Work Text:
Rinne sat down at the airport cafeteria, drinking a random soda from the menu. It was getting pretty late, and his eyes were getting a bit droopy, but he had to stay awake.
He was waiting for Rei, who was coming back from overseas, wanting to get him home safely. The way to their place was a bit long, and he didn't want his lover to spend an absurd amount of money on paying for a taxi, or something.
Since Rinne had his own car, and a driver's license, he could easily pick him up. He didn't say anything about it, though. He's here to surprise Rei. Rinne hopes he could get to see Rei's shocked, tired face, maybe a lovely smile even?
He finished his soda, grinning with excitement. But honestly, he was getting bored and tired out here. Rinne paid for the drink, and left the cafeteria, heading towards where Rei is going to come out from. He sat down on a nearby chair, and yawned, feeling like he needs toothpicks in his eyes to keep himself awake right now.
But he couldn't fall asleep, he couldn't disappoint Rei, he wanted to see his silly smile. And who would drive them home, anyways?
… Well, Rinne couldn't remember much after that, anyways.
…
He felt a warm, familiar hand on his shoulder, which awakened him from his slumber. Rinne groaned, wiping his tired eyes, and stretched a little, not yet realizing where he was again.
“Nn, what's up–” He looked up, to see Rei’s worried expression. His black, wavy hair was quite disheveled, obscuring more of his face than usually. He was wearing cozy clothes rather than fashionable ones, and he seemed pretty tired.
Rinne looked around himself once more, realizing that they're still at the airport. “Oh– Rei-chan~!” He threw himself up, giving the younger man a tight, yet delicate hug.
“There, there, Amagi-kun… My fragile bones might fall apart if you keep squeezing me…” Rei spoke, although he did hug Rinne back.
They both missed each other's touch. Even if they tried not to think about how much Rei’s travels were separating them, it was a hard topic to avoid. An elephant in the room, if you must.
“Yer pretty late, ya know… Did the plane get delayed, or sumn?” Rinne yawned.
He smiled towards Rei, throwing a hand around his shoulder, carefully not to cause him pain.
“Mm, it did… I'm sorry that you had to wait, after even coming all the way here for me. You could've gone home if you were so tired, Amagi-kun.”
Rinne laughed, and even though the man was loud, Rei missed the sound of his voice. He still wasn't great with using his phone, so they only rarely managed to communicate.
“Me? I didn't wanna leave ya here, ya know… Let's get home now, aight?” Rinne grabbed Rei’s luggages, before the black haired man’s hand stopped him. “Nn? Is somethin’ wrong?”
“Is it a good idea? I don't think you should drive for over an hour while you're so tired.” Rei looked… concerned. And that's the last face Rinne wanted to see him make.
“I should be fine, ya know… Maybe we'll stop somewhere on the way back, if I get too tired, ‘kay?” Rinne patted Rei’s shoulder, before taking his hand in his, intertwining their fingers.
Rei nodded in defeat. It's not like they had a different choice, really. They could probably sleep at the airport, unless they got kicked out, but it wouldn't be comfortable for either of them.
Rinne’s car was quite luxurious, as he probably won it somewhere. It wasn't fancy, just more comfortable than a typical car. It was painted in black, with some stickers on the back, that Rinne told Rei to “not worry about”. Whatever that meant.
The seats were pretty comfortable, and Rinne always had a pillow or two on the backseat, and a big blanket, in case Rei wanted to comfortably nap. It happened pretty often, so he preferred to be prepared.
Rei sat down comfortably, leaning his head against the window, placing his hands in his lap, fiddling with a hair tie that he pulled out of his pocket. Rinne could feel the deep, red eyes on him, as he got behind the wheel, turning on some quiet radio.
“What’s up, Rei-chan? Ya can take a nap, ya know…” Rinne smiled.
He was rarely so soft towards anyone, but he couldn't possibly make someone like Rei uncomfortable with his loudness, after his long travels. He was a caring guy, even if not everyone believed in that.
“I’m making sure you don't fall asleep behind the wheel…” Rei yawned himself, which made Rinne follow as well. “Sorry, sorry.” The black haired man apologized, clearly not wanting the redhead to yawn more than he already did.
“Are ya hungry, Rei-chan?” Rinne suddenly asked.
“Mm, a little. Don't worry about me, though. Let's get back safely, first.”
Rinne did seem worried more about his boyfriend rather than himself, though. It was way past 11 PM, and even though Rei was the type to stay awake at night, and sleep during the day, his constant travels and different schedules were heavily throwing his organism and sleep schedule off.
He could see how exhausted Rei was, and even if he was hoping for a little bit of a smile, he didn't want to ask for much tonight.
Rinne started up the car, the calm, constant vibrations of it were pretty relaxing, and even lulling for Rei. There weren't too many cars on the roads around the airport at this hour, so they could move pretty smoothly towards their destination.
