious tendrils. "Thank you so much!"
The waffles are fluffy, dotted with bursting blueberries, and the syrup is sweet and warm. Arthur tries to enjoy it, but the unease churns in his stomach like a small, persistent wave. The library, though. That’s a good distraction. He loves the library. It's a place of quiet adventure, of new worlds waiting to be discovered between the pages.
The library is a familiar haven, filled with the scent of old paper and dust motes dancing in the sunbeams. Paige, the librarian, a woman with a kind smile and eyes that sparkle behind her glasses, greets them with a hug for David and warm hellos for the kids. She directs D.W. to the picture book section, where Bionic Bunny and Mary Moo Cow leap off the shelves, promising familiar comfort. Arthur gravitates towards the graphic novel aisle, drawn to the vibrant covers and the promise of epic tales. Katie, ever the explorer, finds a small table with a puzzle of Lucky Ducks and immediately dives in.
The quiet hum of the library, the rustle of turning pages, and the distant murmur of Paige’s gentle voice as she chats with David are a balm to Arthur’s frayed nerves. He pulls out a new volume of his favorite superhero series, The Adventures of Space Explorer Mark, and loses himself in the first few pages. For a little while, the worries about Nigel and the new house recede, replaced by the thrilling chase of alien villains.
Eventually, David gently coaxes them out of their literary explorations. "Alright, team," he says, a note of finality in his voice. "Time to head to our new home."
Arthur’s stomach does a flip-flop. Here it comes.
The drive to the house is surprisingly short. Arthur has been here before, for parties and occasional dinners, but never with the weight of permanence attached to it. The house is neat, with a well-tended garden and a welcoming porch. As David pulls into the driveway and they climb out of the car, Arthur sees him through the window.
Nigel Ratburn.
He’s on the couch, visible through the large living room window, his usually stern face softened by the glow of the television. He’s wearing a comfortable-looking sweater, not his usual impeccably pressed tweed jacket. And he’s watching… Spooky Poo. Arthur blinks. Spooky Poo? The silly, slightly spooky cartoon that D.W. sometimes watches? This is a side of Mr. Ratburn that Arthur has definitely never seen.
David opens the front door, and a wave of warmth, both literal and metaphorical, washes over them. The house smells faintly of something delicious, perhaps baking. Nigel looks up, his eyes widening in a rare, genuine smile as he sees them. He immediately pauses the TV, the eerie silence of a frozen Spooky Poo filling the room.
"You're here!" Nigel exclaims, rising from the couch.
He moves towards David, and Arthur watches, a little surprised, as his dad’s arms go around Nigel, and they kiss. A full, lingering kiss, right there in the entryway. It’s not shocking, not really. Arthur knows they’re together. But seeing it, so openly, so comfortably, in the context of their new home… It’s another layer of different.
"Welcome home, everyone," Nigel says, his voice warm, his gaze sweeping over each of them. He doesn’t seem strict at all. In fact, he looks… happy.
David, still holding Nigel close, beams. "Nigel, thank you. For everything." He looks at the kids. "Nigel and his sister, Patty, have been working hard on your rooms. They’re all ready for you to explore. Why don't you go on up and get acquainted?"
Arthur hesitates for a moment, then looks at D.W., whose eyes are already wide with curiosity. Katie, ever eager for new things, is already halfway to the stairs. The idea of his room, designed for him, sparks a tiny flicker of excitement amidst the lingering apprehension. He takes a deep breath and follows his sisters. The hallway upstairs is bright, with soft, cream-colored walls. Three doors stand along it, each seemingly waiting to reveal a new world. Katie, the smallest, practically vibrates with anticipation, making a beeline for the first door.
Her excitement bubbles over when she sees it: a soft pink door adorned with shimmering fairy stickers and a small, delicate sign in a whimsical script that reads, "Katie's Magical Realm." She giggles, already knowing this space is hers. The moment Katie pushes open her door, a gasp escapes her lips. It's as if a gentle magic has unfolded within. The walls are a soft, dreamy lavender that blends seamlessly into a delicate pink. The light, rather than harsh, is diffused by numerous strands of soft, warm fairy lights that crisscross the ceiling, casting a gentle, ethereal glow. The air seems to shimmer.
