Work Text:
The warm Mexican night wraps around Shane and Lizzie as they slip out of the Top Model mansion. The air, thick with the scent of jasmine and the distant murmur of the ocean, feels like a conspirator. Seventeen years old and sneaking out like common teenagers, yet this is anything but common. Lizzie, ever the pragmatist, glances over her shoulder, her dark eyes scanning the opulent façade of their temporary home. Her long, straight hair, usually so prim, is pulled into a casual ponytail, a few strands escaping around her face. She’s wearing faded denim shorts and a simple tank top, a stark contrast to the flowy skirts and earthy tones Shane favors.
“You sure this is a good idea, Shane?” Lizzie whispers, her voice low and laced with a familiar caution.
Shane, already halfway to the designated meeting spot by the beach, merely grins, her bare feet sinking into the soft grass. “Relax, Liz. It’s fine. We’re just hanging out.”
Her wavy, sun-streaked hair catches the faint moonlight, framing a face that’s usually serene, but tonight holds a spark of mischievous excitement. Her tie-dye t-shirt, a gift from her mom, is vibrant even in the dim light. They reach the edge of the beach, the rhythmic crash of waves a steady soundtrack. Marcus, tall and lanky, stands near a cluster of palm trees, a nervous energy radiating from him. Adam, always more at ease, is already there, leaning against a tree, his easy smile a beacon in the darkness. He’s wearing board shorts and a simple white tee, his sandy hair falling over his eyes.
Shane’s eyes lock with Adam’s, and a flutter erupts in her stomach. It’s an unfamiliar sensation, thrilling and a little terrifying. He pushes off the tree and walks toward her, his gaze unwavering. “Hey, Shane.” His voice is a low rumble, and she feels a blush creep up her neck.
Lizzie, meanwhile, gravitates towards Marcus. “Hey,” she says, a slight awkwardness in her tone. She usually excels in structured environments, but clandestine meetings on a beach? This is new territory.
“Hey, Lizzie,” Marcus replies, his usually professional demeanor softened by the night. He shoves his hands into his pockets. “So, movies, right? I was thinking about Scorsese today, you know, Goodfellas? Total classic.”
Lizzie’s eyes light up. “Oh, for sure. But, honestly, I’m more of a period piece kind of person. Have you ever seen Shakespeare in Love?”
Marcus’s face breaks into a wide smile. “Are you serious? That’s my all-time favorite! The dialogue, the costumes… It’s just perfect.”
As Lizzie and Marcus get lost in their cinematic discussion, Shane and Adam stroll along the water’s edge, the cool foam tickling their toes. The moon casts a silvery path across the ocean, mirroring the shimmering surface of Shane’s feelings.
“This is nice,” Adam says, his voice quiet, almost intimate. He turns to her, and the intensity of his gaze makes her heart pound a little faster. “You know, Shane, I think you’re pretty amazing. Pretty and amazing.”
A genuine, uninhibited laugh bubbles up from Shane. She can feel the warmth of his words spreading through her. “You’re pretty amazing yourself, Adam,” she replies, her voice softer than she intended.
Suddenly, a frantic rustling sound comes from the nearby bushes. A beam of light cuts through the darkness, sweeping across the sand. Max, the show’s producer, is barreling down the beach, a handheld camera clutched in his hand, his eyes wide with a desperate, predatory gleam.
“Shane! Adam!” Max’s voice is a raspy shout, amplified by the open air. “I knew it! Breaking the rules!”
Panic flares in Shane’s chest. Her eyes meet Adam’s, and they share an unspoken agreement. Run.
“Marcus! Lizzie! Max!” Shane yells, turning and sprinting back towards the mansion.
Lizzie and Marcus, startled by Max’s outburst, immediately understand. “Oh, man,” Marcus mutters, grabbing Lizzie’s hand. “He’s going to disqualify you!”
All four of them sprint across the manicured lawn, the thud of their bare feet against the grass punctuated by Max’s increasingly agitated shouts. The pool, shimmering blue under the subtle garden lights, becomes their only sanctuary. Without hesitation, Adam dives in, followed closely by Shane, their bodies cutting through the cool water. Marcus and Lizzie splash in right after them, submerging themselves just as Max flips over in a mud ditch, panting, his camera still rolling. The teens bob to the surface, their hair plastered to their faces, trying to suppress their laughter.
Max yells from the ditch, his face a contorted mask of frustration. “You four! You’re in deep trouble!”
Adam swims closer to Shane, his arm brushing hers beneath the water. The cool embrace of the water, the thrill of the chase, the shared defiance – it all coalesces into a moment of undeniable connection. He reaches out and cups her cheek, his thumb gently stroking her skin. Shane’s eyes meet his, and in the soft glow of the pool lights, she sees a reflection of her own longing. Leaning in, Adam’s lips meet hers. It’s a smooth, tender kiss, a promise whispered in the silence of the night, a silent rebellion against the rules and the prying eyes of the show.
But the moment, sweet and illicit, is shattered by a blinding flash of light. On the other side of the pool, hidden behind a large potted palm, Kelly crouches with an enormous, professional-looking camera held up to her eye.
