Work Text:

Stars fading but I linger on, dear,’

A voice sang in the distance. The gentlest of breezes slipped past the apartment’s white curtains, making the small wind chimes hanging by the window clink quietly. However, they were enough to make Dick stir in his sleep, his skin slowly growing aware of the soft weight of the blanket covering the lower half of his body, the warmth of the pillow pressed against his arms as he rested his head on top, hair all messy.

He reached for the other side, wanting to bask into Kory’s natural warmth before he had to leave the bed to prepare breakfast and get the day going. It’s not like he had a busy day ahead, but he did want to get a few things done, and sadly in order to do that he needed to leave the bed. Which made it all the less motivating to even try it.

However, when he reached for the other half of the bed, he was met with cool emptiness. He tapped around blindly, already groaning in protest at the pretext of opening his eyes. But when he eventually gave in and prompted his head up, he found the bed empty, Kory’s side still messy and her cologne still lingering around; she must’ve woken up not too long ago.

Dick sighed, stretching under the sheets as a soft groan left his lips. The good thing about training regularly was that it took an extra effort to make him sore the next morning, but it did keep him feeling tired even as he just woke up. He let his eyes slowly close, letting that familiar comfort of sleep hold him for a couple seconds, but then a new breeze whistled through the wind chimes, making him open his eyes and breathe in deeply. He should probably wake up, but…

‘Still craving your kiss,’ that siren sang, pulling him out of his sleep again. Recognizing that beautiful, although not necessarily trained voice, an invisible cord pulled at the corners of his lips. ‘I’m longing to linger till dawn, dear…

Eventually, Dick managed to convince his body to urge some energy to his limbs, prompting himself up and off the bed. He looked around for a couple minutes for yesterday’s t-shirt, which he was sure he had discarded on the floor right by his side of the bed, but now was nowhere to be found. Giving up on it, he simply fished a new one from the closet and made his way out and towards the living room. If Kory had woken up early, might as well surprise her with a nice breakfast.

As Dick entered the kitchen, he felt a summer warmth extinguish the morning breeze that had clung to his chest when his eyes took in the sigh: Kory’s wild mane of untamed curls, like flames that licked her golden skin, lighting her up. Her hips swayed from side to side as she hummed, chirping to the song playing in the radio, a crispy, metallic voice accompanying her. Something was sizzling from the pan Kory was tending to, and the mouth watering smell of freshly fried bacon flooded the kitchen.

He approached her from behind, his grin growing wider as she sang to herself, unaware of his presence.

“Sweet dreams that leave all worries behind you,” she sang, her mane of copper and fire swaying between her shoulder blades as she danced on the spot, nodding to herself in sync with the music. She turned to place another piece of freshly fried bacon on a small pile that had started to form on a plate. On the table nearby he saw she had already prepared two mugs for the coffee still buzzing along as it brewed in the coffee machine. She had cut some fruits into dices and added what looked like a bit of juice, making a refreshing and sweet fruit salad served in flower patterned bowls.

The more Dick took in, the warmer his chest felt, drawn towards her like a moth to this vibrant, seducing flame he was lucky enough to wake up to every morning. She seemed pulled out of his finest fantasies, and even those didn’t manage to make her justice.

“But in your dreams, whatever they be…” She chirped.

“...Dream a little dream of me.” He followed.

Dick slid his arms around her hips, stepping closer to her until her cologne clouded the smell of their breakfast. He heard her yelp with a quiet sound that stole a new grin from him as he rested his head on her shoulder, brushing her hair away. He saw a glimpse of  her emerald eyes turn to look at him as she relaxed in his arms.

“I didn’t hear you approach.” She giggled, her hands covering his own over her lower belly.

Dick made a noise trapped between a purr and a tired hum. “Saw you singing along, didn’t want to interrupt.” He grinned, corners of his lips perking further as she shushed him, flustered. “Good morning, love.” He finally said, moving up to press a trail of kisses to her jawline.

As Kory put the fire off and moved the pan away, she turned around, leaning against the counter as she smiled down at Dick. She leaned in, pressing a slow, proper kiss to his lips; he melted into that touch, giving in to her alluring warmth and swaying gentleness. It stole his breath away to know a woman this breathtakingly beautiful wanted to stick with him; it wasn’t as if he thought lowly of himself, he guessed he could be seen as attractive, sure, and he had never gotten bad luck with the ladies, but…

…But Koriand’r was every vibrant color, every temperature and weather all at once. She was a typhoon and wildfires, she was floods and droughts. It was hard to even try to explain just how much she meant to him and how he adored her.

He felt her lips curve into a knowing grin before she leaned back, her eyes curious, wandering about his face. “Good morning,” she chirped, wrinkling her nose at him. “I didn’t want to wake you up, you seemed pretty tired, thought some rest would do you good.”

Dick reached to brush away a curl that had fallen in front of her eyes, and relished in the way her golden skin shifted to a warmer sunset at his touch.

“You’re the best.” He said, “but I owe you breakfast now, so no more sneaking around, tomorrow it’s on me.” His eyes shifted to her clothing, (or, rather, lack of), noticing she was wearing the infamous t-shirt he had been looking for earlier. “Cute shirt.” He teased.

Kory looked down and pulled at the hem, stretching it as she looked down at the plain gray color. It didn’t do her any favors, such an ashy shade in comparison to her vibrant colors, but it did hug her curves around the hips in a way that made it hard for him to focus. He wanted to reach out and hold her hand, kiss her jaw, hide in the crook of her neck and breathe her in until all that existed was her, his Kory, his soulmate. But he knew if he did, he’d be unable to focus at all for the rest of the morning.

So instead he reached for the plate with the stack of bacon and presented it to her. “Let’s get these going before they go cold.” He grinned. “And maybe if I’m lucky, you’ll let me help you choose something that does you better justice than my shirt.”