In the center of the room, a magnificent canopy bed dominates, its sheer, shimmering fabric draped like a princess’s dream. It’s adorned with plump pillows shaped like fantastical creatures – a shimmering dragon, a benevolent-looking unicorn, and a wise-eyed owl. The bedding itself is a soft, cloud-like pink, inviting immediate cuddles.
The floor is covered in easy-to-clean tiles, but strategically placed art mats create vibrant splashes of color, hinting at creative adventures to come. Near one wall, a dedicated arts and crafts zone beckons. A sturdy, child-sized art table, gleaming with a freshly polished surface, stands ready with an array of supplies. Tiny pots hold colorful markers, crayons, and paintbrushes, while neatly stacked trays overflow with construction paper, glitter, and craft foam. Next to it, a large craft cabinet with multiple drawers holds an organized treasure trove of ribbons, beads, googly eyes, and pipe cleaners – endless possibilities for tiny hands.
The walls are a tapestry of whimsy. Beautifully rendered fairies with gossamer wings flit across painted murals, their smiles gentle and inviting. Majestic dragons, not scary but rather guardian-like, curl around fantastical castles. And every surface, every nook, seems to house a new magical creature waiting to be discovered – tiny ceramic gnomes peeking from shelves, fluffy, soft monster plushies nestled in corners, and a miniature, shimmering fairy house perched on a low bookshelf. Against another wall, a dedicated study area is set up, centered around the very same art table. It's not a formal desk, but a space that encourages creative learning.
Beside it, shelves are filled with children’s books, their spines vibrant with illustrations of princesses and knights, talking animals, and enchanted forests. The furniture itself is multifunctional, designed to house toys and create dynamic play areas. A low, pastel-colored dresser doubles as a display shelf for a collection of glittery wands and tiny stuffed animals. Large, woven baskets, also in soft pastels, hold an abundance of building blocks and dress-up clothes. In a corner, two plush, cozy bean bags in shades of lavender and pink invite lazy afternoons of reading or imaginative play.
Looking up, Katie gazes at the ceiling, her eyes wide with wonder. It’s adorned with a constellation of glow-in-the-dark stars, creating a personal galaxy. Delicate fairy mobiles, with tiny, shimmering figures suspended by invisible threads, twirl gently in an imperceptible breeze, catching the soft light and casting dancing shadows.
"Wow," Katie whispers, her voice barely audible.
She reaches out a hand, as if to touch a painted fairy, a look of pure enchantment on her face. Her usual energetic bounce is replaced by a quiet awe. She takes a tentative step further into the room, then another, until she’s standing right in the center, slowly turning in a circle, taking it all in. A wide, toothy grin spreads across her face.
"It's so magical!" she finally exclaims, then giggles, a sound like tiny bells.
She immediately races to the art table, picking up a bright green crayon and a piece of paper, ready to create her own magic.
D.W. approaches the next door, her curiosity piqued. Her eyes light up as she takes in the vibrant display: a bold blue door emblazoned with a dynamic, comic-book style drawing of Miyu Moca Ushi-chan: Mahou Milkshakes! - the anime spinoff of her old favorite children's show, Mary Moo Cow. Below it, in energetic, blocky letters, is a sign declaring, "D.W.'s Super Squad HQ." She grins, a knowing spark in her eyes – this is definitely her territory.
D.W. pushes open the second door, her earlier apprehension quickly giving way to a gasp of delight. This room is a vibrant explosion of energy, a stark contrast to Katie's soft hues. The walls are painted in bold, unapologetic bright primary colors, a rich red on one wall, a deep blue on another, and a sunny yellow accent. The air crackles with an almost palpable sense of fun and activity.
