Work Header

well nothing, then, much has changed

Summary:

She has spent months of confused pining, and months of painful in-denial — of finally, finally, having the courage to ask Emily out on a proper first date.

She wasn’t going to accept defeat. Not to this sneaky, golden retriever bundle of a man. That she used to date, even!

Ugh, you know what they say. Exes always come crawling back.

Work Text:

It wasn’t that she was incapable of accepting, or if there was an uncontrollable void preventing her from doing so; She just refuses to accept it. No way in hell. Not even if Emily gets Becca’s cashmere cardigan ruined with her taste for greasy breakfast diner or if she misplaced her textbooks over her girlfriend’s pile of her own papers.

She has spent months of confused pining, and months of painful in-denial—of finally, finally, having the courage to ask Emily out on a proper first date.

She wasn’t going to accept defeat. Not to this sneaky, golden retriever bundle of a man. That she used to date, even!

Ugh, you know what they say. Exes always come crawling back.

Chris isn’t here for Becca, though. He barely spared a glance towards her direction when he was so fixated on Emily, her girlfriend. Her girlfriend.

“Our practice was moved to Friday, Em. Do you mind if we hang out on Saturday instead?”

Do you mind if we hang out on Sat—bleh! Becca internally mocks, though a grimace paints her features at the idea of this excited little boy fawning all over Emily.

“She’s busy on Saturday, Christopher. We have plans.” Becca exclaims, hand snaking around Emily’s waist to pull her closer to herself, farther to Chris’ reach. She was fortunate enough that they are both comfortable with public displays of affection. To an extent. She just hoped that Chris would drill it into his head that the latter is no longer available for his sexcapades.

That’s right, loverboy. You’ve had your chance. Not. Anymore.

“We have plans, Becca?” Emily asks, eyes round with innocence. Becca almost let out a scoff. She tried not to roll her eyes. God, you’re such an idiot, Emily.

“Yes, we do.” She presses, with an underlying tone that seemed like a threat. To Emily, at least. Which is why she clears her throat and sends a pleading look to Chris.

“Yeah, um, sorry. Becca and I have this.. thing.. going on. On Saturday. Totally can’t see you on weekends.” If Emily isn’t oblivious, she would have absolutely noticed the pride on Becca’s shoulders. The smile of triumph—no, wait, is she smirking?

“Oh, okay, then.” Chris slumps but otherwise shimmies away from the couple with no victory. Becca, on the other hand, is in paradise. If she was in a better mood, she would have been dancing to the music, but all she wanted to do now is to spend some time alone with Emily.

“Stop that.”

Becca looks at her girlfriend. “Stop what, exactly? Party groove? Should I be sobbing my heart out?”

“No, no.” Emily shakes her head, dropping her empty red cup on the nearby table to wrap her hands around Becca as they slowly move along to the music. She could see the slight dark bags resting under the blonde’s eyes, though almost covered with concealer, and with the lack of lighting.

They hadn’t been in touch at the girlfriend duties they’ve been deprived of ever since the semester began weeks prior. With the ongoing stacks of admission, to seek credit opportunities, there was barely any girlfriend-on-girlfriend time squeezed through the agenda.

Today, however, at this party; a charity event Kaitlyn’s band proudly hosts to help with a fundraiser or something we’re-broke-college-students-that-should-help-each-other something, Becca had forgotten. But it was Kaitlyn, and she happens to be her friend, and her girlfriend’s best friend, and—well, it’s a bad impression not to attend and support her, right?

Becca strides with her natural poise, filtered mind, polished makeup and gorgeous, gorgeous hair. She was striking with confidence; one earned and one deserving. Partly with the idea of how people gawk at her, though mostly her gawking at her girlfriend. Have you ever seen Emily not rock a cocktail dress?

Her girlfriend that currently supports her weight by the waist, a playful smile upon her plump (God, I want to kiss her right now. Help me.) lips. To Becca, there was nothing else she could settle for but this moment.

“Whatever you were trying to do to Chris.”

They share a snicker, unbeknownst to surrounding cheers for some other eye-catching moment. Does it honestly matter? “Did I scare him away? I hope I did.”

“Hopefully not. I still like him, you know.” Emily earns a little glare. She quickly adds; “As a friend, I mean.”

“Mm.” Becca hums, otherwise acknowledging how her girlfriend looked like a kicked puppy. She swats her hand like a dismissal. “Enough about him. I missed you."

“We see each other every day.”

“We see each other.” She exaggerates. “Honestly, it was more like a fleeting moment. One minute I see you grabbing your cup of coffee, and then the next you’re dashing outside the door. No good morning kisses, nor goodbye ones. Heartbreaking.”

Emily firmly nods, as if to agree. “And you haven’t been inviting me to your room as of late.”

“It’s a VIP section. You’ll have to be a close friend of the owner.”

“Oh, I’m very close with her.” Emily whispers, suggestive.

“Well, then you are in luck.” The crowd cheers. Becca didn’t care. She is, however, resolved that she had already made an appearance for today and it was time to head back.

Christopher had buzzed off, Kaitlyn is having a wonderful blast, she had no idea where Abby and Tyler are, though probably having as much fun as the others. Zack was glorifying his wine racks to what’s-their-face, and she hasn’t seen Zig and James today.

Hm. Maybe she’ll check up on them tomorrow.

Becca gently pulls Emily by the wrist towards the entrance of their home. “As a VIP, I’ll give you an early preview of the afterparty.”