As they drove, around fifteen minutes in, Rinne felt himself dozing off. He wanted to slap himself in the face, and continue driving, but they were still more than fifty minutes away from their home. He didn't want to risk an accident, or someone lecturing him.
Rinne took a look over at Rei – he was dead asleep. He chuckled under his nose, of course he wouldn't stay awake. It wasn't a bad thing, though. He wanted him to get rest.
The redhead spotted a gas station further down the road. They were in a pretty secluded area, with the gas station being the only thing in sight. He drove towards it, stopping his car at the parking lot.
He contemplated whether he should wake up Rei or not, and he decided against it. Rinne got out of the car, and opened the rear door behind the driver's seat. He pulled out a blanket, and a pillow, before crawling on the seats, and throwing the blanket over Rei, putting the pillow between his head and the window.
He kissed his forehead, ruffling his head a little, before leaving the car, and heading towards the gas station.
He grabbed some snacks, like a wrap that they could heat up at the gas station, something healthy to drink, tomato juice for Rei, and a sandwich for him as well.
He paid with whatever leftover money he had in his pocket, since he wasn't planning on spending anything on this trip, heated up his wrap (and Rei’s sandwich, in case he wakes up), and headed back towards the car.
It was pretty chilly outside, and combined with Rinne’s tiredness, it was really uncomfortable and even more exhausting, making him cold and slightly ill.
He noticed Rei’s tired eyes looking through the window straight at him - maybe it was a good idea to heat up the sandwich.
“Mornin’, sleepyhead.” Rinne opened the door to the car, hopping behind the driver's seat. He closed the door, to avoid getting the chilly air inside. “Ya hungry?” He handed over the sandwich, which Rei accepted.
“Should we sleep in the car…?” Rei questioned, his voice raspy and clearly exhausted. Rinne was pretty shocked at his question, but it wasn't irrational.
“Maybe… But I don't think I wanna sleep at the gas station, ya know…” Rinne rolled his eyes, taking a bite of his snack. He looked outside, and spotted a parking lot, a bit further away from the gas station.
“Mm, let's drive there.”
Rinne started up the car again, keeping the wrap in his mouth, since both of his hands were now occupied. He started driving, still not letting go of the snack, with Rei giving him a side eye. The black haired man took the wrap from his mouth, and gave it a bite too.
“... Mm, pretty good, for gas station food.” Rei complimented, holding both a wrap and his sandwich in his hands now.
“Kyahaha, it is, isn't it?” Rinne tried to keep his laugh quiet, failing slightly. The food gave him a bit of a boost of energy. “Ya just kinda got an indirect kiss from me, ya know~” Well, Rei did take a bite of his food, after all.
Rei just smiled to himself, not commenting anything.
“This is a good spot, prolly…” Rinne parked his car at an almost-empty parking lot. There were a few street lamps lit up, but they weren't giving off a lot of light. Nearby, there was some sort of a field. Pretty romantic, if it wasn't almost midnight, and they weren't both deadly exhausted.
“Mm… We should get on the backseat…” Rei added, giving Rinne back his food.
“Hm? Maybe, yea.” Rinne got out, walking to Rei's side, giving him a hand, to help him get out. “Come on, princess~”
“Kukuku, don't drop your food, Amagi-kun~”
“Stop mentioning the wrap…” Rinne rolled his eyes.
They sat down on the backseat, snuggled up next to each other. It wasn't comfortable much, and it definitely wasn't what Rinne expected tonight, but it's better than nothing.
Rei leaned his head against Rinne's shoulder, both of them enjoying their food and drinks. Rinne left the heating on, with the radio quietly playing Rei’s favorite radio channel as well.
“‘m sorry that I didn't get ya home tonight.” Rinne apologized, looking away from Rei. He could easily acknowledge he fucked up a little (or more), but… at least they were together, right?
“Don't apologize. It's alright.” Rei quietly replied, seemingly dozing off. “Do you want a bite…?” He looked over at his sandwich, hoping Rinne's eyes follow his lead.
“What, are we exchangin’ indirect kisses now…” Rinne grinned.
“Mm, well–” Rei’s quiet mumbling got interrupted, as Rinne’s mouth intertwined with his. Their kiss was tender, yet short. Delicate, and not too greedy. It was like a welcome home after a long day.
“We don't need no indirect kisses, ya know…” Rinne added, to which Rei simply sighed with content.
Ah, there it was. The smile that Rinne has been waiting for the whole day. He couldn't help but smile back, happiness overtaking him.
His hand landed on Rei's cheek, carressing it softly, soothing him to sleep. Rinne's hands were slightly cold, due to the temperature outside, but Rei didn't seem like he cared at all.
The black haired man fell asleep first, and Rinne threw a blanket over the both of them. Their food was still unfinished, and Rinne just noticed he got some wrap sauce on his jacket, he might've squished it too much.
Well, the stain would become a memory for him, probably. He put down his and Rei's food, and fell asleep next to his beloved.