Her eyes immediately dart upwards, towards the ceiling. It's a panorama of the sky, painted with swirling clouds and a brilliant blue expanse, occasionally dotted with hanging plants in small, colorful pots, giving the impression of a vibrant, floating garden. It’s dynamic, almost like looking up at the sky during a particularly exciting adventure. In the center of the room, a magnificent loft bed with a built-in desk commands attention. The bed itself, high above, is a cozy retreat, surrounded by bold, primary-colored bedding. Below it, the desk is a study in efficiency, a perfect perch for drawing or schoolwork, neatly tucked away yet easily accessible.
The floor is covered in soft, plush carpets, a deep blue that feels wonderfully inviting underfoot, perfect for sprawling out during play. The lighting is anything but subtle. Bright, bold neon lights in various shapes – a lightning bolt, a shooting star, a stylized "D.W." – cast a vibrant, energetic glow across the room, making it feel like a constant celebration.
This room is clearly designed for movement. An open play area for sports dominates one section, large enough for practicing her kicks or even a mini-basketball game. The walls serve as a canvas for creativity and action. They're decorated with an array of art prints depicting dynamic sports scenes – a soccer player mid-kick, a gymnast soaring through the air. A large chalkboard mural covers an entire section of wall, ready for her latest artistic masterpiece or an impromptu game of tic-tac-toe. And interspersed among these are vibrant images of her favorite superheroes and villains, locked in epic battles, their poses dynamic and inspiring. Bionic Bunny and Miyu Moca, of course, are featured prominently, mid-leap.
Organization is cleverly integrated into the theme. Sports equipment racks adorn one wall, holding her small soccer ball, a jump rope, and a lightweight badminton racket. Hooks are strategically placed for her capes and costumes. Large, brightly colored toy chests are tucked away, ready to swallow up a flurry of toys, while a series of display shelves showcase her collection of action figures and small trophies.
A cozy reading nook is carved out in one corner, surprisingly tranquil amidst the vibrancy. It’s nestled under a small, arched canopy of bright fabric, with a soft, circular rug and a pile of colorful cushions. This also serves as her study area, a peaceful retreat for focused tasks, despite the surrounding energy. Her personal touch is everywhere. On the shelves, nestled amongst her toys, are her nature collections and plants – a small terrarium with a tiny fern, a collection of interesting rocks, and a few carefully pressed leaves. In the play area, two unique seating options beckon: a nature-inspired rocker shaped like a stylized leaf, and a brightly colored hammock strung between two sturdy posts, perfect for swaying gently with a book or just daydreaming.
D.W. stands in the middle of her room, slowly twirling, her hands clasped. Her initial gasp gives way to a wide, incredulous grin.
"This is… this is amazing!" she shouts, her voice echoing slightly in the spacious room.
She rushes to the chalkboard, picks up a piece of chalk, and immediately begins to sketch a heroic Miyu Moca mid-flight. Bringing the sketchbook with her, she bounces to the hammock, testing its give, a mischievous glint in her eyes.
"I love this!" she declares, her voice brimming with unbridled joy.
Arthur, a touch of lingering nervousness mixed with growing anticipation, walks to the third door. A quiet sense of belonging washes over him as he sees it: a calm beige door framed by a subtle, painted vine, with a detailed, stylized drawing of a majestic eagle soaring over mountains. Centered on the door, in a strong, clear font, it reads, "Arthur's Expedition Base." He nods, a small, genuine smile forming on his face. This is his.
Arthur, after a hesitant moment, steps into his new room, and his jaw drops. The first thing that strikes him is the sheer sense of space. This room is a sanctuary, perfectly tailored to his interests, yet surprisingly serene. The walls are painted in soothing, neutral shades, primarily crisp white and a warm beige, creating a calm and expansive backdrop. The natural light, pouring in from a large window, is softened by soft, ambient light fixtures that cast a gentle, welcoming glow, complementing the natural warmth of the wooden floors.
The flooring itself is a beautiful, polished wooden floor, but it’s softened and themed with strategically placed nature-themed rugs – one shaped like a mossy rock, another like a winding river. It brings the outdoors in, a subtle but effective touch.
