Work Text:

Raine hadn’t meant to fall asleep. That was emphasized by the new crick in their neck from sleeping weirdly sitting against a wall in the secret room of shortcuts. But as they opened their eyes they saw her, asleep right next to them, her head lightly resting on their shoulder. A blush immediately rose to Raine’s cheeks.

There they were, asleep with Eda after she somehow convinced them to skip class with her. Eda had a way of compelling Raine to do things they otherwise wouldn’t do.

Raine tried not to breathe too hard, or move, not wanting to wake Eda, or well, more importantly not to end this moment. Raine’s eyes gazed over her face, noticing all the small details they had learned to love. The small freckles that started to pop up when Eda spent time in the sun. The slightly messy, bright orange hair. Her soft, but slightly chapped lips, how very Eda.

It’s moments like this that made Raine’s mind (and the happy butterflies in their stomach) go a million miles an hour. This was definitely ok. Raine was just fine, they tried to convince themself, to no avail.

Good. All good, great. Neat. Cool. Fine. Oh my Titan she’s SO ADORABLE AND PRETTY, ABSKJSIBIABAKHG. Raine thought as they began to spiral. Raine’s face burned almost redder than their bard uniform. Raine’s heart started doing weird things every second they looked at Eda.

Raine was pretty sure their feelings had moved past just best friend love, a while ago. Eda meant the world to them. Best friend, someone to talk to and trust, but she was also the kind of beautiful that made them forget their words. The only storm Raine didn’t want to outrun.

But the thing was, Raine wasn’t sure Eda felt all of those things. She loved them, definitely, as a best friend, in some ways, just like Raine loved her. But they didn’t know if Eda felt that same pull to them as they did to her. If every brush of their hands together left her floored like it left Raine. So Raine stayed quiet, both in expressing those feelings to Eda and there in the secret room of shortcuts.

They thought that maybe if they just closed their eyes again, the gay thoughts would calm down to a manageable level. They did not. But Raine sighed, relaxing their muscles just a bit.

Just then Eda rolled over, putting one of her arms on Raine. All of the sudden Raine was hyper aware of everything, Eda’s soft breathing, and the warmth of her hand on their chest. The simple motion of her arm was more than enough to make them forget how to be a person. Their face was on fire again as they debated whether to stay perfectly still like a statue or just physically combust and melt into the floor, which seemed like the more likely scenario.

Eda’s eyes started to open, “Ughm, you’re warm.” Eda said groggily with a kind smile. Raine went into system overdrive. “I-uh.. hi?” They managed to get out. They would be replaying and overthinking that moment in their head for hours on end that night.

“Hi.” Eda replied a blush creeping onto her face as she realised how close they were to each other. They both instinctively scooted away from each other, both a mess.

Eda’s eyes were locked on the bard, a small smirk appearing on her face. “You’re really cute when you’re all flustered.” Eda whispered under her breath, once she realized what she had just said her eyes went wide, embarrassed, quietly hoping they hadn’t heard. But Raine heard, and they were dead now.

“Wha…I…uh.” Raine malfunctioned. “You’re cute too!” They shouted back before they could help it. Both of their faces were burning as they both screamed internally.

Raine noticed Eda’s hand was just a few inches from their own. Something came over them, more powerful than their mind trying to talk them out of it. Raine moved their hand right next to her’s, and looped their pinky around her’s.

A moment of shocked silence filled the space between them. Neither of them moved for a few heartbeats, eyes fixed on eachother, as they took in the raw rarity of the moment. Sparks flying, unspoken, but insanely real.

Eda was the first to remember how to be a human. Eda smirked, her face still blushing. “Hmm, forward much?” She said with a teasing glint in her eyes. A small smirk and giggle lit up Raine’s face. “Eeeddaaa! I’m trying really hard not to pass out right now, just so you know.” They said with a huge smile.

All the way to the tip of Eda’s ears went red. “Well you’re not the only one.” Eda’s words melted their heart. Somehow they weren’t freaking out, probably just glowing. And to that, they didn’t know what to say.

Luckily they didn’t have to because the bells began to ring signaling the end of the day.

“Well I guess we should probably go before ol’Bumpy finds us.” Eda said as she stood up, her pinky still tethered to the Bard who was staring at her in awe. “Come on Rainstorm. I don’t want you to get in trouble.” She said with a kind smirk, one that was saved special just for them.

“Ok Calamity.” Raine bashfully replied as Eda helped them up. Then as they started to leave the room, Eda casually slipped the rest of her fingers in between Raine’s, making them both blush.

“Wow, I mean I know I’m good looking,” She gave Raine a fun finger gun with her free hand, “But I didn’t know I was that powerful.” Eda says jokingly. “Oh, you have no idea.” Raine jokingly replied with a sweet grin and gently squeezed Eda’s hand as they walked together.
