Work Text:
Rayne had insisted we go for a walk, and I was in no place to deny her request. After all, the air was crisp, and the flowers that we encountered in our path were blooming beautifully.
Of course, none of them could compare to the natural beauty of my beloved sunflower.
We walked for quite a while before something cold and wet splashed against my face as Rayne dragged me down towards the beach, where we had found ourselves on our sporadic trip.
We had only stepped onto the shore when I felt it and stopped Rayne from going any further.
"We should head home." I held out my other hand as another droplet fell into my palm. I could tell she wasn't very happy at going home just yet, but she led the both of us away from the sand and sea despite her apprehension.
I could only smile as the rain seemed to come down heavier by the second. "Tomorrow, I promise." That seemed to ease her displeasure even though we were getting drenched to the bone.
If I knew that the weather would be so bad, I'd have brought an umbrella along... Then again, I'm sure Rayne would still end up dripping from how she'd want to run home instead of standing under the umbrella with her girlfriend...
Well, it's not like I'd stop her from having her fun under the lack of sun.
Rayne suddenly turned to me and took my hand in hers, twirling me around with the familiar sound of her laughter.
"Come on, Marine! We're in the town square, all alone and in the rain." She giggled happily. I could never get enough of her smile, and I hate to deny her such a simple pleasure.
Her open hand found a place on my shoulder, and mine fell to her waist as she hummed a song that I couldn't remember the name of.
A twirl here, a spin there... I had never had so much fun before. Perhaps it was because I was with her that I found myself at ease.
It's not how I'd normally dance with Rayne but she's the one who started it so I naturally fell into step.
"Marine, run away with me." Rayne smiled sincerely. I looked at her as though what she said was completely insane. She laughed at my befuddled expression which caused me to frown.
"What brought this up all of a sudden?" I questioned and she giggled. "I wasn't being serious. I just wanted to see how you'd respond."
Of course she was joking... "You always make such unsavory jokes like that." I sighed as she came to a sudden stop. The rain had come to a stop...
"Look at the sky, Marine. The sun peaking through the clouds... It's so beautiful." Rayne gasped, pointing towards the beach we had left what felt like moments ago.
It truly was a sight to behold...
"Certainly not more beautiful than you." I sighed as I turned back towards her, only to find her playing with a opened velvet box in her hands.
Inside the box was a silver ring, decorated with sapphire. It was a beautiful ring, no doubt about that.
My breath had left my lungs as Rayne's expression was almost conflicted. Worried.
"Marine, will you marry me?" She asked softly despite the doubt on her face. I couldn't speak for a long while, almost choking on my decision.
"Yes... Yes, of course." I felt tears fill my eyes. Perhaps it was the remnants of the downpour but it stung my eyes as I hugged her.
As she slipped the ring onto my finger... I couldn't help but cry into her rain-coated clothes as she smiled. A rainbow truly does come after the rain. And the one in my arms is truly the most beautiful one I've seen.
And in the next moment, my feet had started to move as Rayne, now my fiancée, started to hum along to our synced steps.
"Dancing again?" I sighed, softly smiling as she twirled around the fountain. She seemed so happy... I didn't want to dampen her infectious joy.
She just nodded as I fixed the posture to properly dance with her... "Of course. I want to because I love you, Marine."
