Work Text:

“Can I ask you a question?” Finn said.

Poe's forehead wrinkled. “Yes?”

“Are you sure?”

“Is that the question?”

Finn rolled his eyes. “Your necklace,” he said.

Poe's hand came up to touch it. “What about it?”

“What is it?” It didn't look like anything special - not that it needed to, he guessed - just a piece of junk, but Poe never took it off, and more than once Finn had seen him rubbing it between his fingers when he was stressed.

Poe came over and sat down next to him. He pulled the chain over his head and handed it to Finn. Finn took it and rolled it in his palm. It could double as a ring, he thought, and slipped it onto his finger. In a weird way it felt right to be there, and for the briefest of seconds he allowed himself to imagine that's what it was.

Poe watched him. He cleared his throat. “It was my mom's,” he said. Finn stilled. Poe rarely talked about his mom. “She and my dad took it off some rebel tech. It was her wedding ring.”

Finn froze, staring down at the metal on his finger.

“She gave it to me before she died.” Poe continued. “I used to take both of them and wear them on either hand. I know it's not much but... I'm just waiting for the right person to give it to.”

“Anyone in mind?” Finn asked, trying not to sound as strangled as he felt at the idea. He needed to take the ring off, but he couldn't move his fingers. The idea of it on someone else wearing it made him equal parts sick and furious.

Poe's hand touched Finn's wrist. “Yeah,” he said softly, looking at Finn like he always did. “I do.”
