Chapter Text
Title: "The Blade and the Blessing"
Scene Type: Short story or dialogue-heavy vignette
Characters: Nyx and Vax'ildan
Prompt:
Nyx is injured — again. And Vax has had enough. He finds her alone and confronts her, not out of anger, but out of concern. She brushes him off. Healing is her job, not his. But he knows what it’s like to feel like your body’s just a tool for the gods — and he refuses to let her fall into the same spiral he did.
Does she lash out? Open up? Or finally let someone see the cracks?
Optional Challenge:
Try writing the scene with no internal monologue — only dialogue and action.
Minimum: 200 words
As the rest of the party sat around the fire, reassuring each other or making food, Vax stared after Nyx as she limped into the surrounding woodland. He paused, sighing, and followed. As silent as he tried to make his steps, he watched her shoulders tense up, her hand tightening on her rapier.
"Go back, Vax." She said sharply, without even turning around.
" There's no reward for letting yourself suffer in pain." He said, stepping closer." Thats like not pissing on yourself when you're on fire."
" Yeah? Well you're certainly not someone I'd do it for, golden boy." She snarled, her hand to the wound. "Go back. I'm sure there's plenty there that need you." still Vax didn't move, just stared at her.
"... I know how it feels, Nyx. To have your will bound to her. To feel like your body isn't your own. That its a weapon."
" And what are you here to tell me, huh? That its a fucking gift? That I should thank her?"
Nyx's voice exploded and she spun around, holding her rapier to his throat, snarling. Before Vax could retaliate though, Nyx recoiled, dropping the blade to the ground with a clatter. Vax watched her panting and he moved forward, grabbing her hand firmly, letting healing magic pulse through him, even as she pulled away.
" Get the fuck off!" Nyx screamed." You used to get it! Used to wear your scars and cuts like badges of honour! I want the fucking pain, alright! Because it reminds me I'm alive! Not with one foot in the fucking ground like she wants me to feel!" She stared at him, panting. Yanking her arm back.
"... Don't you have somewhere to be, Champion?" She asked bitterly before pushing herself to stand, marching back to the camp. Vax sighed and looked up at the sky, to the one raven staring down from the tree.
" My lady, you have a fight on your hands."