His gaze sweeps over the walls, and his eyes widen in delighted recognition. This is his world, brought to life. The walls are a vibrant gallery of his passions, adorned with dynamic superheroes, action figures, and carefully selected panels of comic book art. Dark Bunny, Supercat, Wonder Hamster – they leap and soar across the space, their heroic stances frozen in time. Superhero posters and comic strips even spill onto the ceiling, creating a captivating visual narrative above his head, making it feel like he’s living inside his favorite comic book.
In one corner, a dedicated gaming zone beckons. A large, high-definition monitor is set up on a sleek, minimalist desk, flanked by shelves displaying his gaming consoles and a neat stack of his favorite video games. The chair in front of it's no ordinary seat; it’s an action-themed gaming chair, ergonomically designed and emblazoned with subtle superhero logos, promising hours of comfortable immersion. The ample space around it suggests epic battles and strategic maneuvers.
His bed is a haven of comfort and theme. The bedding features intricate nature prints and colors – lush green leaves, deep blues like a forest lake, and earthy browns. It feels like sleeping in a peaceful glade, a stark contrast to the dynamic action on the walls. A true highlight is the nature documentary nook. It’s a cozy corner, almost a separate world, with a comfortable armchair and a large screen dedicated solely to showcasing the wonders of the natural world. Beside it, shelves are filled with his favorite nature documentaries, promising endless hours of exploration and learning.
Organization, a concept he often struggles with, is surprisingly appealing here. His room is neatly organized using a variety of nature-inspired baskets and containers – woven wicker, sturdy canvas bins in forest greens and earthy tones. They’re practical yet blend seamlessly with the aesthetic, making even tidying up seem less daunting.
His study area is clearly defined. A sleek, superhero-themed desk sits against a wall, large enough to spread out his textbooks and art supplies. Above it, a corkboard is ready for his schedules and creative ideas. Nearby, hobby-related materials for collecting action figures and toys are proudly displayed in custom-built shelving units, each figure meticulously arranged in dynamic poses. Glass display cases protect his most prized possessions, while open shelves invite closer inspection of his vast collection.
Beyond the gaming and collecting, there’s a quiet charm. Bookshelves line another wall, overflowing with books on every imaginable topic, from history to fantasy, alongside more of his beloved comic books. A plush, oversized armchair forms an inviting reading nook, nestled by a window, perfect for losing himself in a good story while bathed in natural light. Arthur stands still, taking it all in, a slow smile spreading across his face.
It’s perfect. More than perfect, it’s… him. Every detail, every choice, resonates deeply. He walks slowly around the room, running a hand over a comic book cover on the wall, tracing the outline of a printed leaf on his bedspread, his earlier worries melting away like morning mist. He sits down in the gaming chair, testing its plushness, then spins slowly, taking in the full panorama of his new sanctuary.
"Wow," he breathes, the word a soft exhalation of pure contentment.
He glances at a detailed action figure of Space Explorer Mark on a shelf, then up at the ceiling where another superhero soars. This isn’t strict. This is amazing. This is home.
Meanwhile, in the hallway, David wraps his arms around Nigel, pulling him into a tight hug. He buries his face in Nigel’s shoulder, a profound sense of relief and gratitude washing over him. The sounds of the kids exploring their new rooms — the delighted gasps and excited murmurs — are music to his ears.
"Thank you, Nigel," David murmurs, his voice thick with emotion. "For everything. For them. For us." He pulls back slightly, looking into Nigel’s eyes, his own shining with affection. "I know you and Patty put so much thought into this. The attention to detail… It’s incredible. You're incredible."
He leans in and kisses Nigel deeply, right there in the hallway, a moment of quiet, shared triumph. Nigel smiles into the kiss, his hand coming up to cup David's cheek, a silent acknowledgment of their new beginning. The happy sounds from the children's rooms continue, a vibrant soundtrack to their shared joy.
