Work Text:

The Earthworm luxuriated in the rich, dark soil. Anchoring itself it pushed forward, grabbed hold and relaxed. Expand, Contract, Expand, Contract, Expand, Contract. The rhythm was soothing. The soil was good.

The maggot feasted. With its brethren this rotten carcass, its entire world, was a garden of Eden where it wanted for nothing. It ate and ate. Though it knew its change would come, for now it revelled.

The butterfly flew, flinging itself through the blue sky with gay abandon. Below it a banquet of flowers stretched beneath it. A flash of red caught its eye and it dived. Following the sweet scent that wafted from it. Alighting on the solitary flower it extended its proboscis and drank greedily of the sweetness.

In a shady crack of the towering oak tree the moth flexed its wings. Dusk was fast approaching. It had slept well and yearned to fly but for now it rested in safety. There were always nooks and bolt holes for those who knew how to find them.

The ant followed the scent trail laid by its fellow workers. It would gather the food there and return to the nest. Ahead, as behind, it knew its fellows were streaming in a long sinuous line towards their object. The colony would grow.

The aphid basked in the plant suffused with light from the setting sun. The green expanses which sustained her colony. The plant was nearing its capacity for her kind. She and the others enjoyed its bounty, but caution was required. The next generation would have more fliers. They could set out to establish fresh colonies on other suitable plants. Satisfied with her decision she turned once more to the sun.

The cricket chirped. As he rubbed his front legs together again and again, he hoped his call would reach a listening female. A warm summer evening was best spent with company.

Eyes closed, lying on a picnic blanket, the girl with curly brown hair savoured the life around her. A hand found hers and soft lips met her cheek. Life was good.

Notes:

And nothing bad happened ever again.
