Work Text:
There is always a certain day in an individual's life where they can look back upon and remember then, that was the day the course of their life changed forever. Medkit remembers clearly one of those days. It was when he was still a little fawn in the unfortunate circumstance of being spawned into Blackrock. Most of the inphernals in the faction of Blackrock do not have spawnlings of their own as it is mandated by the higher ups that all spawn be monitored, cared for, and trained within designated governed facilities.
The few Blackrockians that kept their spawnlings were usually part of the upper echelons of the faction, therefore keeping their buissness’s going through generations and securing those in power stay in power. Medkit was spawned in around a similar time to a good handful of others, and then that group was taken to the nursery of block fourteen. In Blackrock there a total of thirty facilities built for housing, storing, and managing all of Blackrocks forces. Blocks eleven through nineteen are dedicated for housing the spawn, medical research, and storing those that are disabled.
It was at block fourteen where Medkit was raised, tested, and evaluated eventually for his future employment. He had been around five years old that day, and as usual keeping to himself in the corner reading a picture book. Medkit had never played much with the other spawnlings, it wasn’t that he didn’t want playmates rather he was a bit too shy to approach. The other children seemed to hold the same sentiment mostly, they were probably intimidated by the young fawn that spoke so clearly and could already do multiplication problems despite being as young as them.
Medkit had resigned himself always to the corners of the rather dull playroom the block provided. The other children played among each other with the dulled wooden block, or worn stuffed animals. Most children of this group could not read, but for practice they were still provided busted up picture books. Medkit sat with his back pressed against the concrete wall and his black button snout pressed into reading one of his favorite books, The Velveteen Rabbit.
However his contented reading session was interrupted by the little clacking of a carapace tail wagging behind an intruding presence. It was another child who Medkit knew as particularly the loudest of his peers. He had two sets of pink horns on either side of his hair poking through his messy white hair, they stuck out awkwardly like most children’s horns only barely starting to grow. The scorpion spawnling gazed back at the fawn with a toothy grin, his fangs already sharp.
“Hii, wats are you reading?”
Medkit had been caught off guard but still leveled the tinier spawn with an unimpressed look.
“A book.”
“Muahaha! No noo, the name!”
Medkit flicked his ear slightly in annoyance, before tapping the cover. Still that did not answer the little nuisance and he simply tilted his head, still smiling and waiting for an answer.
“You can’t read, can you?”
“No!”
Medkit begrudgingly read the title to the scorpling.
“Oh ok! What that say?”
The pink horned pest slid right against Medkit and pointed towards the words of the page, and the fawn inphernal huffed out before resigning himself to his fate. It was only later when playtime came to an end and they were all being ushered back to their bunk rooms did the scorpling latch onto the other and tug.
“Wats your name?”
The deer just blinked and tried to remove the tiny hand gripping his own sleeved.
“Medkit.”
“Well I’m Subspace T. Mine, the future hero of Blackrock!” The arachnid proclaimed before putting his hands on his sides.
“Subspace Trip Mine, lower your voice now.”
One of their caretakers chided the pink spawnling. Who just shied away behind Medkit in line. The fawn felt some pity for the annoying thing so he just tugged the other along by his uniform sleeve. Subspace had perked up after that, and when they arrived back to the bunk rooms he didn’t leave Medkit alone either.
Medkit still remembers that night when Subspace had come crying to him after one of their caretakers beat him for talking after lights out. The deer comforted him that time as well, and in return on those cold lonely nights the two would be there for one another. When it was dark and among the fellow unloved children it was only natural the two of them latched on to each other. Over the years that stayed the same mostly.
No matter where Medkit afterwards, there would be Subspace not too far behind. Holding on to eachother. On that day his life changed forever.
