Work Text:
Seven year old Lance Decker Rock was five months overdue for a back-to-school physical exam. It was January and he was in second grade which means he should have gotten his back-to-school checkup in September but he didn’t know that. Parents and school officials keep track of that.
It was 2:00 in the afternoon when Tina brought Lance into the waiting room. She paid the receptionist and sat beside Lance.
“Mom there’s a bank across the street. What if it gets robbed?”
Tina told Lance she was in no mood for silliness and pointed out there were sick children in the waiting room.
Right after Tina silenced her seven-year-old two old ladies entered the waiting room and sat down.
One of them began speaking.
“I’ll tell you Metilda my husband always did an excellent job poisoning people. There were times when the stupid people he poisoned would clutch their stomachs and act like they were going to puke. In fact some of them puked all over the place.”
The other little old lady laughed and said “Angela you sure know how to brighten an old gal’s day. I love to hear about people being poisoned.”
Parents were in shock the way two old ladies talked about poisoning people so casually in the waiting room of a pediatrician’s office.
It wasn’t long after they laughed about poisoning people two men in white entered and one of them shouted “alright it’s time to go back to the institution!”
The old ladies were kicking and struggling as the men in white dragged them out of the room.
Lance asked “mom did we just see that happen?”
Tina just shushed Lance while every other child and parent was in shock.
The nurse called “Robbie Templeton.”
20 minutes later the nurse called “Lance Rock.”
Lance took off his shoes, socks, and shirt and the nurse took note of his height and weight.
After that she told him to hop on the table. She took his temperature and attached a finger clamp.
“Okay Lance your temperature is normal now let’s take your blood pressure.”
She wrapped a cuff around his arm and waited for a reading on the machine.
Lance was told he had normal blood pressure, and the doctor would be in soon.
After the nurse left Tina and Lance waited quietly.
When Doctor Farris entered she said “hello” and Lance said “hello” back. The doctor washed her hands and then she asked how everyone was doing.
Lance answered “I’m fine as long as the old lady’s husband doesn’t poison me.”
Tina exhales with a smirk on her face and the doctor confirms she heard there was chaos in the waiting room.
Then the examination began. Doctor Farris looked in Lance’s eyes, ears, and told him to say “ahhh.”
She checked his reflexes which made Lance giggle.
After that she put the stethoscope on his back and had him breathe twice.
“Okay Lance let me hear your heart.”
She put the stethoscope over his chest. Lance didn’t mind the cold stethoscope and it seemed like the heart exam was over before it started.
After that she informed Lance the nurse would be back to give him a shot.
Lance groaned but his mother Tina told him he had to have it.
Lance was very brave when he got his shot. It only stung him a little bit.
After that he was free to leave with his mother Tina. As they exited back into the waiting room they saw a mother and her son come in yelling “there was a bank robbery across the street” in unison.
Lance yelled “oh no mom give me your phone so I can call 911!”
Lance grabbed his mother’s purse and quickly found her phone and Tina yelled “Lance” which he responded “I heard the emergency alarm across the street so let me dial 911!”
Tina yelled “I hope the bank robbers don’t come in here!”
Lance hit the keypad and dialed 911.
That evening Kevin got home and asked Tina and Lance how things went at the doctor’s office.
Lance answered “dad you better let mom tell you everything because you wouldn’t believe a word of it coming out of a kid’s mouth.”
The look on Kevin’s face was priceless after hearing his seven year old son’s reply.
The End
