Lopsided Chimney (1993)

Summary:

Halloween 1993, 4630 Edmonds Dr, Ladner, Vancouver

Oscar allies with Lynn and Kelly on their mission

Work Text:

The scent of damp earth and sweet pumpkin is overwhelming as Kelly and Lynn scramble onto the flatbed of the truck. They duck low, pulling a coarse canvas tarp over themselves, the rough fabric scratching their cheeks. The vibration of the engine is a constant tremor beneath them, a low hum that vibrates through their very bones.

Lynn's heart pounds a frantic rhythm against her ribs, mirroring Kelly's; it’s a shared beat in their linked hands, an unspoken echo of their shared purpose. "This is, like, a super secret mission!" Kelly whispers, a mischievous glint in her eyes that Lynn understands completely.

The truck lurches, then slows, the roar of the engine fading to a guttural rumble. Cold air rushes in as the tarp shifts. They peer out, seeing a dense, shadowy woodland stretching before them, the bare trees like skeletal guardians against the bruised twilight sky.

The driver pulls away, leaving them in a profound, unsettling quiet, the only sound the rustle of leaves under their sneakers.

Lynn squeezes Kelly's hand tighter. "Feels like we just found a hidden level, huh?"

Kelly nods, her gaze piercing the gloom. They push through a thicket of thorny bushes, the branches snagging at their costumes, until a small, crooked house emerges from the deepening shadows. It looks like something plucked from a forgotten fairy tale, smoke curling lazily from its charming, if slightly lopsided, chimney.

A man, no taller than Lynn herself, opens the door. His eyes, kind but weary, blink in surprise. This must be Oscar. He invites them in, a quiet hope in his voice when they explain they might have a way to grant wishes.

"I just... I wish I was taller," he confesses, a small, sad smile on his face. "So I could reach things better."

They spill the entire narrative—the tale of the moonstone, the mirror, Aunt Sophia's dwindling time. Kelly gestures wildly with the wand, emphasizing the gravity of their mission. Oscar listens intently, his brow furrowed, then a flicker of resolve hardens his gaze.

"Whoa, that's a big boss battle," he states, his voice gaining an unexpected strength. "A mean witch, a magic rock, and saving your aunt? I'm in! And maybe, just maybe, this magic stick can help me get that really good cereal off the top shelf."
