Work Text:
Leon Scott Kennedy was born in the middle of summer 1977. He enjoyed a typical small town, American childhood: raised on 80s action heroes, cop dramas, and cable TV. Like any boy, he wanted to grow up like those cool guys. Shoot the bad guy with a gun, quip a witty one-liner, and get the bodacious blonde or brunette on the beach. By the time he was in high school in the 90s, he even copied the haircut of a teen heartthrob, hoping it might help him along in his journey. Things just didn't seem to work out the way he wanted and Leon never finished college. Instead, he joined the police force. It was the summer he turned 21 and he was about to begin his first day at work in Raccoon City.
The girl who would be known as Ada Wong was born in China to unknown parents in an unknown city circa 1974. Life was not so simple in communist China. Political turmoil marred the decade of her youth, filling her formative lives with lies, violence, and confusion. Long before the tanks mobilized against the people, she knew she had to get out of there. In the early 90s, Ada was brought under the tutelage of spies without a purpose after the end of the Cold War. They taught her how to speak, how to dress, how to fight so she would never need to rely on anyway but herself. Ada Wong was a capitalist. A mercenary. A loner.
September 1998: Raccoon City has been torn apart by a viral epidemic where the humans infected are turned into monsters. Leon S. Kennedy has been tasked with survival. Ada Wong has been tasked with retrieval.
In the garage beneath the Police Department, she saved him. "Stay sharp," she told him before saving his life for the first time that night. He
To her, Leon was cute. Young. Innocent. As if he had never seen someone die before his eyes before. Never seen a city ripped to shreds. Never had to abandon all he thought was true. This blue eyed, baby faced puppy dog. She hated cops, but boy did she love a man in uniform. He was good with a gun, but nonstop with incessant questions. Maybe he'd grow up to be someone.
To him, Ada was sexy. Older. Confident. Like she knew everything about the crumbling world around them and wouldn't let it faze her. She was like something out of a movie. Mysterious Chinese spy come to seduce him. Even in the quiet moments away from the terror, he can still remember how fast his heart was beating. He remembers how she smelled, as if she never broke a sweat. He remembers how she tasted.
Ada swears she only kissed him to stop his babbling. She put her hand on his inner knee to let him know she was interested. She told him "I want to see you again" to try and tell him that she was falling hard and wanted to know if it was just the adrenaline of the apocalypse making her heart beat fast. Pointing a gun at him in order to get the virus sample was just a negotiation tactic. He obviously was head over heels for her. In the end, she slid him a rocket launcher because a boy without protection would have been a terrible thing to waste.
October 2004: Autumn in Spain was cool. Leon in that jacket was cooler. Ada watched him from afar at first, surveying the scene of her mission as he ran in gun first to save the American President's daughter.
The boy she ran into six years ago was gone. This was a man. Square jaw. Big arms. Too strong to be caught up in the 27 club. The way he looked at things, there wasn't any more confusion in his mind. Either something was an asset to help him or an obstacle to be overcome. Oh how those blue eyes could stare right through you and not blink once.
Leon didn't know what to make of Ada. She was a spy, a seductress, and the sexiest woman he'd ever met. A form fitting, red turtleneck sweater. Black leather, knee high boots. Lip gloss in the moonlight. 15 year old Leon would have loved his look. 21 year old Leon too. For that matter, 71 year old Leon would love her too. The two of them, growing old, raising kids, playing bingo. It could never work. The soldier and the spy. Unless . . .
He asked her if she had changed. If she was still the type to stab him in the back for money and blow him a kiss. If she wouldn't just grappling hook her way out of a situation and would stay by his side to work out their problems together.
"Don't think too hard handsome," she told him. Because that's what she liked about him. Despite the trauma and the disasters he'd faced, Leon was still such a himbo. They hadn't seen each other in six years, yet six minutes of conversation made her heart flutter like a schoolgirl.
July 2013: China was burning. Ada was 39. Leon was 36. He held her in his arms as a monster threatened to kill them both. She made a bad joke. Then he did too. Some things never change. Like the way he loved her and she loved him.
December 2025: Six years later. Nine years later. Twelve years later. Leon held Ada close and she kissed him.
